Just the information I needed since I accidently made CYMK for printing and now I learned I needed RGB for Fine Art Prints, will watch the brighten up dull files after this one, Thank you !!!!!
Ty ty ty, ive been missing this cmyk option because it only appears on new canvases. Ultimately, the last three years of my work are unprintable BUT thanks to your vid it will never ever happen again! Loaded elements into a CMYK canvas and instantly saw the difference. Ty ty ty!
Very useful info from you. Thank you! Unfortunately, I will have to repaint a large part of it in a CMYK canvas, as I used a colour gradient with watercolours. At least I can use the outline from the RGB canvas.
Thank you. Is there a way to fix the colors to look more like the RGB version? I don’t like the CMYK version of my art at all, but that’s what my printer uses…
Hey! From what I know CMYK will always be the duller version of our RGB artwork because RGB is more for digital work and CMYK is for printed media and it has a limited amount of color space to pull from. I would say to better the colors of your printed artwork try to find the closest match of the RGB color to the CMYK color :) Hopes this helps!
I too am running into this problem with my kid’s book. The colors printed in the book are very dull yet I see other ppls books are very colorful and look more like rgb…idk what I’m doing wrong
Unfortunately no. You'd need to export a flat image and import it into a CMYK doc. I found sometimes the colour would only look different if I then exported the new doc as a PSD!
Thank you so much for this helpful video. I have just created a children's book and the designer created all the images in RGB instead of CMYK. I have a question: she sent me all the Procreate files, if I copy them over layer by layer is the quality likely to be better than if I simply export is as a .psd and upload it? It's very important to me that the colours of the printed book are bright and not washed out. She's not really helping me so I would really appreciate your help with this as this is a very important project.
Hey Martine! It might be worth testing how the print turns out keeping in RGB format. You are printing professionally by the sounds? Call the printer and ask what he/she suggests in this case. They might even allow you to submit .psd files and run a test both in RGB and a CMYK version to see which comes out better. They could then more easily change the colour format for you as well. In a situation like that, you're better off using software that will allow those colour changes easily (like photoshop) and a professional print shop will definitely have that. Hope that helps!
I used terracotta color in my procreate art in RGB profile and in print the terracotta color totally changed it turns brown color and it's so dull. What should I do to fix it. thanks
Me encantó todo. Celebro 🎉 porque me has ayudado con tu video desde el el primer segundo. Soy nueva con el iPad y con Procreate , me han comprado un diseño e hice casi absolutamente todos los pasos que dijiste. Eres la mejor. Suscrita 4 ever.
is there no way to get a cmyk file to be less dull?? like what if someone's art is brighter and more colorful and when printed as cmyk, it is totally dull and muted? i mean can the hsb adjustment be done in a cmyk procreate canvas so it resembles the more vibrant colorful rgb art?
for example, printers with inkjets instead of cartridges seem to be printing more vibrantly as of recently so maybe it could be possible to print bright colors??
I figured it out i think. Ok so I fumbled with this myself. What i did is: I kept the file in RGB, but i noticed when you go to export and print the color is off because printers use CMY and it alters the color. So i just went to the Hue/ saturation tab and lowered the saturation ( it will be set at 50%, just lower it to about 38% maybe lower) and then when you go to export the file will look more like the original. I havnt tried to print just get but so far it looks like the file retained the original color. And isnt so bright and over saturated.
Hi, when I work on procreate in RGB and then export it THE COLORs look plane and as if it doesn’t have profundity… how can I fix that? And thanks … on the iPad looks good but on the phone or computer the colors look bad
Hello, thank you for this video! For some reason even though I follow your steps, the option of cmyk doesn't show up for me at all (timestamp 3:07 in the video), what do I do to fix that?
Hi Patricia, what version of Procreate are you running? The 2 colour options should be there side by side on the 'Colour Profile' tab under the new canvas settings... Maybe try updating the app if you don't see it. Hope that helps!
As far as pasting a flat image into the CMYK canvas, that's a great way! If you want to preserve the layers though, you'll need to copy and paste them individually

Thank you for the concise tutorial, but i have a problem: I converted my RGB file into CMYK with the method you showed; I copied every single layer and then exported the image as PNG and airdropped it on my mac; however, when I click the i-Symbol for the image on the mac, it still says 'colour profil RGB' :( What am I doing wrong, am I the only one with this problem? Also, when I export it as a PSD, it's still dull; is that normal? Will the print I intend to make come out like the PSD? Thanks to anyone for reading the whole thing
Ok I've just learned that PNG and JPG (in most cases) do not support CMYK at all and will always convert it back to RGB. It seems the only option is PDF, however I loose quality when I choose this format. :(
I wanna make my designs in to sticker they coome out really dull in RGB so was told to do it in CMYK but that look dull too. any ideas how i can keep them looking nice and not dull.
The colors available in CMYK are more limited compared to the colours displayed onscreen (which use the RGB format). I’d suggest working with a CMYK palette to start with, that way you can choose from the color set and stick to colors that are possible to produce when printed and won’t be comparing with the screen RGB colours
Hi I don’t know when this tutorial was made, maybe it’s from a previous version of Procreate, but Can’t you just go into the tools and under add click “copy Canvas” it copies everything you have showing in one layer and doesn’t flatten your original layers, then go back to the gallery and make a canvas the same size but with CMYK then go back under tools under add and hit paste? That’s how I’ve been doing it, it usually totally changes the colors unfortunately cuz I like using bright jewel colors, so I’m guessing it’s fully converting it to CMYK colors. Is there
Hey Lara, thanks for that! Brilliant tip about the 'copy canvas' option. It flattens the canvas when you paste into a new doc for me though .. does it work differently for you? I'm running the latest version
I have found the colour change is only really obvious when you export the artwork from Procreate. In the video, I suggest using a .psd format for this as it is compatible with the CMYK colour spectrum.
Even after changing the color profile, the colors are muted when I save them..even more so when I send it to my phone. I changed the canvas size and dpi
Hi Jay. If you are working with CMYK they will be more muted than the RGB palette. Depends what your goals are. If you plan to print, CMYK is the better option and the muted colours onscreen are a more accurate reflection of what the printed version will look like. It's not muting the colours but giving rather you a preview of the print palette.
@@blsk3719 I figured it out i think. Ok so I fumbled with this myself. If you want to send me the Procreate files, I can take a look and try to work out what happened. Include the RGB version and the pixelated CMYK version
Thanks, and that is such a good tip! There's a little trick though, you need to drag the layers onto a blank layer in the layers panel (not just the canvas itself), otherwise the position and order will mess up. It also won't keep any of your layer properties or blend modes.
Thanks for watching! the point was to bring the layers into a new document that has the CMYK settings to keep them editable. Unless I'm missing something, dragging the layers onto the gallery saves them out individually on the gallery as separate layers 🤷♀️
