Now please do every single other song he ever recorded
I want figure 8 from front to back with this treatment
Please this.
What this guy said
I'll have what he's having
They do a few more. "Happiness", "angeles", and a cpl more I cant remember
Elliott Smith was extremely important to me in my formative years as I dealt with a lot of trauma and learned to understand and cope with my mental health issues. I'm also happy to see the world hasn't forgotten about him. I hope they never do.
Same. When I put the most precious thing I’ve ever had into the ground I said “I’m never gonna know you now but I’m gonna love you anyhow.” When I started writing music i made goals of Austin City Limits, Grand ‘Ole Opry, and this rlly cool Cave venue in Tennessee. Only then will I play this song and it’ll be the first one I do. Shit always puts a knot in my throat.
Anyone who appreciates Elliott’s music is a good person I think. I like this guy, superb cover.
Neil well put😂
Chris Thile is phenomenal, which I say as a massive fan of ES.
Cant you tell, that it’s well understood 😅
I grew up listening and learning guitar from Elliott Smith. I wouldn’t say all. Technically, I’ve always been a good person but some of my actions def weren’t. Definitely have become a great person though!
May The Lord Keep his soul in His Light and Peace 🙏
glad elliott is still around in 2019
2021
elliott will always be around because legends can never die
@@concars1234 just wish his fans didn’t willingly watch him fade away on stage when he was alive. If someone is that fucked up, they need help, not applause.
@@krusher181 Well who can say what's part of the act? his later stuff is actually way less "sad sack". And apparently he was doing much better in terms of his substance problems at the time he died. Mind you, he died of a stab wound to the chest with no hesitation wounds which is very strange for a suicide. The case is actually still open technically I believe
2023
The Live From Here covers of Elliott Smith are such a remarkable act of love as expressed through music.
This is how we should respond to suicide: not with silence, not forgetting, not with euphemism or a glossy version of the person who is gone, nor a picture that is overly morbid; not with fake pity, or overreaching empathy, but with real love and admiration for what was expressed while they were with us, in all its complexity, ambiguity, and unreachable otherness; all its pain and all its beauty.
Elliott Smith's music and his life was a gift to listeners, to musicians and songwriters. He was one of our best. And I appreciate very much how these covers recall that.
This is why Elliott Smith is a genius, you can take any arrangement of his music and it will work.
Michael Isabella Dub Step???
WrinkledGhost dubstep doesn’t even work for dubstep
This thread has lame 2010 energy
@@Kedai610 yeah
I'm gonna say it, Chris Thile has done it again
You mean Elliott did it again ;)
This isn’t about displays of virtuosity, it’s about understanding, appreciating and interpreting one of the greatest musical stories of our lifetime. Well done everyone
@Xxaphius sorry I missed this and didn’t respond sooner. You’re wrong
"Oh, do we ever miss you, Elliott." Amen, Chris. Great cover.
Can’t listen to this song without crying. Thanks for such a moving rendition. RIP dear Elliot
Hearty sobs to this one
Its ok
Makes me so happy to know Elliott is still remembered. Without his music I don’t think I would have made this long.
Xo, brethren. Same.
To quote Ben Folds, "The songs you wrote got me through a lot". I wasn't aware of Elliott Smith's music until long after his passing, but his work has certainly helped me through some dark times.
I never knew of Elliott Smith when he was alive, but I love him anyhow. Rest easy
Slowly, surely, Elliott Smith's catalogue is going to seep into the global music lexicon, and the world will see that they missed the greatest songwriter of his generation while he was alive.
How do you all keep finding new ways of convincing everyone how cool this show is
A fucking masterpiece done right by Chris respectfully with certain love.
First time I ever understood that this song was about his mom and step-dad. And it has been said that his suicide was in part a cloaked message to him. It's amazing how long we can carry trauma.
performed with such reverence... simply wonderful
Chris Thile covering Elliott Smith. FAN. FOR. LIFE
I bet Elliott would have loved this.
Goosebumps around the "xo mom" lyric , the music quietens down to compliment the sheer heartache 💔
I never saw Elliott perform. Though part of me thinks if he had his way, few would have gotten to. Like countless artists, music lovers, conflicted youth, tired adults, and everyone in between... his songs get me through the best and worst times. Thank you for continuing his legacy and sharing his work with the world.
Michael McFadden isn’t it strange how incredibly comforting such sad songs can be.
I think whatever demon's Elliott struggled with, he knew himself quite well. After all, he graduated from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts with a degree in philosophy and political science in 1991. Who studies philosophy? I wish I had. Looks like he enjoyed some of his success but he did say "I'm not the kind of person to be really famous". He knew he wouldn't be able to handle the toxicity. That the media attempt to portray him as "sad-sack" (not my word) druggie when in fact, he was neither for what seems like a large part of his life just shows how lazy they are. His music is hauntingly beautiful. I hope more people discover Elliot for the beautiful human being that he was.
"From a Basement on the Hill" is one of the most powerful statements in music.
@@theohuioiesin6519 lol I listened to this to stop crying lmfao
So perfect from every angle. They pay tribute to all the subtle elements of the original song while still adding the solos and all so tastefully. Loved the violin playing the sliding string parts in the end. What a moving & incredible performance.
This might be the sickest cover I've ever heard
I just bought a Mandolin and randomly come across this piece of perfection.
There are 8 people in the world that need a hug. How can you downvote this??
Always love a surprise Elliott Smith song. This band nails everything each time.
Here today, and expected to stay - on and on and on...
Elliot Smith never wrote a bad song. This is very soothing. I wish the guy still was with us. The music is amazing. Brings tears.
Chris Thile always picked his songs for this show in such a reverent way. A true artist respecting other artists and paying tribute as such. What a cool dude.
Yep he was channeling some rare shakiness in his voice in the first bits of this awesome respective. Love it!
wow! devastatingly beautiful and haunting... have to listen a few more times... to dive deeper.... thank you I LOVE wanting to dive deeper.
Aoife is awesome too. Chris giving a nod to Elliott makes perfect sense. Elliot influenced a ton of people. Great songs.
Chris Thile reviving a classic Elliott Smith song, and he does it great justice!
it makes me cry. Unforgettable Elliott.
For those of us who never knew you Elliott, we still love you
Man, do I ever miss this show.
One of the greatest songwriters ever played by one of the greatest musicians ever.
Another great cover. Always impressed by the band's ability to cover such a diverse range of songs and to capture the feeling of each. This is a tough song to play live! What a beautiful song it is.
Sometimes the most tormented souls leave us the greatest musical gifts. Elliot, Chris Cornell. Thank you and sorry.
I listened to the encore performance tonight and it broke me a little. We love you and miss you, Elliott.
One of my favourites from E.S. This reimagining is sublime. Thank you!
Achingly beautiful.
I love the piano in this.
I can't believe this!!!!!!! This is so amazing! I love Elliott Smith and I really like how Chris plays the mandoline. I discovered him when I listen to his interpretation of Partitas from Bach 👌🏿
So very very good
So thankful to find out I can still be moved to tears by music.
It's a wonderful interpretation, a real homage to one of the greatest artists. Thank you for doing this.

This is one of the best covers I've heard
This came out of left field and hit very hard. Stunningly brilliant cover, the Mandolin sounds amazing.
Chris I've been following you for nearly 20 years, this may be my favorite vocal performance of yours.
Such a sad clever beautiful song and a beautiful cover, and superb playing from this band. Elliott Smith carried the torch of the Beatles - big call I know.
Dude's got one hell of a band...🦁✌

Beautiful cover of such an important song.
Now that's a beautiful song.

Wonderful !!!
Phenomenal rendition!
So beautiful. Did him Justice! Thank you
This performance is magificent....however, i felt an anger upwell. Ellliott Smith died too young and with a clouded determination. Waltz #2 is, truly, an example of a perfect song composition. Chris Thile, thanks for introducing this song to a whole new audienceQ
That was awesome
Beatufiul cover. Thank you so much for posting!
