Let’s Talk Tool Setup: Graduating from the “Mickey Mouse” Ranks

- I’ll admit, I started off with very few tools and essentials. Over the years, venturing out on longer trips, making friends, and seeing what experienced guys had, motivated me to step my game up, and come up with a setup that’s good enough for Baja or AZ Peace Trail journeys. These types of long rides require a whole other level of self-sufficiency, where help can be dozens of miles away.
After years of riding SxS’s, I’m still amazed how hard they can be driven, and when an issue arises, the ability to get them in driving condition or repaired is easier than most would expect.
My tool setup covers the “bare-bones” basics, items needed to fix common issues like radius rods failures, and we take it one step further, with additional parts and tools that have been gathered from personal experiences, to be ready for most issues you could encounter.
None of this compensates for the “loose nut behind the wheel”, and a word to the wise: back it down a little on long point-to-point trips, getting to your destination is the goal!
Comment below and let us know what we missed, maybe some hose clamps for a broken tie rod, or any other tricks you may have learned, let’s help each other out, as we do on the trail!

What did I miss?
Shit tickets.
First aid kit
Hose clamps !
We have used hose clamps to make splints with wrenches to hold upper A-arms together a few times.
Last time we did it on a Can-Am steering tie rod.
I was thinking that too, had a buddy loose a Tie Rod in Moab, don't know if the clamps would have held, but worth a shot.
Thank you.that is very helpful.I am knew at this game, just purchased a 2020 rzr 1000 xp and took it for a 40 mile ride.didn’t have tools but now I can start a tool bag.so thanks again..
A strong small magnet for when you drop stuff in the dirt/sand, you have great content on all your videos and a great attitude, kudos.
Thanks for the suggestion and compliment, and thank you for watching.
Bailing Wire and Vise-Grips. Held a lot of things together with these, even seen Vise-Grips used to steer a car in when the steering wheel hub broke.
Good ideas!
Yes, vice grips! I used vice grips as a throttle when my throttle cable broke on my XR 600 down in BAJA. I was about 5 miles from Mikes Sky Ranch and made it with vice grip as throttle. A bit hairy but that was 20 years ago when I didn’t think about those things. Lol 😂
Duck tape. Always have so on hand. Lots of uses. Great video if everyone took a pice it’s not that much but it does feel good to be the guy or gal that other can look to.
Good point!
So not sure if this falls in your tool box but medical kit especially if your in mexico its always good to fix your rig but even better if you can fix u ! 👍👍👍👍
Very true, just ordered a small first aid kit for this reason.
What I found to work great to fill tires is the Ryobi tire inflator. Being cordless really makes it easier, and it blows up 32's in about a minute.
Thanks I'll check it out.
tire plug kit, zip ties, and loc tite. Great video!!
Good catches, I forgot to mention I have a plug kit and zip ties in there.
Great suggestions! I would say for the NA rides that aren't as belt sensitive, that air pump, something like slime or repair kit, and a first aid kit. Definitely need to deal with tire pressure or a leak sooner than anything.
Hey Nick, great video
Thank you!
Thanks for this!
Who the hell disliked this?!?!
What kind of jack is that @5:39?
Sir Pay it’s an FOA screw jack.
What do you recommend for a jack...weekend warrior 4 seat rider with a couple kids....
hate to say it but a simple scissor jack works in all situations. I ordered the new Speed CO2 Jack (same as a Pro Eagle Phoenix) for $400 but it wouldn't be ideal if I needed to replace an axle. I think the Trayco is probably the best, for $800 is too pricey for most.
@@ChupacabraOffroad appreciate it!
Mastercraft links are broken.
Man that's 1/100th if what we all carry around here. Go 5-15hrs into the bush away from civilization and your gonna want ALOT more then this. This is what I take riding around the farm or local crown land
