Hello one and all, and welcome to the first video from new, improved, formerly Not £2 Grand channel that is, Pollitt's Projects. The goal here? Buy old cars that should probably be scrapped and instead, try and save them. The first one being this, my newly acquired 2000 Daimler 4.0 V8.
Parked since 2016, and with a known propensity for rot, this was not a wise purchase. Emphasised further by the fact it doesn't even run. However, just look at it. How could I scrap that beautiful face? I have to give it a chance, right?
In this first video, I explain the origins, the plan and I give it a 'mercy wash' so my neighbours don't hate me. Enjoy!
Filmed and edited by the incredible Mark Taylor-Hankins @inksharkman

How can a channel with barely 10.000 subs have such nice filming and montage? It’s great to have a found a new RUclipsr who cares for the underdog cars. And it’s a nice bloke, fixing his cars on his driveway, even caring about his neighbours. What a gem, immediately subbed ✅
Thanks Chris, keep up the good work! Really looking forward to your future video’s and I hope to someday watch those hubcaps pop into place 👍🏼
Thank you so much for that, it really means the world. We want to have solid production, we want it to look great for you. I'm overjoyed it's not gone unnoticed.
Absolutely it's very enjoyable, natural, not cliched, a real joy to watch for any car enthusiast, the jokes, the transitions, the b-roll and the music choices. 👌
Just to add to what AutoRon said!
What a beautiful car. It still looks the business despite its years. You’re going to do a great job I’m sure. Will look forward to future videos on this.
So glad your back Mr P YT is a better place for having you in it.
Nice one, Chris! I bought a 2002 Jaguar XJ8 VDP (no Daimler version this side of the pond sadly) just over a year ago for $2500 and spent way more than that fixing it up to my standards!
Hands down one of the sweetest cars I have ever owned. Can't wait to see what you do with yours.
Colin = Do you have ANY pix of 'her' on the internet we could look at please ??
Pleases me, seeing XJ's still operating, stateside
Also, reminds me of Edward Woodward & that T.V series, "The Equaliser"
.
Well done for trying to save the old gal Chris, So many have suffered an ignominious death on the banger tracks. Sad how quickly these cars go from being a cherished executives car to a banger in a relatively short time, sign of the times i suppose.
Came for the Daimler, stayed for the lingering cinematic jet-washed-moss shot. Very ASMR-y. Lovely stuff.
TWO SECONDS after I made the comment, "Looks like he's wiping out an entire ecosystem," you said the same thing. Great minds, and all that! The car looks gorgeous even at this early stage. I look forward to seeing its progress!
You just won one new subscriber, will follow this with great interest. Last summer I bought a non running Jaguar xj40. I've now got it running. I had to replace the following, fuel pump & filter. some fuel line, washed the tank out, all the cooling hoses as they started to burst as i started it up. all ignition components, new rad as oilcooler side had leaked mixing auto transmission fluid.flushed gear box, got gears now.next job sought out the brakes calipers, I getting there and hopefully so will you .
Brilliant video. You are going to succeed mightily with your RUclips channel!
That start of another project... how wonderful 🙂
Great buy ! - It even has a sunroof option too ! - Most XJ's were ordered by rich, grumpy old bald men who did not want a sunroof ! so this is a rare thing to see and very nice to have in the summer when it's very warm and sunny :)
So nice to see a Daimler being saved. I sold my own Daimler Double Six Vanden Plas in 2020 so I enjoyed this very much. I wish you all the best. I too have a project car, and, I have to admit, it is a Mercedes Benz…a 300CE 124 Coupe from 1989 with a similar story to your Daimler. Why is it it always rains after a car is washed lol…I have that problem too…
I used to work as a chauffeur for an MD of a major company. Had one of these new in 2000. It was a fantastic car. Did nearly 30000 miles in the first year with no issues. Used to do around 23mpg as well.
I so wish you had called me Chris, I would have so loaded up my van and driven to Bristol to have help you detail the beautiful old English Lady ❤️ 🇬🇧
What a brilliant video; great camera work and post-production. I look forward to future episodes. Thank you.
Never failed an MOT either , looks like a good buy.
WOW, with channels like this who needs TV. Utterly fabulous as usual chris. 🤛💪👍
That's a beautiful car, far too nice for the scrapheap or the ovals. Look at that interior! It's heartwarming to see this one given a chance while it's still in that trough-of-no-value phase of its life. Make it as beautiful as it deserves to be! And talking of beautiful, glad to see your channel alive again! Cheers :)
That is a thing of beauty, love that you are saving it. Good work
Beautiful barge. :) looking forward seeing that mighty v8 make some burbly noises
Good afternoon Chris, really looking forward to following this project, my kinda car. Life at the moment doesn't allow for ill advised car purchases, it used to be my hobby to buy big shonky cheap cars no one was stupid enough to touch, one of the last ones being a Jag 92 Xj12 I bought for 1200 quid, lovely, wofty and powerful........it caught fire.
All the best mate.
That cleaned up lovely, for the money I can’t think of many other cars with such understated luxury.
I own a Black and Chrome 1998 Jaguar XJR supercharged 4.0L V8 with a black leather interior with wood and it comes with all books and an old cell phone that can have if you want.
Fully loaded with all options including the head light spray complications and an extra front windshield defroster and heated back seats.
A REAL GEM!!!!
It was first purchased in Sarina Ontario Canada on April 8th, 1998. I’m currently having the timing chains all replaced.
It is located in Canada.
Best regards,
From
Greg
P.s. I love your video
I’m open for offers
Really enjoyed this and the way you've done it, Chris. You're a great presenter. Good to see the G-Shock getting an outing too. Looking forward to next one - subscribed!
Great video Chris. Can’t tell you how much I enjoy watching a car emerge from its own garden ecosystem. Even if the Daimler became a £700 driveway ornament, it’s still a lovely thing!
Cheaper than a pair of stone lions for the gateposts!
Thats a lovely looking old thing. Now its clean you'd never know it was only 700 quid sitting on the drive.
Any bloke that wears a Harrington is fine by me Chris .....lovely presentition and a fine motor ...!!!!!
Great video update Chris. Nice nice new place you have now too, much easier for tinkering.
Great video on a beautiful car and delivered in a witty and entertaining manner.
I'm just coming to the end of restoring my '02 XJ8 sport. All the same issues with corrosion, waist seals, suspension bushes, paintwork, etc now sorted and I can testify that it was absolutely worth it. Nothing else on the road quite like these last of the steel bodied XJ, x308s.
I don't subscribe to the oft repeated view that the AJ16 engined cars are better either. When one considers the various developments and varied use of these engines over the last 20 years and the fact that those that really know them reckon that when those much publicised early issues were dealt with, these were a pretty much bullet-proof motor, then I'd take the more muscular and sophisticated AJ26/27 every time.
I can't wait to see how the journey goes - subscribed 😁
*Very nice, I'd have my old X308 Jag back in a heartbeat*
Love this ! My dad was a chauffeur in the 80s and 90s and his boss bought a new Daimler every 3 years ! So great memories coming back
You've asked on Twitter to leave kind comments so here we go.
This morning during breakfast I got a push notification from RUclips that a new video from Pollitt's Projects was available. I cannot remember I've subscribed, perhaps you've renamed a channel I was subscribed to. Anyway, my first thought was that it must be worth while viewing so I decided to watch it with a large cup of tea and I wasn't disappointed. Production quality is excellent and the content is very enjoyable too. I am genuinely looking forward to the next episodes!
Thank you for your lovely message! Much appreciated.
Queen elizabeth 11 had one of these brand new lwb daimler v8's in the same colour delivered to her in 2001, as a personal car to chauffeur her around. You should feel like a king when you get the engine running and take it for a spin.
I buy the things people don’t and boy do I love them, Iv just sucked keep up the great content. Looking forward to seeing the up and coming episodes / projects 🎉
Brilliant! Hurry up with the next one!
£700 Daimler, what can go wrong, for £700 who cares… looking better after that very satisfying wash. Good luck Chris!
Good luck Chris. However, I think you're gonna need a bigger pressure washer! At least it's no longer a biohazard
I bought a 72000 mile Daimler LWB V8 same as yours via online auction for £5K. I thought that was cheap but £700!, although you have considerably more work to do than I had. Mine needed some TLC. I’ve serviced it, given the interior a deep clean and sorted numerous minor issues. I still need to renew the headlining and upgrade the timing gear you mentioned. The car is an absolute dream to drive. Wonderfully smooth, powerful and comfortable especially over today’s poor road surfaces. The gearbox is “sealed for life” in name only. It’s well worth changing the oil and filter to prolong its life. These are beautiful cars. (Subscribed)
It looks lovely Chris. I hope it’ll be an easy restoration for you, I’m glad you saved it.
Fantastic video, looking forward to following the journey to get it back on the road!
I have several thoughts here.
1. This project will be interesting.
2. You need an outside tap, power supply and a decent pressure washer.
3. Show me in the boot and all the little Cubby's. These kind of cars have loads of hidden compartments.
4. Why is it so long but inside seems like it's the size of a Mondeo.
5. Good luck - hope you get it up and running
6. If they seller had washed it, he probably could've got his £900 that he wanted
Yeah! Another ill advised car resto! 👏
1) amazing filming and editing
2) love the T-Shirt…
3) great car
4) great story
Yes Chris 💪🏻 when it finished you can be a jag… sorry Daimler… man and waft everywhere like a plutocrat😍
#SaveFerris!
Despite it's flaws and starting issues, it is still too good to let it continue decaying under
all that moss and grime.
Good luck with your restoration, when fully sorted these are great cars to own and drive.
I have ran two of the XJ6 cars, both for 190K miles on the straight six engines and for 11 years each before trading them in as I was using them for business and motorway miles. Now I have a 4.2 V8 XKR and if the V8 have regular water check and oil changes they should do very high mileage. Only issues I saw was crankshaft position sensor which stopped the engine firing and the headlight wiring in the wings is very fine and sometimes they need new wires running. They are great cars and I don't think you will be disappointed. Sometimes the alloy rear bumper mounts can corrode and need changing and the rear subframe mounts on one car needed changing. Enjoy it.
Thank you for the comment and the valuable info. Much appreciated.
Nothing like a bit of John Barry to capture the mood...
This has got to be a keeper !
Properly maintained you can be driving 1'st class as long as you like, - and for pennies !
Well at least there was no danger of that pressure washer lifting paint!!!
I recently had the pleasure & pain of borrowing my friends Super V8 in the same colour.
The pleasure was its a lovely thing to drive, that very very much got out of its own way when right foot was extended!
The pain was fuelling it, but for a couple of days it was a wafty joy (total opposite to my own stable of vehicles!)
Though with that one having replacement wings in a notably different shade of Decadent Blue/Green I couldn't shake the feeling when driving it that I was "going on holiday by mistake" (I'm aware that was a Jaaaag Mk11 but still)
Really looking forward to seeing this saved
xXx
Most definitley a car that needs to be saved and looks great after a quick wash. That interior looks to be in remarkably good condition. A great find and I for one cant wait to see the finished result. £700!!! if all goes well you will have a right bargain on your hands. Great video and well presented, well done you.
Much appreciated. I'm sure I'll put more than another £700 into it, but it'll be worth it. This one is a keeper.
My dad had an X308 XJ8 in the same colour, was my favourite car. If it wasn’t for the fact I can’t really afford to maintain one i’d love an XJR of the same era with the mesh grille.
Ill-advised maybe but it's a V8 Daimler so it's also wonderful. Looking better already after all that moss was removed!
Absolutely beautiful, looking forward to see it being worked on.
Chris - absolute quality mate! This is going to be majestic. What a beautiful car - the design has aged so well. The car looks incredible already… good luck with the rest of it. 👌👍
All the best with this project! These really are great cars once nurtured back to health and it's well worth spending even a few grand to restore.
You're almost certainly correct to suspect the fuel pumps having failed. Note I used the plural there: the Supercharged version has two - I'm not sure about the non-Super model. And, yes, removing the tank is a pig of a job. What seems to happen is that the pumps get clogged up with "congealed" petrol - that happened in mine having only stood for three months over winter... And that's another thing: like Rollers these cars need to be driven regularly to keep 'em healthy.
The hole you discovered under the floor is a typical corrosion spot on these cars: my 2001 model had the same issue... and you'll probably find it will need welding around bits of the front subframe too.
Another common-ish issue is the door mirrors having a mind of their own. You can be driving along and they suddenly start repeatedly folding in and out of their own accord. That's caused by the weather sealing failing in the driver's door leading to the switch panel's myriad electrical connecters getting shorted out by (rain)water.
It looks as though the headlining in the back is drooping: "They ALL do that, sir".
Engine-wise these cars are pretty "bomb-proof" in my experience, with appropriate servicing, of course.
Wonderful stuff, so much potential in that beauty. Loved the Rover series. I'm hoping for a cameo from man about town / international Playboy R U Ben at some point. Your vids are beautifully shot and presented. Cracking! Love to you and yours. G.
Oh worry not, Ree-you-ben is on board and will feature in future videos!
@@PollittsProjects give him a firm handshake and a wink from me!
Looking forward to the journey!
Fine looking machine. Looking forward to following your progress with the Daimler
What a beauty! It was so satisfying to watch you clean the car and step by step see the car shine again! I hope your neighbours can appreciate this beauty of an X308 in your doorway 🙂 Looking forward to the next steps - and finally to seeing the car on the road again! All the best for your Daimler project!
Glad you’re saving another. I’ve just finished doing my Jag x308, was off the road for 10 years.
Top project! Looking forward to the next episode.
I was excited about the electric pressure washer until it started 😂
It's good, but it's so, so loud!
@@PollittsProjects Does it get decent pressure out/last that long? I hadn't realized they were even a thing!
@@ProjectWestfalia The battery lasts a long time, that was all on one charge. As for pressure, it'll wash a car, but you ain't cleaning your patio with it!
I bought from Aldi's last year a £19.99 pressure washer and what a little gem it is too, plenty of oomph for a car clean, comes with a snow cannon thingy the only downer was not a very long flex but fittings very easy to fix up a hose to and I am quite pleased for £20. Its lasted too, expecting it to die a cheapness early death but just finished blasting the moss from outside on the path and windowsills giving the windows a good blasting as well on the flat.
Terrific video, mate. That has to be the world's most frustrating "jet" wash though! 😬😄
Well done for saving, look forward to watching your progress
loved the video I have just got a 3.2 V8 executive 2001 its great to see these fine cars on the road. Can't wait for the next one
The best news for those of us who follow you elsewhere is that you’ve finally got the house (garage) you wanted. Well done!
Ooh! I’m excited already 👏
- a quick word to say how much I have been enjoying your RUclips films especially the little ZR 👍💛 amazing what £200 quid & a bit of elbow grease gets you! Keep up the good work looking forward to all the Daimler happenings! Best Steve
Good to see the car being saved and looking forward to pt2.
Interior looks lovely, good luck with the project.
Well done in sorting that jag out it's well too good to scrap so it looks like you saved it good luck .
Soooo envious of you, I’d love to do what you’re doing and they’re such a beautiful looking thing
That Sir is a very handsome motor conveyance!
Grace, Pace and Space (oh sorry that's Jaguar!) is all there to be enjoyed. Good luck with electrical gremlins.
Coincidence is I have just finished watching a RUclipsr in the States bring a well worn 2003 S Type 3 Litre back to life and he absolutely loves everything about it now while being a big sceptic at the start.
Beautiful and classic car, you don't see any more.
Cracking opening episode, Chris
Very much looking forward to this, and future Pollitt projects on the revamped channel!
Go Chris! Love the spirit and irrational rationale.
Great to see you posting here again. Love the car, and what a transformation. Keep at it! :)
Looking forward to seeing how you get on with this. My dad had an XJ Sovereign in the same colour and engine back in 2001. Lovely car.
Really looking forward to this project I'm glad this Daimler is getting saved it was painful to watch that battery powered trying to tackle all that moss
Been really looking forward to this. Great to see a new project!!
It looks cool with the oxidation and mold. I can imagine a very rich eccentric artist driving this car.
The Daimler is lovely. There was once someone at my work who drove a Morris Ital which was completely green/brown with moss and mould. The only clear areas were the window glass and lights. It was difficult to see what the original colour was, but you probably wouldn't want to know because BL chose some monumentally awful colours for its run of the mill cars, probably influenced by the colour scheme of the cells in Porridge. This thing was still pottering around at least ten years ago and for all I know it may still be on the road.
i am really looking forward to seeing how this one comes out. Nice one chris!
Great to see you on the content again! Looking forward to the first start and luxury wafting around!
Can't wait for the next episode. I do love the old Jag/Daimler saloons.
LOVE this project, Chris! Glad to see you making videos on it. Love these so much especially being a Daimler.
Love the car, and love the t-shirt! I actually saw the band of the same name in London back in ‘99/‘00, and really loved their ‘It Means Everything’ album. 😊
Beautiful car, looking forward to seeing you getting it on the road 👍
I had one a long time back. It was the V12 version. One owner who had a driver. It was fun going to the petrol station filling up, close the cap and people think your done. oh no walk round and fill the second tank 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Looks like the beginnings of another great project and vlog, better than regular tv programmes any time
Good hunting. Sir you are like me when I had eyesight. I will subscribe and look forward to this and other mad projects. Mine? Extremely rusty 944, dead 3 year abandoned LS400, an Esprit that was dragged out of a burning barn. The list goes on. No more....
Lovely stuff Chris, looking forward to see how the project goes!!
Looks glorious everytime I see it. And what a lovely location you reliving in now, it's equally great to see that as well. Looking forward to the journey of the car.
Absolutely superb video Chris! Great camerawork alongside funny dialogue. Absolutely looking forward to all the video updates on that beautiful Daimler.
Magnificent. Good luck with it. I had a liner issue in my 98 XJ8. Loved the car. While it worked.
I'm going to love this even more than the Rover project. Saw this on Twitter a while back, and am excited about watching it all come together. Also, congratulations on the new home, and garage!
Excellent video, looking forward to seeing this beautiful car brought back to life. One comment regarding the gearbox, they’re not sealed for life and it might be wise to think about replacing the transmission oil and filter if all else goes well.wishing you all the luck in the world with the car Chris.
I shall watch this space with great interest, THIS is the kind of project I would like to do, thanks Chris
Fabulous potential in this lovely car Chris, I'm sure it will make a cracking keeper once you are done.
Love the car! Would look good next to my 95 XJ40 4.0 Sovereign
