  • A different way to prep pecans for shelling and for an extra treat try a few while still warm. This works by expanding and softening the husks and it also makes the edible "seed" more flexible when removing from the husk so you are more likely to remove complete seeds or halves. It should be done when the pecans are cool enough to handle. This method also reduces the dust and fragments from cracking. Let the seeds dry before storing.

How is this a life hack?? you are using a specific nut cracker... That's more like, "this life hack uses a nut cracker" err...
Life hacks are things that you can do without the use of special tools.
Also, boiling them is just destroying all the precious enzymes.

So what exactly does boiling them first do, other than simply cooking the nut, so it's not raw/green? Does it make them easier to crack, or hold together better or something?

My experience that I've seen and still do with the small Native Pecans is to Boil the Pecans first. It doesn't hurt the meat unless the shell has a crack. Small Native Pecans has a very hard Shell. If you have them cracked by an establishment, it destroys the meat where you get pieces and not half a. Yes, I went that route. Not good for these types. Boil for about 10 minutes and it softens the Shell and I use a pair of handheld Nut Cracker. I snip ends and crack Vertically and Horizontally several times and you'll get Halves. Still looking for better ways than this but so far the BEST methods for these little guy's. Hope this helps. It has for me.

One more hint with the small Native Pecans, after boiling work with small batches. Once shell cools, it gets hard again. I just need to figure out how to tackle the membrane inside. That is just as hard to deal with just like the Shell. Work with small batches at a time. It works but still more time consuming vs others but the better Nut and flavor to me.

You just killed all the enzymes in the nuts, sir.

Maybe, although seeds can be pretty hardy. Anyway, most of what we use pecans for are cooked recipes where the exposed nuts reach temps well above the boiling point.

You can also soak them in cold water overnight if your worried about killing enzymes.

What enzymes?! lol enzymes are proteins and they aren’t “alive”, so you’d be denaturing them, not killing them. Which isn’t necessarily always bad nor does it mean less is gained from consumption if that makes sense. Also often times nuts contain enzyme inhibitors that can cause digestive issues when ingested…cooking them alleviates this.
