    I drove a fleet cab on the west side of Manhattan, in the seventies. It was exactly like the TV show taxi. In my garage we had a dispatcher who was just like Louie, they all acted like mean tyrants in their elevated cages. If you had a regular cab, you would have to wait until the guy on the day shift came back, if you didn't drive regular, you had to wait until a free cab came in, so it was first come first serve. Consequently you always had a lot of drivers hanging around waiting for a cab, and that was where the fun was. Sometimes the waiting time was two hours. There were so many characters, actor wanna bees, starving artists, musicians, students, has beens, immigrants and career drivers like Alex. Lots of stories and shenanigans. Some of the wildest times were with my fares, you met a lot of interesting people looking for a wild time, so sometimes you would join your fare on their escapades. I didn't have a TV, and didn't watch Taxi until it was in reruns, but I was amazed at how accurately it captured those days.

      I hacked in Orlando in the early '90s, and I agree with you on all counts. The only thing Taxi was missing was 30-40% of the drivers being 300lb behemoths that ruined the driver seat in every cab they ever drove. But, you're absolutely right on the garage being the center of the universe. I would always get there early and get signed in to get a better cab. It makes a difference in the tips having a nicer ride.

    • @zuperdee
      @zuperdee 8 месяцев назад

      @@EntertainMe463Judd probably didn’t want to mention Jeff because Jeff was NOT exactly let go under the best of circumstances. Jeff had serious drug problems, and there was a day when he was too high to perform, so they divided his lines for that episode among Danny and Christopher, who delivered them as well, if not better than Jeff could have, and that made the producers finally realize that Jeff was in fact expendable, so they fired him. As for Andy, he was still loved, which is probably why he stayed, even though Andy himself was not happy with the loss of creative control over his Foreign Man character that he originally created. The lesson here is: NOBODY is irreplaceable in show business, not even the most talented actor in the world who seems singularly qualified for a unique character, as Valerie Harper’s dismissal from the sitcom “Valerie,” later “The Hogan Family” proved. Furthermore, Jeff’s character was NOT even all that unique compared to Louie or Jim or even Elaine or Alex. Jeff himself even remarked once that his character was kind of generic compared to them, and that he was tired of being the butt of all the common and stereotypical struggling actor jokes.

    Taxi was a mindblower. Louis DePalma and Rev Jim we’re the best characters on that show along with Latka at times. So harsh. So funny. So touching. A landmark show really. That and Barney Miller were ABCs big guns along with Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley. And to think James Burrows followed this with Cheers. A true legendary producer of American comedy.

    Two thing more then anything made this show so good.
    1. Christopher loyyd.
    2. Danny Deveto.
    Nothing against all the other actors they did a very good job and the show wouldn't have worked without them, but it was the afore mentioned two that took it to greatness.
    That is all just my opinion of course.

      Danny D was the biggest reason why the show was as great as it was but everyone was great. I wouldn't put any of the other actors after DD above anyone else. It was truly an ensemble. All of James Furrows shows were look at Cheers which followed Taxi and then Friends which followed Cheers

      I agree. For a long time I remembered Danny Devito only because of "Taxi" - even though at the time he had already made a lot of movies. I knew Christopher Lloyd from "Back to the Future" but I became a fan watching Reverend Jim.

      @@TheSighphiguy IMO no one did the funny relatable tomboy kind of girl like Marilu did on "Taxi". A lot of people praise, for example, Julie Louis-Dreyfus on "Seinfeld" but I find her unfunny in the first seasons of the show... Marilu was steady and witty, smart funny.

    One of the greats!
    Like Night Court, Taxi took place mainly at night or evening... Those shows had a darker (not in a bad way) tone... With darker comedy. Cheers was like that also.
    Very different tones compared to let's say Who's The Boss or other sitcoms.

    When Jim's dad (played by Victor Buno, a rather large man) died and he was going thru his clothes. Jim pulled out a pair extremely large dress pants. He held them up and exclaimed that dad was so proud that he could still get into his wedding pants. The audience roared for nearly twenty seconds and Alex had to look on with a straight face.
