  • Опубликовано: 6 май 2024
  • Lt. Gen Dr. S.L. Narasimhan (R) was commissioned as an Infantry Officer in 1977. Holding a Ph.D. in India-China relations, he has received four awards from the President of India for his contributions to the Indian Army. A specialist in the Chinese language, he studied China and its history for eighteen years. Additionally, he served as the Defense Attaché at the Indian Embassy in China and held positions as a former member of the National Security Advisory Board and DG of the Centre for Contemporary China Studies.
In the latest ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash, he discusses China's economic growth and Xi Jinping's ambitions for global dominance. He elaborates on Xi Jinping's objectives through the Belt and Road Initiative and its potential implications for India and the world.
Dr. Narasimhan suggests that India must exercise caution in handling border disputes with China, as faceoffs might occur along the Line of Actual Control with Beijing. He also delves into China's interests in the Indian Ocean region and provides insights into China's demographic transition.

Laxman, I think you need to account for the fact that China is extremely hostile towards India. It hacks Indian nuclear and port infrastructure, steals its land and surrounds India with hostile political entities who have been bought. It sends nuclear parts and weapons to Pakistan, arms red rebels. It is also ready to steal Indians water supply at any point in time. It will interfere in Indian elections. Only a fool will trust China. They have historically not abided by ANY agreed ruling or action. Geopolitics is NOT for the idealistic or naive. It's a dirty, scary reality. Also if you know Indian history, you already know the views Mao had regarding ownership of India's land. He wanted to annex it quite early. And our foolish Nehru permitted it.

The Chinese is pragmatic, its stand never changed, China's stand back from 1962 is: doesn't recognize that the Johnson's line in the west and the McDonald Line in the east as border lines because those lines were drawn randomly and unilaterally by Englishmen, not agreed by both sides back then. But China willing to do a swap, i.e. India takes what currently held in the east, and China takes currently held in the west. From India's stand, India wants both, this what the real problem lies.

Yes definitely the colonial boss created lots of problem around the world included this border issues. China and Indian are old civilizations and they both has respected and shared each wisdoms, cultures for thousands of years before these colonizers were even a country back then. They never fought each other and live in peace side by side with no border issues. I think India should meet China's half way and resolve border issues and become a peaceful brother again.

It is still a mystery that India with its 1.4 billion people has only one-fifth of China's GDP. My belief is if India concentrates on building its economy and does not have too much infighting at home or playing the politics between the US, Australia, and Japan against China, it can improve. If India gets to the same level of the Chinese in the future, they will also have the same treatment as the US has given the Chinese today. The US has a track record of using a "Divide and Conquer" strategy, playing one country against another. Any country that threatens to be a superpower is a threat to the US and India is no different. The West for its years of dominance from the British Empire to American Imperialism will not want to see an Asian power. India should understand that. The sub-continent should try to emulate China's success and provide a strong partnership with China in Asia. Being the world's largest democracy counts for nothing if you cannot put food on the tables for the people. A strong India-China relationship is good for the prosperity and peace of Asia and the world.

china was also pretty much at the bottom in 1970, below india. things are always easier when its an autocratic govt and a lot of USD inflows. in india, land acquisitions are not that easy as peoples rights matter, and environmental laws, lot of human language and cultural diversity etc are there..dont forget china developed rapidly because of inflow american capital and largesse+ authoritarian CCP govt. they were used by US to counter USSR, just like how india is trying to be used by USA to counter china. but india too like china is playing smart and only does whats good for her people. india is not in a race with anyone and it is developing organically and wont collapse even if foreign capital and exports dry up. however i have nothing against chinese people, theyre afterall facing same problems like all of us and if they succeed in life we are happy.

China has an economy based on FRAUD and DEBT - so the stock market in Hong Kong and China has lost several TRILLION dollars of value - mostly due to the housing/real-estate fraud. Chinese internal debt is monumental and the Chinese trains - fancy and all - don't make money in many routes. India has a more "real" economy - though China has been miles ahead because it combines communism (dictatorship) with shrewd capitalism. But it's saddled by bad debt, overcapacity, and real-estimate market fraud - that was over-valued by trillions.

Today, the wealthiest newborn in the world is Chinese. Thanks to three generations of the one-child policy, this newborn inherits the wealth of 14 ancestors. They won't need to work for a living; there will always be enough Indians willing to go to China for better wages, just as we go to Europe, America, and the Middle East today. Nepal has already sent Hindu Gorkhas to serve in the Chinese army.
China handles capitalism better than America did in 2008 during the housing crisis. While the American government bailed out banks at the expense of taxpayers, China, as an actual capitalist, is allowing Evergrande to sink and go bankrupt when facing a similar housing problem.
A wealthy man does not need his children to support him in his old age. The newborn is the richest in the world today and can financially afford to retire young.
The Chinese political system is based on MERITOCRACY. This system encourages highly educated Chinese to join the PLA. China has managed to expand its influence worldwide in a civilised manner and has not fired a single bullet across its borders in the last 40 years. India should adopt the Chinese political system and not reinvent the wheel as in the last 40 years, China has solved similar problems that India faces today.

Chinese demographics are currently so weak due to the one-child policy that within 20-30 years they will have inadequate numbers for their own industrial capacity. They need to export but other countries like Mexico, Vietnam, and India have more competitive wages - and will become challenges due to recent labor wage hikes and increased cost of logistics (shipping). They have some opportunities to remediate things but also lots of bad debt and excess debt - their official figures do not represent the actual debt due to accounting "tricks" and processes. They are not in a good place in demographics or the numbers of newer consumers coming into their economy.

While India should be cautious of China, the guest has to consider few things:
    1. Going back to 2009, in the USA, a good section of knowledgeable and influential people have not believed China’s statistics. Believe it at your own risk.
    2. Please, China is not a Developed country. At best you can call it middle income country; consider GDP of $12K compared to $70K in developed countries, so a lower growth for a middle incomes country is significantly different from that of a developed nation.
    3. If anything, with the intemperate stance China has taken, China, has its best days behind it rather than ahead of it.
    4. China’s exports will grow till it does not. Manufacturing is going back to developed countries in a significant way. The trivial stuff they will build outside, but in another 5 years, USA will see a surge in manufacturing.

China is not quite there but in a "gray zone" in the area of power - their military is not truly at a superpower level (without nuclear weapons being factored in...) despite the size - AND - their economy itself is highly debt-saddled. But POLITICALLY - they have few really powerful friends or alliances - they are nowhere at the level of the US which has NATO and Asian alliances (around 36 countries). They are not really a world power but have the "size" of a world power. But they are nowhere as powerful as either the US or even EU politically speaking.

    • @Ray5C0rn3r

@@Shiv1971I doubt that, China has Russia as ally, Russia is no joke, it's under sanctions from the entire west, literally fighting Ukraine backed by the entire NATO for years and at the same time fighting proxy wars in Africa using the Wagner mercenary group and still their economy is growing. Russia also literally has the world's second strongest military and a nuclear arsenal that is actually bigger than even US. So the alliance with Russia alone makes China a terrifying force. China + Russia is scary, even to NATO.

Indians who realise the benefits from this speaker is taking the first step in understanding the Chinese, but the biggest impediment is to be judgemental about the Chinese, rather to accept Chinese thinking latches on to its history , a discipline that is foreign to outside the Chinese. One needs a paradigm shift and mustn’t consider it as compromising, rather as acquiring a new tool to interpret a different thought process. Achieving the Results demands the laxity in Time to enable the crystallisation of the many variables, which once clearly assessed, all impediment will be brushed aside. The Chinese are not averse to paying the price for mistakes, but it’s a lesson, that is well learnt. This leaning obviates any resistance to complying to all the Laws of Science, but it doesn’t cope well with the vicissitudes present in human behaviour of other cultures. Chinese are quick learners, and are adaptable; but there is no compromise with their core values, a trait common with all civilised and highly developed societies. China wants its say and if in being able to do so, becomes a Super Power, so be it ; but she doesn’t concentrate
by striving to be one. They are goal orientated , be it health, wealth or harmony-
    Simply confounding.

❤❤❤❤ China and India have been friendly neighbours for thousands of years and there is absolutely no reason why they cannot be good friendly neighbours for thousands more years.
There is a lot of love and respect among the Chinese for the Indian people. In fact they made Lord Buddha whom they regard as a devine Indian teacher their de facto God. The Chinese people and the Indian diaspora have been treating each other as brothers and sisters. You can clearly see this in a place like Malaysia where the Chinese and Indians regard the Buddhist and Indian temples as their own. In fact in Singapore the Chinese voted in an Indian as their President with a huge 74% majority against 2 other Chinese candidates. 75% of Singapore's population are Chinese.
Only Indians in India has a negative view of China mainly because of the persistent negative naratives perpetuated by the Western press for obvious reasons.😢😢😢

As such I disagree that its scale down is a failure. If you look at the past 10 years there are net successes vis a vis failures. As for the declining demographics there are conflicting reports. China's economy is at a turning point into high tech, AI and robotics which require less but better educated population. An economy and social service that cannot grow fast enough to cope with a growing population is a recipe for disaster.

China IS a superpower and wants friendly neighbourly relations with India. India should have also an independent and friendly approach to this neighbour. As long as India signs one military treaty with USA (who want to harm China as much as possible) friendly relations between the two asian giants cannot be possible. Indian foreign politics going into direction of becoming USA pawn in Asia is harmful for all asian nations. Once more: China wants good relations with India.
