- Fulfilling its mission to preserve and perpetuate the art of hula, each year the Merrie Monarch Festival provides a stage for the world’s finest hula hālau (schools) in order to showcase Hawaiʻi’s unique cultural art of hula.
Here are highlights of the 4 top finishers in the 2013 Hula Kahiko (ancient), Kāne (male) Division.
1st Place: Kawailiʻulā
Kumu Hula: Chinky Māhoe
“O Kīlauea Noho Lulu”
In Kīlauea, Pele’s deep sleep is disturbed and she is lured from her home by the haunting drum beat of a dance performance at Hāʻena, Kauaʻi. She travels from island to island, drawn by the sound of Lohiau’s drumming.
Appearing as a beautiful woman adorned with forest greenery, Pele approaches Lohiau and they soon become lovers.
2nd Place: Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi
Nā Kumu Hula: ʻIliahi & Haunani Paredes
“Mālie ʻO Maui”
The dancers offer “Mālie ʻO Maui,” an athletic and bombastic hula from the repertoire of the late Kumu Hula O’Brian Eselu. Kumu ʻIliahi performed this mele at the Merrie Monarch Festival over 20 years ago.
It begins with a Maui adage, “When Maui is calm, Kaihuakalā Hill can easily be seen.” Many say that Hāna is not experienced unless one has set eyes on Kaihuakalā.
3rd Place: Ke Kai O Kahiki
Kumu Hula: Laʻakea Perry
“Kauō Pū Ka ʻIwa Kala Paheʻe”
The islands of Kaula and Lehua are featured in this mele hula. Storm winds and rains sweep the cliffs and wreak havoc with the flight of the ʻiwa bird. Amid the fierce elements, there is love that stirs in the prince and princess while they sleep.
4th Place: Hālau Hula ʻO Kahikilaulani
Kumu Hula: Nāhōkūokalani Gaspang
“Nā Nalu O Hawaiʻi”
Many famous surf spots along the coast of Hawaiʻi are named in this mele. It was said that in ancient times, entire villages left their homes and work when the call “Ua piʻi mai ka nalu!” or “Surf’s up!” was heard.
Villagers arrived at the shore and surfers would encourage great swells to roll in by saying, “Kū mai, kū mai ka nalu - The surf looms forth.”

I’m jealous of everyone’s knees in this video… My joints could never 😮💨
😂😂😂😂
I feel your pain 😂
This exactly
😅 Envy! Me too
Imagine an island full of what was considered as the fiercest warriors of their time are also the best dancers.
Omg right ❤😂💪🏻
wearing freaky cocktail skirts
And they sing 🥵
Makes perfect sense. In most cultures the folk dances are a show of person's strength, stamina and coordination - something needed in a fight, too.
Fighting and dancing are actually very similar! Many martial artists are also dancers. There is rhythm in fighting, and dancing is reflexive. ❤
Yes, aside the obvious “eye candy” we get, we have to take a step back and admire the strength of these men to go up, wear traditional garb, practically go tiptoe dancing with precise precision, sing in a quite nearly dying language that’s supposed to be native to their lands (in a state where there’s 1.5 million, only about 30k speak it, counting both first and second language speakers), and present a story of their ancestors to preserve the culture.
This traditional dancing is beautiful. There’s something fun about the body also being a percussive instrument when dancing
If i got stranded on an island with them, I wouldnt be sad.
They are the gift that keeps on giving and, well, dressed as gifts I would never return
same, I wouldn't be sad. Just tired. 😜
This is why the weather is hot in Hawaii. The hula dancers raise everyone’s temperature

Women of the culture.... Together we stand for them 😂❤❤❤❤
So much love and respect for Hawaiian and Polynesian culture. I had the honor of living in Hawaii for 8 years, and I miss it deeply. Hopefully some day I can go back and pay my respects to the land, ocean, and people.
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Como que é mora no Hawaiian ?
As a Blackfeet native American, the Hawaiian culture and their traditions are SO beautiful, and so powerful!! You can feel their spirit, amazingly beautiful and strong, so powerful!!!✊✊ Much love!!🤙🤙💖💖💖
❤ The women screaming for these handsome, dancing men. I can understand. Beautiful presentation.
It is nice to see men dancing and showing how athletic dancing is. Dancing is not for the weak and faint of heart.
OMG the strength in the legs! Some of those men are absolutely beautiful too.
Watch documentary on how they trained, including having stone strapped to the foot and walking in water. It's basically military training.
These men are wonderful souls, and proud warriors….the energy and spirit shown here is just…BOOM!!!
Magnificent. Great to see the younger generation keeping up traditions and culture.
Unfortunately it was The Americans who destroyed Hawaii. Dismissed Queen and Royal family and the True Government of Hawaii...
The timing and precision in this dance is just ridiculous! I could watch this over and over and over. Thank you for sharing.💚
0 😊
Now that's art, it's enough to hypnotize ❤😊
Polynesian and Native Indian people are God's gift to the world. Beautiful culture and traditional dances. ❤️
Then it's the Dravidian
@@ruh96said nobody ever
I wish the people who came after learned from them. Important lessons to be learned.
There is a similar dance form in Kalahandi district of Odisha..where they tie drum near to chest..
Funny how everything derived from what is now labeled as Africa yet no one wants to admit it.
My Greenlandic indigenous hearts is LOVING this!!! 🇬🇱 In my home country we don’t teach our young our traditions anymore.. but I hope your passion for your traditions, can inspire and revive other forgotten indigenous dance and music 🎵 ❤
Get people involved in bringing it back. It’s important to preserve culture.
@@Sabbathissaturdayyou have the unique ,Inuit throat singing/ hum.
Amazing fete
These are some elite knees
The precision and energy is so wonderful to watch
Great precision and timing. Could watch for a great length of time
I wish it would translate the story these beautiful dances are telling to allow us to appreciate them more.
Agreed
The description has a brief summary for each one
Beautiful ❤
It's great to see physically fit men displaying their manly pride in dance. This is a great inspiration to the many conquered indigenous peoples of the world who have had their culture taken from them, who then can fall prey to alcohol and drugs. Good for you! Keep it up! Bring it back!
To colonisation in the first instance.
@davechristenssen whatever...Wow, thanks for the pat on the head white man!🤗
Wow what an intensely patronizing comment. In just a few lines you know the guy is white, sexist, has a toxic masculine attitude, and racist. Yes blame the indigenous people for drugs and alcoholism instead of what your people did to them.
Absolutely... wonderful performance.❤
That was your take away from this? Yes, overlook them proudly participating in and preserving their culture and heritage and instead focus on their bodies and make a blanket statement on most indigenous people being alcoholics and addicts.
Their Ancestors must be so proud of them for preserving & respecting their cultural mores & folkways, so rich, well done! ☮💚🥳🥳🥳💫💫
no matter how many times i watch this vid, i think of the many blessings of this strong and BEAUTIFUL CULTURE..... EVERY GESTURE & LYRIC IS POWERFUL...TRULY POETRY IN MOTION! 🙏💖🥰
I am here because I read a BBC article on King David La'amea Kalākaua. These is a fascinating tradition. I've never seen men dancing the traditional Hawaiian dances before.
Women of culture, we meet again 😅
Nice to see these young men keeping up cultural dances 👏👏🥰
It is amazing that every movement of their hands tells a story.
As a side thought… I hope Maui, and the Lahaina area, is healing after that devastating fire. Such a beautiful island. I’d love to visit again.
It takes a strong man to dance with a loin cloth on and a big bow round your middle. Beautiful to watch. Would love to visit Hawaii one day.
It doesn’t take that much strength if it’s someone’s traditions… it’s an honor to represent the art form and the history associated with it.
I think your traditions and culture are beautiful,
So amazing! I love traditional dances! And I admire the people that do them! It's such a dedication and honestly I kept thinking my legs would be so sore I don't think I could ever do it... It really does take a lot of muscle and endurance
The music and dance blend together so seamlessly! They don't just dance to music - they become the music, making the dance itself musical. It's so amazing to watch how much intention goes into each movement
What a beautiful culture that I hope continues to thrive and be enjoyed around the world. ❤
Major props to ya'll cause my knees could NEVER
😂 same because I’m overweight
OMG! The strength those men have is amazing!
J'adore les danses traditionnelles et découvre le Hula. C'est magnifique !
Strong and extremely graceful. Beautiful to watch.
Beautiful all of these dances are so unique
Each dance is created around the Mele, the vocal story heard.
This is what is so amazingly beautiful about cultural spiritual dances like Hula. You can see the men and women embed such impactful historical hopes and dreams, connection to higher understanding, melding the present while preserving the past. It's transcendent. As I understand it is a competition, from an outsider perspective it seems to be a showcase, I am curious about the judges criteria on who wins.
that leg tattoo on one of the guys in the third group... it looks insane! like he has a permanent leg/hip armor ready for battle!
That’s a Samoan Pe’a, he mostly likely is of both Samoan and Hawaiian decent. Contrary to most assumptions the tattoo is not a warrior tattoo, but rather the tattoo of the servant as it represents one’s willingness to be a leader of their people.
@@mctulkyviperbit6166 thanks for the explanation. I knew it had to have some kind of cultural significance but since I know nothing about their traditions I had no idea where to find the info about it. Such a beautiful culture.
Dancing for the ancestors and they are proud
I wish they would subtitle the " story" of the dance. I'm loving this .
Thank you for sharing this. I love to see When people have pride in their culture And heritage. This absolutely beautiful and powerful.
Please for the sake of my eyes and all the future generations to come, please preserve this I BEG OF THEE 😍😍😍
I still tear up at seeing indigenous cultures like this. It’s beautiful how they are motivated to keep their cultures alive through these events. God bless Hawaii’s people and all Indigenous communities. ❤
amazing, wonderful, beautiful, no words for describe, love it!!!!
Looks so fun!!!
I absolutely LOVED the drum on the thigh. I totally want a character with one of those!!
Their dance is so captivating 😮
I can watch this all day
I can’t stop drooling over these manly men. Perfect specimen of the male body. ❤❤❤
Absolutely agree with you .
So attractive...
what a disgusting comment. this is culture and tradition, not Magic Mike. You do realise some of them who you think are 'men' are VERY young? Do some research
They’re so frigging manly ❤
Beautiful culture would love to see in person 💕💕
I loved watching Merrie Monarch every year when I lived there. I miss it.
Beautiful culture..and beautiful gorgeous looking men.
Che meraviglia, sono tutti così precisi e armoniosi. Quanto vorrei poter vedere l'Hula di persona.
Beautifull dance, armony, stile, and perfection.
i pray that i meet a man whose a warrior and a soldier my heart is filled with aspersions of love and peace 🕊️
Girl same lol
I've had warrior and soldiers. If you want peace, avoid them. They'll search for conflict, peace is stressing for them.
Aim to meet someone like those dancers, filled with passion, dedication, patience and poetry !
Amen to that 😂

That's my husband to a Tee! He's a Marine and a veterinary nurse and takes amazing care of me. He's also from Hawaii. They do exist, though rare. Don't give up hope.
Молодцы.Синхронность исполнения бесподобна .
Да
All of the dancing in this video was amazing to watch. But I have to say, I think I loved the 3rd group just a bit more. Their dancing was smooth and powerful.
Can't understand the words, but deeply appreciate the rhythm.
That was really good. I really enjoy that. It was nice to see everybody synchronized and all the dances they were all synchronized that’s what’s really amazing and all of us that I found anyways but that’s just my opinion.
The performance is absolutely beautiful 👏👏👏👏🫡
I love traditional dance from around the world.
I love the merrie monarch festival.
I had no idea this even existed. Learn something new everyday.
It's like watching a mountain dancing . What a cool breeze 🤗🗻
I would love to see the translation of each of these so I can understand the stories behind them
The colors R vibrant🌺 That was Great & Beautiful 🤙🍍🏝
Beautiful!💜
They are magnificent
Holy moly. Elegant and fierce.
Actually I'm drooling why was i born in OZ when these men ALL OF THEM are physically scrumptious perfection from head to floor and gr8 gr8 legs ❤

can't imagine how strong their feet while doing some exercise, while I just amaze with their discipline and rhythm, so amazing.
Gosh this is like a hundred times better than those korean boy group.. 😍
You know you can appreciate something without putting someone else down right?
This is better than Magic Mike in Las Vegas
Literally
This is gross, your gross, shameful
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Beautiful!!
Great muscle control. Great dancing!
My knees.. ! But an awesome presentation and keep the tradition alive ✊🏿
Amazing. Next you gotta see Hawaiian hula Kahiko!
Astonishing! Beautiful artform!!🌺💖
Stunning.
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I love the fabrics that they wear and how they strap on the drums to their knees while they dance. I really wish our men would be more open minded to these ancient traditions. Unfortunately a lot of them fear being labeled as “gay” or “weak.” 😭
Интересно эти красавцы от танцев так подкачались?
Квадрицепсы мощные от частых приседов и хождения полуприседом,мускулатура красивая.
Пойду завяжу одеяло вокруг бедер и попробую повторить😊😁
I like this👏👏👏👏👏
Beautiful interesting and supernatural talent 🎉
I have been to an hula in Oahu and I was so impressed by the fitness of both men and women 😮
Fabulous darlings 🥰💯💋🔥
Beautiful people, beautiful culture.
Ooooo they come gift wrapped...😁
They looks so cool and bad ass!
My knees hurt just watching this XD. Very impressive!
Beatiful❤❤❤❤❤❤
If those big bows around their middles indicate they’re a present, then I want mine!
Strength and beauty ❤
I'm so fascinated by this culture
so much in common for new-zealand natives and hawaii natives
love their fluidity
