      If you weren't there in '84, then you may not be able to understand the impact he had on wrestling back then. He was invincible for 5 years or so. The Andre angle was when it got to be too much for me. It was heartbreaking to watch wrestlemania 3. Andre's health issues weren't really publicly known then, but the look on his face...painful. Back to hogan-he was perfect for the time. I can't honestly think of any other wrestler who could have been "Hulk Hogan" back then. Just big enough to not be a freakshow, but big enough to beat anybody and make it believable. He cut some of the best promos ever. Vince has been trying to recapture that power ever since. Since he was talking about Hogan, I wondered if it was a reference to his leathery skin tone, like that of a hot dog and the fact that he wore the colors of probably the two most common hotdog condiments. Saying that Bruno was a bigger draw than Hogan is a big stretch. If you mean solely in Los Angeles and the North Eastern corner of the US and in Bruno´s absolute top years, perhaps you can call the statement true. But Hulk was a worldwide phenomenon and as for Bruno, even most wrestling fans in North America either hadn´t heard about him or couldn´t care less about him, because he never wrestled in their local territory and mostly stuck to wrestling in the cities, where he was already over big time. Outside of the US, it´s not even a competition between the two.

    One of the most interesting ironies of Hogan to me is how he was always the master politician in protecting his interests at basically every stage of his career and clearly was always primarily focused on doing what was best for his personal interest even if doing so may come at the expense to the company like we saw in the later years in WCW. The primary thought that comes to everybody’s mind when discussing Hogans reputation is how selfish he always was in how he always protected his best interest but what makes the guy so interesting to me is that while he was always so protective of himself he also was extremely loyal to his close friends in the business and would use his influence to take care of those people as well. When it comes to taking care of your crew in pro wrestling over the years I don’t think anybody did so at the extreme that Hogan always did which is always really interesting to me since it’s such a polar opposite of his usual selfish nature when looking out for himself. It probably doesn’t spike interest from other people but for me it’ll never not be an interesting thing to see a guy who is ruthless in protecting his role at all costs but was also incredibly selfless when it came to his crew in doing what he could to make sure they were always taken care of even for guys who clearly took advantage of him for years and were just leeching off the guy as much as they could while offering little in return in the friendship and how he knew it and allowed it anyways

      If someone else were in Hogan’s place as the top guy, the same things would be said. For instance, I felt that same way about Bob Backlund at one time, as I questioned why he has such a long run. But then I started looking at things objectively and came to the realization that for each era, someone’s going to stand out above the rest and be “the guy”, and many of us are not always going to be in love with who the majority may favor.
      And that’s alright, however, seeing videos like what WrestlePod puts out, it’s plain to see a lot of people commenting on here seem only capable of telling others how much they hate Hulk Hogan, which is sad. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t so much about defending Hogan as it is about observing how many people would rather just point out how much they hate Hogan instead of discussing and paying tribute to the performers they did like.
      After all there are MANY other performers that we can speak about without even having to ever mention Hogan’s name.

      @@r.josedefraga1205 Very well put. When I talk trash about Hulk Hogan, it’s usually the man behind the character. The character himself was a great success.
      And yes, there are many others who politic just like he did. He was just one of the most notorious at it. What one could argue that without him, professional wrestling might not have been at the level it was in the 80s and in the 90s with the whole Monday night war thing.

I grew up in Memphis and got to see tons of live wrestling and even when WWF took off they had a deal with Memphis Wrestling to send their biggest stars down here to wrestle at our local events. It was entertaining at the time.

    Great channel! Been subbed since the start of this series. I’ll say the climate changed much in this country from 80’s compared to 90’s. Hogan embodied a patriotic, God fearing white male who stood for good, fam & friends. He obviously was very different behind the scenes, but the character he played was beloved by all! When the 90s came and movies like terminator made bad guys cool that white meat baby face appeal died off. I can understand you not being a fan of Hogan if you didn’t experience the 80s. It was a much different time. Not saying it was better or worse, just different.
    Also I would say Hogan was more patriotic than Duggan (who didn’t have the flag gimmick til well after Hogan did it) was more imposing than Ultimate Warrior (6’7 vs 6’1) and cut a slightly better promo than Macho (subjective, but us 80’s kids lost our fucking minds when Hogan came on tv and would be PISSED if he wasn’t on the program lol)
    Just my $.02, great videos though! Very entertaining

      @Wrestle Pod There’s the Zeitgeist element. It wasn’t just Hogan that was a pop phenom, it was more that the other elements of pop culture at that time built Hogan. Not being from the era, it’s entirely understandable that someone might not “get it”. I had a similar experience trying to explain to kids (and this was decades ago) why Power Rangers was stupid, especially compared to Voltron. Then, upon rewatching Voltron cartoons on a binge attempt, I realized it was pretty stupid, too. I couldn’t relate to the Power Rangers era, because I wasn’t part of it in that way, and I realized that Voltron was only cool in the timeframe in which it existed, too. It’s totally a “you had to be there” thing.

    Hulkamania was over because of marketing and timing. It was the same formula that worked for He-Man, GI Joe, etc around the same time: cartoons, cereal, toys, and eventually the movie that would be bomb financial. Hulk Hogan had a consistent color scheme (the red and yellow) and an easy-to-remember catch phase and was easy to market to kids back then. When you're 8 - 10 years old, you're not picking your favorite wrestle based on promo skills or work rate.
    Yes...Bruno Sammartino, Ric flair, Bret hart, rick rude, roddy piper, Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin etc were all better wrestlers and had better promos than Hulk Hogans without argument but either they were popular before or after the 80s cartoons, cereal, toys, formula, or just weren't as marketable to kids at that time. Was a guy like Rick Rude who came out to stripper music and swiveling his hips like a Chippendale dancer going to be the face of a cartoon and cereal?
    Like it or not Vince's plan to make pro wrestling more entertainment than wrestling worked. It made him and Hulk Hogan a lot of money.

    • @brad563
      @brad563 2 года назад +2

      Did you seriously just say bret hart, Shawn Michaels, and Rick rude had better promos? If ya don't like Hogan it's cool. I don't like him. But it's just crazy when people act like he wasn't incredibly charismatic and extremely good in the ring for the time.

    • @andrewrodriguez5822
      @andrewrodriguez5822 2 года назад

      Um did you watch Brett Harts promos in the 80s...they were awful same with Brunos lol. Hogan did have skills watch his matches in Japan and in the AWA he had to work. He would if never got over without it. The low workrate formula worked in the 80s because he was charismatic and had the best promos at the time. I can always tell when someone is drinking the Brett Hart Kool aid

    I think timeline is important for someone liking or not liking Hogan .
    If you grew up in the 80s ( as I did ) he was THE face of wrestling and all us kids wanted to be him.
    If you saw him for the first time in the 90s he looked out of touch physically and for what was going on at the time but you could say the same of Andre the Giant if he had survived
    As kids we all loved Andre but let's be honest he was a terrible wrestler and if not for his size he wouldn't have stood a chance.
    It's all how it was portrayed and the age you were when you first got into wrestling.

    • @Matt-cr4vv
      @Matt-cr4vv 9 месяцев назад

      I think people discount just how much your age impacts your perception of entertainment in everything not just wrestling. I think if we all take an honest look back we can all point out lots of things we thought were amazing as kids and then if we watch it as an adult have zero clue why we used to think it was so good. So the 80s kids who all loved Hogan who disliked him later is really super normal to em

Now despite going through some of the absolute worst days of his life, he still took the time to and effort to be "on" enough to take a picture with the newlyweds and congratulate them.
