Transitioning to single frame brood management was not all it was cracked up to be for me lol. I didn't have ability to check them every week and they all swarmed in June/July 😂
I know i'll have to watch for that. Hopefully i'll be able to keep them under control and have a bumper year. We'll see. I'll show it all, so time will tell. Thanks Noah.
Add multiple supers EARLY. I run D+M and have the same issue.
Re Single Brood Box use :
It's a better Method for Over Wintering Colonies. Not for Summer ! Just saying. . . 👍

Happy Beekeeping 2024

@@mmb_MeAndMyBees Single brood works great in the summer if you understand what you’re doing and why. Which obviously op did not given he was thinking he could keep honey bee biology in a single box. The whole point of single brood is to remove the old queen late spring to get rid of the swarming impulse. You can throw her with a couple frames of brood in a nuc box as a resource hive or sell/give to less fortunate club member once the original hive has requeened. Meanwhile, the original hive is making the new queen and it’s all proboscis on deck for collecting the spring flow. Did this the last two years and have not had a swarm since I started started it. Ian and Bob both do the same thing in the spring getting rid of the old queens that want to swarm is rule one of single brood…
@rstlr01 I did exactly that I split my colony in mid April and again in mid May. I stacked 3 supers above a queen excluder and kept queen below. I didn't have time (due to work) to check for a couple weeks they filled 2 boxes and part of 3rd with honey and swarmed. If I didn't work full time I would agree single box is 100% the way to go. I learned last year though until I go full time doing bees that won't be an option for me any longer.
Looking forward to seeing you transition and the your progress
I'm excited to switch over Jose. . I think that is the direction I need to go. Thanks for watching. Happy New Year and cya soon.
Happy New Year,Brain and thank you for your videos. Well see you at nabe
Happy new year! Cya there. . And I appreciate you watching. .
Hey Brian!!!…welcome to the dark side! Glad to see you making a move to SBM. You will have to start joining Charlie’s chat on Friday nights. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Happy New Year
Santa ! ! ! LOL . . I know. I'll have to catch a few. Friday nights are tough for me, but i'll have to make time after the New Year. Happy New Year my friend. .
😊or watch Paul Kelly
@vincegagnier3550 I've spoken to Paul and plan to listen to his presentation on SBCM at the conference in Kentucky.
Just found the channel this morning and loved the video along with all the information! We are just south in KY and just got started in May. Thanks for the info and Happy New Year!
I appreciate the support. Best of luck in 2024 with your colonies. The 2nd season is where the fun starts, splits and swarm prevention. Happy New Year. .
Single brood chamber! now your talking my language....Just smart beekeeping. And you do make more honey. --thanks Brian.!
Im looking forward to switching over Stan. Thanks for watching. . .Cya soon
Yes, I started with singles so I don't know any other way but I wouldn't do it any other way.
Last year was my first year doing all singles, never going back to double brood again. Made so much honey and was able to make lots of resource nucs if I thought the brood chamber needed room. Inspections were so much easier!
Bingo!
Looking good 👍 thanks for sharing. See you at Bee Expo 🐝!!!
Can't wait!
Looking good, Brian. I lost one in November (was one of the late summer swarms), but as of yesterday there have been no more losses. Now to get them thru Feb/March...
I can't wait to get to March and on with 2024. November was tough it seems.for a lot of folks. Thanks for watching. .
I had one loss in Nov. December was 100% survival when I checked yesterday.
November was a bad month for a lot of folks it seems. December, being really mild, has been good. The critical months are coming up though, Jan Feb March. Thanks for watching.
Much respect Mr. Brian. You literally replied to every comment. I thank you for your videos. You, Greg, and Bruce are like mentors to me and I’m sure many others. Keep up the good work. I wish you well, Happy new Year!!
I appreciate that. My thought is this, you've taken the time to watch so I can take the time to reply back. We are all part of a great community. Hope you have a Happy New Year. .
Good Luck this winter!
Thanks Tim. . Same, hope you have success and get a decent honey crop next year.
@@CastleHives thanks. Going in to winter with two colonies. Fingers crossed.
Ive learning over the years....if you cant be in your box weekly ...might think twice on Single Brood Chamber
My plan is weekly on Saturday. That is what I used to do anyways, so i'll go back to my old schedule and enjoy SBCM. .
Great video Brian. Looking forward to forward to seeing how things go for you as you transition to single deep management. Hope you hit that 5K mark before the conference!
Thanks Bruce. . I think SBCM will be the way to go for me, actually looking forward to it. And thinking of 5k is crazy to me. . Appreciate the friendship we have.
Brian, you pack so much practical info into your videos. The single brood system (I’m not a beekeeper) but sounds practical. Wishing you the best always and Happy New Year!
Thanks so much. I try is all. Next year will be a challenge, but that's ok. Happy New Year to you as well. .
Glad to see your bees doing good. Hope you hit 5k and have a great New Year.
Thanks, you too! Happy New Year. .
Neat round observation windows 😂
LOL. .
You may have lost three but you are still one of the best in my book Brian, your passion for your girls is first class. Take care and Happy New Year my friend.
Thanks, Tony. That means a lot. Happy New Year to you as well, my friend.
Thanks for your bee keeping 😊😊😊😊
Appreciate you watching. 🐝
Congratulations you hit your 5000 mark! See you in Kentucky!
Thanks so much!! Cya there.
Glad you are having success. I miss having bees but I’m not sure I would ever go back
Thanks Mike. . If you ever do, I know where you can get a colony. 😆 🤣
Hi Brian! Sorry to hear about November but so far so good right now from the looks of it. Way to go, it's fun to see how your setup is evolving. Congratulations on being so close to 5k! 🎉
Jessie. . I think back when I first started lives and you'd watch. Boy how things have changed. Next year will be my 8th year and exciting. Hope you had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. .
@@CastleHives yes things have definitely changed, but for the better it looks like. You're learning a lot. Thank you, I had a Merry Christmas and I hope you did too. Happy New Year!
@@JessieMillerUnboxingsandMore Great to hear.

Have a wonderful New Year 2024 Brian
Regards Sebastian from UK 🐝
Thanks, Sebastian. Wish you a wonderful 2024 as well.
Bees are looking good Brian. Looking forward to seeing you at NAHBE.
Thanks Russell. . It'll be nice to catch up.
Hey Brian we got to get some colder temps. Stores are being depleted very fast! To be 60 degrees in Northern OH and North Central WV this time of year seems crazy!! Im already planning to start feeding in mid-March!
Noah, it is nuts. I have a colony that has taken almost an entire fondant patty already. Cold weather would be nice.
On December 26th I went into a hive for curiosity and Queen was laying 1 frame had brood on each side I was surprised Have a Happy New Year from Northwestern Ohio
A frame of brood this time of year is good. I'm sure we'll have more losses due to extra flight, so that'll make up. This winter has been something so far. Appreciate you watching.
Brian, I enjoy your channel partly because we live in the same climate, so what works for you might work for me. With SBM do you intend to do the Demaree method?
I plan to film a video in the next week or so on my exact steps i'll take. Hopefully it'll help beforehand that way if I[m going to mess something up, folks can correct me.
Right out the gate I got a question...... How many cans of Great Stuff foam did each box take? lol Also, I noticed when you inspected the 2nd fondant patty, the lid on the first colony doesn't appear to be wide enough, do you have concerns of all this rain getting into the bees?
So you wanted sweats? Come down, I'll make you sweat! Plenty to do on the farm. lol
Was the aggressive hive a VSH queen? I am willing to bet.
Single brood management...With 13 double brood chamber boxes you could slit them and make 26 singles. I know your crazy about gaining more numbers! lol
Did you know we changed growing zones? This weather is nuts!
Im an Ohio beekeeper and I enjoy following you, keep up the good work, Brian!
I think I used like 7 cans of great stuff for all of the shims. The lid on a few had to be adjusted, they fit exact so if they are off by 1/2 inch the one side is exposed. And if i stop down, i'll visit ladybug and moose while you work. LOL. .
I'm going to try and pack out my lower boxes before I make splits. And, any additional will get sold beyond 15. I need to stay around that number so that I can manage them properly. This weather is crazy. I'm waiting for the cold so we can get back to normal.
And, appreciate the support Jason.
Ditto on getting away from the 8 frame - I have four and my goal is move them to 10 framers. I hope to meet you in person at NAHBE. I'm coordinating some fundraising and raffles for Hives for Heroes. I released a video promoting it. If you can spare some honey or other products to add to the raffle, let me know. I'm excited to hear about your new queen timing dial that you are doing with Jason. I'm not so sure about 100% transparency - that'd make it hard to see you! Happy New Year!!!
Hah, you can se right through me. Definitely look me up at NAHBE. And if I can swing it, I'll bring a 3d printed hive to give to you for the raffle. I should be able to. Happy New Year and cya soon.
Im doing a similar overwintering process for my hive. Will they eat more of the fondant if they need? (Instead of just a 3 inch circle in the middle). Want to be sure i can leave the fondant on there for longer.
They will consume the entire patty, given the time. I've seen colonies go through 2 complete fondant patties over the Winter.
What thermal camera are you using? Those pictures look nice!
Topdon TC101. They have one for Android, the 101, and one for Apple products. It is a nice unit and a fraction of the cost of a flir.
you will do great!! so much more fun with singles!! healthier also
Thanks Stan . .
Everything is looking great just that one hive of yours making mess and work for you but hey its beekeeping and they are looking strong 💪🏻
I'll fix that one here soon, I know what I did wrong. Can't wait for 2024. Happy New Year. .
Dang it , sorry Brian, I had wanted to be here to watch this with your all.
Looks like they are doing good buddy,👍Blessed Days.
Brian I think it's better that you lost those 3 in Nov when you did then a few months later. Now you can store away all that food for Spring splits, now your a step ahead.
It's funny you and I must watch a lot of the same videos.
You are running up against that same short season time line that I do us be Northerly beekeepers. I have kind of been forced into single brood chambers myself, it just seems more efficient for a shorter season. How do you like the Apimaye lids on the wooden boxes, I really like their new inner-feeder.
Hey DC. . No worries my friend. Hope you have a Happy New Year.
Are those 2lb or 5lb hive alive?
2lb.
Almost every youtube beek is pushing this hivealive stuff. People just need to focus on feeding during dearth and in the fall. Also, fondant in warmer states is just not necessary because bees are not restricted by cold temps for long time and they can easily access food.
I do not use the fondant as an emergency feed, more an insurance. They have weight, so it is more insurance for me. I do like the benefits it has on the gut health of the Bee. In NE Ohio, where i'm at, they will be cooped up sometimes for 3-4 months, so gut health is important. I guess we have trade offs according to our region. In the North we have cold, but do not have SHB like the south.
How is your bourbon honey doing.?
It is coming along nicely. I'll bottle it up the beginning of February. I can't wait to see how it tastes.
Huge fan of gorilla tape.
I LOVE it. .
Best beekeeper in the world
Well. . I appreciate that, but there are many others with more knowledge than I have.
