    I really enjoyed Minecraft: Story Mode, honestly and didn't realize how much hate it got. I didn't come in expecting anything and didn't care if Steve was in it or not. I figured they had to make up everything because Minecraft had no story. I played it and had my fun. It was a perfectly fine/10 little story. I enjoyed the characters and plot which were both one dimensional but I thought they were colorful and enjoyable to watch. I liked some of the twists and turns and the minecraft logic in the world like that flying machine or Ruben popping into a porkchop. It was cool they kept that on the wall in season two. I also really enjoyed them hopping to and from all those crazy worlds in season two. Yeah, the "crafting" in the game was basically pointless and the quicktime events that make up the gameplay are still barebones but not everything has to be a Godfather level drama to be enjoyable. Sometimes seeing some colorful people do fun stuff in a colorful environment with the occasional twist is enough. In the end, I had a lot of fun and that was more than enough for me.

      This video isn't a personal critique, but rather a compendium of aspects that led to it being less than ideal in the eyes of the gamer. I personally enjoyed the game as well, and think the humor and jumpy (albeit interesting) worldbuilding can create an atmosphere that makes up for subpar writing. And I also must admit, season two had much better writing and the choices were more impactful. There also were better minigames, so most stuff I discussed only applied generally to season one. But hey, you aren't really going to play season two of an episodic game without playing the first one, so that makes sense to focus on. I actually really like storymode personally, but I noticed how much hate it got. Really my main gripe is how poorly some of the characterization is in certain characters, but besides that and the stuff I mentioned in the video, I don't hate it

    I think it was a good idea for minecraft story mode to not use steve, as it showed the creative nature of minecraft, and the ability to create your own character, while this wasnt done completely in story mode, you did get to choose your Jesse.

    • @TheLemonMasterYT
      @TheLemonMasterYT  2 года назад +63

      Agreed. However, if they are going to make it a seperate story from the story of minecraft, like another commentor said you could make the name something like "Minecraft: Order of the Stone"

    I see that someone on reddit back then said that the name is bad, because it sounds like a game mode rather than a spinoff. And honestly, there is another layer to it. It makes it sound like it is THE story of minecraft, instead of just a random story in the MC-multiverse. They could have just called it Minecraft: Order of the Stone, since that is an actual thing the spinoff is partially about.

    • @TheLemonMasterYT
      @TheLemonMasterYT  2 года назад +166

      I agree! Funnily enough "Minecraft: Order of The Stone" was actually a proposed name for the full game of Minecraft back in like 2009. I guess that's where they got the name!

      @@TheLemonMasterYT Stuff like that, in fact, is why I love MCSM. It has so much charm and soul and while it's not perfect there's no denying that the people working on the game loved Minecraft and wanted to make something cool about it. The reason why I'm really bummed out that Minecraft: Story Mode is no longer available is because it had some genuinely great antagonists and stories. The Wither Storm, the White Pumpkin, the Admin, I loved them because they all felt so unique yet staying true to the charm of Minecraft. A lot of people were angry that it removed the creative elements to make a story game but I didn't care that much because it gave in return endearing characters to relate to, cool enemies to defeat, wacky worlds to explore and genuinely emotional scenes that somehow made me cry over a fictional pig in a children's block game. And looking back on it, yeah, some dialogue was clunky, animations weren't the best and the gameplay sections could've used some polish but I enjoyed every second of it.
    Am I blinded by nostalgia, absolutely, but I used to, and sort of still do, love this game.

    I totally stand by their choice of not making the game centered around Steve
    Like, why should they be defining the Minecraft lore when Mojang themselves isn't doing it?
    And I agree with what you said about the player writing their own story
    Which is why the protagonist being some random new character called Jesse does sound weird at first, until you look at them as another hero of this vast blocky world
    The only thing that doesn't actually make sense from the "Minecraft" point of view is that there are complete civilizations and everything in the game. But then again, making the game about a character who is completely alone in the world wouldn't have gotten Telltale very far in terms of story 😂

    • @miimiiandco
      @miimiiandco 2 года назад +6

      Minecraft: The Island does a better job with the whole Minecraft survival thing, while Story Mode feels like a story that takes place in the Minecraft World - or rather, a Minecraft server. The game uses Minecraft as a backdrop to a greater story, one that revolves around characters, rather than the world around them.

    when the game came out I was like 9 years old and absolutelly loved the game, it was a story completely unrelated to minecraft when you think about the game logic and lore, it felt like one of those youtube series but one that you were (kinda) the main character, I loved the characters and even cried with reubens death lol. I was a big fan until early 2019 when moved on (accepting that we weren't going to get a new season). Some weeks ago I saw a tiktok about it that brought back my memories and I found out that the game had a fandom LMAO in my defense I didn't use to use much internet back then and really thought only me and my friends played it. The sad point is that most content I oculd find was people roasting the game, I was like "I don't remember being that bad" it was one of my favorite games, but I decided to replay now that I'm older to see if it was real criticism and man I STILL LOVE THIS GAME I'm at the moment hyped over it again, and I'm not gonna lie, It's really not the best game and it had potential to be way better, but it is still not a bad game, it can be really fun and at least for me. You can get affectionated to the characters (I wish we would have seen more of olivia and axel) and the story can get emotional at certain times. This game will forever have a special place in my heart (a curiosity is that my releationship with one of my best friends now is the result of a random kid I met that had the game and let me borrow it) nostalgia hits hard. This is honestly really sad. I loved Minecraft Story Mode, I mean to be fair it isn’t the Narrative Masterpiece I remember it being but I still love it. The fact it got so much hate baffles me because I’ve always loved Minecraft when a story is implemented into it. We all grew up watching the Fallen Kingdom series and always wanted to play Minecraft that way, plus Minecraft is a sandbox game, OF COURSE YOUR GOING TO MAKE YOUR OWN STORIES WHILE PLAYING IT!!!
    I will always love this game and it’s story and I do still really miss it.
    It’s a shame what happened to it, maybe if they wanted to make it like an anthology series with more stories than just with Jesse and The Order of The Stone. I mentioned Fallen Kingdom, that could be awesome to play through that story.
    It certainly isn’t the best game in the world like you said but yeah, I will always love the game despite it not being the narrative masterpiece I remember it being as I said earlier.

    My experience with Minecraft: Story Mode has been strange. I found out about it when I was very young, and I wanted it really badly so I asked my mom if I could get it on my Wii U. Funnily enough we accidently ended up buying Minecraft Wii U Edition instead of Story Mode, but it was really a blessing in disguise since I made a lot of friends and had so much fun playing that as well. Eventually we did end up getting Minecraft: Story Mode, and I loved it very much. What I didn't love, however, was when Episodes 1-5 got released, and then they made a completely different version of the game called "The Complete Adventure" and never added the last three episodes to the original version of the game. I did end up playing the rest of the episodes and then Season 2 a few months ago, and I'm really glad I did.
    I wanted to say one thing about the video, at 8:50 when you were talking about the music, composers rarely ever own the music, because they just get paid to make it and then the company owns it. The only example I can think where this isn't the case is ironically the Minecraft soundtrack, but I believe this was just because it was cheaper for Notch to license the music from C418 than to pay him for the music, so C418 is really the owner. So essentially it would make less sense if Antimo & Welles did own the music, unless they tried to buy the rights from Telltale (or actually, I think Mojang is who owns it since they lost the license for the game) after the game was done.

    definitely absolutely loved this game and I'm happy to see many people still care about it.
    I remember i used to get super excited for the new episodes to drop, getting that excited stomach feeling and eventually being overjoyed when they finally came out. I enjoyed alot of the characters, my favorite being Ivor i loved his character development alot from being the temporally main antagonist from the beginning who almost killed everyone by making the whither storm to slowly becoming more goofy grumpy and enthusiastic about everything,he still was acting pretty grumpy but as time went on he got just more goofy and open while keeping his crazy grumpy old man vibe, it all fit together and happened in a believable manner.
    For the writing and Story yeah it's not the most amazing thing ever but it's still nice and interesting and overall just a good story to keep my interest

    I remember watching videos on theories about future episodes and how Jesse and the gang were going to kill the Wither Storm.
    I’ve only got beat episode 6 of the post Wither Storm dlc and sadly never got round to trying season 2, even though I was still hyped for it.
    I guess that if I want to replay the original story, or finish episode 7 and try out episode 8 and season 2, I’ll have to try and find a copy.
    Shame the studio is down, they’d probably sell there past game, unlike a certain Japanese company I know.

    I lived through the whole thing. From the very first episode of season one til the upsetting downfall of tellatale i remember fighting with all those MCSM haters when tellatale got closed lmao.. you can say whatever you want about me but minecraft story mode changed my life.. for the best. I met new friends, I enjoyed their series, heck i even learnt how to draw actual humans and even learnt a thing or two about minecraft! I've been a minecraft fan ever since 2013 and minecraft story mode was a nice change of pace. It left a very huge impact on me.. it's true it's all over now but.. the memories aren't.. i remember playing this game back in 2016.. the first season just got finished and my brother got all of the episodes in one Xbox 360 disk! I was so excited to try it but i waited for all the episodes to drop so i can play all of them at once! It was an Amazing experience. I was only 16 at that time so it makes sense that i liked it. And even til now i don't really care about the animation or the game mechanics.. all what i care about is a good story.. i never noticed the bad sides of this game. I only enjoyed a good, clean and a friendly game that gave me lots of goosebumps back in the day. And even til now ;-; yeah call me a nerd im ready to hear it but minecraft story mode will always be in my heart..

    I would like to say (as someone who was around and played the game when it came out) that they realized they had to let off the hook about mature content and expanded on the concept of death A LOT in season two. Many characters dying, how the concept of death works in the minecraft world (you bury the inventory of the person who died) and how it affects a character's mental health, with Jack having literal PTSD, even the Admin had it for having killed his best friend. Season 3 would have been great.

    I used to play this game so much. When I beat season 1, I used to replay the game over and over again (before I learned about other Telltale games like GoTG and TWD) because of how much I enjoyed it. I was so happy when season 2 came out but I unfortunately only got to play the first two episodes before Telltale shut down. I loved Minecraft when I was younger and this was the first Telltale game I ever played. This game sparked an interest in "choose your own adventure" type games for me. Because of this, Minecraft: Story Mode will forever hold a special place in my heart. While not my favorite game of all time, it was definitely enjoyable and I am now just learning of how many people hated the game.

    Minecraft story mode ahh the memories. I remember I was in second grade when it came out and I watched stampy play it. I remember it was all my group of friends were talking about and I really wanted the game soo badly. I remember begging my parents to buy me the game and which later on they did and the game did not disappoint. I was in love with the game and it inspired me to create more things in minecraft. I never really got to play season 2 and by the time I did telltale was shut down, got to play episode one of season 2.
    Honestly never new it got hate, I didn't care about the lore not being a steve and I still don't (and I'm surprised minecraft dungeons didn't get the same hate for not having steve). My only complaint is how you had to pay for each episode and then they made a complete version with all the episodes (which I still have a copy of on my Wii U) other than that I'll have to play it again to see if it still has the same taste it left in my mouth.
    To me, minecraft story mode represents the golden age of minecraft, the times people didn't have to worry so much about stuff. It's unfortunate how most don't mention it anymore, not even mojang, it became what it's first few lines were "Nothing built can last forever and every legend no matter how great fades with time".

    My first concern with Minecraft Story Mode is that you could entirely remove the Minecraft's IP elements and the story still holds. I feel like Telltale diverged so far from the source material with the Wither Storm, they could had have created their own unique universe instead of trying to make it fit into the Minecraft one, yet here we are. I really feel like the game would have had much more positive feedback if it hadn't slapped the "Minecraft" IP on it.

  • @DylanTale_Edits
    @DylanTale_Edits 2 года назад +6

    Looking back at the game, I did notice a few animation glitches, but it's probably because of how quickly the episodes released. Other than that, I loved playing the game. Everything about it blew me away. The famous RUclipsrs that starred in it, the animation, the plot, the twists/turns, the characters themselves, and the freaking mechanics. Not only did they have all the usual bells and whistles of Minecraft, but they added blocks, items, and mechanics (3d models for potions, putting that command block in the famous t-shaped soul sand, etc.). Is everything about the game perfect? No, but neither is Minecraft if you think about it. Minecraft is imperfect and incomplete, hence the constant updates/additions that it receives. People, especially people on Reddit, need to consider all of this before criticizing Story Mode so heavily. I even think the wordplay on the title is creative. The title of Story Mode implies that it's Minecraft or a part of Minecraft, but in its own unique way. Was that not the game's intended purpose as a spinoff? And with it being a spinoff, it makes sense why they didn't just take the original characters/lore of Minecraft. A. That would've been the quick/cheap way out, B. Story Mode is a spinoff game, not part of the main game, and C. What they did come up with was insanely creative. Minecraft Dungeons doesn't have the original lore in its game at all. It has Steve in it, but not as the main character, yet look at how successful that game was. I never have and never will understand the hate behind Minecraft: Story Mode.

I cannot play the game anymore and I never played season 2 so it still haunts me to this time what season 2 could have felt like playing...
    If only something happened to play the game again I would be so happy. The thing about the magic of the game is not the fact that its unique, its because its a tale, its story and its overall feel a perfect game for someone of the age of 10, especially at the times when Minecraft barely had anything interesting and everyone just watched noob vs pro videos.
    Its not a masterpiece because it is a good game, it is one because it was released the right moment.

    The writing wasn’t the best but it had a lot of cool ideas.
    Personally, I liked it when I played it back when I was a wee little Wario but I think that was the point, it was targeted towards younger kids(I think?) and I think a lot of people forgot that part.
    I recently watched an old stream of a RUclipsr I liked playing it years ago and I noticed it has some odd tone shifts where it tries to be more edgy, like randomly he goes from saying stuff like “heck, crap, crud” and then just starts saying “what the hell, dam it” and then transitions back to saying the previous stuff with no real reason. Looked kinda stupid looking back on it but that goes back to the writing being kinda sloppy, so whatever.

    I still own this game on Xbox (both seasons). I think it's a great game, and had a good story with Cliff-hangers that made me always want more. Maybe I am biased, I did grow up with it, and I get the criticism now. The choices may not have done much, but the story still kept me coming back. I think that a unique story like this was a good idea, Steve being the "main character" and the Ender Dragon the "end boss" would be kinda lame. The Wither storm, maybe was dumb (I don't think it was, but not sure what people think about it), though it was unique, and unlike anything in real Minecraft. Maybe if I (or someone else) figures out how to mod the game, we can make our own stories, and make choices matter. The game has great building blocks, we just need to build it.

    I miss this game. I had so much fun playing it, and an even better time watching all the hilarious glitches other people have encountered. I still have Season 2 on my Xbox One at my aunt's, but now I can't play it at home anymore. It really sucks knowing that a game that you've loved since you were 6 get so much criticism, that the developers deleted the game entirely. Obviously, I always felt the animations were less-than-perfect, but that didn't define the game's overall quality for me. It was the story and the villains in the story. Also, Season 2 is much better than Season 1, because the visuals are much more pleasing, the stamina system while fighting is a nice touch, and there are more iconic characters such as Zara, Stella, Romeo, Jack, and... am I forgetting anyone? Oh right, Nurm and Luna. It also has better character development that Season 1 had. Sure, Ivor actually wanting to help end the thing he created is nice, but I like how Jack has changed as a character too. From someone grieving their friend that died by their mistake, and driven by his egotistical nature, to a character who decides that the past is the past and there are more things in the world than just him and the places he's been to. Minecraft Story Mode was a great game and for me, will *never* be forgotten.

It's not THE Minecraft story, but *a* Minecraft story. It feels like this sorta thing could have happened in a Minecraft server - kinda like 2B2T, with a couple gigantic liberties on the side...
    I think it's interesting to compare it to other Minecraft stories, such as Minecraft: The Island.

    Honestly i really miss this game
    I got the game for my birthday when i was around 6-7, I'm not sure how far i got but i know i didn't finish it because of my mom and former step dad separating, and me being a dumbass kid lost the game. I still wish i could've finished it

    A very well-made video! Nice editing! (I was laughing at all the Reddit and TheTopTens hate, especially 7:04 XD
    (Tbh I got on this video thinking it was gonna be hating on it, prepared for the worst, and let's just say I was very glad when I saw it wasn't.)

    Honestly the game was still pretty great. In my own opinion the story was pretty great. Designs and all. I liked Jesse as a character even 7 years ago. You can check out Kwote and other youtubers playing it before and you can see how they adapted to love the game. I'd kill to get the original dev team back on to make it better.
    Though Steve wouldn't really make a Lotta sense for Story Modes story. Just my opinion. But at the very least we got animators around making pretty great stories often revolving around Steve and such.

    I really liked the game, but at the same time, it came out when I was pretty young so nostalgia probably has something to do with it. And how somebody else mentioned, it makes it sound like it's THE story instead of A story. I do think they could have had something more connected, but at the same time that might have made it worse. I also have a lot of good memories because me and my siblings replayed it recently when I was really depressed and the nostalgic thrill helped me gauge my feelings and made me realize how deep I really was into depression, if nostalgia is the only thing I can feel. Overall, I don't get why people are complaining about it, it doesn't mess with minecraft lore, but I can see where they're coming from.

    Story mode one was pretty boring at the beginning, but became rly good soon. And episode 2 is just rly good! I used to play both of them, while I was in the hospital, and I got some decent fun memories. One month ago, I tried to complete it again, aaand... It's still great!

    I loved this game so much as a kid, I got the game back in the Xbox 360 days, oblivious of how bad this game was. I actually bought The Complete Adventure for Xbox One at a thrift store so I could relive and finally finish the game as I never did due to young me accidentally deleting the game on Xbox 360. I finished the game in a few days over some glass bottled Coca-Cola and some Oreo Ice cream sandwiches, reliving the glory days
