If you're planning to use the sun as a heat source to germinate your pecan. You'll have to start in the month of April (if you're living in Western hemisphere of the world. iv had good luck sproting peacans i just soak 2 -3 weks the place in soil on its side ( THIS IS IMPORTANT ) he reason is the tap root will have to grow in a u turn ihave seen i where the tap was growing out of he soil so plant on its side the root will go down stem will gow up ( THIS IS IMPORTANT) never put in a small pot by the time yu see stem growin out of soil tap root may be 3-4 inches long if its in a small pot tap will be growing in a coil not down i start with at least 1gal pot and larger if i have them every tim e you have to change to a larger pot you may injure the tap root if you have a warm place you can start in jan im in zone 7 south carolina MILD winters once you see stem let it have about 1hr warm sun if you can but dont leave it out about 5-6 weeks or less you should see 2 leaves
