Take a look behind the scenes of the Halloween classic 'Hocus Pocus' Director: Kenny Ortega Cast: Bette Midler Sarah Jessica Parker Kathy Najimy Omri Katz Thora Birch Vinessa Shaw
It's kind of like the Christmas Movie, 'It's a Wonderful Life', it was a big flop at the time it first came out, and then became cemented in history, as a legacy, something that would be watched until the end of time, an absolute Classic. And in this case... a Halloween Classic :) FYI The actors who played the brother, sister, and girlfriend in this movie are still good friends till this day!
Anyone here sept 2019?? I love the older movies! like Willy Wonka and things like this because it wasn't all computer animated they actually had to do something physically to get the right shot..it wasn't just a green screen they actually built things to make them fly that is absolutely amazing.love it
TODAY'S movie industry would probably rely on CGI effects to create the flying effect, but the makers of this movie actually BUILT stuff and WORKED HARD and made the effect physically!
Do you honestly believe that CGI means the computer does everything for you? lol CG artists basically do the exact same things that these guys did. They just use computers to build it all instead.
You have little to no understanding of CGI. You would still have to hoist the actor and fly them. You would just recreate the scene around them. Wire flying is still widely used as are puppets, molds, blue screen etc...
I think if "Jurassic Park" was released a year later, this movie could've possibly got an Oscar nom for the visual effects. Still hold up amazingly after almost 30 years.
Indeed, I watched the movie again today. I'm 40 years old, the same age as Thora Birch, so I was 11 years when it came out. The cgi for the cat still holds up
Just as Home Alone is a must see for Christmas 🎄 Hocus Pocus is a must see for Halloween 🎃. It can’t be a great Halloween 👻 without this movie. It’s a must see. Thanks so much for sharing 👍👍👍🎥🍿👻
Yes, I'm exactly the same Hocus Pocus on Halloween, and Home Alone 1 & 2 on Christmas. But _not_ Hocus Pocus 2, or Home Alone 3 - I didn't like those one.
Anthony Weiss - although your comment was two years ago, the answer is no. The 90's, when that movie came out, was, and still is the last decade/era for great entertainment of TV shows. I don't even have cable.
In the documentary Who Do You Think You Are, SJP found out she’s descended from a woman who was accused of being a witch during the Salem Witch Trials.
I first watched this when u was maybe 6 or so, and Mary and Winifred sacred me so much. My parents sent me up to my bedroom, and I lay in my bed in my pitch black bedroom, and since it was pitch black I was even more scared because I thought Mary was gonna come eat me. I watched Hocus Pocus on Halloween again this year, I loved it so much. One of my favorite movies now! ❤
Right, I so agree. I think its going to be a horrible sequel, because it won't have Kenny Ortega director ing it and also none of the original witches. Which they said they would love to do a sequel, they said they been waiting for a long time to do one. Disney definitely can afford to make a good movie with them, they just want to make cheaper for tv, which is sad :(
I think Disney did this huge 'reunion' and anniversary bash this year to test the waters of a fan base. Unfortunately, I predict Disney will use pop tart teeny-boppers to 'star' in the remake of Hocus Pocus...ughh. As is prevalent in the soon-to-air television special on FREEFORM. The three original actresses are what made it classy.
I loved this movie so much as a kid and on into adulthood. I've recently had a new found love of it since introducing it to my 4 year old daughter. We watched it for the first time together on October 1st and now October 11th we've watched it over a dozen times per her request;
A lot of work and hassle goes into movie making, which is why people say people in show business make too much money they really have no idea what they are talking about.
9:35 oh no! The broom just hits Thora Birch on her head during the set of “Hocus Pocus” (1993) I feel so bad for her when Bette Midler stopped and noticed what happened but it was really nice of Bette came to check on Thora Birch just to make sure she’s okay. It didn’t say that on the Wiki page at all. good thing the broom hit didn’t happen in the film. anyone agree with me by feeling bad for Thora Birch?
Wait what about that puppet lady who was roasting the actors, she was pretty funny and creepy "you can stick pins into their bodies, they don't respond, they don't say a word, it's really nice." She seems charming
Not sure that's true, if you want someone flying you still need to suspend them in the air against a green screen. I will agree that they do use CGI where practical effects would look far more realistic though.
This just shows how talented some people are where they put in many hours of their hard work and dedication to create such a brilliant and iconic movie as Hocus Pocus:) Today’s world has lost so much quality due to current technology. Back then, as I was 7 years old when this movie came out, things were so exciting and full of life and wonder..I’m so grateful I was a kid when I was:) To all the people apart of this movie, thank you for making this masterpiece:) 😀✨👏🏼🎥🎭
This is fascinating! Hocus Pocus was and is one of my all time favourite films. I had it on a a vhs tape my grandad recorded for me. On the same tape I had my brother's year 5 nativity and the film Goodnight Mr Tom, another of my favourites.
I wish they kept all that equipment and made a sequel film in the mid-late 90s with the same trio of actresses 😞 I understand it may be hard to make a Hocus Pocus sequel in today's era since the actresses have aged a little, and since it may be hard to rebuild the flying sets, but they could've done it again in the 90s! I love Hocus Pocus nonetheless! 💚❤️💜
Soliban Bernal Yesssss this! And if they did bring the originals back they could just bring them back as they are now and haven’t done a youth spell yet.
As a viewers we thought that all scene was so easy but in reality and behind the scene so much works and effort just to make the film perfect and brilliant... kudos to the actor's especially the crew's behind each film that was made.... bravo...💪💪💪
I remember this show "Movie Magic!" Wish they would still show it...……… Bette Midler stated on this episode that she would make a part 2 to Hocus Pocus but I don't think she feels that way about it anymore lol.....
I watch this movie several times in October...one of my favorites since it came out in 1993...it used to be my niece and myself back then that would watch it. But now she's grown and I moved so I miss those days... Most of the movie was filmed in Salem and Plymouth Ma..the houses and the old 17 century homes are still there..
This movie Hocus Pocus the 1993 film should be on DVD instead of being on cable which is channel 38 on Freeform and i hate commercials alot i love this movie so much and my favorite character is Max Dennison 😊😊😊😊😊😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👍
They had no Idea that they were making history.
Isiah Perez so true I miss this film so much. Disney please a Hocus Pocus returns or something
No one ever does.
No one did, the film lost 15 million and the critics hated it
Pop Land and now it's a cult 🔮🙂
It's kind of like the Christmas Movie, 'It's a Wonderful Life', it was a big flop at the time it first came out, and then became cemented in history, as a legacy, something that would be watched until the end of time, an absolute Classic. And in this case... a Halloween Classic :) FYI The actors who played the brother, sister, and girlfriend in this movie are still good friends till this day!
One of the best Halloween movies of all time!
The 1 and only
How I miss the 90's! This movie is a classic! They all did a great job!
The flying scenes all looked so believable, and realistic.
9:38 I love how Bette comes completely out of her character to check on Dani it just shows how caring she is compared to winnie 😂
Shes so sweet
My right ear really enjoyed this.
+Commet Dfsf ROFL mine too XD!!!! Also, 17:33-17:41 WTH that facial expression haha!
+BurningLanguages I´m sorry for the sound! I did not notice before uploading
MrReto2812 It's alright :P it doesn't take away from the video at all.
great! :)
+Commet Dfsf Oh good, I thought my earbuds were busted lol
Aww Bette apologising to the little girl is so sweet
It sure is really nice but accidents happen, I feel so bad for Thora Birch during the set but she didn’t deserve to get hit on the head with a broom
Winifred flying too high, then frantically apologizing is probably my favorite thing to ever exist
9:35 Bette is so kind to make sure Thora is ok can we see how caring Midler is compared to Winifred😅
I want a sequel with the original witches!! Not a remake with new people 😓
Veronica Ramirez they are going to make a sequel will the original people
I agree!!
No leave my favorite Halloween movie alone😔 I don't think it will be good at all
When will the new one be released?
Veronica Ramirez I couldn’t agree more!! Yup yup!! 👏🏾🎃🍂
Anyone here sept 2019?? I love the older movies! like Willy Wonka and things like this because it wasn't all computer animated they actually had to do something physically to get the right shot..it wasn't just a green screen they actually built things to make them fly that is absolutely amazing.love it
Truth
Sara Brant No October
TODAY'S movie industry would probably rely on CGI effects to create the flying effect, but the makers of this movie actually BUILT stuff and WORKED HARD and made the effect physically!
Johnny The Pianist Clearly you haven't tried doing any kind of animation or 3D modeling.
You sound like a magatard
I agree! I prefer movies from the 80's and 90's for that reason. Today's movies look fake.
Can we all applaud Bette @9:35 for making sure Thora was all right?
Yeah, sure
This movie is a masterpiece. It looks so good. I love the fabric of the cloaks moving and the color. All wonderful.
It's a classic but surprisingly it was a disaster when it was first released and they lost millions.
I loved watching this! Is it just me or is there absolutely nothing like this (informative) on TV anymore?
Phillip Rodriguez If you still watch T.V., you already fucked your life up.
Anthony Weiss - although your comment was two years ago, the answer is no.
The 90's, when that movie came out, was, and still is the last decade/era for great entertainment of TV shows.
I don't even have cable.
What is this "TV" thing of which you speak? Is it some kind of venereal disease endemic to the tepuis of South America?
@@tanyalake9152 yup boy I think humanity is doomed we’re becoming drones
Truly a work of art when you see all the aspects of a movie
this should be in the dvd
I know right?! :/
Loved this movie as a kid. I was 6 years old when Hocus Pocus was first released. I'm 28 years old now and I still love it.
the most beautiful movie ever!
In the documentary Who Do You Think You Are, SJP found out she’s descended from a woman who was accused of being a witch during the Salem Witch Trials.
I first watched this when u was maybe 6 or so, and Mary and Winifred sacred me so much. I watched Hocus Pocus on Halloween again this year, I loved it so much. One of my favorite movies now! ❤
Right it was traumatizing when I watched this
Watching this cause I’m mourning the fact that Disney is remaking this without Kenny Ortega, instead of giving it the sequel we all want. RIP.
Right, I so agree. I think its going to be a horrible sequel, because it won't have Kenny Ortega director ing it and also none of the original witches. Which they said they would love to do a sequel, they said they been waiting for a long time to do one. Disney definitely can afford to make a good movie with them, they just want to make cheaper for tv, which is sad :(
Melanie Anne Ahern That makes me sad and very mad!
Melanie Anne Ahern not true at all
*cries*
Hocus Pocus 2 with the original actors and actresses!!?
Officially happening 👍
Its happening lol
Such amazing group effort.
There’s a reason this movie’s a classic even 30 years later.
The puppets are soooo awesome! They would be fantastic hanging from my ceiling..especially during Halloween!
also how cool would it be that they were battery powered to move like the puppets
0:17 the laugh from COD Zombies!
I loved this movie so much as a kid and on into adulthood. I've recently had a new found love of it since introducing it to my 4 year old daughter. We watched it for the first time together on October 1st and now October 11th we've watched it over a dozen times per her request;
A sequel with the original witches would be EPIC!!! 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
A lot of work and hassle goes into movie making, which is why people say people in show business make too much money they really have no idea what they are talking about.
This is great! Seeing the technicians and workmen behind the scenes helping in the making of this movie!
Amok! Amok, amok, amok! (No thread is complete without at least one recital of the best line in the whole movie!)
“It’s just a bunch of Hocus Pocus” iconic line right there 🖤🔮
This movie is legendary, it's great to see how much fun these guys are having with their characters 😀
THIS > anything CGI ❤️❤️❤️
We need this film on blue-ray with behind the scenes...if there is let me know. I just love this film every Hallows Eve it's a must watch film.
Hope you got your copy now
If it makes things any better the flying in this movie was fucking awesome!! I loved it!
I think they could make a second one with the same characters. Isn't that why we have special effects and makeup.... just sayin' LOL.
SHARON R. N. should make a prequel
Wait what about that puppet lady who was roasting the actors, she was pretty funny and creepy
"you can stick pins into their bodies, they don't respond, they don't say a word, it's really nice."
She seems charming
Runon Tales hahahaha I read your comment as that exact moment happened!
One of the best Halloween movies of all time ! this is interesting
Today in 2016 high-wires & puppets are not used anymore because now we have everything computerized. But these are pretty cool techniques.
And you see it every time...
Not sure that's true, if you want someone flying you still need to suspend them in the air against a green screen.
I will agree that they do use CGI where practical effects would look far more realistic though.
looked better back then
They used rigs and wires for Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and Oz the Great and Powerful, and most flying shots in Pan
I love this movie!!!!!! 😱.
Blue Eyed girl.1992. Same it’s my favorite Halloween movie
This just shows how talented some people are where they put in many hours of their hard work and dedication to create such a brilliant and iconic movie as Hocus Pocus:) Today’s world has lost so much quality due to current technology. A classic. My favorite childhood movie
This is fascinating! Hocus Pocus was and is one of my all time favourite films. I had it on a a vhs tape my grandad recorded for me. On the same tape I had my brother's year 5 nativity and the film Goodnight Mr Tom, another of my favourites.

A prequel would be great, to meet Billy alive and their mother
Soliban Bernal Yesssss this! And if they did bring the originals back they could just bring them back as they are now and haven’t done a youth spell yet.
all that hardwork paid off, it came together so seamlessly. A Halloween cult classic!
Makes me so ticked they won't make a sequel. They will make a 100 Friday the 13 but won't make a sequel to what we want to see
I watched this yesterday and I have it recorded, I’ll watch them non stop and never get old of it. Sara is my favorite.
09/29/2022 hocus pocus 2 came out - wow time truly flies ❤️💚💜
It’s been 29 years now but I still watch the first film
I can’t wait to watch this again soon! At the top of my list!!💕💕💕🥰
As a viewers we thought that all scene was so easy but in reality and behind the scene so much works and effort just to make the film perfect and brilliant... kudos to the actor's especially the crew's behind each film that was made.... bravo...💪💪💪
Anyone found 14:15 shadyyyy af lmaooo
thanks for this gem
They had graphic tablets in '93? wicked
10:33 It never occurred to me that I could fall. I love that!
Why the hell is this not on the Anniversary Blu-Ray?!
There is
thx for posting this! I remember watching this on TV back in 1993!
I LOVED Discovery's "Movie Magic" growing up. Thanks so much for sharing...!
I've watched Hocus Pocus so many times already
“Now when I operate her, in my mind I think that I’m Sarah Jessica Parker” *raises eyebrows*
lolol
I love this film!
They all did a damn good job!
I remember this show "Movie Magic!" Wish they would still show it...……… Bette Midler stated on this episode that she would make a part 2 to Hocus Pocus but I don't think she feels that way about it anymore lol.....
The 90s had the best movies!!!!!!
Come little children
I’ll take thy away
Into a land of enchanted....
Use thy voice Sarah, fill the sky,
Bring those little brats to die !
Kathy Najimy is a Lebanese American!👊🏼🇱🇧🇱🇧🇱🇧
She likes women?
What a great video! Thank you.
I am a Sanderson LoL Sharon Sanderson I love this movie my kids get a kick out of it
The special effects were very good. I think they still hold up.
17:35
"in my mind, I think Sarah Jessica Parker"
Full stop.
No conclusion.
Relatable.😂
I always love this movie!
They still used the wires and flying harnesses for the sequel. :)
my left ear is asking whatsup?
Just watched this movie watch it every October
1693 was in the 17th century
Robert Bonds exactly
Robert Bonds it’s the way it is because you still have to include the first century
I love this movie
That's was so time ago.
Things change over the years...
Seriously people this need 500 million view
I remember this movie and it's on Disney plus but it's got a sequel. I think this is a great halloween movie for everyone.
Did anyone see Bette Midler accidentally hit Thora Birch in the head? Watch again at the 9:33 minute mark where she accidentally hit her.
I saw that but I feel so bad for Thora Birch during the set, everyone will know that accidents happen
@@alexisblake2634 Can you please follow my RUclips?
Hocus pocus please make the second one I would love to see it
I miss pre CGI days where artists had to be more innovative in their techniques.
I used to love this show, it was the same 7 movies over and over lol
So cool 😎
Oh My God! I NEED those puppets!!!!!
YAS🥰✨
In a recent interview with SJP she we asked about the actors in this movie, and she pretended to not remember the child actor's names 🤥
Much better than hocus pocus 2 imo. This movie was and still is a masterpiece 🎭
Would have been cold if Max and Alison were the new parents. Missed opportunity
I cant wait for the second movie
Angel Jordan still waiting hahaha
The making of a cult classic 😍
This movie Hocus Pocus the 1993 film should be on DVD instead of being on cable which is channel 38 on Freeform and i hate commercials alot i love this movie so much and my favorite character is Max Dennison 😊😊😊😊😊😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👍
I have this movie on DVD and also I watched the Sequel on Disney+ it’s not the same without the original cast
This movie came out when I was 10. I wish I could be 10 again. Not nowadays, back in the early '90s. Kids today have shit for entertainment.
I'm crying.
One of my favorite movies
Omg Kenny looked so different
