  • I'm sharing my process for painting bathroom walls and how I found the best paint and drywall primer sealer for my bathroom in this episode of my "Bathroom Makeover On A Budget" series. Bathrooms are humid and steamy which makes picking the best primer and paint for your bathroom walls and ceiling really important. You want a good primer and paint that helps to make your bathroom walls mold and mildew resistant. You also want to make sure you properly prep your space and pick the right products so the paint doesn't peel.

    OMG...I just refinished my tub and sink to my new home. I plan to paint my bathroom and bedroom walls next weekend on a budget. Your videos are so helpful. I really appreciate you sharing your experiences with everyone. Thank you.

      Thank you so much! I really appreciate your comments and I love to hear from other women doing their own DIYs, it makes my day. That's awesome you got your tub and sink refinished, how did it turn out? Did you end up using the same paint that I used or did you go with something else? Good luck painting your bathroom and bedroom!

    This is an amazing transformation! So much attention to detail. Very helpful information. A tidbit learned to help me be less messy when pouring paint is using painters tape or packaging tape to form a "V" on the top of cans in order to direct the flow. On gallon cans I use 2" wide tape or add an extra strip of narrow tape. On smaller cans the tape width isn't an issue. I admit I wasn't aware they sold pour-lids with detachable spouts. That makes it easier to stack paint for storage = so helpful. New subbie.

    Prep work: Put cat and his litter box elsewhere and shut the door and listen to him Meow Meow Meow like someone is killing him. Then open door and let cat in and watch him get into paint and whatever else he can find to cause trouble because the spare bathroom is where his litter box is (was). My cat has separation anxiety and thinks he's a person.

    This is an incredibly good video. For me, the only thing missing is a joint compound, as I need to fill some gaps first. Would have been nice to see what to use and how to do it in a bathroom, but I understand that's something you didn't need to do. Thanks for the other tips.

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  Год назад +1

      Thank you so much! If you're interested I actually did skim coat the walls in this bathroom using joint compound to fix the mess that my walls were. If you go to my channel it should be the video I posted right before this one. I hope that helps! Thanks again. 😊

    I just used that brand paint in eggshell finish in my bathroom and wish I went with the flat because I hardly use the room. It’s just too shiny. I was just worried about the steam and being able to clean it.
    I will say I lived in a rental house with flat paint in the bathroom and it constantly developed mold by the shower and was hard to clean.

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  Год назад +2

      I had the same concerns, our 5 kids share this bathroom so it gets a ton of use. I actually just got done cleaning the walls in there a couple weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised by how well this paint cleans. The constant humidity doesn't seem to affect it at all. I know that doesn't help since you've already gone with the eggshell finish but in the future, if you decide to repaint, I hope that helps to ease your concerns just a little. I'm going to use this paint in every room, it seems so much more durable than the Sherwin Williams paint I had been using before.

      @@TheNiftyNester I couldn’t handle the shine. I bought the flat enamel paint and put another coat on my walls. It looks 100 times better!

    If you didn't get all the dust wiping down after the sanding it's really important to sand after the first primer coat.

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  2 года назад +2

      That's a good point as well. The little bit of dust on the walls won't hurt anything, it mixes in with the primer and is just an added solid in the primer but it can add to the wall texture.

    Am I crazy (well, ya, but you know what I mean), or, did you only paint your walls + trim w Behr Simply White, leaving your ceiling w 2 coats of Kilz primer only?

    How much paint and primer is needed?

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  Год назад +1

      It depends on the paint you're using, how many coats you'll need to do, and how big your space is. In a small room like this, I used less than one gallon for the entire room and the ceiling. Behr has a calculator that helps you figure out how much you'll need depending on the size of your room, and most other paint brands have a similar tool. It'll be the same with primer. It'll depend on how big the room is. I used closer to a gallon since I was covering joint compound, which is like priming new drywall. If you're covering an old paint color, it'll take a little less per square foot.

    Did you have your paint sprayer when you did this? If yes why not spray it?

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  2 года назад +4

      Yes I did have the paint sprayer at this point. You can use a paint sprayer indoors and it'll get the job done quickly but the finish won't be quite as perfect. After taking the time to skim coat the walls and ceiling I really wanted to get that perfect smooth finish with as little texture or variation as possible. Using a roller is the best way to accomplish that. You're also more likely to have overspray and get paint in places you don't want it when spraying interior walls. But when working on the exterior or other wood projects I'll definitely use the sprayer.

      Are you cleaning with a wet sponge after each pole sanding?

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  Год назад

      No, when you're sanding in between coats of paint you don't have to wipe the walls down at all in between. There's not really any dust created when sanding since you're just knocking down any bumps or weird texture and any dust that might be left will bind to the next coat of paint.

    Can i just prime without painting?

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  Год назад +2

      You can. It just depends on the look you want. I used a primer instead of a paint and primer in one since I was going over fresh joint compound. If you aren't sealing drywall or covering a dark color, you could use a paint/ primer combo to get the color you want. Primer by itself can be tinted but not much. It will weaken its adhesive properties. Primer itself looks pretty dull but if you aren't worried about the finish it'll be fine.
