    Summary of video:
When your body doesn’t feel safe it will not burn fat eg anxiety, busy, over scheduled
    1. Less is more - less exercise
    2. Mindfulness training- breath work, meditating, gratitude practice, massage
    3. Infrared sauna - gets to parasympathetic state faster
    4. Fast like a girl - read her book
    5. Sleep, sleep - you burn the most fat when at sleep; 7-9 hours

I am a big fan of your book and do IM. I took Manjuro and did not lose muscle. I purposely ate high protein and Healthy fat with few of natures carbs and weight trained and lost 22 lbs fat, decreased my % body fat, got off my Bp med and no longer had desire to drink alcohol and gained 3 of muscle. I’m now off Manjuro and maintaining IM high protein lifestyle like u ur book says. For me the shot gave me control to choose healthy food and broke my carb addiction and I stopped Diet sodas and alcohol. Everyone is diff but all my friends use the same provider and she insisted we eat 100 g of protein per day while on shots. If there was a week I felt zero appetite and couldn’t eat much she lowered my dose and monitored us closely each week and eventually Tapered me off after 6 months. I didn’t have trouble getting off. You and you videos helped me so much and continue to. Thank u

Daily fasting was the best thing I ever did. I did it unconsciously a few years ago only eating one meal a day, and dropped 20lb without thinking. I now have a 4 hour eating window. I get to eat some chocolate, I get to eat some carbs. A diet where you can't eat anything is literally unsustainable.

I feel that it takes time. I have been saying for years - it took me years to put the weight on, its going to take years to get the weight off.
I am grateful for the education of listening to my body, with fasting changes, exercise and meditation. All within the pressures of work, family and the schedules of life. At times it is not easy, but it has been happening.
I have lost 14kg since New Years and I feel great and starting to get rid of clothes that are too big 🎉

I was on semaglutide from 12/15/23 until 3/17/24. I didn't know it at first, but i had a severe reaction that caused my skin to hurt all over like a bad sunburn. Moving hurt, putting on clothing hurt, turning my head hurt, all of it. I would cry driving over bumpy roads. Dr's said I might have rheumatoid arthritis, shingles, estrogen loss, and many other possible scary diagnoses. I was tested for everything, but none of them were it, and they never conceded it was simply from the semaglutide. I've been off it for 11 days now, and my skin is 80% better. I love Dr. Mindy. She's my #1 go-to now.

Universities still teach that fasting is dangerous. I know this because my daughter, who is a university student, told me that fasting is dangerous. When you talk about the latest science behind fasting, when to you think out institutions of so called “ higher learning “ going to catch up with the latest science. It’s very frustrating that these institutions are actually holding us back.

I am so hoping that I can learn some things that will help me here. I lost 35 pounds living on protein and vegetables fasting 19 hours a day. BP came down, weight came down until it didn’t anymore. I hit the wall. I scrapped fasting and put the weight right back on with a few pounds.
This brought back echos of my high school anorexia. So unpleasant.

I decided to reset my fasting app to where it doesn't show my weight progress because as a visual learner and someone who gets obsessive over every little pound, I decided to keep the weight factor out of it for now and just concentrate on how fasting makes me feel.

I am so sick of hearing about prioritizing sleep....I do all the things, listen to deep sleep music, go to bed at the same time, use acupuncture pillow, tea, hot shower and MOST DAYS my Fitbit tells me I get 30-45 minutes of deep sleep. Frequently it's 13-25 minutes. Which is 6-9% Usually my REM is an hour to 1 hours 40 min. 12-20%. My awake is almost always 1hr/15min
I really can't control the quality especially Deep it's so FRUSTRATING

Take your Fitbit off, forget the special pillow and meditation. Relax in bed without your phone or tablet, turn your day off…whatever happened is gone, now you’re preparing for a new day! Have a chamomile tea (I use two bags) take your Magnesium Glyconate (this one helps with sleep) read a book. I promise you will sleep tight!

I'm raising my hand, possibly again, to be a test subject if you're personally wanting to perform studies/gather data. I'm 43, no sign of sleep disturbance or the change... yet. Thank you for all that you do, Dr. Pelz! I lost 80 lbs through fasting about 3 years ago and I was very close to my ideal weight (it took me a year), but unfortunately gained about 50 lbs back. I fast about 16 hours every other day. Fasting is not really a problem for me (used to do 42h regularly, up to 4 days), but refeeding is.
I have 2 questions: 1- I am post menopausal: is Fast Like a Girl a good book for me? I’m trying to motivate myself… 2- How can I make sure I get all the nutrients I need, especially vitamins and fiber, if I fast a lot again? Thank you!

My kidney specialist specifically told me there is a rise in vegans and vegetarians having kidney stones due to eating high oxalate foods like kale, spinach, nuts…. He told me to make sure I shouldn’t eat a lot of these foods, but once or twice a week won’t hurt me since I’m not a vegan or vegetarian, but I do eat vegetables. I had kidney stones that were struvite causing UTI’s and one tiny stone that had both infection and oxalate. My father and brother always have had kidney stones no matter how much they regulated their diets. I was shocked when I got stones in 2019 and then bladder crystals causing UTI’s for 2 years and made me oral antibiotic resistant. It was horrible and took 2 years to figure out what was causing this never ending UTI. Had surgery this summer to remove the urethra/bladder neck crystals. I drink 64 ounces of water daily and only water. So when I’m told to eat leafy greens and nuts during my eating window, I worry about getting kidney or bladder stones from my past experiences.

Please please please do a video on protein, fasting and building muscle. So many longevity experts are talking about the need for muscle for long term health and wellbeing, and the need for higher levels of protein (1-2g per pound of desired body weight) to build said muscle. That can mean >150G protein per day, which I sometimes find hard to ingest during the narrow eating windows typical of the FLAG lifestyle. There's also evidence suggesting that the distribution of protein intake (leucine in particular) throughout the day is critical to building and maintaining muscle, so again, how to optimise and reconcile with the FLAG lifestyle? I figure that you, Dr Mindy, must be exploring these things yourself with your own strength building focus this year? I'm super keen to hear what you're taking from the literature, learning from your own experience and recommending to other mid-50's women who are pursuing a long super-strong healthy life! #healthspan

    • @DrMindyPelz
      @DrMindyPelz  7 месяцев назад

Yes, I have been experimenting with protein after my workouts (30 grams).
There are different variations of protein intake- you choose which one works best for your goals. Science has changed since I wrote my book (FLAG). I still say that 50-75gm protein is best for weight loss while you're learning to become metabolically flexible. Once you accomplish that, then you can move on to adding protein = adding muscle (if that's your goal). It's really individual, because while a man could eat 100gm of protein in a steak in one sitting and a man’s body can use all of that protein. A 55 year old menopausal woman may not utilize all that protein and the excess protein may be added to her fat storage or in her fat cells. 💙

Since I have started my weight loss journey, I have incorporated most of your practices with great success. I joined a gym this January and have increased my health journey. A little underground secret I learned at the gym is these strength and body builders are all taking Mounjaro to take advantage of a hack nobody talks about. Mounjaro will increase your insulin when your blood sugar goes up to lower it. Well, what else’s increases your blood sugar besides carbs/food. Strenuous weight lifting. This increasing your insulin to counter it. This is giving them a growth like insulin effect with better muscle gains. They measure themselves with scans and prove the results. Maybe Ozempic doesn’t work with muscle growth. But Mounjaro with strength training they are getting results.

@@betsyc6055not going to do it or promote it. The point was, these drugs are being used to gain muscle(lean) by fitness enthusiasts and body builders. That they are helpful in building muscle, they get demonized that you lose muscle mass with them. I know several people who started out with them because of diabetes, changed their lifestyle around and were building some muscle and eventually put diabetes in remission and have come off these drugs. I think they have a purpose but with strong coaching and lifestyle training changes, they can be successful. It’s the doctors just writing scrips and not doing the interventions needed. But I also blame every doctor who stands by and lets the government with its 3 letter agencies allow the food industry in partnership with big pharma destroy mankind.

Whatever cardio was my “drug of choice” and it just stopped. Just so infiltrating. I recently started swimming again first thing in the morning on a masters swim team. I just get up and go in the morning without any time to find another excuse. It’s been great but I’m still fighting the battle on days I don’t swim. I tried semaglutide, and even at fairly low doses, I did lose weight (13 lb in 3-1/2 months). And I probably lost less muscle than many because I was working out with weights twice a week with a trainer. He said I wasn’t having trouble lifting the same weights, so I couldn’t have lost too much muscle.
But the more I increased the dose (from 5 to 20 units), the more digestive problems and weird side effects including rashes and shooting headaches, I had and the crappier and weaker I felt.
After I got off it, because I needed to feel stronger to sing an upcoming concert, I went a little crazy eating Mexican ( with beer or sangria), and eating out in other restaurants (steak or burger with potatoes and the bun), and having dessert every day. I just wanted to feel “normal” again. Because I didn’t feel normal on semaglutide.
In September my bloodwork was bad, and it took me awhile to realize that I needed to go for a big change. So in October I decided to go with an animal based woe. I love my raw milk and kefir, plus regular heavy cream and butter, occasionally a bit of cheese. If I had to give that up to lose weight, then I will never lose weight. If I had to prepare and eat green veg and salads all the time to lose weight, I will never lose weight. If it meant giving up my minimal amounts of fruit…the same. I did a strict enough carnivore version for a couple of months, to understand that strict carnivore is not my schtick.
Fast forward to flirting with intermittent fasting. Great idea, but really hard to schedule around my time at the health club, and my singing lessons. And when I did manage it once or twice a week, it didn’t really make a dent. The only times I’ve tried a little longer, I was really hungry and headachy and felt like PMS (I’m 73). I think if I could manage to eat 2MAD at 12:00 and 5:00 or 6:00, but it doesn’t work with my schedule, which is the most convenient thing for me. I can’t possibly go with OMAD-I just can’t eat that much at one meal, especially while trying to build more muscle. I would lose very slowly just with diet and exercise, but I’d prefer to lose 30 lb of fat in the next couple of years, not the next couple of decades! Argggg!
I suppose I’m going to have to buy the book. Maybe one of the fasting plans will work for me. I’m a little down-hearted at this point. You’re so upbeat and enthusiastic, Dr. Mindy. And I-well, I got “Ozempic face”- thinner and older-looking. My beautiful round cheeks are all gone! Not happy in Illinois.

But realistically, if you fast a lot - you're still just reducing calories overall. It's hard to account for the weight loss as anything other than calorie restriction.

I have seen studies that show fasting reduces more fat and less lean body mass (muscles) compared with simple calorie restriction. This was two groups eating the same total calories over a week. And as Dr Mindy mentioned, fasting leaves you in an increased level of ketosis and increases the body's ability to easily burn fat for energy.

Not true at all. I am basically eating the same amount of food but since I added fasting I’m back in my premenopausal clothes. When I eat, I eat a lot!!

Hi Though I have PCOS, all dairy products, milk, yogurt, whey protein powder seem to suit my body completely and I have no issues with them so can I continue to keep dairy in my daily diet?

Yes, it's normal to feel that way after a 36-hour fast, especially depending on what you eat to break it.

I keep hearing about Nutrasweet but really is it being used that much anymore? I see stevia, monk fruit, etc. now. You never mention them it seems. You always mention Nutrasweet. Any difference?

Keyword search my RUclips channel- this is my passion project. I created teaching videos to support you! Fasting and variation is beneficial- you don't want to do the same fasting (OMAD) for over a year. Here's a video on "OMAD" to learn more: 💙

Do you have any good alternatives to diet soda? I get really bored with just water all the time and will give in to diet soda craving which I just learned is really working against me. Thanks!
