My trip to the northeastern Indian states of Assam and Meghalaya in March of 2019 was one I will remember for the rest of my life. This area is as rich in vibrant, mouthwatering flavors as it is in history and culture. Combine that with the friendly locals and beautiful landscapes and you’ve got a pristine paradise fit for any curious traveler! Come along with me as I explore Assam and Meghalaya!
My third day in Meghalaya closed out with an insanely spicy feast filled with food from the nearby state of Nagaland! I couldn’t wait to try more fiery foods from northeast India!
Naga food contains lots of bamboo shoots and ghost peppers. Northeast India is extremely diverse when it comes to cuisine. Each state’s food, culture, and people are different from the last.
Paul took me to a local restaurant called Naga Mandarin for our Naga feast. While climbing the stairs inside the building to get to the restaurant, I ran into an amazing fan! Once inside the restaurant, I met two guys from Nagaland and admired the photos on the wall, which showed tribespeople from the state. There was also a small gift shop of items from Nagaland!
The menu was made of bamboo. We got the Mini Naga meal, which consisted of pork, rice, dried bamboo shoots, pulled veg, soup, two chutneys, and smoked fish curry.
I dove into the pork and bamboo shoot curry, which was really potent and hot. The pork was tender and fatty and had a smoky flavor. It was so different from anything I’d ever had. It was so nice with the red rice!
Then I went with one of the chutneys, which contained tons of seeds from the peppers it was made from. It was made with king peppers and hit really hard, so I tried to cleanse my palate with some mashed potatoes, but they were spicy, too! The potatoes contained chilies, onions, and lots of herbs. With the chutney, the potatoes were amazing!
Next was the soup with rice. The soup had a very Chinese flavor profile and reminded me of miso soup. It’s made with fermented soybeans.
Then I tried the fish chutney, which contained lots of chili seeds as well. It had lots of fish flavor but wasn’t too salty like the other fish chutneys I’d tried in northeast India so far. It was hot, though!
I went with the smoked fish curry next. The fish was really good but contained lots of bones. It had a really nice, smoky flavor. It didn’t blow me away but was good. The curry was more like a thick, peppery soup.
Next was the smoked beef chutney. It was super colorful and contained lots of chilies. It was really hot! I mixed it with the rice, which helped calm down the heat. I went with a cucumber afterward to cool down some more. While I cooled my mouth down, it was Paul’s turn to try!
The ghost pepper in the chutney was intense! It was so hot, it had my nose running! Paul handled the dishes with no problem! I went with some mouth fresheners to calm down the heat because I was still dying from the chilies! Our meal came to 590 rupees, or roughly $8.36 U.S.
The Naga food was really good, especially the beef, but it was a little too hot for me!
I hope you enjoyed coming with me to try Naga food for the first time! If you did, please give the video a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food content!

Love ur videos bro👍👍✌️✌️
Davidsbeenhere you should'nt miss the food from ri bhoi area of meghalaya.. it's well known for its traditional way of cooking
Awesome videos! I would like to mention one thing here, Christianity has nothing to do with the food habits of North East Indians, they have this culture since ages and they converted to Christianity only in the last 10-50 years. Some of them still follow local tribal religions and follow the same food habits.
If you want to taste the real Naga food visit Nagaland....
David, that Naga dish spice was only half. You could have tried full spicy dishes with bro Paul. You need to try King chilly with pork & beef
The north east people are really friendly and really good hosts. My best friend is from tripura and he had taken me to one of north east friends gatherings. All assembled at a friends house every weekend cooked together and drank and had fun. For the first time i had the spicy beef chutney there and OMG i was blown away, it was delicious af. They have really spicy food. They were amazing hosts. Even though i was not from NE the amount of respect and hospitality they showed me. Amazing people
That's northeast.. different culture tribes foods .... Friendly in nature...
But bad for enemies... that's why pakistan fear northeast army regiments
Hi i am from Tripura where r u from
We North-Easterns are proud of our food and Culture. I am from Tripura. A Twiprabong ❤
ABSOLUTELY mouthwatering! Who would eat this?!?! 👍👍
Me! LOL
Pro Indian food tip : Mix everything with rice unless explicitly told not to
Exactly cut the spice with rice
NE guy who has both Aryan and Mongoloid genes he is not Bengali, he is Assamese.
David...that was hardcore. My girl is from Nagaland and I love their cuisine.
Tribe?😁
she brokeup
She's for the streets
I don't know how and why, but you're winning the hearts of North East bro.. would loved to have you in Nagaland.. Take Care wherever you are!
That meghalaya host is good..quite knowledgeable.
Yes I give shout out to him....👏👏👏
Way better than that randi guwahati guide
Your guide don't look like a Chinese, Meghalaya people look more of a Filipino, Indonesian and Malaysian rather than Chinese.. He also look like the kind of cool guy to hang around with.... Nice video and beautiful guide..
Most fat people i met are very cool to talk with. I may be wrong, but just my observation though.

When Paul says "I told you it really hit you hard" like the sound of that. Thanks to David and Paul for their incredible videos around Shillong.
If you are planning to visit Nagaland in December then be on first week of December to see the Hornbill Festival of Nagaland for culture shock... And eat all condiments as per your taste buds.. Not as a main dish
jack daniel worst festival
They eat dogs there !!!!!!!!! Worst festival
I hate dog eaters,, 😡😡

Glad to see your vlog again David, you seems to have a good time in Shillong. Paul is amazing...
David and Paul both of you are a good comedian. Oscar of the year goes to both of you. Congrats..
Beware 😎😎
Hello Kim
When are you attacking America
And the awards for best missile goes to u😂😂
David you really have made my week of all the video uploads of Meghalaya. I'm soo glad you had a good time here & had an awesome guide with you. 🙌🙌🙌
David. That's just the tip of the iceberg of Naga food. There are less spicy food too 😄
Really liked pork with bamboo shoot, will try it again
What David and Paul has done cannot be undone. "Lord have mercy on their rectum for they knows not what they are doing". But for the future reference, if anyone wants to try Naga chutney please know that it's an appetizer , just take little bit at the tip of your tongue that will make you feel more hungry and the main dish seem tastier. It should be taken like pickel (achar) of North India.
U met a gr8 frn to explore shillong unlike the one in assam
She was a doughe
What was wrong in Assam?
I pressed the like button, when i see the food, the moment it started coz i know it gonna be amazing....😋👌
even one lick can be spicy, and you take a spoonful of those chilli chutney....🤣🤣🤣 what a brave soul
Pussy
Wow Meghalaya had it all.
I am a Naga. I wish you get to try snail cooked in axone(fermented beans) along with dry pork.
Nice recipe .
Feels good to hear an Ao guy sharing about Snail dish 👍👍 , most of my Ao friends don't know the technique to eat (slurp/suck) snail without breaking all of its shell 🐚 😜 😝
@@khrieketouzometha8036 thanks brother. I am open minded when it comes to food except for one particular food xD .. He will love pork or small fish cooked in a bamboo over the charcoal.

I cringe at every video of you trying out THAT much chutney 😂

I hit the like button before even watching the video. Great video David.
There are Hindus in North east. And I am not talking about the Hindus from other parts of india that settle here, but a huge population of Assamese people are Hindu, I am one and even we eat pork and sometimes even though our parents don't eat beef, when young people go to college they try everything, be it beef or whatever.
bUt BuT hInDu AsSaMeSe ArE tHeMsElVeS mIgRaNtS...
Yea even my hostel roommate from Assamese Hindu use to eat beef and dog meat during college days😋😋😋😂😂😂
ato S dog meat!?? Are you fucking serious!?
@@Kookie-zc3gt some Nagas and Karbis eat dogs, i know its weired for you and me but its their food habit, can't judge.
I'm from Meghalaya and my Assamese friends eat beef.
Haha, nice thumbnail David!
You still missed out on "kuwai", the beetel nut along with beetel leaves served on your plate of mouth freshener. That's, what we most Meghalayans like to have after meals, after tea, savoury or anytime ....it keeps you warm and has an acquired taste. Also should have tried some local wine made with "soh-yong", it great.
And I reckon ghost chilli/Naga chilli is ranked 3rd hottest in the scoville scale after some Mexican followed by a Trinidad chilli.
Its kwai
And also it spells 'soh-iong'
That's actually Assamese.
Naga food is great and not all items are so chilli hot. You are not supposed to have chutney by the spoonful but mix it with rice and other items instead. Regarding fish bones - it's best to have these with your hands. Great uploads. Thanks.
I love naga food especially their fermented soy beans. I usually eat pork with rice. The rice makes it less fatty.
Paul is the Best!
loads of love to you both... :D
Paul seems to be a cool guide with good knowledge.
The food looked amazing, but not too sure about the chilli chutney!!! You both are very brave to have so much chilli 😱🌶 🙌
People think we eat Naga Chilly everyday, every meal, every food but I'm sorry that's completely not true. We like it but we hardly eat Naga Chilly. Maybe people outside put Naga Chilly in every dish thinking it would make it more Naga. We make Naga Chilly chutney but not in every meal. Just once in a while.
We don't eat chutney alone. We eat it with rice. When you were eating chutney without rice....I was like ...oh no that's not a good idea...😂😂 better carry Ice cubes when you poop
How true. Eating that much raja mirchi everyday would kill you!!!
Maybe you don't but most of us do. Everyday either dry or fresh. A naga meal is incomplete without Naga Chili chutney. Idk which breed of naga you belong to.
Your from ao tribe so I guess. Else we have King chili everyday as chutney wether dried or fresh depending on the season.
Ok I got my answer. Some do. Some don't.
We hardly eat naga chilly? Really? Where are you from girl???
1:04 did a khasi really say lait"mu"khrah. It's laitumkhrah
Lah ïa pah masi baroh
Ta Leh sngew jaboh man ....
shame
Yes, I always called it Lait-Um-Khrah .. not Lai- mu
How odd! Having been born in Shillong and been brought up there I always thought Laitumkhrah meant 'way to umkhrah(river)'.
A cheer for Paul.. amazing guide, cheers bro!!
David you don't eat chutney like that LOL! 😂😂😂😂 love from Nagaland
Everyone in meghalaya is watching ur vlog n talking about u David.n it's really nice to see u enjoy our place. Much Love from shillong
david plz be careful with spiciness.u may get sick again!i knw americans have delicate stomach!
Haha😂
True they have delicate stomach ,they don't eat chilly n hot or warm food
Hilarious 😅😅😅
Naga chilly can make any stomach delicate
Awesome, Awesome, awesome, now david also been there, Love ya way of bloggin raw. Man of real steel. After lockdown please visit darjeeling, india.
An ignorant south indian like me...just understood the meaning of *king pepper Naga chutney* ... I would love to try it...it looked delicious!! ....
*its Hottttt* ;)
It's one among the hottest chilly in the world
Nothing beats pork with bamboo shoot and dry pork with axone.if you wanna go for light meals try 'galho' (green local veg cooked with local rice and local pork innards meat) Finish it off with rice beer.
David seriously who eats chutney that way😂😂😂...i am dying seeing ur expression... But anyway visit Nagaland and try king chili
You are the first western who can eat lots of spicy food I have seen ever
OMG it's really really too spicy. Seems like pork pickle and beef pickle😊😊😊. Nagaland I love you.
I request my Naga brother and sisters to come in Delhi and open up a food joint. It will rock. 🇮🇳🙏
Bro the way u eat chutney is totally wrong 🤣
Actually I laughed so hard cuz I knew what was coming
What had me cracked up is when you drank a whole lotta soup from the bowl and paul was like "yup you can do that" 😂
Seriously wtf !!you shoudn't eat spoonful of chutney like that lol!!

Man you are eating full spoon chutneys without rice that's daring man seriously even I being tribal cannot dare to do that
Hatss off
True man...but chilli is a must for me
It's arguably the best cuisine in northeast India. But I do recommend mixing sidedishes with rice before eating it
Hey david plz do vist Manipur also...
So happy to see you eat all the authentic dishes.. Please visit Manipur too. You will experience a totally different cuisine unlike any part of India..
Never been so early! Amazing food!
Hey @david it’s not like we put king chilli 🌶 into every dish. If u come to Nagaland u can try the different dishes of each tribe. Hope u are planning to come in December as planned
Bamboo shoot has a strong amonia NH3 smell...... It's a aquired taste..... But I love it. Long live

Wow thank you for the wonderful video
I can imagine David spending the next 2 days in the washroom 🤣🤣
Actually ghost pepper is super hot only in your mouth. It does not upset your stomach or make uncomfortable poop. It's way safer for your stomach than the regular chilies that are not so hot to taste but harms your digestive system.
Paul I must say you are the best guide ever, since I have started watching David’s video😊 so cool👍🏻 OMG David how you eating that king chilli pickle. Being Indian and being raised in northeast I myself couldn’t eat king chilli😄 Good job guys😍
Bhat tho chutney, aru chutney tho bhat types tho! 🤣👍
This time video quality is really good

You got some badass quality here. Even us hardcore local eaters usually don’t put the hot chutney alone right away into mouth but mix with rice etc n eat. I bet you can even try with more hot chutney
Hehe most of the nagaland food, you hav already tasted it here in meghalaya 😂
You should try smoked pork + fermented bamboo shoots + fermented soyabean + yam. It will make you come back to Nagaland again.
Damn am just sweating looking at you how you ate those ghost pepper chatni naga food generally really hot even I can't eat like that damn your the man👍
Your show is the best the raw feel man !!! Come to goa !!
David you did a big mistake by eating the chutney that way... 😂😂😂 Never mind when you really visit Nagaland please remember not to do it... 😀👍
