You know, lost behind RT's usual guitar/voice/songwriting brilliance and Danny Thompson's spectacular bass work is Michael Jerome's great drumming. All you need to know is that he is comfortably keeping up with (and in part driving) DT's breathtaking virtuosity on this rhythmically complex tune!
Danny is sublime. When I can pull my attention from RT long enough to pay attention to what DT is up to on the big bass I realize what a fantastic musician he is.
I have a recording of him doing this live in Louisville, Co. in 94 from KBCO. I saw the tour earlier in San Francisco with John Trudell opening for him. What a sublime evening.
This is exactly the kind of songwriting I aspire to. I thought great songcraft died with Warren Zevon, but this man is right up there in the pantheon of the greats.
@broadpath and @micheleVK - True That! Danny is one of the few bass players you can pick out just from his touch and tone. Very in touch with the people he supports.
Bass player is Danny Thompson (no relation) who was a member of Pentangle. Make the most of his double bass, though ... he's had to replace it with a touring version now due to damage during transport.
Good God Almighty!!! I was just "turned on to" RT during a performance in Austin back in March...wow!!!!!! ...and I thought Townes VanZandt had it all....hmm....
Richard and Danny Thompson, heirs to Savage Arms' fortune from the manufacture of the Thompson sub-machine gun: there's blood on their fingers, you can hear it in this work.
Oh, all right, then: this is such strong playing it astonishes and delights. What other artists have *created* such gruesomely beautiful consonance between the *form* of the music and the lyrics while in pursuit of such desultory and confessional ends? I mean to say, what other artists besides perhaps Frank Sinatra while at Capitol Records? And even that genius refused to go quite so dark in his work. Blah, blah, blah,
One of the most underrated musicians on the planet.

There is some justice in this world. I got to live long enough to discover this man's music.
RT is one of the most gifted singer/songwriter/players of our time.
Uniquely gifted, and always a pleasure to hear and watch.
I think that bass growl is the sound of an open E string being plucked quite hard, but whatever it is DT's bass playing is, as ever, astounding
Wonderful. Nice to see the great Danny Thompson on bass
I'm a big fan of Richard Thompson, but I love listening to Danny Thompson make his bass growl.
beast on the bass, and obviously the guitar
RT and Danny are the best in the world at what they do. Check out especially the bass growl at 0.39 and elsewhere. Brilliant.
Prodigeous talent, honed to perfection.
I adore Danny Thompson's Fretless bass playing backing Richard here. Absolute star is that Danny.
@MicheleVK Hell, yeah! Awesome upright bass playing! Devastating!
Danny is sublime. When I can pull my attention from RT long enough to pay attention to what DT is up to on the big bass I realize what a fantastic musician he is.
Oh yes. Danny’s playing is a great reminder of who the “Mingus” in the lyrics is...😉
Unbelievable - would love to hear LIVE
Sincere, massively evocative performer. Great emotional depth, and.. a gentleman, ...I might add. You must see him solo!
saw his concert in Canterbury last Sunday...fantastic!! he is the best! Judith Owen is very good too, great show.
WoW I have to have this now.
Man!! I love Richard Thompson:))
This is an awsome video!!! the mans a ledgend!!

This is so good - I'm getting the DVD.
Musicianship brilliant, all around.
danny thompson working back there...
This is exactly the kind of songwriting I aspire to. I thought great songcraft died with Warren Zevon, but this man is right up there in the pantheon of the greats.
The man is frigging brilliant. I have seen him a few times and have yet to figure out how he makes his guitar do the thing it does.
I was lucky enough to be at this ACL taping. Absolutely fantastic :-) !
Can someone please tell me- how does Danny Thompson get that growl? What a brilliant trio. They even surpass the supergroup trio of my youth, Cream.
What a cool voice he has.
Once upon a time there was video of him doing a long f**k all guitar solo version of ‘put it there pal’ live from Austin. Where’d that beauty go?!

That is a terrific video. Especially the five-string Shoot Out the Lights. I wonder if someone is going to put that one up.
It could be blocked,in which case, fair enough.
Damn this man is brilliant, I have seen him a few times, and I have yet to figure out how he gets his guitar to do those things.
stood in the poring rain to watch this sucker rock
Pedreau, was that at "Poor Dave's" in Dallas? I was there too. It was my first time seeing the guy. Incredible show. Smoke free too. What a bonus
This sounds amazing......damn
@broadpath and @micheleVK - True That! Danny is one of the few bass players you can pick out just from his touch and tone. Very in touch with the people he supports.
very nice
this guy rocks

Magnificent!
thank you!
AB FAB
Good God Almighty!!! I was just "turned on to" RT during a performance in Austin back in March...wow!!!!!! ...and I thought Townes VanZandt had it all....hmm....
Unbelievable
Title of the song is "Mingus Eyes".
Check out Paul Langille. A very fine guitarist and singer. More of his tracks are coming
What other comment could I agree with totally, while still wondering where I can get some of whatever you were smoking when you wrote it ?
yeah you can get the whole DVD here
livefromaustintx.com
i second that : )
Mingus Eyes -- it's on mirror blue -- but sounds even better here
Richard and Danny Thompson, heirs to Savage Arms' fortune from the manufacture of the Thompson sub-machine gun: there's blood on their fingers, you can hear it in this work.
Quote your sources.
I wonder if Mingus would have liked it.

is it my imagination or does he sound like Tim Buckley?
Not everything is subjective. Comparing Britney Spears with this guy? No.
Richard is Sufi Muslim - don't think Danny is, though...
Danny is Muslim too.
