Muddy Water - Tips To Catch Bass In Spring
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 окт 2024
- The lake came up 5 feet overnight! The water turned to chocolate milk and completely changed the pattern. Come along as Matt figures out how to catch bass in these crazy conditions! Every Spring we get hit with cold, muddy water, learning how to fish through it will make you a more consistent angler.
The first step in catching bass in muddy water is knowing what "normal" is on your lake. Its easy to go overboard with the bright, obnoxious colors on a lot of lakes. On the flip side, if your lake went from crystal clear to really dirty, its hard to find baits that are obnoxious enough! Once you've established a base line for your lake, you can easily choose the right colors and begin catching fish.
Below you'll find links to the exact baits Matt had tied on today, as well as some of his favorite colors depending on water clarity. We've also included his exact Chatterbait combo and a couple budget options for the other baits. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

This is awesome and probably the most comprehensive spring fishing info I've seen. Alot of people show the baits but it's rare to hear the actual habits and activities of early spring bass with demonstration of course. We won a little Wednesday night fruit jar tournament last night most of the damage was a bandit square bill in fire craw without rattles. these things work muddy water clear water doesn't matter too much. We used Alabama craw which is a little greener and fire craw. Wasn't a huge sack but we probably caught 30 to 40 fish in 3 hours. Thanks TB glad to be a part of this family. 🎣
In the early spring, and on heavily pressured waters, I really like squarebills with no rattles. I find that the super tight wobble works great along the edges of grass and hydrilla; even more so in stained water.
Thank you for the tip. I live in the city and almost all I have time to fish is those small pressured ponds. Gonna try a few shad raps and a frittside next time I go.
Where we live, early spring is nothing but rain and storms- one right after the next. The water stays super muddy, you need something they can find. If the water isn't muddy, I agree- pressured or not I like a silent crankbait, I think it's far more natural. I know some guys think that shad make clicking sounds as they swim- idk about that but, I do know they sound nothing like a rattling crankbait- or we would hear them coming. Still, in muddy water- you have to have something to get their attention when they're too far away to see the bait- and a rattle works. What would be awesome is if it would rattle enough to get them to come over- and then stop.
You channel is great! The more knowledge I can get the better!
Quality fish on the Jackhammer Matt. I've turned into a chatterbaits freak, specially with a spunk Shad trailer. Thanks so much for turning me onto it.
My favorite part of this video was how Matt needed his hand to talk but was still able to continue working his jackhammer with his left hand alone. Lol never ceases to amaze me.
Matt, love your message on getting back to basics and not needing a bass boat with a 250 on it to have fun. I've had some phenomenal days of fishing in an 18ft jon boat with a 40hp jet.
Thanks Matt for your perseverance day in and day out, to get these videos out to us. It’s amazing to me how you guys still pull those big ones out still in less than ideal conditions. Great topic and tips!
Crappy day out fishing is still a better day then being stuck inside! And it was still an excellent video! 👊🏻💪🏻
Hey I love you man. That is what fishing is all about. That is how fishing and the love of fishing got started. Thanks for a very pure and down to earth video.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I like seeing you out on the aluminum rig, I'd say it's more relatable to most people, including myself...I'd say most of us aren't running around in 60+ thousand dollar rigs with a tournament load of tackle...I like the basics, just like you have going on....one tip, add a damn recessed trolling motor tray, it's killing my back just watching you having to adjust it😂 another great video man.
You guys should try the Warrior river in Alabama, it's a great place, you can do anything you want to do and never see another boat. It has ggggggg giant bass in it. They have a Friday night 1 fish tournament every week from March to November and you best have a 6 to even think about winning but a 7 to 8 normally does it
I assume you're talking about the Black Warrior river- or the Sipsey fork, or Mulberry fork, or Sipsey- who knows because every person I ask calls it something different. In Alabama there are 2 Sipsey rivers, 1 Sipsey fork, and 2 Sipsey creeks. And still ppl will be like "Let's go to the Sipsey." Which freaking one? So, what are you calling the "Warrior River"? I live about an hour west of the dam at Smith Lake- what most ppl call the Sipsey fork- it then runs down into something they call the Mulberry fork, and then runs all the way down to Tuscaloosa- is that the river you're referring to?
Gonna try that bottom hopping next. I just caught my PB of my local pond on a bluegill colored chatterbait with watermelon craw trailer.
Appreciate this video. These are my exact conditions and I’ve been beginning to wonder if it’s even worth dragging the boat out! Gonna keep going after it!
Looked like a miserable day to fish; nice job rescuing that drum. Had a lol at your definition of "old school". Anchoring with a window sash weight..THAT's old school. Thanks as always.
Good info for the dirty water we have so much of in the south. Looks like you found Jared Lintner's honey hole from a few years ago on the MLF on Chick. Great info Matt.
The most valuable thing said, and you’ve said it before, “Is your water usually stained and is a little more stained, or crystal clear and now chocolate milk?” I went out the other day throwing a firecraw spinnerbait with no luck. I remembered you saying that so I switched to a sexy Shad color and started catching fish! It was amazing advice!
Love these vids.
Fish and teach at the same time.
Thanks for sharing Matt
Good to see that the jet boat is old school setup..
As long as temperatures are on the rise in the water, then I love, absolutely love muddy water. I put a squarbill and a blade in my hand and go with it.
Good show.
Awesome video Matt. Very informative. Glad you actually went out on the super muddy water and still did a very informative video. Definitely needed that. Thanks again Matt. Keep them coming 👊🔥
Great stuff! I agree 100%. I fish Black Butte a lot which is rarely more than 1ft vis, and I have rarely caught fish on the ultra bright colors. Shad colors & white on moving baits, black or Green P on jigs and plastics is all I use there now. Took a few years to figure that out but I’m a little slow. 🤣🤣. Thanks again, love your channel. Still feels weird knowing you’re all the way over in eastern TN. Hoping all is well with you and your growing family.
Making me late for work again...thanks Matt
Thanks man got to pick up some of your recommendations for chatterbait trailers
Thanks for sharing
Boy do they love the jackhammer this time of year
I needed a new TB video today and it hit right on time! Thanks guys. Tight lines 🎣
Good job!
Good video Matt I new it had to be really cold when I saw the Shoes,😁
Nice white fish
They are cool looking
That green pumpkin shad jackhammer is my sleeper color of choice I pair it with a 4 1/4 " rage swimmer in electric shad with the boot cut off
Y’all def gotta make it back up to idaho soon. We been getting that 65 one day and 40 the next
Another great video. Caught a big one on the jackhammer this weekend and lots of fish on the new mini max!
I can't wait to try out the Mini Max, I'm up to 4 of em already & I haven't even got to throw one yet lol. Almost there, still got a couple weeks up here in Michigan.
I love the color of those fish, they remind me of the ones I caught as a child/teen in Tucson. We fish rattletraps almost year round in water about that color and they all came out that same white/silver color ( the bass ).
I have my first tournament this weekend, on a muddy lake. But the water temp is in the low to mid 60’s. Wish me luck!
Been waiting for this video. My home lake is creek fed and only 5 foot deep in most parts. It stays dirty year round. Very hard to catch fish especially in the warmer months when it gets choked out with weeds.
U guys should do a video for us kayak anglers..
I love your content thanks
Great work!
I’m in idaho and there is 3 inches of ice in the middle of my lake, but the water level rose 4 feet and there was open water in areas that filled up because of it. the water was chocolate milk and 40 degrees or less and I caught my first bass of the year. I have never been so excited over a one pound fish in my life
Amazing
GOOD MORNING The fish looks so big
We love you.
So I live in southern Kentucky between Dale Hollow lake and Lake Cumberland. There a beginner boat route that you all would recommend? Prefer under $20k budget…. Good reliable east to fish setup.
Hey Matt sorry to hear about the champion. Sucks having a boat out of commission. I was hoping for some advice. I have a lowe aluminum boat and was wondering of there's anything I can do about the sound from the water slapping up against the hull? Or does it really matter??
I don't own a boat yet but when I do I'm gunna just have a cheaper unit like ya said for depth and water temp but a person like yourself that guides or the tournament angler you need all that or your making it really hard for yourself
Wow that’s dedication! Thanks for taking us out…
Question: I don’t have a dedicated Chatterbait rod - what do you think of EMTF Levante with 15# flour for this?
Would you always use a straight tail trailer versus a paddle tail or something to push water in those conditions?
I only have a small aluminum boat I decked out but I enjoy not using the graph. Don’t get me wrong I love using technology, especially ice fishing. Maybe when I get a bigger boat I’ll feel different.
At 9:45 Matt nets a drum. We call those Tennessee Smallmouth around here! =P
Highland Reservoir zero grass what is the best chatterbait rod. I love my Exprides thanks to you guys but dont have a glass rod. Expride glass and Gloomis BJR are the ones we see you using. Dock, rocks and laydowns and early spring flooded brush is what I have to fish.
Who makes that boat you have ? And what model is it if you don’t mind letting me know. I know you also have a champion but this is the one I’m asking about
Hey Matt, do you still use the Expride for chatters? You know I bought that rod because of you and now you switched it up on me! 😂 How's the g Loomis differ from the Expride?
I always struggle this time of year on what bait to use... what temp is the water when you're fishing in this video? I have success with the chatterbait but always struggle when to make the jump to using it. Current water temps here in VA are about 53 degrees. Chatterbaits don't tend to work for me until 60+ degrees.
What? No flip flops Matt? Okay. It's pretty daggum cold. ✌️🎣
Can you give more info on the boat and motor you have?
Quick question for you guys. The new 7'2" heavy Expride. Would you recommend for jigs? 3/8-1/2 in sparse cover/docks. Thanks!
Don’t distract me, I’ve got to get ready for work 😩
Great video, I just started Chatterbait fishing this past year and I love it! Up here in the north east the ice is gonna go out in a few weeks, any suggestions for ice out bass fishing?
Throw the jackhammer right away! I’ve smashed them 1st 2 trips after ice out here in MA
I'll be chucking chatterbaits in a few weeks too! I'm in the same boat.
Its a good time for trying baits but last prespawn I crushed them on jerk baits, glide baits, swim baits big and small, and even open water froggin... having a 5lb'er hit a frog in April breaks your brain the first few times haha
Novice here. What is " ice out"? I'm assuming it's as soon as the ice melts on a body of water. Is that correct?
@@michaela.kelley7823 yup
@@johnmango6056 thanks
Bout that time😎
Thanks for the video. I’m still waiting for my 5 NRX+ rods I ordered from your TW link back on Black Friday 2021..😞👎
What about hair jigs this time of year?
Caught my PB a few days ago from the bank on a sexy shad chatterbait.
I definitely agree, technology is a good tool but u can absolutely catch fish without it. I've been a kayak angler for going on my 7th season now. I still don't have any tech on my yak. I am saving for a 10" unit but I've fished this whole time without anything & I definitely catch my share of fish. I do think it will help me put a few more fish in my net. Help me fish more productive areas & not waste as much time on dead zones.
Love this video Matt ! Informative and back to the roots of how bass fishing started is my kind of vid ! I own a 14 foot Valco with 20 horse 4 stroke and all I've got on it ,as far as electronics, is a Striker 4 ! I like it that way so I don't lose my intuitive bass finding instincts lol .
I'm running around on a 16' smoker craft with a 30 Yamaha 2 stroke tiller and dual 7" lowrance elite ti2...basic as hell and it's a bass and walleye catching machine. I wish I had something bigger and nicer but it does everything I need it to and it's cheap to operate....and in times like these I'm GLAD I have a tiny
@@c.shoefish a down sized boat is definitely a plus in today economy ! I'm whackin bass as well as striper on a local river and some of our local lakes .
How was the ride back in?
What kind of boat are you in?
I love drum
Were are you fishing today
What's the best square bill for wood?
It's crazy how most Tennessee River lakes look the same.
Love your dedication. How can a bank fisherman take advantage of new technology?
look up start bobber style fish finders
@@brandonwood4249 Thanks, I own one and I do not find it to be much of a game changer.
Do you fish the Tokyo rig bassmd
Is it my lying eyes or is Matt wearing the strangest pair of flops you've ever seen lol.
I see people kill drum to go to waste below the dam on Ray Roberts and they have no idea that it’s a great fish to have in our fisheries. We have destructive zebra mussels and drum eat them. Small drum are actually great filleted and deep fried. Much better eating than sandbass or striper.
Man. I hope their isn’t anything wrong with the champion. But I do love the jet boat videos.
Believe it or not you're the first to ask... the transom separated from the top cap. We try to always focus on the good so I didn't mention it. Another week or two and it will be back in action 👍🏼 I LOVE my jet but not on windy 20 mile runs 😂
@@tacticalbassin datgum man. That makes me sick to think about. I’m glad you’ll be up and running soon and are staying positive though. I know that ain’t easy because you and Tim are in possession of some unicorns.
Well I haven't had much luck with the red thing . Think I know why. There is a great article from a publication called (FIX) by a man named Steve Starling he is an Aussie Fishing Writer. You would think that would be an American thing?! Anyways you have to check this out. Found it on ( Kayak Hacks Fishing) a great small channel. Anyhow basically Red is the color that Fish have the hardest time picking up/seeing , Black is the easiest. Also article says basically once under the surface really Gray, Blue, Black is the only color/shades that fish see. Apparently light penetration and reflection is everything? For sure worth a looksee to any hard core angler whom doesn't already know these things. Im still going to keep trying the red during this early pre-spawn period, because I trust TB and know I just got to find my own confidence in the red !
Drum think he has a mouth of a largy choking on that white bass. Cool saving that drum
Where is he fishing in this video
Hey guys, the little john 50 in red was sold out so I did some research and ended up getting the green pumpkin color. I know its not ideal for spring but can someone recommend which situations it's good for? (Pale green side with black craw stripes, black top, orange bottom)
Matt when you guys are going to make some stickers
Hadir pertama 💪👍 ❤️🇲🇨
watching this made me feel cold... haha
All the technology really makes it less sport and less difficult to catch fish it’s kinda not even a sport anymore
matt with shoes 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Way to save a drummm
Do you guys have a favorite swimjig rod? A heavy cover swimjig rod and I sparse cover swi.jig rod
The weathermen have been wrong a ton recently
Why whits bass
Senko
East Tenn rule #1. Never get in the boat without a complete set of rain gear. rule #2 Always remember weathermen lie. See rule #1
lmao his aluminum boat still has more motor than my tracker...
No flip flops? Where are the flip flops?
So basically you’re fishing in any given pond in Connecticut 🤪
Definitely too cold for flip flops
Yes I did have a good day watching you going fishing but you never changed over your fishing River you kept using that same warm it is kind of weird you know keep using the same way over and over
1st
Get out of the weather
