I've still got an XZ since release, and I can confirm that the plastic colouring has not faded or deteriorated. The finger-print scanner is also still functional. It's survived more unplanned drop tests than you can shake a stick at, including hitting stone, gravel, marble and concrete. And all it got was some small dents on the corners. No cracks or scratches on the display. I've grown to deeply respect the durability of this phone. And I don't even use a protective cover.
"...the beautiful and incredibly useful headphone jack..." lol Priceless :) BTW Zach...love your references to Bob Ross. Actually, I find your voice similarly soothing - honestly. Keep on with one of the best channels around! cheers
I doubt anyone will read this or be watching a video for a 6 year old phone. I just wanted to say the phone is still working great to this day. No discoloration on the plastic, fingerprint scanner still works, grills for the speaker and mic still intact. Great phone all round even after losing the phone while working on my house and being exposed to outside elements for two weeks it worked straight away after charging the phone.
Bit late but wow, I remember buying it refurbished in 2015, used 2 years to 2017. Battery was a struggle, charging was painfully slow, overheating when using the cameras or recording videos then the phone becoming laggy. After 2 years, I eventually moved onto the OnePlus 7 pro and now the magic 5 pro.
@@VfxRaptAnime same thing happened to my phone I replaced the battery after 3 years. Brand new again. People don't realise that replacing the battery makes it new again performance wise.
Thanks for the video. I just ordered two of these this morning, new in the box for $125 each. Today is Dec 7th 2019!! I am upgrading from my workhorse, rooted xperia XA that has been handling my main line and my household internet and tv for over 1000 gigs a month for almost 2 years.
@RandomUser221 he obviously isn't comparing the price you idiot. he is comparing the durability. btw. the nokia 3310 was half the price because it was a simple phone. this is a highend smartphone. the functionality is much bigger. another reason why you're an idiot.
Just as the rubber corner bumps on the Z3 metal frame have been shown to absorb impacts from drops better, the rubber/plastic compound frame may be for that purpose, as well as allow for signal transmission. Scratching it only reveals the materials, not its purpose. Just as by scratch test may "demonstrate" the back and frame of S7 to be "hard", but a drop has resulted in cracked back. So viewers should keep this in mind. Durability is NOT just about scratches from keys and coins (which the XZ has no problems). Durability tests should include drop tests from various heights at different angles to different surfaces. Also submersion tests as well. Sony Xperia design - not flashy. Just works.
For the price you're paying, they should figure out a way to lower pricing for the amount of plastic they used. There are a lot of cheaper phones now with full metal enclosures and Sony can do better
Caleb Kan That's not a whole lot of plastic. Clearly you've not used an XZ. It's every bit as premium feel as the other flagships with better video stabilisation than the rest. Over here it's about the same price as the S7 but the XZ has 64Gb vs 32Gb for the S7.
Hock Sing Ng I've spent time with an XZ yesterday quite a bit, so I know the feeling. However, I was not aware of the amount of plastic they used on the sides, until now. Yes, the device feels premium but for the amount you're paying they should find out a way to lower their prices. I have seen plenty of videos of Microsoft phones with their plastic build being bend tested but I have not seen tearing on the sides like the XZ, which is weird as plastic is usually quite resistant to that. At the very least the plastic should be thick enough to resist tearing
Caleb Kan Really for the small amount of materials, it's not the main costs of the phone. Like I've said, the design is there for a purpose. That's all I have to say. The design feels good, looks good, and is practical against light drops vs the so called premium glass and metal of others. Also, the tests are absurd. For durability they should be looking at other tests like drop tests. Some bending like what the phones will experience in a tight back pocket is reasonable. Bending like he did is useless. It's just senseless abuse for everyday use phone.
Hock Sing Ng If the S7 can survive a bend test through this extreme testing scenario, then that level of standard could be achieved by others if they design a phone well enough. It's a re-assuring thing at the very least.
My old Xperia XZ survived the ultimate bend test today. Spin dryer for 15 minutes. Main frame was bent and the lower glass peeled off. Turned it on and still fully functional.
I'm using the XZ but even after watching this video, i don't feel bad about the plastic edges. if used normally, it should stand the test of time. it actually feels solid enough
I have low hopes for that crack in the middle. It seems like something that will be done easily if phone is in the pocket the wrong way at the wrong time and something that will get worse with more wear. Thanks for the overview!
Thank you! Recently, I switched from strong manufacturer's cell phone and smartphone to XPERIA's XZ and XZPremium, but the strength which I was concerned was solved!

@@potato_x69 what do you mean? My sharp Aquos xx3 has sd820 without copper heat pipe and it still managed any heat from heavy game. And also, it's goddamn early 2017 you would never seen all of those flagship using copper heat pipe though. And z5 premium is actually throttle much than xz even with heat pipes.
Sean McGeeney Agree. Even Z5 has less plastic, only the camera lens and the flap which contains sim card and SD card. Oh yeah and the shock reducing corners.
I think it's sad that Sony didn't invest more in the 'sturdiness' of this phones though considering its price. Can't wait to see the XZ Premium's durability test. Great vid.
Actually if you consider that the side rail are made from plastic, this is a very good result tho. The plastic did not snap as badly as the metal rail from Huawei p9 and although it have the disadvantage of not having a strong rail, it is still bend-prof then the Iphone 6.

Hi Jerry, thank you for expensive experiment which is highly useful for me. I am a long-time Sony fan, and love to see more Xperia durabilities test, much resent Xperia phones. Big fan, thanks.
I've had mine for 9 months now and it's still without a scratch. No screen or armour and I use it for everything! I am careless with just chuckin it in my bag without considering the other contents, it's fell out of the claw in my car a few times while I've used maps, I've dropped it about 4 times on laminate. I used to be a huge Samsung fan until they made weaker ones after the S2. I had the S1, 2, 3, 4, 5, skipped 6 and went straight to S7 edge. All of which, after s2, either cracked, got screen burn, camera shattered or just plain shut down and ALL had protective 9h screens and cases. XZ IS by far the most durable phone I've owned.
Dude, I just love your channel!! Great work! I have a Sony Z3+... damn fragile... My brother had Xperia, a few... falling from pocket and whole screen is gone.
so the only "problem" here is the use of a plastic frame instead of a metal one. i don't get the hate. it's screen scratches at level 5, just like every other phone, it's camera lens didn't scratch at all, the display recovers from the burn test within seconds like it's nothing. only the bent test was a little problematic as it causes some cracks in the plastic frames but the overall functionality of the phone was not affected.
At 3:44 you said the fingerprint scanner is not available in the U.S. This is correct to a point. If you flash the phone with the European ROM the fingerprint scanner will work.
Then you should head to the next Apple store and buy your beautiful metal iCrap. Isn't that what you want? "Design"? 🐑🐑🐑 I will keep my plastic phones, with great internals and specifications, because I'm not a dumb sheep and I know what actually matter in electronics and specially, in computers.
Brenda princesa Lindaa That's bullshit. You don't have to buy an iphone to get good quality. My midrange samsung phone (a5 2016) has almost no plastic. The front and back are made of glass and aluminum. A phone doesn't need to be expensive to be made of good materials. And the xperia xz is expensive, but sony used materials I would expect in budget phones.
Luuk_the_badass nevermind that dipshit, this is a midrange phone, if you like the design and want it metal and glass then go for the flagship, the XZ premium, or better yet, wait for the XZ PRO in a month or 2 which is going to be epic according to the leeks, it should be announced this month
Brenda princesa Lindaa hey man, take it easy, you are giving a bad view towards Sony fans, this was clearly a midrange phone, so stop attacking Apple like an ignorant fan boy please, cause truth be told, they are one hell of a company
the ONLY headphone/stereo company I trust is Sony. My headphones have lasted me about a year and a half. Yes, they came with a paper case to put them in, and it looks like somebody sat on it now. But they still work meaning I’m still happy
Well, any sort of reasonable metal and plastic will get scratched no matter how well they are made, that's why they should make phones from extremely hard materials that can basically only be scratched with diamond. It's not a surprise that using a carpet knife on plastic or metal makes it scratch, that blade is made for that purpose and it also can cut a human finger (bone included) in half, however if you bend it a bit too much, it breaks in half, it's basically harder metal than anything found on a car for example. I am quite sure he could do that level of damage to any phone with a carpet knife but not manage to bend them all to crack like that, that bending thing is the only actual issue i could call an issue, if the plastic parts would be replaced with metal it'd fix that problem. I've got a Z3 Compact myself, yes it's plastic version of Z3 but it's been in casual use for two years and it's still scratchless and undamaged, though so were both of my iPhones before the Z3 and those both had to say hello to mother earth from around 2 meters height, other to concrete, other to gravel, still neither was scratched, the iPhone 4 that i owned had only one scratch on the top right corner of the metal surrounding when i changed it to the iPhone 5 which only had a bit of it's paint lost from wear & tear. Before i get called an Apple fanboy, yes i had an iPhone, the problem of the time when i got the iPhone 4 was the fact there was no proper opposition from Android and when i changed it to iPhone 5, the reason i got the iPhone 5 was the fact HTC Butterfly was not available here, reason for Z3 Compact was the fact i wanted an Android but not a Samsung. No matter how well you handle your phone, one day it will fall on the ground, i got Panzerglass on my Z3 because both, back and front of the phone are glass by basics. Doesn't cost that much and those come for all phones you can find, if this Sony ZX, as i said before, would be metal (most likely Aluminum) it could be a good phone, or if you throw a durable case & panzerglass on it it'll be as durable as any other phone that you throw those two on. If you buy a flagship device you should also buy screen protector and maybe a case, no matter what device it is, you wouldn't buy a full-scale $5000 PC and then throw in a shitty non-branded chinese PSU would you? Also the look is caused by the fact Sony wants their phones to look timeless, though Samsung Galaxys and Notes have looked exactly same for years now. Samsung reminds me, at least the ZX doesn't torch itself, that's a positive thing i guess.
IamNOTyourFather How is it cheap? Do you actually take out blades and try to purposefully damage phones? Any phone will look cheap of damaged and so your point is null and void.
In Flames Exactly, a phone (smartphone in this case) is supposed to be, well, a phone. Your car gets crash tested so it can be sold on market but is the car made for crashing? in logical sense no but basically yes since it has to pass those tests but who would intentionally crash their car and most likely die while doing that? There are heavy duty phones if that's what people are looking for.
One of my favourite phones was the A3 2015. All metal design and gorilla glass 4 with a very nice OLED screen and they're cheap to pick up second hand, i got mine for £70
I'm watching this on my xperia xz at the moment. It was OK while it lasted overtime, it overheats badly mostly days now while using it. It overheats badly that the screen actually come off the phone frame body as the adhesive fatigued due to the heat.
i really don't care about the bend test tbh. i never have "bend" problems because im not a fat american (just kidding, it's true though). I really just want it to be scratch resistant to the max meaning plastic sucks ass if you want that. Also since having a Samsung Galaxy S7 i really don't wanna go back to none-water resistant phones.

Oh dear I was going to buy this and I came across this video, wow just wow, thanks Jerry ya saved my money really appreciate it :)
so the only "problem" here is the use of a plastic frame instead of a metal one. i don't get the hate. it's screen scratches at level 5, just like every other phone, it's camera lens didn't scratch at all, the display recovers from the burn test within seconds like it's nothing. only the bent test was a little problematic as it causes some cracks in the plastic frames but the overall functionality of the phone was not affected.
I like how the vid was only around 5:00 minutes honestly
Hey maybe you could add a water test next time.
Nice job and, excellent phone to resist this kind of efforts!
At 3:44 you said the fingerprint scanner is not available in the U.S. This is correct to a point. If you flash the phone with the European ROM the fingerprint scanner will work.
Zenfone 3!!!
I am Brazilian, and we talk a lot in here, so I suggested he
yes please do a zenfone 3 next T_T
here I am, too poor and can only dream of buying an XZ, and you f_ck it up in a matter of seconds right after unboxing it.
Time to get a job then!
He does it so you don't have to do it accidentally.
Muhammad Risvan Lol man! 😂
hey jerry can you do xperia xz premium bend test?
he did :)
2016....2020= 4 yrs.
But im still intresting to buy one.
I thought my Z5 was beautiful, but man!! The XZ is absolutely stunning!
Damn I'm kinda upset about all the plastic, I really liked the look of this phone
Then you should head to the next Apple store and buy your beautiful metal iCrap. Isn't that what you want? "Design"? 🐑🐑🐑
I will keep my plastic phones, with great internals and specifications, because I'm not a dumb sheep and I know what actually matter in electronics and specially, in computers.
Watching at 5:38am from India
Good morning!

haha the rectangle part was funny. i actually went back twice to hear it
Was painful to saw it, but is very good to know the limit of resistance of this phone.
Louis Rossman said you can press 325# so you can bend anything
+Kristyanna Virgona N1DHD/6 365, but who's keeping track.

the ONLY headphone/stereo company I trust is Sony. My headphones have lasted me about a year and a half. Yes, they came with a paper case to put them in, and it looks like somebody sat on it now. But they still work meaning I’m still happy
thnks jerry for your test!!..it really help me ..

@@Killer_Kris7 crap.
It looks so old and cheap. OMG. in 2016? that? really sony???
IamNOTyourFather
How is it cheap?
Do you actually take out blades and try to purposefully damage phones? Any phone will look cheap of damaged and so your point is null and void.
In Flames Exactly, a phone (smartphone in this case) is supposed to be, well, a phone.
Your car gets crash tested so it can be sold on market but is the car made for crashing? in logical sense no but basically yes since it has to pass those tests but who would intentionally crash their car and most likely die while doing that?
There are heavy duty phones if that's what people are looking for.
It's Time To Stop Actually your car can drop accidentally, however cars are not meant to fit your pocket or fly.
So what you are saying is that in your case your car cannot do things without you but your phone can? what sort of dark magic is in your phone then.
Using this beast in 2019 and its the best phone I've had
I love this phone!
Love the joke about "those are the ppl who dont recognize that any other phone is also rectangle" THANK YOU
To much plastic for a premium phone.
you destroyed the phone
It was an accident, I swear.
JerryRigEverything please do durability test for xperia x
Mido Shora no Jerry Jerlock

That’s the point of his channel
You can add a body to the crazy hair
And then
You got donald trump
One of my favourite phones was the A3 2015. All metal design and gorilla glass 4 with a very nice OLED screen and they're cheap to pick up second hand, i got mine for £70
When he mentions that he wonders if Sony watch his vids, it reminded me of the Portal game :-) 2:48
I would like you to test a liquid screen protector, the are supposed to protect from scratches, to be stronger, bla bla bla...
please do a XZ premium
Why don't you try Lenovo k6 power a budget flagship device by Lenovo
I hope EVERY OEM watches your videos.
This is 2020 and i'm watching this vid with my Xperia XZ
Radityo I am here because I am about to get it, what do you think?
Its still relevant for buying this phone for compact camera phone? I was thinking to buy this phone
I'm watching this on my xperia xz at the moment. It was OK while it lasted overtime, it overheats badly mostly days now while using it.
It overheats badly that the screen actually come off the phone frame body as the adhesive fatigued due to the heat.
0:21 what the fuck so many phones
GIMMEEEEEEEEEEE
George Christopoulos give me a s7 edge
it looks really nice, too bad it's made of so much plastic. i don't care if it's 50% heavier if it's 50%+ more durable.
For so much plastic, it looks pretty durable in this video. It passed the bend test like the IPhone SE.
i really don't care about the bend test tbh. i never have "bend" problems because im not a fat american (just kidding, it's true though). I really just want it to be scratch resistant to the max meaning plastic sucks ass if you want that. Also since having a Samsung Galaxy S7 i really don't wanna go back to none-water resistant phones.
Use many plastic body and yet still expensive..
Love your rectangle joke and your humour in general :)
I love your neature walk reference at 2:07
