Michael Richards Apologizes for Racist Rant at Comedy Club

- In 2006, during a performance at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood, California, Michael Richards became enraged at some hecklers in the audience and used several racial epithets as well as referring to lynchings. The audience responded by calling Richards a "cracker" and an "white boy." Following the incident, Richards appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman to offer an apology. The venue was clearly confusing for the audience as they would frequently laugh at things Richards would say in complete seriousness.
When Jerry told everyone to stop laughing you know shit just got real
I’ve never felt that feeling in my stomach when he said that

No he just sounded stupid
Don’t disrespect Seinfeld
I remember watching this when it aired and I assumed it was some kind of an Andy Kauffman-esque bit because I had no idea what they were talking about. Unfortunately, not a bit.
It’s really weird to have Kramer sit for an interview with letterman and pretend to be this Michael Richards fellow. It’s a tough sell
“Stop laughing it’s not funny” sounds like a school principal
It’s David’s delivery
The comedian asked people to stop laughing
It’s hilarious, Jerry!
Well, in that case it was needed and appropriate.
It's rare to see a celebrity so choked up when live. You can tell Seinfeld feels genuinely bad about his friend and for him.

@Dick Harper it’s a common term the left use believe it or not
He is a good friend , a celebrity would have been more inclined to stay away from this , but he stood by his friend ..
I don't know so much about how good of a friend he is, when this is likely more along the lines of "I'm tied professionally to this man, and his downfall, in the long run, could negatively impact my financial future" Jerry Seinfeld stood to lose money if people boycotted Seinfeld, stopped playing reruns, and stopped buying DVD's. Royalties out the window. Nah, Jerry was saving his own ass, while in private calling Michael a f-cking moron.
Right, it has nothing to do with saving the brand Seinfeld.
How much of a friend do you think he would be if he said things about Jews
@@AlphaMachina He doesn't need money. They worked on a show together for 9 years on a comedy. Of course they got close. Richards was so painfully sincere. I thought it was profound.

The incident itself was super hard to watch and embarassing and awful, but this...ooh boy, the way people laugh and all...this was just the final nail of the cringe coffin
Yep
The incident was FANTASTIC, there's nothing more entertaining than watching someone lose their temper, screw up and watch their career end in real time. It's tragic and hilarious and sad and awful all at the same time. Great entertainment.
Now if he had done a bit for that apology it woulda turned it around.. came out in full KKK attire, a d been like "welp now everyone knows I'm a racist, I see no reason to wear this in private"eople would talk about that forever.. but apologies NEVER work. Noone cares if you're sorry. Your career is over.. go out with a bang instead of a pandering whimpering apology.
Gotta love Jerry when he addresses the audience. Whether you buy it or not the man is clearly being serious.
He sounds like a substitute teacher 🤣
I give a lot of credit to Letterman and Jerry. So many Hollywood people would turn their back on someone but Jerry stood by him and Letterman gave him air time to try and apologize.

he was being very racist. He said "that what happens when a black man interrupts a white man". he was stipulating about race. his whole rant was based on the fact that the guy was black and being rude. the same things would not have come out of him mouth if he was white.

Here's the problem with your logic... this man said all of those hateful things toward a certain race... then did NOTHING about it later. I would agree with your point of view if the man actually did SOMETHING to show that it was only a one-time mistake, rather than his true belief system. Pay for everyone's ticket in the audience. Find the people he offended, apologize directly to them, and buy them a nice all expenses paid vacation somewhere. Donate some of his millions to a charity that benefits the race he slurred. Anything to actually DO something. But, no. All we get are words. And, these are words from a professional actor, no less. This is a man who is paid to learn lines of dialog, and to deliver those lines to a camera in any way he's told to make them sound. And, what do we have for his apology? We have lines of dialog that he's speaking to a camera. Sorry, but ACTIONS mean more than words. If this man actually did something positive, then I'd agree to cut him slack. But, no. He said all of the terrible things, then, he calls a friend to help him get back on TV to apologize, by delivering apology lines to a camera. Sorry, I'm not buying it.

Well said.
Very well stated.
Probably. People are a product of all of their life experiences and their upbringing. Some things are there that we're not proud of but they are still there. I don't hold it against him at all. People do a lot of things when they are enraged. Some people commit murder.
True. But I don’t think he’s an actual racist. His comments outburst was indeed racist 100%. But to me there is a difference from getting angry at someone and yelling racist things than having a true hatred for a race who wants to see them tortured, dead or otherwise as well as having no respect, care or superior attitude against another race. I think he just got pissed off with the audience and he went on a racist tirade. Again, this was situational racism and of course it’s awful and bad but not a form of saying the person is a flat out racist. Imo.
And not to mention that this he states that this incident still troubles him. Says a lot.
Nice move of Jerry to do this, hes a true friend.
Probably to just save the brand. He's of a certain tribe after all.
@@Thunderchild-gz4gc You mean successful people?
@@hollywooda111 no a certain tribe that controls plenty dipshit
@@Thunderchild-gz4gc Yeah, no. If Jerry Seinfeld disowned Michael Richards for what he did, that would have been seen in a positive light as it would have shown that he doesn't condone racism. That would have been "saving the brand." That being said, Jerry Seinfeld didn't give him a chance to apologize to save the brand as his brand wasn't at risk. The show was already over and done with for a few years at that point, and so whatever Michael did was only going to personally reflect bad on himself. The reason he gave him that chance was because he was a personal friend and that was it, nothing more, nothing less.
Also your statement that he did it because of him being of a "certain tribe" (i'm pretty sure your saying he only helped him because whites stick together) is idiotic, as Jerry Seinfeld himself is of Austrian and Syrian Jewish decent. Lumping Seinfeld together with oppressive whiteness is idiotic as Jerry himself is of a class of people who have been horribly oppressed and mass murdered for millennia.
The one time in history the smirk disappeared from Jerry Seinfeld's face.
I can understand the laughter, because at the beginning of his apology it almost seemed like a twisted bit from Seinfeld. It seems like Kramer apologizing at the principal’s office. I think it was hard in that moment for the audience to separate Michael Richards from Kramer and the absurdity of it was just too funny not to laugh.
Ultimately, I don’t think this was a good apology. And I’m not saying that because I think he’s a genuine racist either. I think everyone has preconceived notions and biases about different groups or types of people, and those biases occur along racial lines for everybody. But the fact that he never used the word “racist” that he danced around it and called it a “rage” or saying “some mean things.” I think he would have fared much better had he just fully acknowledged that the things he said were racist, they were reprehensible, that he understands if people won’t accept his apology and that they have a right to if they don’t. He stumbled around too much, didn’t get to the root of it, didn’t address his tirade for what it was… there’s almost no chance from coming back from what he did, but what little chance he did have was completely put to rest here.
I think he did and profusely aswell. I thought he did really well remembering it was still fresh. Keep in mind ppl were laughing int he audience. Maybe you should watch it again?
The audience were laughing because his apology sounded so fucking disingenuous that it almost seemed like it was a comedy skit. If you're going to pretend to be sorry for your actions, at least put some effort into it instead of half-assing it just to salvage what's left of your non-existent career.

This is how you feel deep inside and you got exposed. No apology needed. Saying the N word once is telling. He shouted it repeatedly like a machine gun and then says I’m sorry? Please cut it tf out.
THIS is why when your client goes as far as he did, you as his agent should just abandon ship instead of even attempting to give him a platform to apologize on. People slip up and say things they regret, but this guy DID NOT slip up. The things he said are the kind of thoughts that are deeply rooted in his personality, in who he is as a person. That entire apology was so awkward. Almost painful to watch. also a comedy show probably isn’t the best place to issue a formal apology. what did he and Jerry expect?
Why would you apologize for something you meant That's even worse
The root cause of this is that Michael Richards, who is NOT a standup comic, took a job as a standup comic. A real comic approaches his set like a prizefighter approaches a bout he has trained for it and anticipates some punches will be thrown his way, but he always remembers that HE is the man onstage holding the mic. Any shouts from the darkened audience can be ignored, unless he has a funny way to put them down, which wins him points with the (judges) audience. Richards let them get in his head from the start, and because he only "trains" on a closed set, he was out of his element and reacted like a caged, scared animal. On "Seinfeld" he simply combed his hair in a funny hairstyle and moved in a.jerky manner like a cartoon character and recited the lines that Jerry & Larry wrote for him. That does NOT equal "Stand-up."
I agree - the way Chris Rock took the Will Smith thing had everything to do with the fact that Rock has decades of year’s experience dealing with hecklers. Smith was nothing more than a physical heckler this time.

Tbh sometimes people just loose control. Look at the multiple murder cases where someone just seems to in a burst of the moment just straight up murder a partner, friend, random person for multiple reasons. The human mind is actually insane. You don't know what you are capable of doing, or anyone for that matter until they actually do it. At least his temporary moment of insanity was just words. Chris Watts is an example of someone who seemed normal with no violent tendencies. On a whim he murders his wife and children. On a whim we got racist Kramer.
I remember hearing about this but I never heard the exact words, it's bad. Was he drunk or something? If you aren't a racist I don't think you would use the words he did. But as I've said all my life, everyone is somewhat racist, blacks, browns, whites, etc. and you cannot arrest someone for bad thoughts.
