  • The history of nuclear weapons began in the early 20th century with scientific discoveries in atomic physics, leading to the development of the first atomic bomb during World War II. The Manhattan Project, a secret U.S. government research initiative, successfully tested the first nuclear bomb in July 1945. Shortly after, the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, in August 1945, leading to Japan's surrender and the end of the war. The destructive power of these bombs highlighted the potential of nuclear weapons, sparking an arms race during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. This period saw the development of more advanced and powerful thermonuclear weapons, as well as the establishment of international treaties aimed at controlling nuclear proliferation. Despite efforts to reduce stockpiles and prevent the spread of nuclear technology, the presence of nuclear weapons continues to shape global security dynamics today.
