    Well, Vinnie was already great when he joined Zappa at 22 years old.

    Listening to this solo alone makes me appreciate how Jeff Beck wanted him in the band (Post Uncle Frank). Very complementary style. Equal parts wizardry.

    I don't know which artist said this nor can I quote it directly but it was along the lines you can't play balls to the wall all the time -- at this high level - you have to back off and let the listener anticipate or catch the listener off guard - whisper to roar, rhythmic to controlled chaos ... somebody in Deep Purple I think ... Colaiuta does it all beautifully here. Was he genius? I don't know but I'd sure put him in my top 100 of all time. He wasn't timid about stepping outside the conventional lines at all and always with an instinctive, educated, solid result. If not genius, that makes him great.

    Does anyone knows what kit was that? Was it the Recording Custom?

    • @michaelcaplin8969
      @michaelcaplin8969 4 года назад +1

      Looks like a pre recording custom. The earlier Yamaha drums, before the RC's are pretty popular drums nowadays, along with the first version of the RC.

      HArd to tell, but possibly a Tour custom. Or 8000 Tour custom. However the visual quality of this video is too bad.

    This is a strange one for me. The next year, Zildjian Day 1984, Vinnie’s playing was so utterly mind blowing - it’s staggering to watch to this day. However, this performance has none of that X factor other-planetary Vinnie in it. I believe he was extremely nervous during this performance. It seems like another person from the ‘84 performance.

    • @manictree5436
      @manictree5436 Год назад +1

      It's all about the poorly mixed drum sound. Everything is getting muddled together. In 1984, the sound mix was far superior and you hear everything such as the kick, up front, loud and clear.

    Why do drummers who usually play traditional switch to match grip

    • @samm1809
      @samm1809 9 лет назад +2

      Because they fucking can, really. Sometimes it's nice to give the side of your thumb a rest. That being said, I'm pretty sure Vinnie was playing matched most of the time at this point in his playing.

    • @samm1809
      @samm1809 9 лет назад

      ***** Well true, because Vinnie did used to play mostly matched, but what he's implying is also true in the broad sense. You see guys like Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd, Buddy Rich (despite his weird and nonsensical analysis of the difference in a video that is on youtube) and Vinnie, who play traditional grip as a blatantly ingrained aspect of their playing, all of a sudden use matched on some particular occasion or other. There's a million possible reasons. They also flip the sticks around to get a fatter sound, etc.

    • @samm1809
      @samm1809 9 лет назад

      ***** I've seen videos of it happening more recently, in their ages of 40 up. Are you a traditional grip snob or something? I'll note that I play trad by default. I know that Vinnie played matched exclusively at this time, but that aside...
