CPU: AMD vs Intel AMD - Cheap but effective, good for people on a budget Intel - will put a bigger hole in your wallet but better FPS and the old saying "You get what you pay for" applies. As is typically the case with most computer parts the larger the number the better the performance you can get out of your CPU. Amount of cores allow more simultaneous processes to run while a higher frequency allows for bulkier programs to run more smoothly. Graphics: AMD vs Nvidia AMD: Same applies as with CPU. Nvidia: Less compatibility issues due to better driver support (For example I could never get Borderlands 2 to work with AMD, not sure if it was ever patched but I just gave up trying). Higher FPS from your games, but again usually a bit more pricey. Same as with the CPU mostly what you want to look for here is larger numbers. Make sure it says "3.0" and not "2.0." Something that is a 2.0 but has larger numbers may still overall have poorer performance than a 3.0 style. Memory: If you're going pre-built this won't be a big concern to you. I'll just give you a few things to consider, though. DDR4 is the latest style, try to get that. The number following DDR4 is a larger is better situation. Getting really technical there is also timings, when looking at timings the lower the numbers the better.
