I’m Mexican and my mom hyphenated our last name so it’s my dads last name first and then my moms but not everyone does this many of my cousins only have their dads last name, I honestly prefer two last names and if I ever get married I would just hyphenate it as well, my mom uses both her married and her maiden name and I will do the same.
I am guessing that this is the case of the guy coming from a very traditional Chinese family. I grew up in Chinese family too. The mom bringing up Chinese calendar system and Chinese beliefs all the time really pointing towards them being one. Hence, probably also why he is so powerless against his mom's words. I can't really say if he was manipulated by his mom to do all these things after being so happy with his daughter at first, but it just felt like that to me. Still not something forgivable though.

Literally unless you were a petri dish baby(no judgement if that's the case) that's not possible. You can wish for whatever gender you want, but the sperm that fertilizes the egg holds the genetic code for the gender. You also can't tell in ultrasounds what the gender is until the fetus reaches a certain developmental stage, all babies look like blobs for the first couple of months. I don't know if you could potentially test tissue from your cervix or something to see if there's a gender marker in the genes or something, but that's not choosing the gender so much as learning what it is. Literally petri dish babies are the only way to choose the gender of your baby.

I’m Mexican and my mom hyphenated our last name so it’s my dads last name first and then my moms but not everyone does this many of my cousins only have their dads last name, I honestly prefer two last names and if I ever get married I would just hyphenate it as well, my mom uses both her married and her maiden name and I will do the same.

I am guessing that this is the case of the guy coming from a very traditional Chinese family. I grew up in Chinese family too. The mom bringing up Chinese calendar system and Chinese beliefs all the time really pointing towards them being one. Hence, probably also why he is so powerless against his mom's words. I can't really say if he was manipulated by his mom to do all these things after being so happy with his daughter at first, but it just felt like that to me. Still not something forgivable though.

So I have as first surname my father's first surname and as second my mother's first surname

Literally unless you were a petri dish baby(no judgement if that's the case) that's not possible. You can wish for whatever gender you want, but the sperm that fertilizes the egg holds the genetic code for the gender. You also can't tell in ultrasounds what the gender is until the fetus reaches a certain developmental stage, all babies look like blobs for the first couple of months. I don't know if you could potentially test tissue from your cervix or something to see if there's a gender marker in the genes or something, but that's not choosing the gender so much as learning what it is. Literally petri dish babies are the only way to choose the gender of your baby.

I hope that op gets full custody in the divorce because this man does not deserve to have access to this child in my opinion if he's so willing to abandon them over the fact that the child is a girl. I'm Cuban/Costa Rican and for us, and I believe other Hispanic cultures as well, we have two last names, actually four but the last two dont tend to be on legal documents. On legal documents, some people will have one last name as a last name while the other as a middle name, some will use both and hyphenate, some with have only one. When I was in school, my last name was only ever my dad's, and then randomly in 11th grade I couldn't login to my student account, turns out it got changed to both last names. Generally a full name will have two last names from each parent, and the order will be: First Name, Dad's Last Name (From his dad), Mom's Last Name (From her dad), Dad's (from his mom), Mom's (From her mom).

As they mentioned in the video, I don't know what their culture is, but just to clarify one thing for those who are curious how it's actually like in Spain, taking into account they mentioned something about it hahaha Here you actually have 2 surnames, first the father's and then the mother's. In terms of the name it self, they can have 1 or 2 names (however you prefer), but not more at least that I know of, because for example my father, who is argentinian, had 3 names and then his father's surname, but here he had to change it, so he doesn't have his 3rd name anymore and had to add his mother's surname as well.
Another thing I'd like to add but this time from Argentina, is that many years ago once a woman got married to a man it was different to the States, you wouldn't change your surname to your husband's, you would add it at the end this way: "Maria García de Linares". So it's her name "Maria", her surname "García", the preposition "de" -which means "of" in English- and lastly her husband's surname "Linares". I haven't been in Argentina in 20 years, and it seems that this has now changed. Nowadays, either spouse can choose to use the other's surname, with or without the preposition "de."

In Spain we have 2 last names: 1 from one parent and 1 from the other parent.
Traditionally it was always the father's first and then the mother, except for same-sex marriages (legal since 2005), who could choose the order, for obvious reasons.
Since 2017, all parents can decide which last name will go first. But only for the first born, since all the siblings have to have the same last names, so the next babies will get their 2 last names automatically.
In Spain some people have a middle name (it’s not the most common) and we all have two second names, one from the father and the other one from the mother. Usually the father’s last name goes first, however, you can have your mom’s last name first or even only get her names if your dad is not in your life
If your dad is not in your life you get your mom’s two last names (I hope I’ve explained this right)

So. My husband's family has their 1st granddaughter 2 years ago. She's the baby of all my nephews. There are 3 boys. While they have wanted a girl for years (my husband only has brother's), they have given the boys absolutely nothing but LOVE. I love all my nephews and my niece. They make me so happy. I cannot believe the audacity of this family to do this over a gender.
I want to have my own kids some day. We both would love to have a boy 1st but we would be equally as happy to have a girl, we have had their names picked for years.
