Ed McMahon was a carrier-qualified fighter pilot and instructor and a combat forward air controller in Korea whose job was to fly around in a small plane and get the enemy to shoot at him so that the fighters could attack the gun emplacement. He was more than just Carson’s sidekick.
I mean... being the "sidekick" on maybe the most beloved show in television history is not something to scoff at. Not sure where it became some kind of negative thing. Ed was amazing at his job and a huge part of that franchise's success.
Some people may think that being a side kick is not that important or hard to do. There is more to it than you think. Ed was part of the Tonight Show's success.
