Battle of the Basses

- The Phillip/Inquisitor duet remains popular because it offers up juicy opportunities for two basses to go head to head. Here's another.
Khovanschina is something of a mess. Its plot revolves around Peter the Great. But the Romanovs didn't allow him to be named on stage. So the plot is largely incomprehensible. Most of the characters are despicable and almost all of them die horribly.
Mussorgsky started it, Rimsky-Korsakov contributed as did Stravinsky, Ravel and Shostokovich. Incredibly it somehow works. Five heads are better than one it seems.
In this scene Ghiaurov storms about in the title role - the evil head of the rebelious musketeers. Burchuladze enters as Dosifei the head of the Old Believers.
Dear Mr Patrick Boyle, ESPECIALLY THANKS FOR THE FANTASTIC VIDEOS !!! THE PLEASURE IS FUL !!! Always with a lot of love and light N.Mirkova and friends, and all my big family from Bulgaria
Patrick, thank you for posting this great scene.
I gather that most of the famous basses of history, including Chaliapin and Christoff, sang Dosifei, so it's interesting that the great Nicolai Ghiaurov chose to perform Khovansky.
I came across a recording of the piece from Scala, in Italian, where Ghiaurov is Khovanski as usual, and his antagonist as Dosifei was Cesare Siepi! Now there was a battle to reckon with.....
I heard Burchuladze at the Ekaterinburg Opera House once. His voice was so rich and resonant it rose up through the seat and I felt like I was having my guts massaged, and that was sitting in the back row of the gods.
Impressionnant, splendide !!!
Merci Agorante !
Francesca
Bravo!!!,wonde4ful voices all!!!
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING,SO INCREDIBLE POWER HOUSE BASS!!!!
Thanks man! I allready searched/listened to him, he's great O:!
I bow to your expertise.
Гяуров на закате ?
Но звучит ярче, чем Бурчуладзе...
Great artists. THNX GOD.
What's funny about this is that the tenor (who's a got a very good voice) is probably a spinto, but he sounds sooo much smaller next to the other guys.
This is an excerpt from a DVD I rented from NetFlix.
In a way this scene is unfair to Ghiaurov. He was near the end of his career when this was recorded and Burcheladze was near the beginning of his.
i love that part is amazing
@operacaster
That's funny. As I have gotten older my voice has risen. I am more comfortable with high F#s and Gs now, while my low Cs and Ds have become gravelly. Maybe you're still too young? I auditioned for and was cast in my first baritone role when I was 64. I sometimes call this the Domingo effect - you live long enough and you become a baritone.
That was amazing
Lol at all the vocal range experts
@Jpmadore1
Basses are more likely to sing in multiple fachs. For example, women who sing Susanna seldom sing Tosca, and Rigolettos don't sing the Count. But Sam Ramey sings Colline and Mephistofele and Basilio and Sarastro. My resume say "Basso Cantate" but I sing profondo roles like Seneca and Caronte. I sing buffo roles like Bartolo and Geronimo. I sing comprimario roles like Zuniga and Simone. I also do drammatic roles like Fasolt and The Magistrate (Cardillac).
Burchladze is a very nice guy too. I went on a double date with two Georgian girls who insisted that we go back stage and meet him. They invited him to out for drinks with us. He declined but was very polite and charming.
The basses are Nicolai Ghiaurov e Paata Burchuladze, but I don't know the tenor althoug the beautiful voice.
He's the one with the high voice.
ok thanks, : ) and yeah bass-baritone is what i meant.... its cool to see and listen
to two basses singing together....
And whats tessitura of the reverend?
I'm really amazed about his timbre
and his potency *---*!!
I got this from House of Opera. It cost about $5 on sale.
ENDLESS THANKS !!! ENDLESS BRAVO FROM BULGARIA
the reverend is the famous georgian bass Paata Burchuladze
Paata Bucheladze. Khovanshina
@winnipoo1
Well you can make whatever pronouncements you like but in opera there are no working bassses who can't sing a high F. I happen to have the Schirmer Operatic Anthology for bass on my desk this afternoon. It has 41 bass arias from about thirty operas. A few of them don't have high Fs but most do or have them elsewhere in the role. There are also a couple high Gs or G flats. There are a couple low Es and one optional low D. A bass without a top F is unemployable.
@07rabo1 The name is Khovanshchina :)
WOW!!! What a passage from 3.08 to 4.10 !!!
What's the name of this opera??
Khovanshchina by Modest Mussorgsky.
Sure. This is from the Vienna Opera DVD. The easiest way to get it is to sign up for NetFlix. There is a free period. Get this DVD. Watch it and cancel. Or better yet don't cancel. There are a lot of opera DVDs on NetFlix.

What is a baritone-bass? Is that like a bass-baritone? The man in the yellow shirt is Nicolai Ghiaurov - a bass. Currently Bryn Terfel is the best known bass-baritone. He would not sing this.
There isn't a whole lot of difference however. A bass sings F to F. And a bass-baritone sings about G to G. So most of the time they overlap.
It isn't that strong, apparently since the character's name is Golitsin, not Galitsky (who is a character in Borodin's Prince Igor). Oops. :)
Tenor is Yuri Marusin
He's outstanding. Better than anything I hear out there today.
@Agorante same here...
@winnipoo1 I'm a bass. roughly three octave range: G2-G4 give or take depending how I project. I'm not a professional, that's just my range. My tessitura stops maybe around middle C, though (C4). However, this is not what I sing. It's what I can sing, but in reality, most basses rarely touch, as Agorante said, the low D or E, and the range is always far more than an octave.
@imadey0utube
It takes time for a voice to settle into it's true range. For men it's even more difficult, as our voices don't really mature until late 20's-early 30's. The best way to determine whether you're a baritone is to find where you're voice "breaks." Men have two passagios...primo and secundo, depending where your voice switches, you might discover what your voice is telling you it is. See Richard Miller's Securing Baritone, Bass-Baritone, and Bass voices for more info.
@TheCantator Согласен с Вами полностью.
Nice, haha
Forgive me if it's a stupid question, but who's the guy in green? He's obviously not a bass, but man, he sings amazing as well!
Now wait... Khovansky isn't evil. He's a power player, just like everyone else in the opera. Galitsky is a far more malevolent character, IMO.
der golizyn ist Juri Marusin.
ROFL!
Is the man with the yellow top a baritone-bass?
Russian opera, my first time here!
Wich Opera is this one???
@imadey0utube
Many guys wonder if they are a "real" bass. A real bass is a singer who can get someone to pay him for singing a bass part. I posted a bunch of karaoke videos of famous bass arias and songs to help people like you. Try my "Im Tiefen Keller" video. If you can't sing the low Fs you are probably a baritone. If you can't sing the high Fs you probably aren't a baritone.
Someone employed at 64 - At 60 then I can hope- openmind5050 has me singing Ol man river. That is about a year ago and since then I have been training to rid my voice of the phony Baritone quality - one full lyric basso here. But not singing f's etc all the time yet. Work on the middle and the edges will follow. Nice voices here - Luciano Neroni, Jose Mardonas, Mr Rammey of course, Ezio Pinza ans Shalapin - poor recording for these older Golden age singers unfortunately and Modesti, Siepi.
Khovanshchina events 1682, short period of power in Moscow Prince Ivan Khovansky, appointed by tsarevna Sofia after the Streltsy uprising head streleckogo order. Khovansky enjoyed great popularity, archers even called him "Batey". Summer 1682 was marked by the activation of the old believers, who hoped using Khovansky to beat the official Church, supported by Sophia, and return Russia to the "old belief". , Was the culmination of a dispute on faith in the faceted chamber of the Moscow Kremlin (July 5, 1682), which has been reduced to mutual accusations of the parties of heresy and ignorance. However, the old believers, leaving the Kremlin publicly announced on the red square about the full victory. This story is finally built Sophia with its nominee Khovansky. In less than three months, as the ruler has found a way to deal with the leader Streltsov: September 17, 1682, Ivan Khovansky and his son Andrei were arrested supporters of Sofia and in the same day without trial executed. The new head of the Streltsy order was appointed Fedor Shaklovity.
Откуда эти вольности в тексте? Это не Досифей, а какой-то папа римский, и что это за кабалистический символ вместо Православного Креста?! Не смотря на гениальность Гяурова, русскою оперу должны исполнять русские! (((
