    • @MrSpychecker
      @MrSpychecker 5 лет назад +45

      boymahina123 By the end of the war Japan had radar. However, at the start, they did not. Japan only started fielding land-based radar systems around the time of pearl harbour, let alone ship-borne systems. So at the time of Pearl Harbour, when the attack in this video was mounted, Japan wouldn’t have had any radar. In defence, the Prowler may have been useful in jamming radio communications between the Japanese forces.

      It's not used to jam radar, they are converted A-6E WCSI Intruder's. They are attack aircraft. They provided first generation laser guided bombs & missiles. Harpoon and SLAM missiles in that time both had similar guidance systems however WCSI SLAM equipped aircraft still needed a nearby A-6E to guide them...

      With the speed of a Tomcat, they could have easily sent in two or four, let them do a fly by across their decks at speed, and then leave straight up. The performance show would have left the Japanese wondering how they were going to go up against a force that can fly right up to them, cross over, and leave with such impunity.

      Yes, this movie came out 6 years before Top Gun! That movie had more emotion and whatnot, but this was pure naval power and tactics. Carriers, destroyers, Tomcats, prowlers, Intruders, Corsairs, Crusaders, Vikings, Sea Kings, Hawkeyes, most of which TG never had!
      And yes, Kirk Douglas was a legend. From Captain of the Nimitz to leader of the Romans (Sparticus), he lived more than a century, from 1916 to 2020. Rest in Peace sir.

    This was a really good movie (with not the nest dialogue writing or acting for the extras) but it was SUCH a huge disappointment when you realize you're not going to get to see any version where the officers in the Japanese carriers look up and see a flight of Tomcats and Intruders inbound, the flight lead calls tally ho on the flat tops and calls weapons free. What American wouldn't want to see that scene?

    • @saburusakai
      @saburusakai 9 лет назад +31

      bayushizero It's an RF-8 recon versoin, look at the forward fuselage, cameras, no 20mm. They were still usign them at the time, as it was a while before they got the recon pods for the F-14s Keep in mind that Carter was still pres (for just a litle longer thank God), and the Navy had their budget cut almost as badly as the current guy has done. The tires were probably worn out, like they were during Clinton's term whree I photographed one that would get your car pulled over if it was on your car. No parts, no tires, like now. The Nimitz was one of the few CVNs at that time that could actually be considered fully operational. No money for ops, kinda like now, with all three of our operational CVNs at any one time ouit of 11, much like then. The RF-8 did its job quite well though. THye do have ECM pods on the A-6Es though, which they would not be carrying , as there is nothing for them to jam. No SAMs, no radar, nothing. Still a great movie tho9ugh. I saw it in the theatre. loved it.

    Great stuff loved "The Final Countdown" as a kid (even if the plot of a nuclear aircraft carrier getting "sucked backwards in time" to just before Dec 7,1941 is a little hokey)! Douglas was in it, I knew then it would be a good movie and all this mess would be worth it...I was with VF 41 and jolly Rogers, our sister squadron, took all the action....felt kinda left out...but hey...that's Hollywood. Strange how Tomcats and Hollywood may be forever personnified by Top Gun, which was a Top Movie on its own for sure. But there was some great stuff in The Final Coutdown too. The story was appealing, the acting was good (Sheen/Douglas) and the shooting was very impressive. I would say the aero shooting was as good as in Top Gun, no less. Plus it was a great time to film with the Tomcats and other birds in high viz camo. I still remember the line about the "the time paradox" i.e. if you go back in time and kill you grandpa you cannot be possibly be born and thus kill him. Epic.

    Did you know the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier in 1980 had the biggest armed strike force for the last parts of the 20th century more than any other carrier? Here's what it had: McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantoms, Northrop Grumman F-14 Tomcats, Vought RF-8 Crusaders, Vought A-7 Corsairs, Northrop Grumman A-6 Intruders, Northrop Grumman EA-6 Prowlers, McDonnell Douglas EA-3 Skywarriors, Lockheed Martin S-3 Vikings, Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeyes, Northrop Grumman C-2 Greyhounds, and Northrop Grumman C-1 Traders for airplanes. Plus SH-3 Sea Kings and RH-53 Sea Stallions for helicopters. A total of 136 aircraft on the USS Nimitz, WOW!!! And they we're going up against 408 Japanese World War II airplanes which were Mitsubishi A6M Zeros, Aichi D3A Val's, and Nakajima B5N Kate's that took off of Japan's 6 World War II aircraft carriers! Thanks!

      no they weren't, they were up against a bunch of boats that had no hope of retaliating. they wouldn't have been up against hardly any airplanes. a token guard, but most of the planes would be getting outfitted for the attack on pearl harbor. the initial strike on the fleet would have occurred before they even knew jets were around. it would have been a massacre. Japanese didn't have advanced longer range radar on ships. the first salvo of missiles would have hit long before they had detected the planes.

      Split the task force. Send half to meet the attack as they flew south over Oahu to Pearl. The other half to where they knew the defenseless carriers would be, causing the Japanese to disappear in their own way. A senseless war would have been avoided. The future atomics could have averted to peaceful means.

      Brandon Bryant Their lighter armored ships won't stand a chance, but it actually takes quite a bit of ordnance, even modern ones, to sink something like a battleship. Disabling it is much easier though.

    • @Avofan
      @Avofan 7 лет назад

      Brandon Bryant accepted the A-6s couldn't do much outside of Aerial Refueling.

    • @engared
      @engared 6 лет назад +1

      Battleships were built to take an extended amount of punishment from larger munitions. It would be extremely difficult to sink, even with modern anti-ship missiles. Modern anti-ship weaponry is built to evade defenses and destroy lightly armored ships; not to penetrate the extremely heavily armored citadels of battleships. And even if penetrated, the battleship could stay in the fight. It would take hundreds of missiles or more to sink a battleship.
      The best thing to kill a battleship would be a torpedo, which was always the battleship's weakness. But as far as I know, air-dropped torpedoes are a thing of the past.

    • @engared
      @engared 6 лет назад

      Yeah with air-dropped torpedo and air piercing bombs; both of which modern missiles are not built to do.
      Also, depends on the type of battleship; the battleships sunk at Pearl were mainly WW1 era Super Dreadnoughts and not "modern" Battleships like the Nagato, Iowa, South Dakota or Yamato.
      The armored citadels were built to resist 16 inch shell fire and keep on fighting. A 16 inch shell hit has way, way more KE than modern aircraft dropped anti-ship missiles. At the moment, there are no more anti-ship torpedoes in service; which are and have always been the bane of Battleships. Battleships are extremely top heavy so damaging or creating unequal buoyancy has always been the way to sink them.
      Tanks are a completely other matter. What you are talking about seems to be HESH effect and modern spal liners prevent HESH from creating spall shrapnel from wrecking the crew. Modern tanks have a mix of armor in order to defeat HEAT rounds and Kinetic energy penetrators. The rule is generally a super dense material to defeat KE and ceramic/mixed material plates to defeat HEAT.
      Battleship armor does not work at all like tanks. Completely different philosophy.

So what were the two carriers that would have been inbetween these two carriers . Those carriers would have been CVN 66 & 67 . Does anyone know their names ???? Please anyone answer this question. I would really like to know. Thank you.
