Chris Stuckmann reviews Lady in the Water, starring Paul Giamatti, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jeffrey Wright, Bob Balaban, Sarita Choudhury, Cindy Cheung, Freddy Rodríguez, Bill Irwin, Jared Harris. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Развлечения
We all have to atleast give credit to Shyamalan for making original movies and taking risks. Also The Happening is hilarious.
Alex So You like hot dogs, right?
I do
Homer Simpson: Mmm...hot dogs...

I do, i know some of his movies are cringe or downright hilariocity but i do have mad high praise for his ideas. It's pretty inspiring how he comes up with his movie ideas.
Edit : except of course, The Last Airbender
Lady in the Water is one of my favorite movies of all time. I loved the absurdity of the mythology, it captured my imagination as a child more than any other film I've ever seen.
I actually like Shyamalan...honestly i feel most of his movies have been mis-categorized by Hollywood. Take The Village for example; that wasn't a true horror movie. It was sold as such, and the day i saw it, people were literally walking out of the theater. It's more of a modern-day fairytale. But even in that context it's hard to fully categorize it. Unbreakable is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I believe was copied in the tv show Heroes which was largely uninspired... but anyway, great work Chris! Love your reviews.
Literaly watched people walk out the theater but unfortunately I stayed!!!
Unbreakable deconstructed the superhero genre even before that genre really took of and years prior to Nolan's Dark Knight and Snyder's Watchmen.
I completely agree. The Happening I didn't like it because of the acting of Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel.
I'm weird. I actually liked this movie, overall.
Me too -weird is good!
I like it too!
I love this movie I watch it annually.
Hahaha me also, I kinda liked this one! We are not alone ;)
saaammmeee
I loved the part when the little kid reads the cereal boxes tho, it's so pure ❤️
I love how much time and dedication you put into your videos. You watched the movie for us (but duh cause that's what you need for the review), you read the book it was based off of TWICE, and then you watched it again. I have to say, good job mann, keep being awesometacular!
+The Octagon Master with Super Saiyan Vader Cruise i have seen you everywhere, or at lest your profile pic
Chris is also a good time no alcohol required
Omg really nice attention to detail, I love how you spelled it "mann" instead of just "man" because his name is spelt "stuckMANN", I would buy you comment on blu-ray
+UpToeDownSasquatch glad you noticed :D
The Octagon Master with Super Saiyan Vader Cruise that was really cool what you said
I really got into the characters. I loved how distinct each apartment was and how matched to the tenant' s personality. I love the concept of a group of strangers cooperating toward a goal. None of the apt complexes I've lived in were like that in the slightest.
I felt everything in this movie. The msg behind it was also soooooo beautiful.
I've watched so many of his reviews that I can now predict what score he's gonna give
Same here
Me too
Yup, same here. Its almost kinda freaky.
+Aidan Quinn I'm usually a plus or minus off .. I had him giving this one a C-.
+Aidan Quinn interesting,I have not stayed awake for a full review. Sum it up in 60, go see it or not. Cheap or no crap.
Please review the sequel: "The Dude in the Dirt".
Thanks for putting it so meticulously. I've always loved Lady in the Water for its unconventional nature. Its a fairy tale and if you see it from a kid's perspective its actually quite memorable. I think this would probably grow into a classic as time passes and will be remembered as one of Shyamalan's greatest works.
I for one can totally agree with you here. I just finished watching it again and it just amazes me how awesome this movie really is.
I loved the way this movie made me feel. I loved how I felt during and after the movie. In 2020, it took me away, just for a while. Let's not forget that this is the true magic of movies. No critic score can remove that.
Yes! Well said , I totally agree
They should sell the lady in the water back to marvel.
+Chandler Bing SpongeBob is DC idiot. You don't know shit about comics or anime.
nope i want them to sell it to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment ;)
I can tell this joke will spread over the web like an STD which we all get bothered by but fuck it, it's funny now.
I'm going to sell the rights to me back to marvel. Hopefully they can do something better.
+Chandler Bing is rich from reviewtechusa your new sponsor?
I think you got it spot on, its certainly a mix of good and bad. One thing that really bothered me with this movie is it all happened in one location. Maybe because it wasn't the most exciting movie i was hoping for a change of scenery but it always bothered me with this one.
This is one of those movies where you have to listen to what they tell you and you have to abide by the rules the plot sets. If she has to be picked up from the same place she entered this world in why would she leave? Also in the beginning they explain once the humans moved away from the water they started going down hill I’m sure that’s also another factor that keeps her close to home. There would be no reason to venture outside of the set location outside of you just wanting to see that happen nor is there any room or reason to speed this movie up with action because the writers and directors want you to feel what the characters feel they want you to be just as clueless anxious and doubtful as the characters do. In 2020 compared to the story telling we have now I think this is a great movie
Yea i wanted to see the blue world.
It's interesting to see you her xisuma
In my opinion, Lady In The Water is a beautifully filmed, wonderfully atmospheric, convoluted mess. You can get stuff out of it, if you are able to follow it.
Oddly, I feel the same way.
Bryce Dallas Howard emerging from the pool = Iconically sexy as hell.
Lady in the Water reminds me to some of the most beautiful dreams I ever had. I'm so happy to be one of those who understand the real message and to be inspired by it.
Me too
Glad someone understands

This is correct man speaking people^
It's gonna be awesome.
He just released photos on his Twitter page, but yes, I hope he does one soon as well
I want to see his anime collection... Hopefully soon
So in the same way I defend the Star Wars prequels, you defend the M. Night films that most people hate.
The Star Wars prequels aren't absolutely awful films with no redeeming qualities, but they were definitely jarring for those who watched the originals. It seems the fans anger has turned into an effort to wash away the bad taste of the prequels. Even the new Star Wars Battlefront ignores the Clone Wars despite it having potential for some awesome multiplayer battles.
As for M Night, he comes off as a bit arrogant based on how I've seen him act. First casting himself in Lady in the Water and then calling The Last Airbender "the most culturally diverse movie ever made" in an interview with TIME. That's really asking for a backlash which only got worse when the film came out in 2010.
The prequels had good ideas on paper and potential, but it suffered from bad directions and script. The clone wars saga was cool, seeing Yoda in action, and Darth Plaguis novel explained from how midichlorian work to Palpatine's rise to power and how everything lead up to the prequels perfectly.
+Rob Cain yes the 3 pre are pure crap. Real star wars fans do not acknowledge their existence. I do not
Clownsatthecemetery What about Maul, having a black Jedi, Yoda and Lee? If you dislike, your right to your fan believe as mine
+Rob Cain Attack of the Clones has almost no redeeming qualities.
This movie is about the power of art (literature, movies, *stories*) to help us find out who we are, and to help us find our purpose.
In the intro fairy tale thing, we are told that humans have been ignoring the water women muses sent to inspire them to greatness. We have become disillusioned with stories. We only really experience them in the form of hollywood films, and our interpretations of them are filtered through the eyes of critics, who are especially jaded. For example even if a filmmaker tried to use rain as a metaphor for purification, a critic would see it is as just a cliche.
So we have a situation where people don't know how to analyze movies anymore to really connect with them. They make superficial connections, like Paul Giamatti does at first when he assumes that he is the protector, that the guild are the men, that the healer is the old lady, and that the interpreter is the crossword guy. On the surface, these all seem to fit. We find out later that he is completely wrong on all counts. He was overlooking the true way he fit into the story because he was trying to force a more conventional interpretation. Meanwhile, Story herself was unable to tell him he was wrong, because she is here as the representation of a work of art or a story--she can't tell us how to interpret her, she can only give us clues to nudge us towards inspiration.
So the film is reminding us to view art/stories/movies with the eyes of a child, to drink in their wonder again in hopes that we might be inspired. (the old asian lady wouldn't tell Paul Giamatti the story unless she viewed him as harmless, like a child--the one dude said he wanted to believe in the story like a kid again). It reminds us that our destinies may be something that we did not anticipate.
+bw13187 This movie is more about the power of the ego, how the ego of the side of a mountain and total narcissism.
Perfectly summed up! Finally watched this film and enjoyed its message
As ironic as this statement is he could have brought that across in a less egotistical manner like making the critic so obviously a prat and not making everyone behave in a ridiculous manner(to a point). Also not making himself seem like Jesus would help. He doesn't have to put a neon sign up either explaining it but getting a message across kind've requires the audience to have a touch point and it's hard to not get bogged down with all the random crazy addition and poor acting.
Counterpoint: It's dumber than a sack of hammers.
Bravo! Someone really, really gets this movie! I got this movie. But all art is open for interpretation. So nobody is wrong or right in their interpretation.
I remember watching this film when I was younger, I was intrigued, and then afterwards I went to any swimming pool I could find with great expectations. Great film. There was another aspect of the mythology that I loved, the fact that there were false duplicates, it created a lot of tension, because finding the right combo of people before time runs out, it scared the shit out of me, once again, I was a child. Watching things from this perspective makes films beautiful, and that's how I've left it, I've never seen the film again, and it is still hauntingly beautiful because I left it there, I left it in the limbo of a vague memory and almost a dream sequence.
Chris, where is the Star Wars Episode IV Review?

Jonathan Alvarez Jonathan!
+Red Key Hello, alternate timeline Link!
+Jonathan Alvarez I thought his name was Zelda?
+Super Nakul Boss!!! *facepalm*
This is the movie that killed Shyamalan for me. I don't 'mind' the village, but this movie I really struggled to finish.
agreed first M. Night movie i started to hate badly and started to make shit movies.
Same here mate. I hate this movie with a burning passion. Seriously one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
+GibJen McHorse I was in denial after seeing this film. I kept believing, but then I bought it on DVD and I realized it was bad.
For me i gave on Shyamalan after THE VILLAGE.
+GibJen McHorse me too! Lady in the water was like a story your drunk uncle tells you at thanksgiving, that's like 9 stories in one also its half fiction and he lets slip out his sexual fantasies in there. at the end your horrified confused and speechless and just want to leave.
I, personally, love this movie.
I loved Lady in the Water.
someone else finally agrees with me lol
noel acevedo it's a beautiful story, I love this movie.
Me too. Loved it.
I can't say I loved it, but I did like it.
I love lady in the water. Story of hope 💪
I really hope The Visit is good. I'm rooting for M. Night because I really enjoyed most of his earlier movies.
What was that spirit movie called?
The Sixth Sense?
+Joshua Night's King The Visit is fucking AWESOME
+Chandler Bing haha that's funny
+Chandler Bing lol
You should analyze and review Donnie Darko!!!
RIGHT!!!!!
+Scott Siecinski Yes, an in-depth review! It's one of my favourite movies.
+Scott Siecinski yes yes yes yes
I agree!
YESSSS
man i don't know why people say M. Night Shaymalan it's consitered a bad director... i mean he made godly awful movies like After Earth and The Last Airbender but... he made Unbreakable, The Sixth Sense and Signs!!
+Leonel Castañarez
Yeah I'm among the many of us who never got what anyone could possibly see in "Signs", but I'll agree he made some good movies, and since almost every director had made some shit as well, the hate really does seem misplaced. He was just seriously over hyped and than suffered a just as seriously overgrown backlash, when it became clear that he's not the next Kubrick after all.
Leonel Castañarez "One good act does not wash out the bad; nor the bad, the good." -- Stannis Baratheon
No, but another good Shyamalan movie might help people further forgive the rough patch of bad movies he had. Not undo them, but put him back in peoples' good graces.
And now he's done SPLIT. Shyamalan is awesome again!!
Chuck Movies I know right?!
Bryce Dallas Howard looks like Dave Mustaine
Still waiting on the next Star Wars review.........

Please review "The Last Samurai"
Yes please
please up vote my comment so Chris can see it
+ador757 Agreed, also I believe Chris has said that "The Last Samurai" is one of his favorite samurai films.
+ador757 It's Dances with Wolves but in Japan.
+ador757 Please review "Seven Samurai"
Yeah. I'm one of those assholes who really likes Lady in the Water. The framing is exceptional and I was into the trappings of a really crazy fable story trapped in a modern apartment complex.
pineappleboyfilms How can you be an a-hole for liking something, a-holes are people who hate on it for no reason
me too! I loved how each apartment was decorated unique to that tenant and I loved the tenants, especially the guy who only worked out half his body as a way of comparing how far he'd progressed. And I love the idea that apartment dwellers -- who never seem interesting at all in your own apartment complex -- might actually be unique and special.
This movie still has a place in my heart. ❤️
pineappleboyfilms
It's my num1 Favorite movie and I don't care what any Muggle sais ;)
It blew my mind to realize the movie only had one person in it.
What I personally loved about this movie was the fact that you didn't know a whole lot about the blue world. It was supposed to be based off of Legends and stories passed down from generation to generation. It even said in the beginning of the movie Men had forgotten and could no longer listen. I found it pretty cool that you really wouldn't know how the blue world really was so you could leave it up to interpretation in your own mind. I watched this movie is a teenager when it first came out and thought it was absolutely amazing. To this day I still watch it and still cry when I watch the movie, because seeing these characters come together to see there is something more to our world than the mundane is just simply amazing. The cinematic score is superb, and even the quirky acting of some of these characters is on point. I feel like in order to enjoy this movie you have to really open your mind, if you're not willing to do that you're not going to enjoy it.
Personally, THIS is where Shyamalan's career began to go down both the drain and the rabbit hole
+Hank Hill Signs and The Village were ok films. Not good but not absolutely horrible. This was the first actual WTF movie he made
+Ben Wasserman Agreed. Signs and The Village were not as good as his previous films, but he at least made decent films.
After that, his work went straight down the shitter.
P.S: Nice profile pics, to the both of you.
+Chris Barbati Thanks
It's scary how much Shyamalan looks like a young Michael Jackson from the Thriller era. And by that I mean facially, not because he's black
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 thriller!!!!!!
+Evan Waffle indians are black brown white and oriental. In india shyam would be considered black
+Jason Black the eyes init
so glad im kinda white...even though im indian...but then im a big racist so...
Yuvi Singh Dont be harsh on yourself, you are a big bones racist.
Honestly, coupled with M. Night casting himself as a writer destined to change the world and become a martyr, it's hard to see the miserable film critic character as a good-humoured joke.
Truly...this film is an object lesson in how not to respond to criticism. Had he simply cast someone else in that role, he'd have not been seen as such a self-important jerk. It's amazing he couldn't predict how that would play out with the public.
I really enjoy how earnest and enthusiastic you are in your reviews. And your willingness to delve deep in the search of endearing qualities despite any "shallow apprehensions" you may have about the film. Keep up the good work, you earned yourself a subscriber!
The thing about this movie is that it's a bedtime story he told his kids. That's why there's opening narration and why it's so mystical and fantastic. He literally made this movie for his children.
I actually loved this movie. And his part. The moral is finding your true purpose and knowing that you can be something great, even if you come from nothing.
Review The Last Airbender, Chris.
He already did
Over There Not the same way as the other movies.
True, but there is really nothing new he could say. Everything that could possible be said about that abomination has been said a million times already.
+J Wizard Phoenix he has in the past. Thats why hes not doing it again
+J Wizard Phoenix B+
Once again, excellent review. This review (and many like it) is the reason you are my favorite reviewer. Thanks.
I've watched a few reviews of this film that go through the plot but no one says why Story's hair changes color. Can someone tell me?
Wow you really said exactly how i feel about this movie. Its so dumb at parts but I actually cried at one point because James Newton Howard's score was so breathtaking and emotional.
I love this film because of the originality. It always reminds me of the love and hate that role-playing games get. Keep up the great work.
hey chris... please could you make a video with your top10 soundtracks? just listened to the soundtrack of this movie (lady in the water) and realy liked it too!!
I've seen this movie numerous times and for me it has really taken on a character of its own. I enjoy the offbeat tone and the sort of freestyle "as if telling the story off the top of your head" flow that it has. And of course the music is just phenomenal. Paul Giamatti gives an incredibly earnest performance. The entire cast seems to just be letting loose and enjoying themselves and the movie itself is just nuts but I think that's what makes it fun. It's also incredibly heartfelt and sincere, and has one of the most beautiful final shots I've ever seen in a movie. Chris Martin of Coldplay said that the song "Yellow" doesn't really provide any deep meaning... but what it does do is evoke a feeling. Whether its intentional or not, some things just make you feel warm to your core and Lady in the Water is one of the few movies of which I can say that is absolutely the case, at least for me.
This film is meant to be a fairytale hence the beginning with the animated story... This is an understated film which is magical and beautiful and Paul giamatti is amazing. The hate for shyamalan is bollocks, the happening is the only truly bad film he's made and I personally didn't like after Earth. Stop being sheep and hating him just because everyone else finds it fun to mock him
I fell in love with the film because of that and it just breaks my heart that people hate this movie just because it's fun to ride the hate wagon for M. Night.
I just hope that this premise can be brought back and done better. Saw a comment on Nostalgia Critic's video that this concept, when adjusted, would be perfect for an Anime. Kind of like an Ah! My Goddess story but with Water Nymphs and Monsters instead of Goddesses and Devils.
Don't generalize my dislike for Shyamalan. A lot of people agreeing that he's a bad director doesn't mean that everyone who thinks that way is on the bandwagon. Most stereotypes have roots in truth. The guy just isn't good, and neither is this movie. In my opinion.
This movie is like a lucid dream to me. Very beautiful looking and an interesting story. I don't hate Shyamalan he just needs to focus more on the acting and writing.
+stephanie wasling
A lot of people hate him for The Last Airbender, and while I don't think anyone could have made a truly great single movie from a whole season of a series, at least not a movie as good as said whole season of the source material (just too much going on), he certainly could have done a better job. People aren't forgiving when it comes to things they love, they might be a little to harsh in such a case, but it doesn't mean they are sheepish.
Anyway I never loved a single one of his movies even though I thought the Sixth Sense was okay. I don't hate him but he doesn't really produce for my taste.
stephanie wasling the last Airbender
did u do one for Trainwreck that got deleted?
Well made, Chris! Appreciate the work you put in your Reviews
I saw this movie just once as a kid and got stuck in my head for years. I still have scenes that I remember with great detail. For me, all the weird things from it just made it much more interesting, it's very original and mysterious, I didn't mind the cryptic aspect of it. I really liked it.
I love Lady In The Water (and love M. Night), and thank you for being different and actually having a well-rounded review. As soon as you held up "The Man Who Heard Voices" (which I also read), I knew you would give a fair and just take on the movie. You're awesome. Subscribed.
Before Christopher Nolans next movie (not counting his short documentary) you should do a series on his older films.
These are: Following, Memento, Insomnia and The Prestige.
I would also enjoy a more in-depth review of Inception since your one from 2010 is really dated and, sorry but, not to good.
+NewoandMe Reviewing Nolan's work is completly unnecessary. You can just sum them up in a few words: Very good movies.
Very fair as ever, Chris. I really love how in your reviews you can talk about movies people love to mock and pull apart (see:signs) and unflinchingly show their good sides. it's very persuasive :)
I love these more in depth reviews, even for movies I haven't seen, they're always very interesting. Keep them coming!
I watched this movie when i was like 10-12 and it made me scared of grass at night lool
Miechiu 😂
same. I hated sprinklers toooo
Same
Thanks for doing this. I haven’t seen the film in years, but I really enjoyed it. Thank you for taking the time to read the book and break everything down. I hope this will allow others to appreciate this film for what it is and not tear it apart for what it’s not. I think it deserves more credit then it gets. As always thanks for doing what you do.
where you get your shirt Chris Stuckmann
I loved lady in the water as a kid and today I still love it. the mix of different people at the apartment complex is just great.
I loved this movie. And often rewatch it from time to time. This movie gives hope in times when hope seems forgotten. I think the movie can be easily appreciated by people who are empathetic, who is cynical by nature, but wants to believe their is still good in this world. I am happy to be amongst a few people who appreciate the movie for what it was. And not focusing on the fact that the director played a pivotal role.
anyway glad to find someone who appreciate this movie. It is emotionally strong, the tone and visuals are stunning, and the score is beautiful. I dont care if it has sooo many dumb scenes. it gets my heart.
None of them is black
Hey Chris now that your done with that series can you do one about Quentin Tarrintinos movies leading up to Hateful Eight?
Bryce Dallas Howrds performance was, I think she was wonderful. she did her best within small area provided by the script.
for most of the movie, Shes a faity tale character. and she just needed to look like one. and she NAILS IT.
and later when we get to know her better, the scene where she confesses her fear and gets comforted. when she becomes humane. she was, dare I say, FANTASTIC.
Dude, I really love the honesty in your reviews. I love this movie, this is one of my watch over and over movies. It's mostly because I can typically guess what's gonna happen in movies and as I was guessing with my first watch everything was wrong. At that point I had to shut my brain off and just enjoy the movie. I do agree with what you said about not feeling like the blue world was something that was real. I could never put my finger on what it was whenever I watch it, just felt like something was missing.
I thought this was a movie that should have never been made. It was wholly convoluted. I actually felt like Shyamalan just threw it together as if you're supposed to do a few bad films once in a while - so long as you keep working.
Thank you as always, Chris!
Have you done a review of all of the Cornetto Trilogy? If not, could you? I just watched all three of them not too long ago again and they're just so great.
I love the old reviews. I look forward to you doing more.
M. Night Shyamalan is a Legend
+Reverse SteveJobs Punished Shyamalan "A fallen Legend"
Once this film came out his films started to suck badly.
Was a legend
A legend as in people tell stories about when he used to be good
That's Adam Johnston's line
I'm only one minute into the video and had to stop to purchase that book. Lady In The Water is the most underrated movie of all time, and I can't believe there's a book about this. It's going to take decades for most people to understand the brilliance of that movie. Thanks already!
Me tio, i started looking but didnt found it anywhere.
This and Speed Racer are the most underrated. Though it appears Speed Racer is finally getting some credit.
Keep em coming man. More themed move reviews.
Hey Chris, i really enjoy Shyamalan too. Mostly for the cinematography. Have you seen Gaspar Noe's movies it would be great if you make a review of any of them.
you didn't say anything about the guy with one huge arm and leg...he was like quagmires character from family guy after he discovered porn
I think he was a symbolic representation of people who overuse certain strengths to the point of imbalance against many other important traits and abilities needed in life.
"Nymphs called Narfs" lollololollololololol
"Narfs" is the most uncreative name I've ever heard
Ursahhh
+Matt B Drawings I immediately think of Thundercats and Snarf & Snarfer going "Snarf snarf!" xD
You'd almost expect a "Narf" to be some kind of gnome or elf.
Narf is a deity of Nordic cosmology.
Pathetic how a-holes like you try to find a way to insult others at any cost. Trying to ruin other people’s enjoyment 😣
Hi Chris! Have you reviewed Pan's labyrinth??
Just one question: why is "Story" blonde at the end?
+Chris Stuckmann, you forgot his movie "Devil." Please do a review.
still waitin for a new hope...
I'm pretty sure he's already filmed it.
+HenRe West You mean the film or are you actually hopeless?
AHH! I was looking for this video by you a few days ago, but I could not find it. I'm glad to see you did it.
I actually enjoyed it.
Is there any chance you could do Christopher Nolan films the way you did Shymalan? I'm sure you've probably done almost all of them already though
do a top 10 most overrated movies ever
He loves all movies that are highly rated
new hope
where is it
A pleasure to watch Your thoughtfull reviews! It's the kind of reviews that make me watch, and appreciate movies I would perhapd leave aside! Adding to that the unpretentious presentation stile, without effects! Nice!
Since Bridge of Spies is coming next month... is it too much to ask for a Spielberg series review? I'd love to hear your thoughts on Munich - phenomenal movie!
I'm sorry Chris, but u are an absolute M. Night Fan!!!!! it really shows here.... Just because Night knows it's an absolute mess.... Doesn't mean it makes it better
Or maybe his films are flawless masterpieces!!!!!!!!
+Alex Styles I'm sure in some people's minds
i actually liked Lady in the Water. It's cool to see some ordinary people have some special purpose in their life
One of your fans, +Night Mind dropped your name. As a fan of his, I can see where the influences come from! Excellent review and analysis, Chris! I look forward to checking out your stuff! Don't worry though, I won't dig too deep.
This review has definitely made me want to watch Lady in the Water from a totally different perspective. I was surprised when you didn't touch on the most memorable part of the movie (for me), which was Freddy Rodriguez's character who only works out the one arm, then the amazingly cheeky shot of him in the rain. Truly the ultimate characterization of the duality of Man. ;-)
I always liked this movie. Loved it when I was younger. I can definitely see the flaws but I really loved the apartment setting/dynamics and the characters finding themselves in the story. Plus Paul Giamatti of course.
Oh, this movie! I actually remembered loving this movie. It was weird, but I loved it
The reason why I hated the stupid critic death thing in Lady in the Water wasn't because I can't take a joke, but because the joke was a) really stupid and hack - as you said yourself it's been done over and over forever b) incredibly self serving and, alongside casting himself as the hero, makes him look like an egomaniac c) it wasn't compelling in the slightest to me, I did not care about that character and his death meant nothing to the story.
I love the fact that you are so thorough and detailed with your reviews. It is Very appreciated. Wish I could do the same, but I am not very good at explaining stuff, with me its more like, Wow that movie was awesome. lol
Nice work as always. I love how into film scores you get :)
I only saw this yesterday and I loved it!! It totally went over peoples heads
goutham edara as most of his films do. It's a beautiful movie.
I don't think this went over anyone's head. It's obvious what the film is saying: critics don't know anything, Shyamalan's a genius, and children are pure and innocent and we should be more like them, the problem being that only one of those thing is even sometimes true. For a film about storytelling, it doesn't know how to tell one. It writes itself into corners and then Paul Giamatti asks the Asian mother and daughter to explain the magical exception to the rule that will let things move forward again. It's like writing a Superman story where Superman is tied up in Kryptonite chains while Lex Luthor is about to destroy Metropolis, only to suddenly have the voice of Jor El come in and say, "actually, if an eclipse happens on my son's birthday, kryptonite will become a life-giving power source...have I not mentioned this before?" and suddenly it's all hunky-dory.
@@Corn_Pone_Flicks I would say critics and children are on the mark. As for Shyamalan, I dont think he tried to say he is a genius lol. His acting seemed totally fine to me. If we watch it with open mind its not bad at all. At least not all the flak he gets
a. Imo the craziness of this story is what made it unique. I watched this film after the other Siamalan films that came before it. And the fact that they all had a revelation at the end, made me think that this time again, the story teller is effing with as throughout the whole time watching this. I expected to see a twist in the end telling us that all this was a joke or made up (like in The Village) and another part of me (the inner kid's part) begged for all this to be true and come ton an epic closure. Not revealing this fairy 'world/universe' at all, actually worked for me. Cause I did not know what to believe or how to view this film till the end.
b. The fact that 'Story' was an other worldly creature, a fairy of some sorts made the actress' performance even better in my eyes. Because it kept intriguing me. I could not connect with her while I wanted it so much! I felt like the main character of this film, who was willing to give everything to help her, without even knowing her.
Great videos Chris. You should totally do another series when you're done with Shyamalan. Maybe Tarentino or Nolan?
I've only watched about four of your reviews so far but I am so pleased and excited about how even-handed you are with a movie like this. I wanted this movie to be amazing so much and, of course, I was disappointed. Still, I enjoyed aspects of it and I appreciated Shyamalan's efforts. Thank you for being so thoughtful and for not taking a good/bad approach to the films you review.
Chris can you review Donnie Darko?
A NEW HOPE CHRIS!!!!
hey chris, i'd to suggest reviewing Tarantino's older movies leading up The Hateful 8 this december.
Can you do a review for the movie "No Escape"
Chris would you truly be this forgiving of this film if you didn't have such a nostalgic connection to the director? Honest question.
Great point. Ouch, that was a bullet!
Are you going to review Season 1 of Wayward Pines? M Night was the executive producer and it's very good, If I had to describe it, it's kind of like The Village, but MUCH BETTER. I would highly recommend it, thanks!
+MrSean I especially liked all of the references to the British, science fiction TV show "The Prisoner" from 1967.
I might watch it if I get time. How similar is it to Twin Peaks because the commercials put that vibe out.
+Tate Hildyard They definitely seem to be going for the same feeling, but I've never seen Wayward Pines.
If it's half as good as Twin Peaks, I'll give it a watch.
Excited for season 3 on showtime in 2017?
Tate Hildyard Absolutely.
Your work is awesome man...I follow it regularly.
A very good and thorough review. I might give this movie a shot just to see some of the better points.
Speaking of your statement about reviewing older films - have you thought about picking a director and doing a series of reviews of their films? My first thought is Andrew Nicol (Gattaca, Lord of War, The Truman Show) and Kevin Reynolds (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Count of Monte Cristo, and Tristan and Isolde). Would give you a nice variety and a chance to play on the nostalgia a bit.
