An absolute special teams boner by Michigan State results in just a 17-14 halftime deficit in an otherwise nightmare-ish first half. After the play, John L. Smith goes on one of the better coach meltdowns of the decade.

The assistant coach he yelled at is Josh Harrica. In 2022, he was my daughter's high school principal in upstate NY. Very kind man, a great school leader... he is well respected
I was 22 watching this live and I've been quoting that "the kids are playing their tails off, and their coaches are screwing it up" every year since then. Every year a coach should say this during an interview to pay homage.
I’m a die hard MSU fan and this is just funny. I don’t care what team you root for, this shit is funny.
Buckeyes ended up winning, 35-24. I was there - that play changed everything.
Same. I was there too. This was devastating.
One can only imagine what Nick Saban's reaction and response would have been if he had been the head coach on the Michigan State sideline.
I like how Smith is trying not to go off on a nasty swearing streak. Boy was he mad.
There are a lot of great coaching rager moments, but this is vastly underrated and deserves to be up there with "Playoffs?!?!"
The underrated part of this: watch how the Buckeye defense isn't sure what to do but gets lined up properly for the block. I think A.J. Hawk gets Ashton lined up on the edge and makes the play.

i was on the team at michigan state at this time. it was so confusing as to what was going on when we sent in our field goal team. we didn’t have the whole PAT out there and it was only 3rd down is was a GA that sent them in
@J Brown he wasn’t supposed to. It was very hectic on the sidelines we were winning at the time.
This is the one downside to being at the game...missing this meltdown haha

I remember this game. Up 17-7 on TheeOSU and getting ready to kick a chip shot FG at the end of the half to go up 20-7 and boom John L and his coaching staff strikes again!
I remember watching this game live. My boss at the time was HUGE Michigan State fan so I entertained the notion of rooting for MSU. Spartans played the first half tough and smart; and deserved to be in the lead at the half. But seeing them pretty much shit their pants during that last debacle of a field goal attempt changed my mind, could never root for MSU after that; poor coaching, game management, situational awareness.

I played in this game and when that happened we knew it was over even though we were up 3. That took the wind out our sails. " They are who we thought they were, and we let em off the hook! " Smh
I was at this game behind the goal posts here. We (OSU) were getting our ass whupped. Total momentum changer for the whole game.

What a reversal of fortune for the Spartans. They later went on to lose this game. HAHA

The 2 score difference with your offense on the field is a very impactful scenario.

I was reminded of this today against ASU. Yikes.
No coach that's left Louisville has ever succeeded anywhere else afterwards. Schnellenberger lasted one season at OU, Smith flamed out at Michigan State, Petrino imploded with the Falcons then couldn't keep it in his pants at Arkansas, and Strong bombed at Texas.
Because Louisville is small enough they can be rogue and get away with it. Just look at their basketball program...

OSU sure could have used that play at the end of this years game.
I can't believe that after this fuck up, Harrica is now my gym teacher and the worst on ive ever had, I want to put this video in my senior video, bet he will get a good kick out of it :)

That kicker would probably have missed it anyway. that was John Goss. he was 4 for 11 that year. Cost us the michigan game. John L kept blowing people out at the beginning of the year and never let the kid kick to see if he had it.
We found out he didn't have it during the clutch moments. They would have been better off with Haughey.

Also, the green part of the Ohio Stadium turf does not look close to the proper hue of grass.
