Very good information here. Thanks. I had a number of foot wounds after wearing new shoes which got worse and wouldn't heal. I used sugar and honey which seemed to clean up the wounds, but in the end antibacterial powder completed the healing.
Dr. Pelto, your information is very clear and useful. My foot would is caused by a 3in needle I stepped on. The circumstances aren't important but the area of the needle insert is., It is on the right foot. the needle went in one inch below the smallest toe. On impact, I gasped, sat down on the floor which was a feat of balance but I managed to sit without putting any pressure on it. I was able to remove the needle by holding down the outer part of my foot and pulled the needle out. No blood on the needle and then I pressed down and no blood came out. This happened over 10 years ago. Operations on this foot were performed by 3 doctors and the wound has not healed. At present I am soaking my feet in warm water with epsom salt, tea tree oil and I have used vinegar soak and then wrapped my foot with duct tape. Only temporary relief. Today, it is really bad the pain is "off the charts" meaning I cry alot because of the hard pain . O I have inserts in my shoes that do not help. Can you suggest anything natural for my discomfort ? I am also using aloe and baking soda which is messy and I just want to have this would heal. I sure hope you can advise me. Thank you very much.
I saw several videos touting the great healing ability of regular granular cane sugar after applying it directly to difficult Diabetic wounds. Surprisingly.....this has worked quite well for me. Worth a try in my opinion. After you research this to confirm that this is a viable wound healing technique.
Spot on. thanks for the information. Wish I was told this the first day I went to the DPM and was told i had a diabetic ulcer on my big toe. He took an x-ray, gave me an antibiotic and some toe foot doughnuts for off loading and said it should be healed in a week or two. came back in two weeks and the hole was almost closed. He said it should be fine....However it never closed it just kept weeping and draining. Boy was he wrong. No boot, no wedge shoe, no real explanation about how devastating bad neuropathy can be. My tissue was a crushed skin meat between the bone and my callus on my big toe. The tissue was necrotic and needed to drain and such. Not just a cut or a blister which is what it looked like. Cuts and scrapes heal. Crushed tissue needs to be expelled before it can heal. The foot end of your toe is a really difficult area to heal even in a normally functioning person. Had no idea how much walking on it will not allow it to heal. I also have pretty severe neuropathy which cause autonomic changes to the tissue preventing the tissue to be supple. Instead it becomes hardened and cracked. Not to mention the muscular weakness and bio mechanical instabilities caused by neuropathy The neuropathy is like the perfect storm when it comes to destroying your feet. I am embarrassed to say it has been over two 1/2 years of dealing with this. I am going weekly as needed to the 3rd DPM who seems to have a handle on this. Jan 2019 MRI showed no bone involvement...Oct 2019 MRI was positive for Osteomyelitis in the distal toe bone. Bummer. Because...I don't really know why. I could go on but as of today it is real close to being healed. March 2020 after 10 weeks of oral antibiotics specifically following tissue cultures to pick the correct antibiotic the MRI came back much improved ie no more infx. YEA! hopefully. Six x-rays since October comparative studies show no further bone loss either. YEA! All the redness and swelling has resolved. Yea! Blood flow has never been an issue and blood sugar could be better but my A1c which was 14 at the time of the injury is down to 6-7 for several years. I am not fat with BMI of 24% from 34% two years ago. I was thinking of getting an infectious disease consult for an IV pick since it still seems to be weeping a bit. My DPM says it will weep until it closes. Doesn't mean the infection has not cleared up. The repeat x-rays have not shown any bone changes at all. I will give it another 4-6 weeks of really good offloading and nutrition and self care with collagen powders. It is really close to closing. My current DPM says I have good motion flexion and no joint locking when I walk in my big toe and doesn't feel I need to have any release procedures I am 59 and in pretty good health No arthritis or anything like that I think at this point it is again back up to me. Being and staying 100% compliant. Yes it has been a challenge to say the least.
No. 4 is for rich people. I am 76 with spinal cord deficits that largely reduce sensory acuity from the waste down. I have edema on my left leg and foot that apparently made me vulnerable to foot ulcer, and I didn't know that. Every test has come back negative for diabetes. But people still have to make trips to the bathroom (for me more frequently than pre-illness) and to bathe, have a life, etc. But, I found what turned out to be most welcome news and what has helped in getting my heel ulcer to heal over is OTC hydrocolloid dressings from the pharmacy. I have been putting some bag balm (mostly a petrolatum, lanolin base) on the dressings and the wound, and holding the dressing securely in place with surgical tape. Its the pain for me. The wound is located under my inner ankle on my right foot, so i only wear crocs because any other shoe pushes on the wound and causes pain. I got my blood work done and im not diabetic. I was a truck driver and ate poorly until October of 2022. Dr. Pelto, I stepped on a 3 inch needle over 10 years ago. After stepping on it I was scared but had to do something to get it out. The wall phone was out of range for me to get to, so no call for emergency. I had carpet on the floor and did not see it so there I was with a needle stuck in my foot and no way to seek medical help. After the shock of this intrusion in my foot, I sat down carefully and held down the area surrounding the wound and slowly pulled it out straight up. I pressed on it and no blood. Oh my was I scared but at least it was out. No blood. I pressed it again and no blood. Okay now what do I do? I washed it off and put my sock back on. I did not have a foot doctor so I asked a neighbor and was given a phone number. I made the call and an appointment was made. I kept my foot clean and limped out of the room but not doing a normal walk. Long after that day I have seen several podiatrist and have had numerous in office and in hospital operations. I am limping still to this day. Hurting, painfully walking. The wound did not heal and no blood comes out no puss nothing. just pain. Is there any ointment, oils or something can heal it within and without so I can walk normal again? And if you are wondering how intense the pain is just know that I cry very often several times a day because of the pain. I sent this to you hoping you might offer some info about my situation with this puncture wound that won't heal. I thank you for any response.

My foot wound isn’t healing after a month. There is little yellowish fluid coming out but not significant. The wound is on the right side of rhe anke. I still on antibiotics and it hurts. My feet is not swollen but only around the wound. The wound is about 2 inches long. I wasn’t able to rest it due to work etc... test for MRSA is normal and I’m not diabetic. Is healing very slowly ans I am concern. Now I got a referral to see a wound care management. Why it hurt so much after one month?

This is exactly what happened to my Brother. Like a lot of men, in his 50’s, he thought he had a callous on the bottom of his left foot. He would go and get it shaved down. The Summer of 2021, he got a sore on the jawline of the right side of his face. I noticed it was not healing and I implored him to go and see his Dr. He informed that he did not have one. I told him to Google Docs in his area and to make an appointment ASAP. He found a Dr taking new patients, but it was too late. He was diagnosed as a diabetic and at the same time, his left foot erupted with a terrible infection. My Brother had gangrene so bad that his left foot had to be amputated below his knee. They did everything they could to save his foot. The debridement they did took all of the flesh off of the bottom of his foot. I was there the morning after they did the debridement and it was like looking at a war wound. They ran an MRI and the infection was already there his bone, so the foot had to go. Two days after he had the surgery to amputate his foot, my Brother went into cardiac arrest. If he was anywhere but the hospital, he would not be here today. They saved his life! Now my Brother has broken bones in his right foot and he is wearing an Ortho boot similar to what the Doc describes here. He will have to have his right foot fused and even then, after spending months off his feet, he may end up losing it anyway and he’ll end up a double amputee. I worry about my Brother so much. He is now in his early 60’s and his struggles are real. Heed what the Doctor is saying in this video and take care!!!
I been having a really dry spot on my elbow for years n last month at work I hit my self n it peel like a little dot and it look deep inside but a pink skin well in a month it didnt heal I put alcohol and clean it and bought a cream for skin problems it got works now is wider and is wet all the time I clean it every day I'm scared it can be cancer :( or worst my doctor never listen to me when it was close and simple to treat any advice?
shavingculture go to a better doctor who will actually listen to your concerns. Not to sound like a dick but you are hiring your doctor. He gets paid to help you, and if he isn’t he needs an evaluation, and you maybe need to tell him either listen or I’m going to someone who will.
I used this product that is sup to remove dead dry skin. Its a plastic sock that is sup to contain moisturizer and it claims to make your feet soft again. It gave me massive blisters. Deep like nothing I’ve seen in my life! My entire toe was a massive blister. I left it alone, but it eventually broke and i was in shock, i had no idea it was that deep This is a massive hole in my toe. I’ve been using prescription antibiotic creams ( with 3m wound filler No change I swapped to medicinal honey It seemed like it was going to help, but it stopped 6 mos later i still have a massive hole in my toe! I keep it taken care of, moist and wrapped. By luck, I’ve avoided infection, however how long can i go on like this!

Are you Okay now

Why won't my leg ulcer heal
Kind of complex I have some information here if it helps www.drpelto.com/ulcer
Try insoles called Podophylus. Totally worth of it, I got rid of my suffering.
Two days after he had the surgery to
amputate his foot, my Brother went into cardiac arrest.
You're so abrasive in giving your advice.
Sorry you think so just trying to help
I am so scared 😭😭😭😭
Same 😔
I can’t stop panicking....
Me too !!!!!!!!!
Yes doc i have sore and cuts all over my feet, there also is black hair coming out of soresand i mean lots of black hair
im scared my mom has a feet wound ....
Sorry about that
I used this product that is sup to remove dead dry skin. Its a plastic sock that is sup to contain moisturizer and it claims to make your feet soft again. It gave me massive blisters. Deep like nothing I’ve seen in my life! My entire toe was a massive blister. I left it alone, but it eventually broke and i was in shock, i had no idea it was that deep
This is a massive hole in my toe. I’ve been using prescription antibiotic creams ( with 3m wound filler
No change
I swapped to medicinal honey
It seemed like it was going to help, but it stopped
6 mos later i still have a massive hole in my toe!
I keep it taken care of, moist and wrapped. By luck, I’ve avoided infection, however how long can i go on like this!
Sorry to hear
