    Wow! I only make 2000 a month and I’m saving about 800 a month. My bills are 900 dollars all together. So far I have 3000 saved. My plan is to save 10,000 by the end of the year. My income is not much but I’m trying. That’s awesome you make good money. My plan is to try to save 50,000 dollars in 5 years but you did it in 1 year. Wow. Crazy.

Yes go for it I honestly got so much out of doing it and I am continuing for this year because of that. It really is a good experiment just to understand and watch your own shopping habits. What a successful no buy/low buy year! I recently found your channel and I’ve been trawling through your videos for inspiration/tips to help me get my financial act together. I moved to Aus from Nz in the middle of last year and I am also working as an independent support worker for people with disabilities. I don’t expect I’ll be earning as much as you have been, but am still making the most I’ve ever done at any other job I’ve had while also doing rewarding work. I am also fortunate to be able to live with family and pay a lower rent as I try to knock off the debts that grew when I was travelling in the few years pre-COVID. So far I’ve paid off all my smaller debts and now am focused on the beast that is my student loan. I’m hoping some of your discipline will transfer through osmosis as I keep watching your videos! I’m pretty hopeful that I’ll reach financial freedom before I know it! Thanks again for the awesome content :)

    • @NeliaRose

      That is a great idea especially after simplifying your life it can be easy for new things to find their way into your home if you are not paying attention. Also now you will be in a great mindset for a challenge like this because of all your hard work from 2021. Even if your family isn't up for it just by you doing the best you can will often encourage them to join as well because they will slowly notice the differences in you. I wish you the best for 2022 :)

    Reminded while watching how little privilege me and my husband have compared to you (not a dig at you!)...our rent (we come from very poor families) is 1400 euros a month for a very basic place in a very small rural town. I wish I could afford a no buy but as it is my whole life has been a no buy as we simply don't have any money after bills etc are paid and our jobs are way worse paid than yours! Enjoy the luck you've been blessed with. Well done on the no buy!

      Great to hear that this videos can be inspiring in someway. Yes it is hard to focus on money and not spending when there are bigger issues that are going on. Sometimes you just have to do what you can to get through. Every small little effort helps and just because a no buy or low buy would be overwhelming even little things like waiting a couple days before you buy something instead of instantly getting it. Working on small goals can be the momentum you need to work towards what you want to achieve. Thank you for the comment and I hope you are having a great day :)

    When you move to America would you find the no-buy more difficult? I visited America for the first time last January and their consumerism is so different to Australia

    • @NeliaRose
      @NeliaRose  3 года назад +5

      That is a really good question. I think yes the temptation for me is in someways stronger over there especially with certain stores being so much cheaper to get good things. Also I always find it is super location related and cities being extra tricky. When I lived in London a bought a lot of things because stores are everywhere and you are constantly tempted however when I am home here in Australia I have to drive 40+ minutes to get to a shopping mall. I think also the Aussie lifestyle is very much about going to the beach getting out and about so this means that your time is directed in a different way. When I move back to the States I will be in the countryside and I will only get one day off a week plus will be living on a very small income so this will naturally stop the tendency to spend. I think shopping is a temptation no matter where you are and especially these days with online orders with a click of a button. Thank you for the question it has actually got me thinking a lot and I might make a video talking more about this. I hope for now that answer is somewhat helpful :) Hope you are having a lovely day :)

      Glad you found it helpful or interesting in someway. A No Buy or Low Buy is the a good way to do that indeed. It helps put things into perspective and if you do the hard work now to save you are ultimately saving even more because the more money you have up front for the house the less you pay in interest. Also saving for a house is an awesome motivation to stick to your rules even when it gets hard. :) Hope you are having a great day :)

      I feel you so much. I'm in a similar situation even with one of the lowest rents that is available in my context (city and country), I'm not making middle class money lmao. I think the biggest win for me is seeing this as I'm saving myself some huge debt by doing low-buy and that is an incredible saving. Especially when a lot of people live above their means to fit the middle class ideal and end up paying for it with interest the rest of their lives.

    I'm coming into this very late, but I am confused. Most of us have mortgages, car loans, and groceries to pay for and I'm not seeing this in the calculations. While I love that saving over 24K that year was amazing, the remaining money, if it were in my life, would have gone to my cell phone, housing and utilities, and vehicle costs. I definitely would not have 'saved' much more than the 24K which is still amazing and I'm also still planning on doing a low buy 2024. Just curious about the other items and expenses.
