Sorry about the odd ending! I have sorted it in the RUclips editor but if you do see it have a good giggle 🤭. I'm on holiday and can't edit it any other way 😂
Daniel what I really like about your video's is that talk and show what your doing as I am really interested in trying black smith I've been hunting for an anvil been and looked at some but a friend said it would to much work to resurface anvil and my friend says that it have be on a mill and can't get someone with milk to grind the surface flat to weld on new steel 😪
Dang nice eye-punch, sir. Looks great. Where down you pick up a beater? I can't seem to find a reliable one who can hit square. LOL Just joking, I haven't even gotten a forge set up yet, long way from needing a beater. Thanks for the video. Guess to begin, I'll just have to hit it a few more times myself and hold the drift in a collar locked tongs made to fit. Can't wait to get started, but funding being what it is, could be a while. Being disabled sucks.
Daniel your videos are really getting good ,, this is a very informative video, thanks for giving both metric and imperial measurements. I have been wanting to make this tool now I have more than just my imagination to do it...the first one Im did was a repurposed ball peen hammer. Now I can have one made from scratch.
Thank you for this! I landed here on my writer's research for my book. So, just to make sure - the part (drawn out cheeks) of the hammerhead enclosing the handle is ALSO called "eye"? I searched for parts / anatomy of a hammer pictures on Google and was a bit confused by that. Also, I would like to know, what place would be preferred for engraving touchmarks on a hammer? Is that individual? I thought to describe very small, almost hidden ones in my book along with other special marks serving as a sort of certificate. Thanks in advance! Viola
G'day Dan, I made a rounding hammer yesterday in a class but had a striker. Regarding content I'd be interested in seeing some techniques for punching hammer eyes etc where the person may be working solo and not have a ton, (or many tonnes ;), of equipment. I imagine a lot of people starting in this area would be in that situation. Sorry if you've already covered it. That's a great looking tool BTW.
Nice work ! You might want to consider dressing the mushroomed head on that one hammer . I seen two fellas drifting out a track pin , one swinging a sledge hammer and the other holding the pin hammer , and a piece of the mushroomed face on the pin hammer broke off when the sledge hit it and went through the cheek of the fella that was holding it - he sports a pretty nasty scar on his face now .
Great video Dan, Lovely hammer eye punch. Going to try to make one of those with no power hammer and no striker ! wish me luck LOL Thanks for sharing your knowledge mate. 👍⚒
Hi Daniel. I really like your work, been binge watching your channel all week haha and i'm really glad i found your channel. If I may suggest, try welding up a couple 4 inch lengths of round bar onto 1/2 inch flat (so they don't tip over or roll away). Make the round stock's top face the same radius as your favorite hammer making fuller. Then you can set those on opposite sides of your hardy while you're driving the drift. This will protect the cheeks and any unwanted marks on the tools you're forging, especially on rounding hammers. I've also seen similarly where someone made vice toppers for the same purpose and work just as well as long as the vice is setup low enough to let you power the drift in without being too awkward (i do mine on a striker anvil). Keep making awesome videos :)
Thanks a lot Daniel, that was the video I needed to see for my hammers ^^. The list of tools I still need to get in order to make a hammer gets shorter and shorter. Nice. So I will reorder a few hammer blanks for making hammer eye punches. I think 3 blanks should do it, one will be good. ^^
Really enjoyed this video, this is a tool thats on the top of my to-make list so having a really nice step by step process to follow is going to be really helpful for that. I did have a question though I noticed that you put a wedge in your handle to keep the punch on, I've also seen some people suggest not putting a wedge on and just re-seat the handle whenever it gets loose because struck tools like these tend to break handles. Do you always seat the handles with wedges or do you sometimes not and what are your thoughts there? As always thanks !
Awesome work Dan I see merits of having the actual punch oriented in line with the handle and the opposite but haven’t used an in line version like you🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Very nice tooling sir! I saw a good looking hammer after the steps on you flypress. Also your wood working / handle / wegde Making has evolved. Take care.
Being as I grew up at a time when our country was just going metric I can convert metric and inferial in my head with no problems. But I do like your method of showing the measurements both ways for your viewers. 👍
Tine is often the same material. EN19 or 4140. Sometimes it can be made of 1045 as well. The nice thing about tine is in most places in the world it consider a piece of lifting equipment and there for must follow strict rules. One being an easily readable code to trace the steel to the manufacturer. So they quite often have details about the maker of the tine stamped on them as well.
I didn't say and I should have. I made this one to match my drift. Its quite a steep angle about 25-30 degrees. The tip is up to you I aim for 20-18mm some where around 3/4". Again this depends on your hammer drift. Less work is best and if your drift fits nice with little work that's always a plus. So make them match if you can.
One of your best video's so far Dan. Really good instructional content and it made me laugh at the start (the hand cards for the measurements was quality) and at the end. I often heard "You had four f*ing Shreddies this morning, didn't you?" in a sarcastic manner when someone turned into a beast. Not sure you're old enough to remember that ad campaign though. I always preferred Weetabix anyway. :)

Very well done and very well explained. Thank you.
Nice job, thanks for the instructional. I'm gradually making the tools to produce my cross pein, hard work without a striker or power hammer.
Thanks for great video. Any chance of some specs on finished punch? thanks, Eric
I actually have the material for this. Now I have the inspiration. Thanks Dude

Good show Dan. think imma have another crack at one of those next. I've already screwed up two of em. Maybe third time's a charm! Bonus footage c'mon
Nice striking Elliott, I can't compete with that. Lol yeah Dan you're okay too😁👊Great too see a video from you
Very nice.hopefully soon I'll get mine set up so I can start making things..you are awesome
Really good demo. Nice to see it being mostly done by hand.
I would have done it all by hand but time is always tight these days. Thanks for the great comment.
Dang nice eye-punch, sir. Looks great.

Very nice work!! I’m going to get right on this one!!!

Nice to see that done. Wishing I could come over for a class but Australia... sigh
Yet another must have tool really hope to meet you soon

It came out nice! Good job.
What a timely video, I was just thinking of making one of these! Cheers!

great show, thanks.
So is all forklift time the same basic steel? I have two that will become lots of different tools, and I’m curious what it may be.

Great video! Thanks for sharing!!
Beautiful tool.

Well done 👍
Good job as always! Keep on!
Great job
Seriously enjoy your videos!
Looks great ! ***** 5 Star
Times like this i wish i had a power hammer.
True man's job. Show me a woman who can swing hammers like a male blacksmith.
This guy is talented as f#@k!!!
Nice job Sir!!!
Well done Dan, were you going to put a point on the end.??
No point just a flat end.
Maybe I missed it, what taper angles and tip dimensions do you work to for the punch?
I didn't say and I should have. I made this one to match my drift. Its quite a steep angle about 25-30 degrees. The tip is up to you I aim for 20-18mm some where around 3/4". Great power HAMMER
Awesome, as usual.
Nice forging , great striker you have got but a bit too much use of a grinder
Nice end product though 👌
