I feel the same with an 05 Lexus 430LS. However, I wouldnt say no to your Daimler. Looks beautiful. The only hesitation would be reliability. I had a new 4.2 S Type in 05, and it broke down 4 times in the first 30000 miles, all with different issuies. The Lexus has now reached 90k and been totally fault free.

He was so cool, Heavy smoker (2 packs Winston/day) and drove so fast. My sister and I had many fights in my mom's xjc 5.3.🙈🙈 Such a good days past. Two beautiful cars from an era where almost all cars (certainly in this sector) had real individuality and style. Cars have certainly grown in size over the years too. I remember parking my 1999 308 sport next to a 2006 phantom and it looked tiny by comparison ... but alot prettier!😁 Jaguar really nailed it with the 300/308 body style. For me, the Daimler is the winner. A concourse super V8 of this era would most certainly be on my "lottery win" car shopping list👌

    Daimler one of a Kind.
Just the XJ up until X350 the lowest Super Sedan ever made.
And that height gives the XJ a driving experience with no comparison.
A Luxury Sedan, that sits as low as a Sportscar, surrounded by ultimate luxury, while having Muscle Car power in an instant.
    Terrifying fast acceleration.
I recently had a guest , who had a XJS V12, and he was knocked of his feet by the acceleration of the Super V8!
And a great plus is the reliability of these Engines.
Having no Variable Valves, and fitted with the 5G-Tronic Transmission , made by Mercedes, able to handle up to 700 Bhp, it is extremely solid.
Thank You all for making this nice Video.!

The car immediately had problems keeping a charge and the battery would go dead after only 48 hours. The car went into the RR dealership in Las Vegas so many times that they literally had it more than I did. At one point they added a second battery which also did not solve the problem. With only 4 thousand. miles on the car and unanswered letters to the head of RR without any reply or help, I wholesaled the car.

I own an xj40, x300, x308 and an x350 and the most reliable one is the daimler x300 that is still going strong after 20 years and 250,000 km with minimum repairs. It is my daily driver and it's as reliable as it gets. If someone is looking to buy a luxury car from this era i strongly advice the x300 v6 daimler model of 1995 over any x308 as they are practically the same car but far less complicated.
On the other hand definitely go for a daimler x308 over the bentley for reliability, parts availability and running costs.

The San Francisco Bay Area is the Jaguar capital of the USA. Jaguar broke into the local market in the early 50s by racing successfully at two regional tracks, Sears Point and Laguna Seca. Even after British Leyland effectively destroyed the British car industry in the '70s, a few plucky Bay Area Jag dealers soldiered on. As a result, I ended up owning three used X-308 series sedans, all of them great cars, Jaguars through and through.
Of the three, the one I regret selling most is the Vanden Plas Supercharged, the version of the Daimler Super V8 featured here, that could not use the Daimler name in the States because it was registered here to Daimler Benz.
I consider the X-308 generation to be the high point of Jaguar sedans, and that puts them pretty much at the top of the heap worldwide. Thanks to the reviewers here who appreciate this car's excellence and describe it effectively to the younger generation of car enthusiasts.

These cars were literally hammers for the well healed owner , the Bentley was definately the sledgehammer , the daimler was the 4 pound hammer , both more than you normally need but can do a bigger job too . The sledgehammer does its job brutally and fast , the 4 pound does it with more effort required but the job can be done tidier because of it .

Although the Daimler is a full size four door saloon, its amazing how its just dwarfed by the Turbo R when they're parked side by side. I have always loved both of these cars, but more so the Jaguar XJR version of the X308. Like most people, I was just stunned when I heard the performance figures of the new Jag, back when it was launched. As to which I'd rather own, I'd have to live with each for a time. But as great a car as the X308 was, the Bentley is just that little more special.

    • @ThirteenMatt
      @ThirteenMatt 3 года назад +1

I think you saw an XJR, not a Super V8. I don't think the R brakes were ever offered on anything else than the XJR, and eventhough the Super V8 was available in short wheelbase, official production number for the X308 say that only 76 SWB Super V8 were made, vs 2387 LWB and 15203 XJR (which were all SWB).
Nothing against the XJR: I bought one after a long hesitation between XJR and Super V8 and ultimately decided on the Jag. And I love it to bits :)

@@stevejelly3161 those engines indeed belonged in an aeroplane and were made better by electronic fuel injection in the later models. The smoothness of that V12 is just unmatched, even by that huge brute of a V8 in the Bentley. Lovely motors they are.

@@subarnosinha8042 Hey i need to be careful about criticizing the Bentley (which i LOVE)..... as it's the gentleman's channel !!!
      ...
We both remember back in the 80's the Jaguar XJS bought from the Exchange and Mart was THEE car for "stopped cheques" !!!
      ...
And we know that 30 years on, realy they don't get better !!!
      ...
The exotic Italian "super cars" were trouble when i was just starting out as a mechanic ..... but again on youtube they appear "reliable" !!!
      ...
It baffles me why people will purchase a massive BMW 4x4 for £70,000 when they are noisey and shake the occupants around ???
      ...
But those FANTASTIC cars like the V12 Jaguar or the Bentley demand a "lifestyle" of a preset destination .... (like driving to an office and back home).......(or weddings)...... but YES closing the door on either and starting the engine must be like smoking "magic mushrooms" as they are so "GREAT" !!!
      ...
Yeh the noisey big fan cooling an engine that does,nt even get hot and just "flys" a quality saloon on aeroplane tyres and it turns you into a "pelican" !!!!
      ....
Coz everywhere you look, you've got a GREAT BIG BILL !!!
      ...
      But worth every penny lol

For driving I will take the Damlier Super V8, The Turbo R is great in every way, the only problem is the ride. Turbo R floats too much and the high centre of gravity makes it can't go fast around corners, whereas the Daimler sits low and turns. But both cars are superbly build.

I suppose fuel consumption isn't a major concern if you're looking at one of these, had a jaguar xj 6, at best it managed 15 mpg, with a heavy right foot about 10.

I did love my 1998 Jaguar Sovereign 4 litre V8, I had it from 2014 up to this year, Yes it guzzled the gas, but was a beautiful drive, i had the timing chains and tensioners changed to new type at a reasonable cost and the engine did sound a lot better, also at the time i replaced the coolant pump and new thermostat and housing, but unfortunately the garage which did the work was fairly sloppy and wished i had not taken it there, because the car was never the same again, and kept failing, Had a new fuel pump and filter fitted but i'm sure the work was shoddy and smelled fuel all the time, just bad workmanship, at only 9,800 miles total she was scrapped i just could not afford her any longer, had to receive peanuts for her as it was just getting to be an expensive run around, sad to see her go but needs must. I just wish i could go back in time and select a better garage for the work done, some of these major retailers just do not respect the customers anymore, Listers of Droitwich were the culprits and sorry to say they ruined a beautiful motor. Shame on them.

Daimler will be much easier to live with maintenance wise. Both beautiful cars however. But there's a lot of resentment against high-end cars more and more these days. I would stick with a Daimler or Jaguar.

  • @NorceCodine

Always wanted a Turbo R, but the horror stories about maintenance and reliability is looming very large in my head. Every exemplar for sale already had like 5-6 owners, tells you the whole story. Still, I would be interested in a "nicer" one (left-hand drive).

I have driven both....... sort of..... and I don't think they are comparable, they go about their business in different ways, and both have lots of strong points and a few minus, the Bentley should be for special occasions I feel.
I still love my MK11 Granada Ghia X, rides beautiful but my word it's dated inside, it is mostly about the styling too, and modern Bentleys do not have that in my opinion - I mean bentayga, Mulsanne why so ugly ?, nicest I think is Brooklands coupe, now we are talking style
