- How to make an Origami Cherry Blossom Ball, design by Tomoko Fuse (who else could make such amazing designs...). Use at least 16x16 cm squares or be ready for some serious paper wrestling... Believe me what you see in the video is not much hassle compared to making one from from 9x9 cm memo block papers. In the end I got better at assembling it but still it remains a lot of hassle... well worth it :D

I just finished this! My tip: in assembling the little "pyramid", whenever you are trying to insert the third piece into the first piece, cut off half of the part of the third piece that'll go into the first part(if you're actually making this, you'll probably understand better), which would make life a LOT easier!
literally cried doing this
This origami kusudama is awesome. I loved it from the moment i saw it. It was probably 3-4 years ago but i never had the guts to fold one (the modules were hard).
Yesterday, i grabbed all my guts i could own, grabbed 30 sheets of quite small paper (5 cm or smaller i believe) and started folding one. The modules turned out great, i had my own folding style (fast and accurate) , and , by the time i was done 2 hours already passed. Whew, so much fun! And , after finishing, i started assembling them
I tried assembling this once a while back, and had troubles with it...
I wanted to try it again last night with the units I had made. And assembled it correctly. I was pissing myself.
And I had forgotten how to fold them.
And it took me ages to find this video again. Frustrating, but now I am happy.
Thanks very much for uploading this.
yay!!! i did it! 8 hours later.... uhm to anyone trying to do this may i suggest tape?? yeah I know its not the "right" thing, but when i was sticking the pieces together i taped them on the inside. This made the whole ball more stable and easier to assemble puls the tape is on the inside so no one can see
I have been making Origami models since 2012 when I had knee replaced, and I love to make the smallest models as my hand can handle. I successfully made this model with 2" squares paper. Thank for your instruction, I enjoy .
ban nguyen wow well done. you should take pictures then post them on origami Facebook page and make a link here. I would be interested to see. I have big sausage fingers so no chance of me doing that haha. I often resort to cutting or folding flaps shorter and glueing :p but I love origami too!!! especially kusudamas. models are so hard!!!
j pres, Will have friend who are familiar with Facebook post it for me. I have some of mine on shared Icloud from Ipad, do you know how to look it up?
No i don't have apple unfortunately.
Took me some time though, but the origami is awesome.........thanks for the tutorial
There it was. My oportunity to finish off the beast. Happily, only 1 ore 2 got out of theyr places , but it was enough for me to burst in rage mode. Some neighbors were screaming "SHUT UP! IT'S NIGHTIME AND YOU'RE WAKING UP OUR KIDS" (yes, i started at 2 pm and probably finished at 10 pm) I haven't quit. I kept going on. And there it was, THE LAST FLAP!. I carefully took my toothpick and handled it as if it was a jewel. A precious, PRECIOUS jewel. And it was done....
I made this a while ago with 7x7cm paper. I remember that it was a pain in the ass to assemble and I thought that I would never do it again. But here I am again with a pile of paper =D
Getting those corners together after all the units are assembled is pretty tricky. I'm gonna cheat with a little double sided tape on my first one, but I'll come up with a technique eventually. Thanks for posting this model, barbabellaatje. And thanks for the clear folding instructions.
Definitely worth it! I had finished it an hour or two after I posted that comment. The ball is a tad smaller than my head. It turned out great. I even got a paper cut from it, lol!
one of the prettiest sonobes ever! and kinda hard to find instructions 4 it, thanx 4 sharing! now its available 2 any1 2 make 4 free! iv always wanted 2 make this, time 2 get folding, gud clear tutorial! big paper with 2 colours is easy 2 see! :- )
I could follow you up to 03:21 . It took me too long to understand what you were doing.
Then I started messing with the module until I suddenly did it unconsciously, and then I realize that it seems more complicated than what it actually is.
Anyways, thank you for the video. It's always a pleasure to fold along with you.
This one takes some time and effort but the results are amazing. I will definitely make more of these. Thanks for the great instructions and the motivation. I am also trying to make a small one (need more practice with assembling it first though). My advice to anyone struggling with this one is to keep trying. You will see amazing results.
just put a little bit of glue on each tab before you stick it in the pocket
it helps the models last longer too :D
This was awesome! Totally easy if you pause and rewind the video a whole bunch. Im so proud of the end result.... And i used 3x3in paper. Awesome.
5 minutes in I was thinking "Huh, seems simple enough. Do you need like, ten of these pieces? N O apParEntLy you need 30. nah, this is to high level for me right now." I loved the tutorial though, so far it was the easiest to understand origami instruction I've found.
Most of these will be 30 if you want to make the icosahedrons. You can do this with 12 modules though to make the octahedron. Just connect 4 pyramids together instead of the 5 you see here.
I was proud that i finally completed all modules and i was so happy that i thought to myself: "This is going to be a piece of cake". I started out by doing the 3 unit assembly , wich turned out harder than expected. "ah, no problem. i'm going to be carefull". I assembled the first pentagon of units and stabilised them too. It took me a while., but i was happy with the result so i proceeded. It looked nice and it started looking nicer and nicer, but , halfway through, something happened.
Wooohooooh! Did it! Spent 8 hours or so, but totally worth it! I made it out from 21x21 cm so it came out a quite big ball. Thank you for your tutorial!
And to @5dsfan4ever I have to say I didn't really need to use tape. If you use properly your toothpick (!!!) it will be stable even without tape. I throw it :D
Ohhhh, the moment I saw this I thought of the Queen of modular origami Tomoko Fuse!
This looks like another one of her sonobe-type variations. One of her better ones too!
Looks like it takes quite a while; really nice results though. Thanks for this :D
i tried to do this a month ago but failed... after doing many other kusudamas and origami, i went back here today and tried... and succeeded! thanks barbabellaatje ^_^
Thank you for the video! I got mine finished and it is beautiful. Assembly is a bit of a challenge but it seemed to go easier just working on building the triangles instead of focusing on the 5 flower points and the toothpick helped a lot! Just be sure not to invert it as you build it. Make sure the pyramids stick up!
I watched and then tried with stop motion intervals... I got frustrated, so i decided to do it on my own with a little playing around. just by using the folded grid, I was successful in getting the pieces done and connected :)
Duck yeah, i did it :D The final corners was really hard, but even my alco hands didn't stop me :D Thank you for tutorial!
And i used 10x10 cm paper, it's not that hard :3
Thanks for the tutorial! :) Assembly is very difficult.
The units are really fun to make once you get the hang of it. However assembly is driving me crazy - this is one of the hardest ones I have ever had to put together. However it the units looks so damn cute I have to keep going. Thanks for instructions - they have been very easy to understand. I've had so much fun making this and I'm not even finished yet!
I love the toothpick thing! I'm always having so much trouble getting those flaps to go in the dang pockets..Great post! I will be trying this soon! :D
If you wanted to do three colors would you have to do 10 of each? Just want to make sure that three colors actually work well together and have a pattern
yeah just like 5dsfan4ever said use tape but you do have to put it on the inside i just used it temporarily to hold it together then took it off, really helps.
thumbs up if one of your favorite origami artists is tomoko fuse
took me like 15 minutes to learn it because theres a few parts that where tricky but after doing the individual peaces a few times i got the hang of it and made the origami cherry flower just under an hour
awesome! but believe me, leroy's origami chrysanthemum seems way harder to assemble for me. the last bit was the hardest :-D i will try this one!
It was painfull to see my work falling appart, but i still kept going. I was enraged, my hands were shaking, my blood was going as fast as it ever went through myself; i was boiling...
And finally, after what seemed YEARS of struggle and pain, i was left with ONLY ONE SINGLE MODULE on the table. I was overjyed, but my last module was severed because of a failed attemt at assembling it. So i refolded 1 module, and struggled to put it in that gap. 2 pokets, 2 flaps, 1 single module.
@JaredLetoFanGirl When I make them with strings for hanging, I loop some string through a button, and before I close up the ball I put the button inside one of the "pyramids" with the loop going through the peak to the outside. This way I don't need to worry about a knot sliding out of the ball.
holy crap...i really wanna make this now!! it looks so awesome! i love folding origami...especially modular...but i broke my arm cant fold anymore
:(
What kind of paper did you use for the thumbnail? It's awesome!
Hi! Just a question, can you also hang this cherry blossom ball on a string? How do you attach the string to the ball?
first five modules assembled! all comes slightly together! i will make a video of mine!
At the 17th module, they started falling apart. I , as an experienced origamiist that i am, thought that it was normal because i faced those things ear;ier with my other folding experiences. So, i reassembled them and went on. And, the more i assembled , the more would just fall off. Some modules were almost torn because of the brutality i started to work with. I was left with only 5 modules on the table at that point, and LOTS of gaps in the model. I screamed everytime something went wrong
I made it with 7x7 papers, and it ended so beautiful. But I wrestled a lot with the papers :P
Great tutorial...
But it is difficult! Took me 3 attempts to figure out what I was doing wrong, but I made my first piece :P Now just 29 more to go...
@sasukeluva48 The paper just has to be a square. 6cm by 6cm, 8cm by 8cm,etc.
Hi, i need your origami to do some kind of box for school. do you think that if i put something fragile inside this thing is gonna break, if falls in the floor?
adoro o seu trabalho. com esforço e dedicação consigo acompanhar o passo a passo e ter a satisfação de concluir o trabalho!! obrigado
thats gonna be a challenge... cant wait to try it out!
@LayRae87 i think that to make a larger size you should use a larger piece of paper for each part.I made one in 5 hours and came out a lor larger than the one iin this clip.
You made this video so clear, I mean you explained everything so well that I think I'll be able to do it =D Thank u very much
Made another one today. Its really quite impressive. Glad to hear you can get it together with the smaller paper - I'm still struggling with that (it keeps falling apart) but am determined to keep trying. I really enjoy all the modular origami you post and am always on the look out for some more design ideas.
I tried to do it with 9x9 cm papers but now it's to hard to put it together (especially the triangles) ;(
Barely half through but everytime i try to add any other module, another 3 get loose :|
Damn it, might need to duct tape them from the inside or use paperclips.
Any better suggestion or maybe some tips/hints?
lol, blue cherry blossoms??
nice job!!!
if u ran out of origami paper can we do it with stickey notes?
question, always with 30 ? can we make it smaller?
OMG!!! i was thinking what if i would make this with those 270 pieces like sonobe units!
If I use 15x15 would it still be very hard?
I'm gonna have to do that XD
I have similar paper to what he's using, but it's 15x15cm instead of 16x16cm. I'm almost out of the shade of blue he's using though, only have 4, not 30. So I'll be making it in multiple colors.
does this look good with every module being a different color
hey is it hard to assemble , hey and is the assembly like a icosahedron you know tomoko fuse
imagine a cherry blossom tree out of all of these
0.o
to make it slow pause the video with you mouse first and the hold on space all the video
how long does it take to complete? two hours?
i need to watch the same video 30 times:O
How long did it take you to fold 30 pieces? :o That seems like so long, haha.
MAN. You rock. Thanks for the tip.
People, thumb up his comment so everyone can see it!
Woohoo! made it at last!, thx a lot barbabellaatje for the tutorial!
Hey.... I'm using 4 by 4 Inch paper..... Is that okay??
@sasukeluva48 It would be exceptionally fiddly. You'd be better going for a bigger piece like 8cm x 8cm or 9cm x 9cm.
Hahahahah, as soon as I completed the base one, I already forgot how to make it XD
Does it work with 6cm paper?
U shood make more videos like this it looks pretty
Wow thats great although its gonna make up alot of my time, but its really worth
when i first this i was stumped its really cool
This is beautiful.
Is it a sonobe variation?
How many papers do we need?
I wanted to asked, can I use glue to stop the modules from separating?
of course
This was easy to make👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
HI! love the video! I did it but i made the octehedron kind! see u next time!
@kiwication I am interested in ur mystical 10 times more advanced magic origami model can u tell me what it is so I can look it up
can i do it with bigger paper?
how do you film like that. i want to try it out
its looked easy up until it said i need to make thirty. i was gnna use this in a science project and i need like ten of those. i guess i will keep searching
My advices to some random initiate or adventure seeker:
DO NOT USE SMALL PAPER BECAUSE IT IS HARD AS $#(%
that's all. besides that, use a toothpick . It's helpful because you dont have fingers that small.
But, if you're courageous enough: don't be. You're better off that way.
Nice... Looking good, '30 of these required'
T>T
Hi! I really want to do this but I fear that my inexperience will prove to be a problem. Do you think a beginner can do this? XD And can you give me any tips? It'll be my first time to do such an elaborate origami so I'm a bit nervous. I mean I only do the paper box, airplane and you know, the common and usual stuff. XD
Thank you!
Not the video creator, but I'd say go for it.
I've been doing origami for over 10 years now and I have to say the only way you get better is to challenge yourself. Attempt it, and it's okay if you fail. Either continue trying or find something else, until you try again. Someday it will click. I tried very hard to make a rabbit once but I just couldn't do it, and then two years later I had no problems at all. If you really want to do it, then you will be able to, if you keep at it.
Of course, it might not take you two years, since people are different. If you're unsure of what you're doing, I'd just advise not to use origami paper since those are expensive and it's probably better to train with something else.
I believe in you!
Who was like this looks easy and then u see 30 pieces and ripped the paper ????
30, really?! It took me just 7 minutes to make only 1. LOL going to take me a LONG time.
where would u get the paper to make the ball
i love these 30 unit modular origamis but the last units always make me really angry to assemble haha.
with any size of papier?
I did it!
@shaksable wow you really need to improve your memory! i normally remember origamis that is like 10 times more advanced on my 1st try!
pero en el video deberian incluir cuantas piezas se utilizan para poderlo hacer
@anmartjbaby if you dont have origami paper, make a sqaure out of printer paper, and rip it into 4ths and soon u will have 30+ sqaers
thankyou for showing me how to make this all my friends are
inprested
FINALLY DID IT
WOW that is cool but i think ill make it when i turn into a super origami pro right know im a pro. :)
that's a useful tip, thanks
yay!!
thnxs for the tut!!!!!
so excited to get starteddd!! ;]
what country r u from???
i love you (not really) but thank i can understand this one better thin the rest.
Plz make more videos like this one( but of cause not the same Origami thing)
thank you
Beautiful!!!!!
