I believe this film is a one of the great drama’s ever made. It is so subtle in its quiet soulful ways that it has an impact that is very, very moving. As the years go by this film will stand higher & higher. Anyone associated with The Dig must be so proud. I started watching & stopped after a few minutes as I realized it was special. I knew that it should be shared with my wife so I waited till we could enjoy it together. I really don’t care how it’s received, or critiqued, because, I enjoyed it so much.

I agree. I thought it was outstanding in every respect from script to performances, cinematography to music. An instant classic.

This was exactly my response too. I got a notification from Netflix that it was up and started watching it straightaway because I'd been waiting for it; but after a few minutes I realised how very special this film is. It left me dazed and amazed.
The performances are flawless, even if I agree it was unnecessary to make Edith Pretty 23 years younger than Basil Brown. And yes, I would have preferred some more actual archaeology too. But the film manages to tell the story and to construct images in such a way that you feel what May Basil says: It's not about the past or the present but about the future. - Or as T.S. Eliot said: Time past and time present are both contained in time future.

The first time Basil and Mrs Pretty walk out to the mounds, you can feel that Basil already knows something special is there.
At the same time , he is unsure of her motivation.
Is she just a rich widow with time and money on her hands?
Then she speaks with such quiet eloquence and passion about "digging" since she was "old enough to hold a trowel."
Basil looks away from the mound to Pretty. absorbing her words. At that moment, he knows they are kindred spirits and the excavation will be revealing more than the mound's contents. He says "the past, it speaks to you, doesn't it?"
From that moment their purpose is conjoined.

It's well made but was disappointed overall, the archeology took 2nd place to several concocted made-up personal dramas, several major finds we're excluded and those that we're included barley got any explanation, they could easily have made enough drama out those.
Basil Brown worked closely in partnership with the Ipswich Museum on the dig and yet the film choose to show this as an ongoing conflict.

Yet how many people will now know about this incredible discovery, how many people will appreciate how this find changed the previously held views of the Anglo Saxon period. Yes there was some dramatization but the integrity of the core of the film and the characters portrayed are genuine. For those viewers whose interest in discovering more is piqued by the movie they will learn of the details you mention and more.

The interview with the major players was spoilt by Carey playing with her hair and swearing; Ralph appeared to confuse astrology with archaeology.
