This was a great trick to remove a rusted wheel bearing hub. I have a 2005 GMC 4WD Sierra. I beat on that thing for 4 hours with no results, tried heat and a air hammer and nothing happened. Used this power steering as a hydraulic press trick and removed the hub in a matter of minutes. Only tricky part is getting the socket and extension wedged in just right so it doesn't pop out. You are a genius! Thanks for posting this online.

Do you put the socket all the way inn the back and tighten it?

Well buddy, I had to leave a comment to thank you for this video!
Last night I was heading home to replace my hub (2007 Silverado z71). Turns out- it was in MUCH worse shape than I thought. It started coming apart, and I had to pull over and replace it on the spot (or call a tow truck- or find someone with a truck to go home and get my trailer).
Anyways, I popped the wheel off, pulled the caliper off, popped the hub bolts off- and yup. It was stuck. I tried the "putting the bolts half way back in and hammering it" trick, and the "put the wheel back onto the hub and kick the outer edges of the wheel" trick. No dice. Heated it up- didn't budge. WD-40, a lot of hammering, prying, kicking, and still nothing.
My girlfriend- who was nice enough to come meet me for moral support (and that 19mm socket I just so happened to leave out of the set), decided to search for a trick to remove this. Of course, I was too stubborn to look myself because I'm a know-it-all (or at least thats what I like to believe). Yours was the first video to pop up.
3 minutes later I was holding the hub in my hand.
So thank you. Saved me any more future back problems and possibly a tow bill. You're the man!

Cool so because u didnt specify this is front hub bearing applicable only, I ended up sawzalling my front knuckle off, sawzalling my rear knuckle off, welding the rear knuckle to the front end to use this method of getting it out. My problem now is my blades are too dull to cut through hardened weld.

Bad acting aside, this tip IS priceless and I wish I had known it before doing my bearing a few years ago. To others: that rust/corrosion ring will resist big hammers, big torches, pullers, and strong language. DO NOT USE a regular jaw puller as all it will do is drive the axle into differential.

Oh my god this is absolutely ingenious. This saved me BIG TIME on my girl's Grand Cherokee. Didn't even fire up the engine for the power steering boost ... just a bit of cranking on the wheel and the rusted wheel hub came off with a satisfying crunch. God bless you.

Thank you so much, this saved my bacon. I have a 2000 F150 with 250 000 km through salted roads 6 months of the year. Haynes manual said to tap it from side to side... wouldn't loosen even with a 10lbs sledge.
This popped it loose enough to get a pry bar in between the bearing and knuckle.
I had a hunch you'd have a tip for this situation when I saw your newer posting for wheel bearings, so I scrolled down through your list, watching the ones that grabbed my attention, and found this one!

Ha ha! He's a lot like how I used to be. At the time I didn't understand or value the raw power of tact and diplomacy. I feel he's inappropriate as far as delivery goes, but his feedback couldn't be more honest and sincere as per his perspective. It's hard to buy feedback like that. In reality I've had a tremendous number of comments that say I'm funny, vocally dynamic, and easy to follow and understand. I've narrated and done public speaking most my life and received nothing but compliments.

If you're replacing front wheel hub. I just used a steel bar and wedged it to where it was against the hub and a sturdy spot on the truck, turned the steering wheel while someone hammered and it came off like a breeze. and that shit was sealed on there good! this video helped me think of that solution so hope this helps someone else!

You, and JamieJones TheCarMan (who used the same idea), just saved my repair. I had the whole steering knuckle off and was going to remount it and try this. Then I thought "the trick is reattaching the _bolts_." So I reattach them, hold the whole assembly in the air, and pound on the bolt heads with a hammer. Hub assembly popped off and almost hit my foot! :D Thanks!

@zxtenn It has to do with how weak inner tie rods on R and P's are and also on how strong the mounts are. If you do it with a rack and pinion it will destroy your inner tie rod by bending it. And if that doesn't bend your rack will snap at the mount.

There was not enough force with engine off, so I had to turn the engne on to activate the power steering pump, and only used the bottom bolt , the hub has 4 bolts but the 3 are far from any hard or sturdy metal parts. I got scared doing it as I might break something other than what I wanted. :) THANK YOU!

Just last night I changed a severely rusted in place wheel hub assembly in an 02 Grand Caravan. Little hammer, no go, sledge, no go, deformed the outer hub pretty severely, and loosened the bearing inner race up until it was floppy, but the outer was stuck fast. Torch, no go. I worked on it with an air chisel untill my chisel tip was flattened out, probably went through 200 gallons of air, no movement whatsoever. I ended up using the air chisel to knock out the inner race completely and all the seals, ball bearings, and all that and I reduced it to nothing but the outer race, then I spent about three hours on the die grinder cutting out a notch in the race, just until it was through and a narrow separation in the steel could be seen in the steel, all the way across the race and down the flange. Even with a notch it took another ten minutes with the air chisel to collapse the race and drive it out from the back. After I brushed out all of the aluminum oxide from the cavity, there wasn't even a perceptible grinder mark on the inner face of the steering knuckle. With care, you can cut though the steel and not damage the aluminum. It's a slow process though. In what I've seen in my research for this, in some cases, even a 20 ton hydraulic press won't touch this kind of seized up bearing race. Don't make my mistake and buy a used car from a northern climate.

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  12 лет назад

No. It will damage your inner tie rod ends. You don't have to pull your hub. Just knock out the affected wheel stud. I have a vid on that. You can replace just the wheel stud.

"Cut the ball joints half way between top and bottom and then you can put it in the press.- sometimes even an act of God won't get'em out." He also mentioned that some Anti-sieze compound should be in there from the factory. So go ahead and do that once you get the new hub in there. Wish I could be there to help you. GOOD LUCK! Brian, I've had wheel hub bearing assemblies so seized into the steering knuckle, a 40 ton press would not press it out... it began to distort the entire steering knuckle. I was left with no other option but to cut them out. I've never used this option that you clearly demonstrated(not because it won't work, but when I've invested a large sum of cash on tools, I just won't risk destroying an extension, unless its an 'el cheapo')

@CTcarguy1 At this point I would torch the ball joints so you can remove the knuckle. This would facilitate putting it in a large press. I would also "phone a friend" at a local heavy equipment repair facility and seek advice maybe even before that.

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  13 лет назад

@CTcarguy1 Use your power steering to press it out. It WILL WORK. I've done SO many of them that wouldn't come with a torch but would come out using the socket and extension and then turning the steering wheel with the engine rev'd up to 1500 rpm's.

Thanks Matt! What's funny is I speak higher than my natural voice so people aren't afraid of me and I'm not too loud.- he speaks lower than his. Growing up I was always getting shooshed for being too loud in just my normal talking voice so I just tried speaking higher- it worked.

@davidhsing Nope. It's no worse for them than turning your wheel against the curb. You'll find that trucks, vans, and SUV's that get stuck really bad like this tend to be the ones that have beefy steering components to match. - great question by the way.

I used this technique on my 94 Jeep Cherokee after hours of banging and frustration. Loud crash that is super scary when the hub finally breaks free. It takes nerves of steel, which I didn’t have. But it worked. Thanks.

Just thought I'd chime in on this too. Your videos are great man, with your help I changed the T-belt, plugs, etc in my '03 Outback and it looks like I'll now be swapping an axle soon too (good thing you've got a vid for that!). You want to mix things up and have a little fun with your videos? More power to ya buddy - you offer an invaluable service for the crazy cheap price of a few seconds of my time to watch an ad - and that rocks. Keep on keepin' on brother and thank you for your help!

AMAZING idea Brian- I am doing my 96 ZJ and just bought some bolts at lowes to thread in and hammer on to get it out that way- I have NEW Mopar 13 MM 12 point knuckle bolts due to serious rust and was lucky to even get them out

I've struggled for a day on trying to remove the hub on my L200. Will try this tomorrow and will let you know how I get on

@aode06 Damn! What state are you in and what vehicle was it? I've only used it on vehicles with a steering gear box. I'll make a note! Thanks!

Thanks, this really saved me. I soaked the hub in Really Good Sh*t (better then PB Blaster, wish I could find a supplier for it) and then tried beating on the bolts with a socket on them for over an hour and got nowhere. I was about to take the torch to it when I found your video.

I live in the winter saltwater rust belt. The power steering press routine didn't work on my 2001 Ram 3500. I had to separate the ball joints from the steering knuckle. Then I used a cutoff wheel to chop off about 1/2" of the top ball joint threads to remove the steering knuckle. I was finally able to remove the axle and u-joint from the axle housing.

I am stuck right there with the same job, brilliant solution!
I have even used a cutting torch to heat it, no movement. Thanks!

Well, I didn't feel too smart after spending half a day on it. but just before I finally almost gave up and went to the auto parts store, I had a brainwave. I attached an adjustable receiver bar I had with the ball out, to a wheel bolt, and put the chevy's wheel jack against the knuckle and cranked. Not sure how to post a pic, but basically you have to create an extension of the hub so you can push it with the jack. Worked. Took about 10 minutes. Could have saved myself a lot of time....

Awesome: This method worked like a charm on my 04 canyon 2WD. I had the frozen wheel bearing assembly off in 3 minutes by myself, with no damage!
