Home: The Book Turned Movie

- Many are familiar with DreamWork's Home. But what most people don't know is that the movie was actually based on a Book titled, "The True Meaning Of Smekday". Which even got a sequel just a year before the movie had released. So this video looks over the differences between the movie and book, and seeing if the movie is a worthwhile adaptation to it's source material.
I didn't realize Home still had such a big following! I love seeing everyone have the same reaction i did when i saw the books art for the first time. Thank you all for the support on this video. And I have several more Books to Movie videos in the works. So definitely subscribe if you wanna check those out when they go live 😊
I just found out people actually liked home and I could not be happier, I love this movie
@@hunterannett967same
The only DreamWorks movie I knew was based off of a book before the movie came out was the wild robot
After seeing the Thumbnail I thought this was gonna be a like "This book is actually a horror book" type thing but I am happy it was not
I thought the exact same thing cause the Boov really look so off putting in the books art style. But nah, they're still quirky little aliens. The Gorg though are very different. I didn't go too much into them because of spoiler reasons. But I showed a page featuring one of them, and they're not a bait and switch like in the movie. They're very much a war loving race that conquers planets. And they're humanoid reptiles rather than being little starfish fellas.
@@Patbacknitro2 I was going to ask about that before like "Why where the gorg not really talked about" cause they looked almost nothing like their movie counterpart lol
@@YinYang-ep9lc I wanted to avoid a lot of the big spoilers of the books plot for those wanting to check it out. So it's kinda hard to talk about them when there's a few notable plot reveals involving them.
Junji Itos Home 😂
The 2007 version looks like bro was named "Oh No"
😂
🤣😂
Oh shit
Oh f*ck
Imagine instead of Oh alerting a random alien species, he contacted the martians from war if the worlds 💀💀
I mean it's not off the table lol. At the end of the movie we see his message contacted several alien species from across the universe.
“The chances of anything coming from mars are a million to one, but still they come”
Yeah, they aren’t beating those ones

THATS WHY I REMEMBERED SEEING A POSTER FOR THE MOVIE LIKE A YEAR BEFORE IT CAME OUT!! I remember seeing a poster for the movie in 2014 and thinking the movie was out for like a full year before seeing trailers for it lol
What did it look like?
@@Cupcake_and-friends288it was pretty much a normal poster for the movie lol there werent any weird differences or anything
@@ChappyMonster oh okie dokie!
I swear I remember watching a clip from the movie in 2012 in a pirate dvd.
This movie was literally my childhood, I watched it ALL THE TIME when I was little.
How old are you? The movie only came out a few years ago
@JuanPiece. Uh. Sorry to burst your bubble, but the films 9 years old.
@@grunkle_iz_incidentof_1978 how has it been that long?
@@JuanPiece. Ah! Whoopsie. I’m 12. I KNOW I’M YOUNG-
@@grunkle_iz_incidentof_1978 I’m 12. A meer pre-teen 🥲
at this point I would believe you if you told me that every single dreamworks film is a book adaptation
More than you'd think lol
The majority of them are
Shrek, Home, How to Train Your Dragon, Boss Baby, Prince of Egypt, the upcoming movie Wild Robot, I’m pretty sure Abominable is a book
Boss baby?
@@lord_bobanewname4069 yep I did a video on it before this one
@@SCPguy-06I understand the fairy tales and puss in boots side of it, but when was there a Shrek book?
I never knew that Home was based off of a book, neither was I aware about Boss Baby either
Glad this movie is finally getting attention :)

Man I love this movie it gets to much hate in my opinion
I don't think it deserves any hate. Amazing voice casting, fun characters and story. Definitely one of the better DreamWorks films.
agreed
I thought the movie was cute
It gets hate? I never would have known.
Don't know why people hate it it's one of my favorite movies
In my opinion
Home soundtrack (the songs) are one of the most heart warming tracks I've heard and still listen to this day
Same, can’t get enough of Towards the Sun
@@rossbob4215 that song defines "Oh you're leaving me? Hold on I got the song just for the situation"
I've been waiting for someone to say this.
I used to watch this movie every night when I was a kid so now I really wanna read this book!
Omg I also used to watch it every night as a kid
do it! amazing read 10/10
As someone who was obsessed with this movie as a kid and now obsessed with this realistic monster type style I've gotta look at this!!
I would not have believed it was originally a book if you didn’t tell me. Never thought it was originally a book, so thanks for telling me
This was the first movie that made me cry! Still to this day
Home was, and still is my favourite childhood movie of all time. I recently bought, read, and finished a copy of the true meaning of smekday and absolutely loved it! Overall I do also love the altered story line of the movie however, and don't find the book nostalgic like the movie. I also noticed the slushie machine in home has the same colors as the one seen in the 2006 movie open season (another childhood fave), and that Tip and Oh have a similar friendship dynamic as Boog and Elliot.
Definitely plan on talking about Open Season, and it's sequels, someday. I also found out it's actually getting a new TV show soon. Except it'll be in a new 2D style rather than being CG.
The Show is already released in Australia, and is actually pretty good. Compared to the sequels is amazing, but nothing beats the 2006 og! I stumbled upon it when i was browsing through ABC iView (a free Australian streaming app with content from ABC (Australian broadcasting corporation) channels.) And home actually got an animated Netflix series in 2016!
Imagine if a sequel to Home was made- Here's my Prediction
Home 2: Smek For President
Release Date: 2027 (To Coincide with the first books 20th Anniversary)
Premise: Sometime has passed since the first movie ended, Oh is now living with Lucy and Tip Tucci in Boston. The Humans and Boov Aliens have now reached a peace agreement and now they share Earth. Some of the Boov Aliens have relocated their colonies to various places such as The Moon, Venus, Mars, Ganymede and Titan. The Boov Aliens even have their own city high above Boston. But when the Boov Aliens adopt human politics Oh's old idol and arch nemesis Smek uses this as an opportunity to have his revenge against Oh and Tip.
Cast
Jim Parsons- Oh, Leader of the Boov Aliens and the main protagonist
Rhianna- Tip Tucci, Oh's bestie and the secondary protagonist who had just recently graduated from middle school and is about to go into high school but has decided not to go to college in order to spend time with Oh.
Jenefier Lopez- Lucy Tucci, Tip's caring mother
Frank Welker- Pig-Cat, The Tuccis pet Calico Cat
Matt L. Jones- Kyle, a Boov police officer
Eden Taylor-Draper- Jasmine, one of Tip's friends
Alessia Cara- Amelia, one of Tip's friends
Peyton List- Hannah, one of Tip's friends
Ron Funches- Sharzod, a Boov Alien that Tip had booby-trapped in the first movie
Steve Martin- Smek, Former leader of the Boov Aliens and the main antagonist of Home 2: Smek For President
Johnny Galecki- Dan Landry, the secondary antagonist of Home 2: Smek For President who takes credit for conquering the Gorg and his Smek's side kick.
James Chase- Bill, a blue Boov Alien that Oh and Tip befriend to fight defeat Smek and Dan Landry and put a stop to their revenge plan
Mark Whitten- Eye-patch Greg and Garfeldt, 2 blue Boov aliens that unwillingly become Smek's minions
Nolan North- Traffic Cone Larry, a blue Boov alien who uses a traffic cone for a hat that unwillingly becomes Smek's Minion.
Grey Griffin- Dianne, a 10 ft tall muscular 4 armed alien who is one of Tip's friends.
Rob Paulsen and April Winchell- Additional Voices
NOTE: Some of the characters from the first movie and the TV series make a cameo appearance.
Kinda sounds similar to the tv series minus the politics thing
That's because the TV show used some elements from the second book. As well as some stuff from the first book that the movie didn't bring up.
@@Patbacknitro2 as much as I dislike the tv show the book actually sounds interesting! Thanks for the book recommendation
Tip skipped high school?
That thumbnail sent me into a fight or flight reaction. Nice video tho!
I personally loved the movie. The movie soundtrack is also absolutely amazing
THE NOSTALGIA 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
this used to be my fav movie for ages lol

Wow, I had no idea there was a novel! When the movie first came out, I wasn't a huge fan of it either, but I also ended up loving it. I think this movie deserves a bit more conversation, so thank you for making this!
I wish he just had the movie. The show made me feel pain.
Ye, it was a very bad show.
@@dagtheking5739there’s never been a good spinoff show let’s be honest
@@kobbsy7441tbh some of DreamWorks’ spinoff shows are pretty good, like Penguins and Epic Tales of Captain Underpants
I had a copy of that book when I was little

This movie was amazing in my opinion. I'm so glad you covered this! You deserve way more subscribers than you have.
Super cool video! I love learning about how ideas came to fruition, especially if it was based on an existing piece of media.
I love finding out ramdom movies were based of books it like unlocking new lore
favorite early childhood movie
Home Is My Childhood And Today Guilty Pleasure Movie! But That Thing From The Book In The Thumbnail... *Holds Up "Back Off Spray" Aggressively*
Honestly I love Home, it's one of my favorite movies. I think its mostly because of the nostalgia element as it reminds me of when I was a little kid. I really loved Rihanna and Jim in this.
You should talk about the differences between the book and movie version of how to train your dragon since they're radically different and would make for an interesting topic
You sound like you can actually voice the alien from Home
Nick Markgraf is the guy who voices my videos, and he's amazing at impressions. He's done Sonic in most of our Sonic reviews. And he did a really good Soos for our Gravity Falls review. Very talented guy.
You Should do Rumble next as it was a film loosely based on the graphic novel called Monster on the Hill and i do say loosely as the graphic novel is well super different for everything and you would be surprised the book even got a expanded Edition that had an 10 page epilogue when the film came out
like i don't know why the movie was not anything from the graphic novel at all it's kinda like the filmmakers thought the book was boring and i wonder if the creator was ever fine with this giant change they did
Another one to add to the list. Thanks for the info!
I used to watch this movie like every time on my dvd collection bc it was so sad and a good plot the movies was just cute i even have the purple alien king as a bath toy that i don't use anymore
I watch this movie every Christmas Eve as a tradition. I had no idea it was based on a book, that’s a cool fact.
I used to absolutely love this movie and the first time I watched it. I literally cried when oh seemingly got crushed and still do when I rewatch it lol❤
Oh is staring into my soul in the thumbnail, and in the book 😭
Since you’re doing DreamWorks movies and their book counterparts, I would definitely enjoy a video on How to Train Your Dragon, the stories are so wildly different that a video comparing the two would be awesome
Definitely on my list. The one I have coming up Friday is going to be a very interesting one.
@@Patbacknitro2 ooh, you know what, I’m subscribing because I want to see this and I’ll probably forget if I don’t sub
This movie changed my life and is when I got my consciousness
THIS WAS MY CHILDHOOD. I can’t believe that it was actually based on this!!
I liked oh’s original name. I wished it was kept.
It's dumb that they couldn't, because Jennifer Lopez not only starred in the film, but also approved of JLo's name originally. So why it had to be a legal mess I'll never know. Which I think the film had a fine work around with how Oh's name relates to how every other Boov saw him. In the book he took up the name JLo because he thought it was a common Earth name.
It's so weird how the book artstyle looks the same but the eyes are different
It's all the added detailing and shading.
STOP I HATED HOW NOT THREE DAYS AGO I RE WATCHED IT AND THOUGHT what would oh look like realistically and it made me shiver
the book's title with oh's eyes... i'm gonna have nightmares
I actually read the book a few years ago. I was about halfway through when I noticed the similarities to the movie, and realised that the movie was based on the book. Overall, the book was hilarious the whole way through, and I’d recommend it anyone. It’s much better than the movie, and the mystery elements keep the reader on the edge of their seat throughout the read.
didn't know they made a sequel but I actually enjoyed smekday
I literally watched the entire movie before finishing the video
I figured home didn't really get much attention for what it was, but I loved the movie when i was younger and I still think it's a great one, it's nice to see how many peoples views are actually pretty positive on it!
6:47 DREAMWORKS, MAKE A SEQUEL FOR HOME BASED OFF THE BOOK SEQUEL, I LOVED THE MOVIE
I don't care if people think this movie is bad. I've always loved it
No shame dude I too felt like the movie was missing something. If I ever find it I'll see if the book have it
2:56 WHAT THE F
4:25 god why...
5:01 make this end.
5:07 HE'S NOT A BABY
I ended up finding out it was originally a book by finding the actual book in my library I remember the cover surprised me as it said Smek Day
I loved this movie as a kid. I had an Oh plushie because I loved him so much.
0:26 I knew Over the Hedge was a comic strip before I knew it got a movie, but this is my first time hearing about Boss Baby being based on something. Probably a picture book for small children if I had to guess.
This is still my FAVOURITE animated movie.
Wait home was based off a book. I mean the first everything related to home I ever saw with the show and then I later found the movie and I thought the movie was was off the show until I found out that the movie came before the show, but now I’m figuring out that the movie is based off a book
Can we just all agree that the book home was based on, has Hideous characters that look like they don't want to live are the characters in the book.
Teacher read boss baby to the class before it was a move, I guess I'm just built different 💪
I wish dreamworks would make a Home 2 and 3
I loved this movie (and its Netflix show) as a kid! I remember crying at the part where Tip gets lost in a crowd looking for her mother. I could really feel her desperation.
aliens relocate all of mankind to australia? sounds familiar...
*gets PTSD-flashbacks from three-body-problem*
My question is why oh sent a guy who not only lives on the same planet, but like the same STREET as him, directions to his home from outside the solar system. Its just a really weird plot point i got hung up on even as a kid.
Watching this vid at 1am makes this 10x more terrifying for me 😭
This movie came out the same year as Pixar’s inside out.
I have this fear of these two films when I was 10 years old back in 2015.

I loved this movie. It was my childhood
omg i had the book! i remember thinking the art was really weird 😭😭
I LOVED THIS MOVIE AS A KID AND I WAS OBSESSED AND I LOOK LIKE TIPP AND MY MOM LOOKS LIKE TIPP'S MOM AND WE HAVE A CAT THAT LOOKS LIKE PIG!!!!!
Oh is just nightmare fuel in the 2007 book
Did you know home had a Netflix series called home adventures with Tip and Oh
That movie is 9 years old now…
arent alot of movies just based on books, kinda a thing people forget about. Did not expect the book to be 500 pages long tho
as for my opinion on this movie its a mixed back for me like i feel it couldve been better
If I had a nickel for every time a movie based of a book released after the book’s sequel I’d have 2 nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s still weird it happed twice.
This movie was like birthing out bangers
As someone who liked the moi, I'll check the book out sometime!
I meant "movie"...
i have no words.
The book art reminds me of All Tomorrows
The aliens in the book looks so scary lol
Wow this was suprising. also bam u got a new sub

3:02 bro, that alien looks hot.
That's the Gorg. In the book it's a Reptile human hybrid rather than a little starfish fella
@@Patbacknitro2He literally looks so hot (to me), just for a character of a children books.
I LOVE THE MOVIE! So i watched the dreamworks show that has 4 seasons, they are like 52 episodes in total. You should watch the show and review it !!
I definitely have it on my list to review a lot of the DreamWorks shows.
Tbh in my opinion, the movie is not bad, but skips and changes a lot of things from the book, the movie is my fav, but I prefer the book
I prefer the 2D series
If you prefer the book then wouldn’t the book be ur fav?
In the 2007 one OH looks so traumatized😂
Know I actually did heard about the book after I watched the movie but I never really checked it out.
I read both books, and there's something very ironic of the names J Lo and Rihanna being used. Yet, I can't find anywhere if this was intentional when casting. Or if they even noticed.
It's weird. Because you wouldn't think they'd actually care about who voices the characters, most studios just want big celebrity names to slap onto it. But Home actually had probably the best casting choices it could've gotten. And idk if they just got lucky casting celebrities, or if they did put some thought into it. Jenifer Lopez though was a fan of the book before getting cast in the movie though. Which is why agreed to the role she played.
@@Patbacknitro2 that's really cool to hear. I wonder if Rihanna ever learned of the use of her name in the 2nd book of a boov being called that. I won't spoil the reason.
Also, I like when they made the Home series, they incorporated other elements that were unused in the movie, such as the seven Boov genders.
You should do the bad guys
Definitely on my list lol. As you can see by the past 2 Book to Movie videos I made, it's been mostly DreamWorks projects so far. The next one I have a script ready for is a Disney one.
The thumbnail scares the shit outta me💀
I love when I find out these movies I thought were atleast original are based on a book, makes me dislike stuff such as boss baby even more knowing they had to try even less
I love space song
I Love Oh And Tip❤
I watched this movie 26 times as a kid I had no idea it came from a book
Didnt learned about this movie being based on a book :]
Also there is a netflix show about this movie
The book version looks like the up-close scenes in Spongebob
There was a book?
The book image from the thumbnail looks like it’s from all tomorrows imo
this is an odd question but the intro music is it a remix of space song by beach house?
Yep. Both the intro and outro themes are part of a remix by Astrophysics and Minttt.
