Arguably the best submachine gun of WW2 was the Owen, particularly suited to very harsh jungle conditions. It had a separate compartment inside the receiver, which isolated the small-diameter bolt from its retracting handle using a bulkhead. It could be deeply and completely immersed in mud, withdrawn and still function. As far as I know it's the only automatic weapon that had that ability. It also saw use in Vietnam.
Well during the Cold War the best submachine gun ever used was the H&K MP5 it was one of the greatest submachine guns ever and is still used today
I was about to ask where the Owen gun was.
@@michaelcoulter1725
The father of the Owen gun was teenaged when he designed it. 🇦🇺 ✌️
Oh I was think that must be PPS - 43
Owen gun is quite similar to British sten gun , than Russians used ppsh in bulk and Germans used STG 44
In the Army, my primary weapon was the M1 Garand. I was also trained on the M1911. 45 ACP pistol. Also the BAR, Ma Deuce, 3.5 inch rocket launcher (bazooka). Saved the M3 grease gun for last. Nobody mentioned that with the M3, it feels like two recoil impulses every time it fires. The first one when it fires. The second one when the breechblock hits the snubber at the end of its travel.
The .45 ACP cartridge is already subsonic (less than 1100 feet per second) in its standard form. In operations requiring suppressed fire, it is far more effective than anything with subsonic forms of .355 Parabellum.
Please note that I am American in CHARACTER as well as nationality and am actively purging Metricrap from my use of the English language. Metricrap is a foriegn language being crammed down our throats by anti-Americans bent on turning us into all the places our ancestors fled from. We are a world LEADER and need to ACT like it instead of kissing up to these (people of illegitimate birth).
Father of all Submachine guns is actually the Mp-18, but I digress. The Chicago Typewriter is iconic for being the most recognizable and recognized best early(ist) Smg.
Mp-18s where even used by China.
Mp-18s where used by China too.
For sure the Tommy is far more recognizable and iconic, but any serious historian wouldn't make the claim that it's the "father of submachineguns".
The German mp 18 was the first submachine gun
Yup.
It is, though the term sub machine gun was used by Thompson
@@apersonyoudontknow5492This is correct, the Germans used the term "machine pistol" (machinpistole). But for all intents and purposes, the weapons were meant to fullfill the same role. The MP18 was the first SMG to see active battlefield service.
Y'all not watch or listen to what they say after the 4 minute mark haven't ya?
America can't accept that
“You don’t get anything cheaper or simpler than this sub machine gun, the M3 Grease Gun”, I think the British Sten gun might take issue with that comment.
yes it will, the sten is cheaper and simpler, but then again so would the russian pps43, its even simpler and cheaper.
This guy says right at the beginning of the video that "SMGs are the preferred weapons of terrorists". We never see a terrorist carrying an AK. Absolutely never.
So, this guy, as well as this entire series is full of BS. Watch it for entertainment. Do not watch it for its veracity.
Your 100% right! Sten is easily the simplest.
Sten-wool's worth gun
@@sid__vicious Yes, it became known as the ‘Woolworths’ gun because you couldn’t get it any cheaper.
Didn't mention the Sterling/Sten from the UK. I think there was also one (Reisen) used by Marine Raiders and the SSF.
“And This…is Triggers!”
😆😆😆
LOVED this show.
My wife did as well.
Super cool stuff.
❤😎👍❤
They copied it from the old military channel. This is copyright infringement.
LMAOOO at 36:37 you can see they were just shooting the dummy with the gun not the suitcase
Lmao you're right
I was just about to leave a comment about that and wanted to see how many other people noticed it and already said something about it 😂
I love how understated the SAS guy was, totally matter of fact and not interested in shooting pickleball jars or green grocers stalls.
I've fired the Thompson, MP40, Uzi, and MP5. My favorite is the MP5!
Me too. It's why I own one
I like the FN P90
yes, MP5 is great weapon
Most of them are famous Submachine Guns
Australia’s Owen Gun was the ultimate in submachine guns due to its simplicity and reliability.
Love the way you gave the other guy a bottle twice the size. Lol
"The SMG is the preferred weapon of terrorists"
Is this guy eating the wrong type of mushrooms? Picture a terrorist in your mind. Any terrorist! What weapon will he be carrying?
Yes, you're right! Of course he will be carrying an AK rifle!
Hopefully one day one of these history channels that upload older documentaries will upload tales of the gun.
I'd love that myself.
Any idiot could hit those bottles that close...its like being at the fairground as a kid...someone just have give them a teddy bear ar the end😅
Well Thompson was hands down the best even by today's standard .45 acp in a close range cqb is absolute devastating
So long as it didn’t jam, it was notoriously unreliable due to its complexity.
It has it's flaws but reliability isn't one
@@8MADJACK the m1928 and the a1 models had the jamming issues.. they cleared that in the m1a1s later
You forgot the British Sten and the German MP 18 do better next time .
Please also include Russian PPSH and German STG 44 of that time
@@badiuzzamansatti6391 STG 44 is NOT a sub machine gun !
And the Sterling AKA E-11 Blaster of Star Wars franchise
@@RJM1011 MP-44
MP stands for "maschinenpistole" (machine pistol), funny enough in the East German army they also called AKs "MPiK" (Maschinenpistole Kalashnikov)
@@OperatorMax1993 Still does not mean it's a sub machine gun !
THE Father of the submachine gun is the Mp 18 from WWI.
What happened at 36.35 min the brief case break open and eject the brass? Or was Will needing help by a MP-5 A3? M3A1 Greese Gun vs M3 Greese Gun?
I noticed that aswell I think they put in a different clip on purpose or by accident I'm not sure
It's been years since I've watched this video when it was first aired on the History Channel.
and no 1' ever mentions the WW-1' imperial german army very underrated = Mp-18' submaching gyn which was small light and combat effective
Sorry to burst your bubble, but the Germans actually got there first with the MP 18. Still love my Thompson though🥰
OhOh :) 36:36 Briefcase MP5 . . . and in the lower left Corner...😉
But very interesting Documentary at all
What I heard about the tommygun during ww2 is the more experienced guys would trade it to a new person for their Garand. I don't know how true that is as it's something I heard second hand so take that for what you will. I have also heard they were really particular to reload.
and no mention of the M1 carbine which later in the war could be fired full auto.
What an iconic and thrilling show! Thanks to this channel for running Triggers
"The father of all submachine guns is the Thompson".
Really?
Not the MP-18, or even the Villa Perosa.
Sure the Thompson was an early SMG, but not the father of all submachine guns.
That's kind of like saying the Ford Mustang is the father of all cars.
Nice introduction video about submachines..
The 300 blackout with a silencer might be the future.
Well that’s not really true the Germans created the stemgever 44 it was a 1st generation AR15 style platform. The USA modeled the M16 after it.
Do you even watch the video before you open your mouth? Plus they're talking about Sub Machine guns not assault rifles
STEN??
very good watch
Really guys......lets totally ignore the British who on balance, produced the cheapest, most numerous sub ever mad........the Sten! The Sten caused more havoc in German occupied territory in the hands of the resistance than any other weapon. A piece of utter genius on the part of its creator🥸🥸
Yes, the MP-5, wish i had one as a civilian, used on back in 2003!
@ war stories your awesome thanks again
Bar is not a submachine gun like what? 30 06
I'm glad I'm not the only one to notice that.
Keep these coming
I’ve fired the 1928 A1 and M3. Both were awesome!
Un the Philippines we used to call it the criss cross gun
Nothing out performs a Shotgun at close range. Each pull of the trigger sends 9-9mm rds down range. You can send 81 rds down range inside 3 seconds..
Ithaca and Winchester made great shotguns for the military
My father was Army, Vietnam happened while he was serving. They issued him a Tommy, he hated it but, it saved his life a few times while he was there.
The first US government entity to purchase the Thompson was the US Postal Service...
gave me a bit of anxiety that dude with the camera wore the same clothes as the targets when they cleared the house with the micro uzi😬😆
“The father of all submachine guns is the Thompson”
wtf no it’s not try the mp18
Absolutely love the Greaser!
You forgot your leather gloves that german soldiers wore when using the Schmiesser.
The German MP 18 aka Machine Pistol 1918 was the first.
You need to remember it wasn’t American therefor it can be safely ignored.
Where is the swedish K?
nice
How is it possible to talk about the "evolution" of the submachine gun and leave out the iconic Russian PPsh and PPS-43, weapons which were instrumental in the Russian defeat of the Nazis during WWII, remember?

37:15 In Singapore 🇸🇬, a company known as Singapore Technologies (Engineering) which help to develop and design local military platforms and firearms for Singapore military is currently developing their own version of the PDW, CPW (Compact Personal Weapon). It is say it is able to fire rounds range from 9mm, 45ACP, 4.6mm and the 5.7mm.
1:27 "The Father of the sub machine gun is the Thompson."
Absolutely incorrect. The first mass produced submachine gun was the Bergmann MP 1,8.
I turned off the video right afterwards.
Same here
Same here
Lanchester, Sten, Sterling ? Superficial, out of order,
You turned it off too soon, they talked about the MP18 and the villa perosa, but the Thompson was the first one actually named submachine gun even if not the first submachine gun by type.
Every video of this series is filled with biased or otherwise incorrect BS.
I couldn't watch much of it in one go either.
the BAR is so beautiful.
I thought it was just called the Medal of Honor.🎖
"The father of all sub-machineguns is the Thompson."
I imagine the MP18 Bergmann might take issue with that statement.
EDIT: They do actually mention the MP18! My bad for not watching the entire video before commenting -.-
Wil the host easily has the best sideburns on RUclips
And the Sten !!!
Thought that was tim Kennedy for a second lol
Thank f**k it was NOT !
We're having a conversation about submachine guns, but we're not going to mention the STEN??? Come on, now.
My best friend was a Palestinian radio dj in Miami in 1980 he was killed at a disco in our old Neighborhood. By a tvstar with an uzi . This episode hit home
38:14 try about 1150 fps for the 9mm, unless you are stating sub-sonic rounds.
For the grease gun being the cheapest gun it’s very expensive to purchase these days. I think last time I saw one in person for sale it was 3000$(which was 14 years ago)
Also taping another magazine to a gun makes much more sense if they pointed opposite each other so you don’t fiddle around looking for the top of the other magazine.
27:15 AMAZING! ❤
whats your thoughts on the british sten ?
When my engineer battalion was visiting Ft. Bliss in 1985 I saw an M60 tanker with a grease gun . He commented it was not very accurate
I used one for many years as an M60 tank crewman. They are just as accurate as any other submachine gun, and quite easy to control. No submachine gun is really going to do much more than hit a human size target at around 50 yds.
Tank crews were still carrying the M3 during the Gulf War in 1991.
It was in service from 1942-1992. The official replacement was the M4 which didn't come around until 1994 so tankers had to use M16s. National Guard in some cases had them as late as 2008. Even some regular army had them after 2000.
@@DefunctYompelvert I was actually very surprised when I saw tank crews carrying them at Dhahran back in ‘90/‘91, never realised they still had them in service.
@@DefunctYompelvert wow! I did not realize they were in service so long!
I love the greaser
Would’ve loved to see the type 100. Mp40 my favorite hands down of ww2. Mp7 is my 1 B
Yknow not bad at all. somehow I kept hearing John Walsh's voice.
Sten woulda been nice too. Or the type 100. Glad to see mp40. Deadliest one has to be the MP7 though. She’s beautiful
How did the Japanese miss on making SMGs on large scale for their troops during WW2
He didn't mention the mini-Uzi, in between the full-size & Micro Uzi.
One thing they should've gone over is why drum magazines are not practical. Heavy, bulky, not very reliable, time-consuming to load, and they rattle when on the move. Hence why militaries don't use them.
The suppressor does not in fact slow down the bullet! Is he sure he's army ranger? A suppressor suppresses the sound or gas. The ammunition has to be subsonic in order for it not to break the sound barrier.
Bro, you got .45 acp and taking down aluminum can and gave the guy who had 9mm 750ml glass bottles. How is that fair in the slightest?
M3 is based on the Sten design. Only the magazine position is the same as the mp38/40
The Thompson was not what started it all. German infantry were using the MP18 at the end of WW1. (The guest acknowledge this much)
39:19 MP7 shooting the door.... That's not a 100 yrds. More like 30-50 yrds
Love the grease gun and micro uzi though.
SAS showed how to properly use the MP5
26:32 Why is the guy on the right so determined to stare into the eyes of the other guy?
The 30 caliber BAR was a brute it could go through walls so yeah BAR!
36:37 You can see an ordinary gun, out of the briefcase, firing in the very bottom left of screen as well as ejected cases. Oops ...
Lol your right. I did not see or notice that. Good eye
My uncle was a gunner on a tank destroyer, used a grease gun and swore by it.
The nice sub machingun thommson
How come the MAC 10 didn't make it on this list?
They are showing the best, sorry if it hurts your feelings
Thompson is heavy and doesn't have long range, but it is reliable and rugged
Over engineered over weight over priced
33:03 This is dumb. The MP5SD doesn't change the velocity of the projectile. Certainly not to this extent without loading different cartridges.
🤣the swagger walk and bleach white teeth of a true hero.
I was waiting for the Skorpion but it was a no show.
.45 acp with 9" drop at 200 yards... must be some that .45+p+ super powder 😂
Beretta 38 Mochetto.
Hey it's Whiskey Whiskey!
0:25 compact, concealable firearms...
Wait, what? The subgun the host is firing is about as concealable as a full size battle rifle, esp with the drum mag.
Are we trying to make banning them easier or something?
You also need to say that the Tompson fires from an open bolt.
A Mac 10 but slower down the rpm
No mention of the Sten.
I'd use Tommy Gun over the MP-40. More powerful and higher rate of fire. Tommy Gun is an effective and fearsome weapon.
Same, My friend August carried one in the 7th Army 1944-1945 as Sgt
@@CrossOfBayonne Wow. Nice.
Was the Thomson the first sub mg .... cue endless waffle to avoid saying no.
🇺🇸
Mp 5 top tier h&k owns it!
Well, look who got some zoom whitening after forged in fire
