      @@czgator9000 BO took forever to get their rocket airborne because they were supposed to be doing their homework and making sure the entire mission would be a complete success. SpaceX didn't waste time with guesswork and lit their candles to get real world data instead. It doesn't take SpaceX long to fix flight issues with iterative design, but with BO's method, it might take them many years before they're able to land this booster. If their goal wasn't to stick the landing on this first attempt and simply get something to orbit, then they don't have a leg to stand on when mentioning how many boosters SpaceX lost. This flight was 24 years in the making, while SpaceX has been launching stuff into orbit for 16 years at this point. BONG is almost irrelevant at this point.

  • @kevikiru
    @kevikiru 12 дней назад +47

    They really need to work on their connectivity issues! A lot of the excitement was dampened by the lack of video coverage. Apart from the launch cameras and tracking plane, we did not see views of the ascent from the booster, no separation, no fairing separation, just a messy view of stage two engine light, no views of entry burn, and no views of second stage in orbit.
    We have been watching these views from SpaceX for years, even before deployment of Starlink. This contributes to great views & excitement as well as publicity for the company. A comparable launch was Falcon Heavy in 2018, and you saw how much excitement that first launch generated, partly because we could see what was happening!
    Blue Origin has been having these same problems with their New Shepard for years. I mean, SpaceX had better views of Falcon 1 attempted launch in 2008!!!!!! And sure, they were not livestreaming to the public, but they could have coz the team was watching the stream.

    That clean blue flame reminded me of Breaking Bad. Those BE-4s burning that Heisenberg blue. The raptors must be a hair dirtier.

    • @Skinflaps_Meatslapper
      @Skinflaps_Meatslapper 12 дней назад

      Reminds me more of Cherenkov radiation seen in nuclear reactors. If unverified internet reports are correct, the BE4 is running more fuel rich than the raptors (possibly 3.3:1 vs raptor's 3.6:1, with stoich being 4:1), so in actuality the BE4 is "dirtier". It tracks with their efforts to dial the BE4 back from the edge to make it more reusable, as the closer you get to stoich the hotter the flame becomes and the harder it is to keep the engine cool. The raptors are blue at night as well, you just don't see them flying much in the darkness and that blue glow is overpowered by ambient light. Both engines have a blue flame that shifts to a purple hue further down the plume because of the excess carbon molecules from fuel rich combustion interacting with atmospheric oxygen, creating a reddish orange light. When this reddish orange light is mixed with the blue light, you get a sort of faux purple color down the plume. I say faux, because it's not a pure color but rather a mixture of two different colors as opposed to what a purple flame would indicate from flame testing/atomic emission spectroscopy of elements like potassium, cesium, lithium, or rubidium, for example. You can see the exact same flame color from a slightly fuel rich neutral bunsen burner, wikipedia has a pic of it that looks like a mini BE4/raptor plume. During the day, the blue light is not apparent and is easily overpowered by daylight, so the remaining orange color is virtually all you see during the day. IFT-5 was the closest that starship ever got to a night launch, so you can kind of make out that blue and purple plume, albeit faint. If you want to see better pics, check google for raptors being test fired at night. You should be able to see just how similar both engine plumes really are.

      Raptors are burning at 2.5x the pressure & are probably fuel rich to lower the temperature

    • @Skinflaps_Meatslapper
      @Skinflaps_Meatslapper 12 дней назад

      @ Both engines are fuel rich. The BE4's oxygen rich moniker refers to the preburner, not the main combustion chamber. What that means is there's a whole lot of excess oxygen coming from the preburner, and the rest of the fuel is injected directly into the main combustion chamber. The fuel ratio in the chamber of the BE4 (and consequently, the true fuel ratio) is more fuel rich than the raptors are. The raptors are oxygen rich, but also fuel rich...they have two preburners running on opposite sides of their chosen fuel ratio, so when both the oxygen rich and fuel rich preburner exhaust reaches the main combustion chamber, they combine to form a slightly fuel rich ratio. That's the magic behind full flow staged combustion and why they can deep throttle the engines so quickly. Even when running at a leaner ratio, SpaceX is currently using throat film cooling in the raptor by injecting additional fuel along the walls of the throat but are working to eliminate the need for it (it may be eliminated in the raptor 3, nothing has been said though). That film cooling is factored into the final ratio as well, so if/when they remove it, the final ratio will likely be even closer to that 4:1 figure.

      I think it is now a culture at Blue Origin to not talk when something does not go right. It's either the hosts don't know what is happening because they do not have engineering knowledge or they are forbidden from commenting something that is not on the expected notes until somebody senior tells them what to communicate. This happened with New Shepard abort a while ago when the hosts went quiet even when everyone could see that the capsule and booster had separated in an emergency. It was so weird!
