So happy you're learning Japanese. It's such a fun language and I find it so meditative when studying it because it's so different and challenging. A word of advice... when in doubt, katakana it out!
@CouchPolyglot Genki for grammar. Wani Kani for Kanji. And reading for vocabulary and understanding more of the sentence structure and grammar. If you want something that's more slowly paced than genki, but still teaches you grammar and vocab, then check out Japanese from Zero. He also has a RUclips channel where he goes through each chapter of his book for FREE. ❤

the only way to get good at this language is to actually practice speaking it to people or to yourself out loud in your own environment. This is because it is so different. I’ve been studying it for 8 months and the best thing for me was making japanese friends and practicing
Your skills after 30 days are great! I just started learning Japanese too, it is a very fun language. I've been using Pimsleur which is focusing primarily on speaking and I like it a lot. I'm also using WaniKani to learn kanji. I'm a native English speaker so it's not easy, as you said, but at least it's enjoyable :)
Neat that you started learning Japanese! I lived in Japan for 2 years (I have since moved back to the US), and I only really learned survival Japanese. Japanese grammar and pronunciation is pretty easy, but the writing systems are really challenging. I could recongize some Kanji, but only for things like names of cities and train stations. It's a cool language, and I kinda wish I had learned more while I was there. But I doubt that I will use much of it again! You should try Korean next. The grammar is extremely similar to Japanese, but the pronunciation is more difficult (at least for me). But the writing is exponentially easier than Japanese, due to lack of Kanji or Hanja as they call it. I've only studied Korean for about 8 months, and I think I know more of it than I do Japanese! Interesting video!

"2 years" sounds like a lot, but if you study let's say once every two weeks, it is really "only 24 days a year". And I do think that if you study every day the learning effect is bigger. I like doing it daily, even if it is for 10 minutes and at the same time I try to take it easy and enjoy the process :)

Hello Laura. Very refreshing to see this video of your experience with Japanese. Makes me think of my experience learning Russian (which I’ve been working on for over a year - with its different alphabet, and words so different from the other languages I know) - not spending excessive time - replaying basic videos multiple times - and on certain days when it may be harder to focus, turning to Russian with Max which is pure fun to listen to. Impossible to make huge progress when working on maintaining multiple other languages - but making my Russian experience “fun” (as you are doing for Japanese) and not fixing any “set goal” makes “touching” that language in some form for limited time each day fun. So even though learning Japanese is not in my forseeable future - I enjoyed listening to your approach to a brand new and totally different language! - :)
I did not know or remember that you were learning Russian, I can relate to what you are saying cause for years it was the hardest language for me. It is amazing once you can understand interesting content in such a language. I think it will take forever to be able to do that in Japanese for me hehehe But one day at a time 😄
Welcome to the Japanese learners club. It has been the most confusing language for me. Each time you are finally learning something, you find out that nobody speaks like that. You find out you must learn the same thing in many, many different ways, and each way has its own particular context. And not only this, the grammar is so confusing. "The verb goes at the end", which in English and Spanish can sound like an innocent fancy way of speaking, is nothing, nothing compared to what you will face 😂. A very fun language to learn.
The grammar definitely is so different to European languages, just wait until you're reading a long sentence in Japanese, it's like the structure of the sentence is in reverse! But yes as you mentioned, loan words usually from English take some of the pressure off. 頑張ってください！

My second language. Unfortunately they always teach formal. Japanese is really simple and fun when you speak informal. Formal: watashi wa piza wo tabemashita. Informal: piza tabeta! :)

If you are already passed this stage, like I knew all the words and phrases you mentioned, but I still feel like a beginner, would you still recommend starting the beginner course?
Both Japanese grammar and pronunciation are easier than English. The real challenge is kanji. Even though it is slow, the best way is to write them down on paper. There are online kanji dictionaries that teach you the stroke order of each kanji. Don't try to memorize the pronunciation of each kanji. The pronunciation of kanjis may change depending on the word that the kanji is part of. So it is much better to memorize the word instead of the kanji.

I just made sure to learn a bit every day, the good days it was 30-45 minutes, but most days probably only 15 minutes. I did not want to make it too crazy (like one hour a day), cause it is hard to find so much time every day. But I guess I could have learned more if I had had a more strict schedule. Are you learning Japanese? :)

hehehe I did not learn it IN 30 days, but FOR 30 days ;) I am a super beginner, obviously! But I am sure with the right strategy, you could learn it in 30 seconds :)

🤔 ese metodo suena a Assimil, pero como sea si funciona almenos para lenguas romances porque de los otros tienes que aprender el alfabeto 😁
En el caso de Story Learning, al principio del curso de japonés tienes la versión escrita en romaji y poco a poco se va introduciendo Hiragana :)
