Justin, It frustrates me that Roland has not thanked you with a nice Roland kit. I mean VAD top of the line TD-50. I personally have spent about 5k on Roland gear maybe more. (We are not going add that up. I don't wanna know.) I was an Alesis guy unit finding this channel about 5 / 6 years ago. I only obtaining all this Roland gear because of you. I just went and got the VAD Toms 14", 12" and 10". Another cool 1600 dollars. Come on Roland set this guy up! He has made you how many thousands of dollars? It's just amazing seeing you with the old TD-30 still on other video.

He probably wouldn't accept it... If viewers knew he was being set up by any particular brand it would bring into question the authenticity of his reviews. I would be very surprised if he hasn't been approached by all of the big brands with sponsorship deals.

After not playing for nearly 50 years I bought an Alesis Command X to see if I could get back into playing. I was surprised with how fast my skills came back and how much fun playing again was.
After a year of playing on average 3 to 4 hours/week the Alesis started falling apart so I was faced with either replacing some pads or moving on.
I've known about the Roland brand for years and thought the VAD's were interesting. Wife said "you only live once and you're not getting any younger so just do it" and I did. I bought the VAD-507 and wow, the difference is beyond what I expected. The VAD's play like a real drum set and the fun factor is off the charts for me. As Justin mentioned being able to position the drums where you want makes a big difference and hitting full size heads just feels so natural. The digital snare, hi-hat and ride feel like playing an acoustic snare and cymbals. The sounds in the module along with the editing and tuning took some time for me to figure out but I can now tailor the sounds for whatever I want for any type of music. The quality of the Roland drums is a real bonus and I paired DW 3000 series hi-hat, snare and double kick with the set.
They put a big smile on this old drummer dude's face every time he plays them.

I recently purchased the VAD 504. I like really like the flexibility of positioning the various parts of the kit and the pad sizes. I used to have the TD17 KVX. The 504 looks really nice but is definitely heavier and bulkier. If I had the ability for a do-over, I’d definitely buy it again. I find it so comfortable to play.

I have the td27kv2 and love it with a different layout ie. ride between high and low tom and mounting the mid tom to the left of the high hat as a 2nd snare. I do find the kick roams at times but ended up using some rubber matting underneath to anchor it to and soften the sound - also changing the bass beater to something softer with a patch is a great way to reduce noise.

I have an acoustic and a Roland kit so I fully appreciate the qualities of look and playability of both shown here. If I was replacing the e-kit then I’d go for the cheaper option but if I had only one kit for both jobs of practice and live gigs, the VAD would ace it.

I'm a beginner player with about 20 hours on an acoustic kit. A couple days ago I picked up a td-17kvx2. I'm struggling to get used to it. The pads seem very bouncey. Do find it hard to switch between kits. I'm thinking I'll need to setup my acoustic kit again so I don't forget how that feels. I bought the ekit because sometimes I practice late at night and I underestimated how loud it is.

    I got the TD-27KV2 and added a PD-120L 12” floor tom, a 16-inch crash, a BT-1 bar trigger.
But what REALLY changed the feel: (2) 36” chrome Gibraltar curved bars for the center horizontals & (2) 30” for the left and right horizontal. $100 in chrome bars and a 12” tom made the kit feel MUCH bigger.
The horizontal bars it comes with are 22” and make the kit feel small. Swapping those out it feels like a flagship model.
    Awesome reviews, thank you!

Hi Justin! Do you think the TD27KV2 hotspots more on the toms than the VAD507? My biggest concern is that it would hotspot. But since they introduced positional sensing on the toms as well, maybe they managed to eliminate that by noticing when you hit it dead center (and lowering the velocity curve of that particular hit by some) Whereas the VAD series use a 3 trigger design along the edges, like ATV for instance, so it must be less "hotspotty." What do you think?
How did it feel it hotspot-wise?

Ok, I am struggling here. I own the TD-27KV2. Do you guys think that the VAD series Toms are a better choice than the PD-128? Obviously the size is a big difference. But I am talking about playability and general feel. Does the VAD trigger system make that much of a difference over the older PD-128.

I have a TD27KV2 and the only thing I hate is the kick and the rack. I am all about the freedom to move things where I want for comfort. The kick moves here and there and is starting to piss me off. I have plans to change these out over time. I am fine with everything else.

I too own the TD27 and had to purchase a kickblock (velcro) to your drum mat, to stop the kick from moving during live shows...It was a cheap solution and did the trick. I agree the rack is not the best, tends to bend and move some from relocating the kit from the house to shows and back.

  • @gordonpanther7766

That's great, thanks Justin🙂. I've started thinking of upgrading from my TD-17KVX. It's fantastic (and better than I'll ever get), but after a hell of a lot of use by me and my son's bands, bits are falling apart - cymbals have had several superglueing sessions already! I'm not a great fan of the VH-10 hi hat; I'm on the second one and that's on the way out. To me, the mechanism (top cymbal and a plastic tube for bottom) just looks delicate. The VH-14D double cymbal HH on the TD-27KV2 looks sturdier (and better). And it's 'digital' (I've not played one but sounds like it means it will have sound variation across the surface), as is the snare and ride. The upgraded module sounds like a big plus over the TD-17. I'd like to be able to add more cymbals and the TD17 is maxed out; the TD27 will allow me to add another 3 or 4 bits if/as I should like in future.
I'd been coming to the conclusion that the VAD series put more focus on looks and wow factor, vs the TD series having that money spent on the tech/tools, and I'd heading toward the TD series as a result (though I'd been comparing to the VAD504 rather than the VAD507). The big kick drum on VADs actually looked like a down side to me (possible extra noise - mostly I play on headphones) and size (small room). These aspects are confirmed by you.
I could replace the bits that are on the way out on the TD-17 - but then I'd also want to add some stuff (and that's limited - no more input slots), and after a Excel spreadsheeting the shit out of the various models, I see that new, complete kits have a 32-39% 'saving' (in a sense) over buying the individual components. For the projected cost I'd be heading toward to repair and beef up my TD17, I'd be better off buying a complete new TD-17 and offsetting the extra cost by breaking and selling the decent bits of the old kit!
I think I've convinced myself the TD-27KV2 is the clear winner - for me.
Now - I just have to convince my wife! Any tips... anyone? I can't play the 'mental health' card - any goodness drumming does me is negated by the damage it does to the rest of the family! 😄🥁

You asked for tips so here's my take on it. I play Edrums due to their sound quality over acoustics AND portability. I would never even think of buying a VAD due to the sheer size and weight. It's a no brainer to me - get the KV.

I wouldn't say the VAD form factors are only about looks for public performances. The sizing, the setup and general sense of the kit feels so much more immersive than the TDs with the pancake shells. This makes playing more enjoyable and easier to progress. Plus for beginners, having larger pads makes learning complicated things or things played fast, easier as you are less likely to miss the pad or hit the rims and the spacing is more analogous to acoustic drums so for muscle memory, it's easier to move between them. I only use it at home and don't regret getting the VAD507 over the KV2

I love it and am set for a long long time. If I get sick of the sounds or want to expand I have ez drummer 3 and ssd 5.5 (both Black Friday deals I got really cheap). • @NigelMarston
    @NigelMarston 11 месяцев назад

Got to be honest... I don't understand e-kits that look like acoustics. Maybe it's because I have an e-kit to practice on where noise is more of an issue, so the VAD series being louder is the opposite of what I need.
Also, quite like the obviously NOT acoustic styling of the pads. People are always fascinated by them .
I would like bigger floor toms though - greater diameter. And the capability to add a few different sized cymbals but I'm being picky. Despite the price of the TD27 (plus all the extras), my acoustic kit is the *real* one in my eyes, and the one I love most.

While I agree that this comparison is a more level field, but, when people are shopping for something at this price, it's generally it's dictated by budget. I would say in most cases people aren't deciding between 2 kits $2000 apart. It's going to be X amount of dollars and finding something close, not jumping up 2K. That said I wish they didn't cost as much as a used car.

Roland needs to get its collective heads out of the clouds. A $1900 difference between the two is crazy. The KV2 should cost $1900. You can get an amazing laptop and all the software you need to record professionally for that $$.

What's your kit setup for live gig's or do you just play at home?

I just practice with eDrums at home, and for recording. When I play live, it’s acoustic drums or hand percussion for smaller rooms

Only $1900 price difference? Might as well as play accoustic set for price of VAD-507. Prefer lower cost!

Bro that's a very large price range. But for venues, stick with a Japanese brand. Right now I'm liking Roland and EFNOTE.
