I was planning on using my DJI credit on it because I like buying drones, I thought I would be able to pay $339 without a controller but DJI in there infinite wisdom want existing customers to have a million controllers and I do not have a infinite amount of cash to give away to DJI. Plus all the reasons you mentioned and a few more it gets the flip not the thumb from me.
@@tanya4900 Prop guards look breakable, no removeable you would have to send it off to DJI, It looks like a flying Pontiac Aztek, DJI are wrong about its wind resistance, good to say? Would be a amazing selfie drone for $300 without the remote.
Couldn't agree more. It's not a bad drone, just doesn't bring a whole lot to the table for me -- one feature I didn't mention in this video was the interface with the DJI Mics systems. That's an incredibly useful feature for content creators who like to use their drones as automated dolly systems and want consistent audio across their content.
Why spend my flipping Mini 5 Pro money? Maybe, just may if the Flip is sold as a stand alone drone without the controller for $299 or less, then I may consider buying it. DJI already made us(me) buy the NEO, so! for now, I have ZERO intentions of getting the Flip. I'll be patient and wait for the Mini 5 Pro.
I didn't wait that long to see. I folded it down when I had the opportunity to use it and it stayed powered on for as long as I had it folded down into its storage/transport form. Possible I missed that though. You can imagine I was just so excited to be getting my hands on something prerelease that I was having trouble focusing lol
A real miss out of gate. I do think they'll implement RID broadcasting down the line somewhere, but until that happens -- this is an easy "no" from me.
I'm new to drone technology even if I watched the issue since DJI released the Spark. Wasn't convinced about the first Mini and decided to wait a few itteration. Was planning to get the X1 ProMax but the video quality seems subpar and lower the the Mini 4 Pro. X1 ProMax is also more expensive with all the accesories you need if you plan to use it on long distance motorcycle travels, as I plan to use my drone. So I got a Mini 4 Pro Fly More Combo with DJI's ND pack. Only got to fly it a few times because is very very cold outside, but overall I'm very happy with the purchase as although I have a lot to learn about manual controlling the flight, I'm gettting beter and better at it with each flight... and didn't even ventured in the preexisting automated flight modes. The Flip seems more restrictive for me because of lack of side and rear sensors. And I don't care if I have to press 2 buttons to start my drone. The Mini 4 will do a better job tracking my motorcycle as I'm rideing it on a gorgeous backdrop.
I'm glad to hear you like the Mini 4 Pro. It is currently my top recommendation for folks looking to get started with drones. Between the 360-obstacle avoidance, awesome camera quality for its class, and a pretty solid flight experience, you just can't beat it for the price. Not the least expensive "mini" drone on the market, but I always encourage people who save up $200-300 for a drone to just save up another $300 and buy something reliable. If somebody gets into drones with the expectation of it being a low-cost hobby...they're gonna have a bad time xD thanks for watching and sharing!
I thought I was going to make that purchasing decision, but I have since changed my mind when I saw all the reviews. One major reason is no remote id and then there’s no fly more combo with the drone and the battery hub and additional batteries. I don’t need another controller even tho I wouldn’t mind the RC N3 because I don’t have that one. Plus, the camera doesn’t rotate for vertical shots and I don’t have the mini 4 pro.
It seems that it can send the remote id if you assign it to some countries it starts sending it. For whatever reason its not turned on in the states guess some pressure is needed for them to turn it on.
good luck with that. It's NOT required in the US and recreational pilots don't want it turned on. Market pressure already pushed dii the opposite direction and why they changed the behavior of the mini 3 and mini 4 pro to stop broadcasting RID when the normal batteries are in use.
@@RebelByNature yeah maybe i should have pointed out its not a hardware issue the flip has been shown to support it. The if they will do it is more the issue. Thanks for the context.
@ I am aware. It's just a matter of because of the FAA rules, they can't make both groups of people happy (recreational and part 107 people) at the same time. Either it transmits RID and pisses off recreational pilots or it doesn't and pisses off 107 pilots. DJI approach seems to be produce different drones for different folks in this regard, or different versions of drones for different folks. This drone is meant for recreational pilots.
I have a feeling they'll end up sending a firmware update out that turns Remote ID on for the Flip. A few reasons, but chiefly among them is that the FAA and US government in general have made it clear that they don't really care all that much about the happiness of the hobbyist community. Their primary focus is to control the airspace as much as they can...which is the FAA's job, so I get that, but control means they're going to eventually implement something even more restrictive than Remote ID that will be mandatory and will likely make it even more difficult for people to want to stay involved at the entry-level. Not sure the timeline on something like this, but from what I hear a lot of it will start with Part 108, which is not what I originally thought it would be...it's shaping up to be something that is a corporate control on the airspace and will likely impact hobbyists and even 107 pilots in a negative way. Time will tell...
@@TheDroneGeek Anything beyond what the current law is is just pure speculation. I don't think it matters if the FAA cares about the happiness of the hobbyists. Current law says we are exempted from RID, not just the FAA rules. DJI and other drone makers want to sell drones, that is what they care about. The recreational/hobbyist market is orders of magnitude bigger than the pro/107 market. So, don't hold your breath about a firmware update for the flip that enable rid in the US. Have you seen them reverse the behavior on the mini 3 and mini 4 pro by firmware update back to always transmitting rid? The next version of rid and/or new federal legislation of drones is probably at least a few years away and as far as I am concerned, just about anything could happen and it wouldn't surprise me. I do agree it probably won't be good news for any of us.
I want it because it packs just enough punch for my bag, lol. I use mostly FPV so something I can toss up for camera drone style and it uses DLOG-M, for me, I have no need for more. Even my Mavic Air 2 is overkill for my use and I've been itching to replace it.
That's totally understandable! It's not a bad drone by any means, but I do think compared to other releases this one gives me fewer reasons to buy (or want to buy) it. I'll be interested to know how you like it.

All I see is a cheap alternative for a Mini 4 Pro or a nice beginner drone for people who liked the Neo features. The design, 'portability' and propellor noise are all reasons to skip the DJI Flip.
I agree. The propeller noise IRL wasn't too bad, but it's still louder than the Mini 4 Pro, so it went in the opposite direction in terms of advancement of low-noise propellers. And Jasper, I know you're using the word "cheap" loosely. That thing is absolutely overpriced IMO. Should have sold at a similar price-point to the Neo. I know we agree on that! As always, thanks for being an incredible source not just for the leaks, but also for perspective on the technology. You da man!

Same as you. It’s not appealing to me personally as someone that owns multiple DJI drones and uses them regularly for work. It should do well with people who don’t work in the industry.. mini 4 pro camera is solid, so thats nice they’ve included it and enabled it to produce high quality content by those who it appeals to.
@ Yeah! Or people with so much money, that they just like owning every DJI product cos it financially inconveniences them in no way whatsoever to spaff money on more fun stuff. 😅
Finally! Someone who actually owns many DJI products and is giving his real honest opinion about this new Flip'n release. Thanks for making this video Chris. 👍👍
I'll be the first to admit I love DJI -- they do it better than anyone right now...that said, they're not perfect by any stretch and this is one of a handful of releases from DJI that I feel missed its mark. It was made for a very specific audience -- entry level folks who don't want the headaches of registering drones and understanding how RID works. If you find yourself disappointed, it's probably because you're an intermediate or veteran drone user who has seen enough to know when a drone checks the right boxes or not.
I care about Remote ID because it would give me the ability to fly it (legally) over people. Complete miss on DJI's part with this one. They should have implemented RID onboard from gate -- would have got me to buy it. Instead, I'll pass. It's a good drone, neat features and a different design, but to call it a "great" drone is a disservice to drones that are actually great in their respective categories.
The Flip is under 250G, so no remote ID is needed for now. It is for people who don't have a DJI product yet, like newbies.
