This learn Kannada campaign is aimed at everyone who is staying here for years and still refuse to learn basic Kannada to converse with Bus conductors, auto, cab drivers, vegetable vendors. This includes Malayalees, Tamilians, Telugu people, Bemgalis, Gujaratis, NE folks and North Indian people. But only North Indians find offense in this and go on counter attacks. Not seen this from people from East, West or rest of south.

I am staying in Bengaluru for more than 20 years. I can speak and understand Kannada. It took me more than 4 years to learn Kannada.
Before that, I used to come to Bengaluru to visit my friends or relatives, and used to stay here for max 3 months. That time, I didn't know Kannada, and nobody treated badly to me.
I have seen both the coins.

With north indians if it's heads i win, if it's tails you lose. If you are in north you should learn hindi coz you are in north. If they come to south you should learn hindi coz they have come down south 😂
I am a Tamil speaker so today I feel a need to dispel this myth. Hindi is not mother tongue of any people except two thirds of people in MP, one third of people in UP and half the people in Delhi.
Reality: no matter how good your Hindi is, you will not be able to understand Dogri, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Maithili, Angika etc. if you have not lived among these people.
They are already trilingual, and adopted Hindi just to connect with each other.
Bihar and UP are states that are very diverse in terms of culture and language, while Haryana are Punjab are states sharing more or less similar culture with different language.
The question between north and south is not about language but about ideology: south indians define their identity based only on language and endorse linguistic states, north indians define identity based on local culture, geography and tradition and do not consider language as a major factor to their identity.
The ideological disparity has come purely due to political circumstances but with some understanding it should be obvious that no land can be the permanent property of any group. Languages change even between families depending on region...your family cannot be built solely on this. That's why north indians cannot understand why south indians do not want to adopt a common language.
However there are many perspectives on this matter and all of them may have a point.
In the end, we have to respect the fact that ideological differences exist....so there's really nothing wrong with north indians in karnataka. I always appreciate that you will always find north indians everywhere in India, whereas kannadigas anywhere north of maharashtra are so rare that even the census doesn't know of their existence.

If all those MNC companies shifted overnight to Gurgaon, Lucknow or Noida, the talented Tamil, Malayali, Tulu, Konkani, Kannadiga, Telugu employees would mostly not opt to relocate, whereas those north indians will. See, people know this, they are in Bengaluru because this is the only place where they can get a very diverse workforce together in one building. In other words, they are in Bengaluru to help locals of Karnataka and areas nearby to Bengaluru, not the other way round....

I think everyone misses the point. No learns language unless it’s a mandate. Learning a language takes time and effort, and for a software engineer learning a new computer language is more beneficial. However, a shopkeeper quickly picks up the local language as it brings that person more profit.
Also south India think everyone from outside is a North Indian. But surprise! most Indians don’t speak Hindi. My mother rarely knows 2-3 words of Hindi and I am still made fun on missing genders while speaking Hindi.
I know I might always be outsider. I was an Outsider in Odisha although I spoke broken Odia, I was outsider in Hindi speaking state even with my Hindi. Bangalore is no different. Just don’t be aggressive about it.

As a non-kannadiga I find this aggression for regional identity quite disturbing. There is no problem in standing for your native language. It is Great! But then if the goal is to protect the language, ban the use of every other language in Karnataka, including English. Why are our offices working in the colonial language? Europe, China, Japan are all working in their own languages. Also, stop sending your children to English-medium schools. Kannadigas are demanding every north Indian to learn Kannada. I don't have a problem with people learning languages but why would a non-kannadiga value Kannada if the language is itself not valued by the locals at work? Similarly, since when did speaking an official Indian language like Hindi become problematic in our own country? And btw, not every north Indian's native language is Hindi. There are Maharashtrians, Gujaratis, Punjabis, Kashmiris, Pahadis, Haryanavis, Bhojpuris, Maithilis, Bengalis, Oriyas, Assamees and not to forget the people from north east. They all are using a common Indian language they are aware of which is Hindi. I find that the most logical thing to do. If south Indians had a common language they would've done the same thing. Will Kannadigas learn the native languages of each state they settle and work in? Highly unlikely.

How many people even send their children to Kannada-medium school? That is the state of every Indian language unfortunately. Also, correct your information on China. There are 3 languages spoken in China, not just 1. North Indians are similarly using "A" national language "Hindi" (There are 22 national languages in India FYI) instead of a foreign language like English. Similar to English, Hindi too knits many regions of India without making us forget our native languages. That is why we learn it in school. As I said, there is no common language of south India. Had there been one, we could have debated about its inclusion in the school.

I don't seek any benefit out of Karnataka, I am only against agressive regionalism and forcing fellow countrymen to "respect" the local language. Instead incentivise them by making a rule to only use Kannada at work. Push for kannada-medium schools. Set an example for the rest of the country.
As an non-kannadiga residing in Bengaluru, I urge everyone coming here to learn and understand Kannada as well as respect their culture and customs. It’s the best respect we can give it to this lovely place.

I think what media is doing is showing that 0.01% people of Bangalore as 90% of them like that. I deal with non-locals everyday, and I have no problem in communicating in Kannada, Hindi or English. But what media is doing is over exaggerating the problem which actually doesn't exist.

We people of karnataka when we travel out of our state, we as much as possible try to communicate in their language, so we too do expect even if not completely but atleast the basic Communication.
Nowadays ive seen more vehicles of other states reg'd on my way to work. And they are the ones complaining about the traffic.
But I don't support if someone gets violent or harass just bcoz the other doesn't know how to speak kannada. That's not the way, may be teach them a single word that's necessary at that moment.
And humble request to people who come here n stay here start with learning from small things.

Problem is not because you can't speak Kannada. Problem is when you demand from Karnataka people to learn and speak to you in Hindi. The arrogance behind expecting Kannadigas to bow down to your comforts and demands is where the problem. Calling them chutiya, gawar, ILLITERATE, Gunda, when they can't speak in Hindi or English with you is what has made this into a big issue today. No, showing such disrespect is not isolated cases anymore. It has become the norm. That is why Kannadigas are saying enough is enough, stop expecting us to learn Hindi and instead you learn Kannada.

Hindi is not an north indian language, except kannadiga who hate hindi i do not know why, every other state they speak hindi just for convenience. I do not know when this idea was created that Hindi is northees language and why so unnecessary hate? And why only kannad people have this problem? Just think of it. Kannad is your mother toungue and you love it thats quite ok, but why impose it? We already are divided with lot of things do we need a reason again to be divided? A person in Karnataka will eventually speak kannada when he will have enough loving kannad people in his/her circle. But this hate will create hate, and if you genuinely do not know hindi thats ok, knowing and not speaking it being clever that doesn't make you a better human. My mother tongue is not Hindi, i just speak in hindi for convenience and same goes with English if thats ok with you, will never impose my mother tongue on anyone, if they get reasons to love my mother tongue definitely they will speak.
Karnataka state should follow Dual language policy, Kannada & English, option is Hindi and it should be not be promoted by the state, else migrants from North would take the easy path to speak on the language they know and it becomes socially acceptable. Policy guideline and strict implementation is the only lasting solution to this vexed issue. In Tamil Nadu, dual language policy kept the local language dominant, as for as the uneducated migrants they have to learn in their own ways, over time any language is easy to learn, TN people are never hostile to migrants from other states but migrants should learn, prosper and contribute to language vibrancy in their own ways if they wish to stay and make it their home place. Karnataka miserably failed on this policy aspect and the result is anger, frustration vented out by Kannadigas.

One of the ancient Kannada Culture spared in 2L SQKM is not soo week that a piece of 50km radius Land can impact it. Its just a demographic load which can be resolved by some good gov initiatives and rules. Don't get emotional, your culture will be preserved, protected and respected.
I was waiting for this kind of a video where there is a balance between learning and tolerance. I have friends who are trying to learn Kannada and have friends who have point blank refused in trying to learn Kannada. We cannot deny the job opportunities created by IT industries in Bengaluru. Also we won't accept that Bangalore has become great because of migrants only. The anti kannadiga sentiment is growing because a lot of people (including me) have faced the sheer rudeness and entitlement attitude that migrants have shown towards learning Kannada. I hope this video reaches to the people who are blunt and help integration of migrants a much smoother process.
P.S. before anyone comments saying that I am a Maharashtrian because of my surname, I am not. I was born in North Karnataka but brought up in Bengaluru. I am a Kannadiga and through and through Bangalorean.

You studied in a non-English medium school? Do you use your native language at work? On the computer? On emails? If yes, then you wouldn't even need to spell out your expectations to non-natives. They will "respect" native languages automatically :)
@@rs218 So that's where the issues are na, buddy...There are exceptions where "automatically" is not being implied. Being a Kannadiga, I studied in Kannada medium. I don't use on computer or emails? I do talk in Kannada with people on day to day basis. But if you have had an experience with people who doesn't accept English. They are more comfortable speaking in their native language.
Anyways, my point is to those people who must respect the local culture and language, after all India is known for diversity and with its mindset, it becomes an integrity to respect the local in the native. By the way, you cannot ignore the fact that we Kannadigas are respectful to the non - Kannadigas. Few of exceptions you see who "Pretend" to be local are everywhere and create ruckus.

As per d Constituent Assembly on d Language issue, it was concluded that Hindi was to b learned by d Sourth & d North had to learn a southern language, which is not done. HAL, IISC,Engineering and Medical colleges were built by Maharajas of Mysore even before 1947.we had our own banks , own airlines , own railways. one can read the opinion of sardar vallaha bhai patel about mysore state. Now we have lost that patience of hoping Northies will learn kananda like that, no other way is left out other than aggression. d. Our politicos also wont delvelop industries and institutions in all districts to give locals jobs, so thye also have to flock to cities and live miserable lives. Problem is very deep rooted .
e. sloganeering wont help - instd we have to demand infra in every district so more cos start offices there instd of bengaluru. Then maybe lots of people will move back , start enterprising avenues and generate jobs . likewise if every state manages this, this issue wont be so big - only the very few high skilled people will go to greener pastures , until then, its survival of the fittest /most adaptable

Learning Kannada has been an ongoing conversation for the past 30 years. I've seen Kannadigas advocate for it, but only a small fraction of migrants have actually embraced the language. This slow adoption is one of the reasons why some Kannadigas are becoming increasingly vocal and agression towards learning the language.
Just look around, majority of migrants living in Bangalore more than 15, 20 years still can't speak basic sentences.
