Elliott Smith was extremely important to me in my formative years as I dealt with a lot of trauma and learned to understand and cope with my mental health issues. I'm also happy to see the world hasn't forgotten about him. I hope they never do.

Same. When I put the most precious thing I’ve ever had into the ground I said “I’m never gonna know you now but I’m gonna love you anyhow.” When I started writing music i made goals of Austin City Limits, Grand ‘Ole Opry, and this rlly cool Cave venue in Tennessee. Only then will I play this song and it’ll be the first one I do. Shit always puts a knot in my throat.

The Live From Here covers of Elliott Smith are such a remarkable act of love as expressed through music.
This is how we should respond to suicide: not with silence, not forgetting, not with euphemism or a glossy version of the person who is gone, nor a picture that is overly morbid; not with fake pity, or overreaching empathy, but with real love and admiration for what was expressed while they were with us, in all its complexity, ambiguity, and unreachable otherness; all its pain and all its beauty.
Elliott Smith's music and his life was a gift to listeners, to musicians and songwriters. He was one of our best. And I appreciate very much how these covers recall that.

And apparently he was doing much better in terms of his substance problems at the time he died. I think whatever demon's Elliott struggled with, he knew himself quite well. After all, he graduated from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts with a degree in philosophy and political science in 1991. Who studies philosophy? I wish I had. Looks like he enjoyed some of his success but he did say "I'm not the kind of person to be really famous". He knew he wouldn't be able to handle the toxicity. That the media attempt to portray him as "sad-sack" (not my word) druggie when in fact, he was neither for what seems like a large part of his life just shows how lazy they are. His music is hauntingly beautiful. I hope more people discover Elliot for the beautiful human being that he was.

Incredible how the sound of that Feb. 18, 1924 Loar just jumps right out of the screen every time Chris plays! (EVEN with no speakers!) If I'm not mistaken, Chris has 2 of the famous Feb. 18, 1924 batch, the serial number before, and after that of the mandolin owned by Lloyd Loar himself, although I'm not sure which one he is playing. And, yes, Chris is 100% correct about the modifications, the radius and 1/8 inch space job in particular, and to scoop the "Florida". Doesn't seem to hurt the sound one bit, now does it? The playability is undeniably increased. With Chris Thile's Loars, well, they will only be worth even more some day because he had that work done, which can stand to decrease the value and sell-ability if it were somebody else that had it done!
