yes exactly! 'Flattering' to me can mean just that. As best as you can, which many women think means still not beautiful. Kinda like when someone says something looks 'nice' on you. Like I don't want to look 'nice', I don't want a flattering dress, I want a beautiful dress that makes me look like the most beautiful woman in the world!
NO. That dress flatters your figure, means it makes you look good. Flattering is not a bad word. Or someone can ask, Does this dress flatter my figure?
For you coming for the owner for correcting the mother, listen here, when big girls try on clothes and someone says "that's flattering" that is an underhanded dig. Whether it be malicious (which the mother wasn't being) or NOT, it is a dig at people not a size 2. "Oh the dress is really flattering" means "Oh the dress is hiding your rolls and gut". The word Flattering is bad news in this scenario!
Shanelle, you dontonly sells dress, but you also builds confidence in people, you are very compassionate towards people, I dont know you but I love you for that.
I feel like she was trying way too hard to be all 'extra' and 'my way or the highway' in this episode...it was really cringy...lady your opinion doesn't matter at all you're trying to give the bride what she wants keep your opinion to yourself.
The woman was doing her job - Of course, she has opinions that's what people pay her for - I think this bride was looking for attention and being outrageous seemed to do it for her - How can a bridal consultant truthfully work with such a flake - - Look at me, look at me, look at me I will get married but mess with other guys - Polyamorous??? give me a break - Sorry, my opinion
@@carolirvine3095 The bride wasn't there for opinions on her lifestyle. She was there for a dress. The woman was incredibly unprofessional by voicing her opinions that way.
@Glittery Glitz, The word "flattering" often has a deeper meaning: nice, okay, doesn't make you ugly, passable, or "since I don't have anything else to say...". If someone or something is beautiful, you don't use the word "flattering" without qualifications. Example: "You look gorgeous in that dress, and it is particularly flattering to your hair /skin color" Of course the mom understands this use. She wasn't impressed by the dress, that's why she used the word. But the bride to be didn't come there to look flattering, she came to leave gorgeous!
Princess Pumpkin Well when you flatter somebody it is not really the truth but you are saying something to make that person feel good.Like somebody gives you compliments and you wonder does she mean it or is she just flattering me.So I agree with the owner that flattering can be an inappropriate word there.
@@bubujooestes1499 Noted, but that is not the proper use of the word in this case. In reference to clothing, it means that it brings the best out in you visually.
I’m wondering if taking offense at the word “flattering” is because people (i.e., those who seem to be offended by EVERYTHING these days) have decided it means “you look like crap but that hides some of your ugliness; it makes you look not quite as hideous,” etc... instead of “enhancing attractiveness” (Merriam-Webster)-in other words, drawing attention to your already lovely features.
My asian mom who was always and still is a size 0 never seen a ounce of fat on her body in her life used to always buy me ugly frumpy oversized hand me downs and say it looks very flattering meanwhile i was 10yrs old with boobs and rolls im black and she always tried hiding me and i was always wearing clothes for old women i hated it the word flattering is a nightmare for me😭😭😭
This shop is dealing with women who have been turned away from almost every other bridal shop during to their size. The word, "flattering" is a code word for plus sized women to mean, "Well, you don't look ugly in it so you might as well settle for it". When the mother uttered that word, it comes from that background of use and the shop owner and everyone in there knew it (look at their expressions). The dress she wound up with evoked strong emotions and words from the bride and everyone else present, and the word, "flattering" wasn't used at all. BIG difference.
@@YT4Me57 Ok, that makes sense, especially the fact that no one used the word when she tried on the dress she chose. I hadn't thought about it like that.
@@YT4Me57 Yep, This is what happens when you don't fit conventional sizes. This item of clothing will fit you but you look like a sack of potatoes in it but we won’t actually say that, so we will say that it is flattering instead. “Oh yes that top is lovely it flatters your eyes” while it is showing every fat roll I have….
I'm so glad she said what I've been thinking watching SYTTD, Curvy Brides, and this: the word "flattering" is HORRIBLE! It basically means, "this makes you look less fat than you already are!" or, "with that dress on, I almost forgot how fat you were!". They never say that to the skinnier girls, only the plus-sized ones. I'm not even plus-sized and every time I hear that word it makes me cringe.
When I went to my fitting I was told certain styles are more flattering and I'm quite small. Flattering simply means it shows off what you want to show off and downplay what you don't.
I don´t agree. My mother is size 2 and there are some clothes and colors that are flattering on her (tube dresses) but other styles are horrible on her (mermaid) because she doesn´t have curves. I´m a size 16 and there are some styles that I wear all the time because they are flattering on me (aka they show my curves).
@@dee191403 I don't mind that one, because I've never heard it said to an ugly person. Lol. But for some reason, whenever someone says, "Oh, that dress is so flattering on you!!!" to someone, it's always been a fat person they've said it to (literally in my entire life). I've never been told that something looked "flattering" on me until I gained about 30 pounds several years ago, which I quickly lost. As soon as I was fat, "flattering" was suddenly a word people used to describe me. Never before nor since has anyone told me that x looked flattering on me. There's a possibility that there are some regions where the meaning differs. I have a sister who is plus-sized, and she always looks "flattering" or "slimming" wherever we go, whereas everyone else looks "beautiful", "gorgeous", or they comment on how the color is perfect on them, the pattern is great, where'd you get it, etc. I'm really protective of her because I've seen and heard this, and far more reprehensible shit, for YEARS, so whenever someone says, "oH mA GaH, sOoO FlaTteRiNg!", my sister and I just roll our eyes and depending on my mood or if I know the person is a piece of shit in general, I'll make a comment about how their makeup makes them look like a completely different person, like, pretty!, or something.
Well, she wasn't lying when she said, "'Flattering'???!...I don't even know what that word means anymore! " She truly has no idea what it means. She said no one in her shop is allowed to say "flattering," and instead they should say that the gown is beautiful or that *she* is more beautiful in the gown. If the woman is beautiful, and she puts on the gown, and the gown makes her look MORE beautiful, that is literally the DEFINITION of the word "flattering."
Such a sad story but I think it’s so great that her mom was there for the first trip so that’s something she can cherish forever. The veil Is beautiful!!!
Yeah I wonder what she meant by it, and why. I mean if it was meant to be that way because of the venue, or a specific item ( a brooch or something...) But it didn't seem like there was anything mentioned
Karina Jakobsen Tbf I don’t think it really matters because no modern day wedding dress is going to look like something the celts wore.as long as she is comfortable in it and feels happy that’s all that matters. she can make it feel more celtic with the accessories and wedding decorations since it’s difficult to show the vibe with a bright white wedding dress
The store probably didn’t have anything authentically Celtic. At least she pointed out that one dress had a clover ; ) Originally Celtic people would have had a hand fasting and almost certainly would not have been wearing white at any rate.
I’ve been reading comments and I’m really surprised that people are negatively addressing the “flattering” statement. Please remember she is dressing curvy plus sized women. All women want to look beautiful on their wedding day, not just flattering. What builds a woman’s self esteem more? Hearing, “That dress flatters you” or “You look beautiful in that dress.” We have to remember that brides want to look beautiful no matter their size. Looking in bridal magazines you see gorgeous models usually size 2 or 4. At times, when you’re larger, a boost of self esteem is much appreciated.
Flattering is the word my size 0 asian mom would use to describe the frumpy clothes she would buy to hide her size 15 10yr old adopted black daughters boobs and rolls and she would tell me everytime "it covers your fat its very flattering".....flattering isnt the best word and i feel that on another level🤷🏾🤷🏾🤷🏾
Loved this episode! Shanelle was truly trying to keep the surprise off her face! Loved Emily's gown look 1 and 2 I loved how she embraced Marilyn and all of the curvy brides to make sure they know that they are ❤️ beautiful
Doors can damage dresses more. Imagine getting a dress with a full skirt caught on a doorknob or hinge. Doors get dirty too, dust and handprints near the knobs. All if that causes wear and tear on the sample dresses. Curtains can be pulled down and washed, and never snag a lace dress. :)
This must be a tiny building. The show room is claustrophobic. The bride is barely a foot away from the people in the chairs. She needs a little more distance to give a really big "Twirl" impact.
Man she didn't hold back even a little bit on her opinions of the first couple. Honestly if I was looking for a dress and saw this episode I wouldn't want to go to her shop. If you have a job like hers you can't be making fun of your clients... at least on camera.
What a beautiful and loving woman , so uplifting to these women who need that special touch from heaven ! I deeply admire her personality ! Great job .
I love this series! The owner is so compassionate and all of the brides show such courage and are inspiring to others. I like how Haute & Co. encourages and shows such love to all. Next time I visit Chicago I plan on stopping by her business.
Sitting here sobbing after seeing the second bride. My mom is still alive and I love her so much,I cant ever imagine losing her, especially so suddenly.
Why is everyone so angry at the couple for being poly, if they're ok with it, agreed to it and are happy like that then what does it matter to you, go take care of your own lives
I think she doesn’t like the word flattering because when I’ve heard my mom say that to me before I immediately think, “Oh, it’s slimming me” or “hides my stomach.” It automatically takes me back to feeling self conscious about myself even if it was meant to be a compliment.
The owner was being so judgmental towards this bride. I mean yes I understand it's new for her a polymer relationship, no shoes and fiance coming in. Yes there won't be a wow factor when groom sees bride but if she wants opinion of his let it be. Also no shoes gosh that's fantastic as heels are painful. The bride said it's not a traditional wedding so what do you expect?! Also that purple hair was horrible tho. I love purple hair just not this😅
I think a groom shouldn't be involved in dress shopping as it takes away the wow factor, but in this case there was a bit of a compromise, as he saw the dress, but not her in it, and they are very different, so he can still be surprised
@@lisaparrey1343 yes I also think groom should not be involved as no wow factor left but that's our opinion not the brides. I mean people have different opinions so the consultant should have an open mind to it as she is selling dresses. But the happy medium like you said was good. She showed the dress but not on herself so still can surprise him. Another way to show a dress and still have surprise element is have an ugly look during consulting and glow up on wedding day. They be like this was the dress on you. Who are you and how you became so beautiful. Lol jk🤣
@@elouise5593 I suggest you do some research on what polyamory means, then. Many couples have a "primary" relationship partner. It's not just about going around and being with whomever you please. There are discussions, boundaries, and love involved. Open marriage and polyamory are not the same. Just because it makes no sense to you, that doesn't mean it isn't right for others.
@@elouise5593 Us poly people get married for the same reasons as anyone else - love. :) Some poly people choose to not legally marry one partner as to keep things more egalitarian between their relationships. But some have a primary partner and choose to legally marry them while still having deep, meaningful relationships with others (the relationships are as equal as they can be while still being legally married to one person). And some even choose to marry one person while still considering all their relationships equal, but recognizing the legal benefits of marriage. There are all kinds of setups. :) I hope this helps.

Flattering means it makes your body look better miss store owner. We all have things we like to hide on our bodies and thats ok! And we all know shes borderline overweight so flattering is not a bad word. Whats not flattering is writing "welcome Emily" in a chalk board. Ghetto!!
Steve L Flattering doesn't just mean it hides the parts we don't like...it also means it highlights the parts we DO like. In other words, a flattering gown is one that looks great on that person and makes her look great! and the shop lady thinks that's a bad thing? ?
Incorrect. Polyamory takes a very stable and loving relationship. You're not "cheating" on your partner. Relationships are discussed, boundaries are established, and communication is a must. One doesn't " go off and cheat." Instead, there is a discussion. Also, I do hate to be the one to burst your monogamous bubble, but polyamory has been around longer than monogamy. Please do your research before spreading lies. Thank you!
I loved the dress Marilynn had on and her mother’s vail was so beautiful it made it extra special.. I think she is the most beautiful bride I have seen on here yet ... all of them are beautiful but she justed looked stunning.. I know this was a year ago so I hope her and her new husband the best of everything in life 😁
Same reason most monogamous couples. Because you want to stay with your partner forever and declare your love and so if your loved one gets sick you can be there for them.
@jc ashe - What many monogamous people don't understand is that many polyamorous people are often in a primary relationship with one other (a diad), and have emotion and/or sexual relationships with others, either together/shared (triad, "throuple," quad, etc.) or separately with individuals (metamour). Honest communication, negotiation (ongoing, as things may change), trust and respect are paramount to the success of poly relationships. It's not for everyone, and for those whom it works, it's often because of a sense of "compersion," which is an empathetic feeling of happiness and joy associated with seeing a loved one love another; as opposed to jealousy. Of course, polyamorous people can wed one another, because, like monogamous couples, they love each other and want to make that kind of traditional, "official" commitment, for whatever reasons, many of which are the same as monogamous couples. They may have children, they may want things to be legal (for workplace health benefits), they may want to marry for the same reasons monogamous people do, and that's not just for taxes purposes. Try to open your mind to other options or models of relationships, and accept that someone can love more than one person, just like parents have room in their hearts for and can love all of their children. Just because the majority of people are (allegedly) monogamous, doesn't mean that it's the only option or the right option, especially considering the high number of married people who cheat on and betray their spouses, and can lead divorce, still the fate of about 50% of marriages.
@Lindsay Pruett - you're probably wrong in that assumption. There are many reasons why people want to get married, and that can happen in polyamorous relationships, especially where there is a primary couple and there may be other partners/lovers with whom they do not have the same kind of commitment or relationship. Other partners may be married to other people. There may be instances where there are combined families who co-parent and either live apart or together.
I have to say I don't get flattering being a trigger word, if something is flattering it shows the bride's natural shape and enhances her beauty. I also felt like her reaction to the groom was a bit OTT like grooms are often more involved today and actually I would have thought she was rude.
I'm confused, maybe it's because I've never been a bride, but wouldn't you want your fiance to be a part of the wedding planning? I see some people saying partner in planning = controlling, but I would want my boo to be a part of it. Making all the decisions alone sounds so exhausting and stressful. Although, the groom can wait outside while I figure out my dress.
Choosing a wedding dress and actually marrying someone in full knowledge of the fact that they aren't and never will be enough both physically and emotionally... Interesting and a bit sad...
I use flattering all the time and my mom says it to me all the time with clothes. I take it as a complement when she says something looks flattering on me. I dont think she knows what the word means or she is taking it the completely wrong way!
As a heavy lady, people sometimes use "flattering" when what they really mean is "oh it hides all your lumps so well" and she's probably heard it often enough, with nasty enough tones, to form negative associations.
She usually does a little better with the brides and their uniqueness. Her empathy and support came back with the last bride. It looked like the first family had thick skin so hopefully, it was fine.

"Flattering" does seem to imply there is something wrong with your body that the dress successfully hides.
Exactly !
When she put on her mother’s veil... ❤️😭
Woman: ThAts Not A pOsiTive wOrd
Also woman: we can get a dress that brings you in more
Thank you!!!
That rude to have go at the mum like that because she said it was flattering what bad about that
@Glittery Glitz, The word "flattering" often has a deeper meaning: nice, okay, doesn't make you ugly, passable, or "since I don't have anything else to say...".
I don't think this woman knows what the word 'flattering' means...
She doesn’t know Celtic either.
Princess Pumpkin Well when you flatter somebody it is not really the truth but you are saying something to make that person feel good.Like somebody gives you compliments and you wonder does she mean it or
is she just flattering me.So I agree with the owner that flattering can be an inappropriate word there.
@@bubujooestes1499 Noted, but that is not the proper use of the word in this case. In reference to clothing, it means that it brings the best out in you visually.
She did say she had no idea what it meant so..😂😂
Yes, but would you say “that look is flattering on you” to a slim person. Nope, you’d say “you look beautiful “
Lovely. Well put.
I even got goosebumps and teared up. Beautiful Bride! Beautiful family! Absolutely loved the veil too!
Flattering simply means it shows off what you want to show off and downplay what you don't.
veggiesaremurder Thanks for standing in solidarity with us curvy girls : )
I don´t agree. My mother is size 2 and there are some clothes and colors that are flattering on her (tube dresses) but other styles are horrible on her (mermaid) because she doesn´t have curves. I´m a size 16 and there are some styles that I wear all the time because they are flattering on me (aka they show my curves).
So u must not like the wors photogenic either? Coz it might mean "you're prettier in photos than u are in reality"
She truly has no idea what it means.
Greendragon434 No, that’s not really the definition of flattering. Beside that, why not just say she looks beautiful?
Such a sad story but I think it’s so great that her mom was there for the first trip so that’s something she can cherish forever. The veil Is beautiful!!!
Apart from the green ribbon none of the dresses fit a Celtic theme. The four leaf clover would be lovely on a different style.
Yeah I wonder what she meant by it, and why. I mean if it was meant to be that way because of the venue, or a specific item ( a brooch or something...)
But it didn't seem like there was anything mentioned
Omg that last dress on Emily took my breath away... I wish I had known about this shop when I was getting married...
If she doesn't know what celtic means, she could google it, instead of just pulling random dresses....
I looked it up and it was very different than the dress the girl decided to go with it.
Well, she still picked out a beautiful dress it all worked out in the end.
It is also not pronounced "celtic" but "keltic".
The store probably didn’t have anything authentically Celtic. At least she pointed out that one dress had a clover ; ) Originally Celtic people would have had a hand fasting and almost certainly would not have been wearing white at any rate.
If that lady spoke to my mama like that when buying my dress I’d never buy from that store
Hailey M. Ramey Yes, I would walk out and tell her I am going to go and buy a flattering gown at a shop where they respect my mother!
Lol true
You’re sensitive af she clearly had good intentions.
Duty James You wouldn’t dare slap her idiot and you’re a man take it up with her husband if you want to be physical you psychomaniac.
@@ShennellOfficial If i was her MOTHER you stupid bloody moron. I strongly think that your mother needs a slap for raising such a dam FOOL
Flattering is a great word! I always say that! I’m a size 22/24 and 5’10 and I know how to dress for my figure to FLATTER my figure! Lord!
This boutique is amazing, dressing overweight brides soo beautiful, elegant and sophisticated.
This shop owner is beautiful, kind and funny.
Loved this episode! Shanelle was truly trying to keep the surprise off her face! Loved Emily's gown look 1 and 2
I loved how she embraced Marilyn and all of the curvy brides to make sure they know that they are ❤️ beautiful
Get rid of those grey curtains and put a door on those dressing rooms
@Julia Peiris I work in a bridal store. We wear black and have the decor neutral to set off dresses better.
Be kind
@@ChristinaI that makes sense
This must be a tiny building. The show room is claustrophobic. The bride is barely a foot away from the people in the chairs. She needs a little more distance to give a really big "Twirl" impact.
I absolutely loved this consultant. Could tell she was really thrown off by so much about this bride/couple, but she was SO supportive.
I absolutely love this shop owner. She is hilarious
That woman is kindness
The groom saw the dress but not on her. Smarty that girl.
Man she didn't hold back even a little bit on her opinions of the first couple. Honestly if I was looking for a dress and saw this episode I wouldn't want to go to her shop. If you have a job like hers you can't be making fun of your clients... at least on camera.

Such a beautiful story with the 2nd bride.
I love this series! The owner is so compassionate and all of the brides show such courage and are inspiring to others. I like how Haute & Co. encourages and shows such love to all. Next time I visit Chicago I plan on stopping by her business.
Idk why she talked about curves when the mom said 'flattering' tho... she said flattering not flattening ...
It's understanding what the word means. Flattering is a positive, complementary description.
That was a beautiful moment... Very touching brought tears to my eyes. Beautiful Dress
Praise the Lord!!! You go Sister Shanelle.
This show is beautiful! I adore the owner of this shop.
She's giving the bride's the confidence they deserve ,that's what's up😌
The owner was being so judgmental towards this bride.
Lol jk🤣
Why even get married, if you are polyamorous? Smh. It makes no sense to me.

Brides starting point: "We are polyamorous."
*Grandparents cry
Some people will go a long way to try to be unique and seem to be progressive. The man with the purple hair just looked ridiculous. And the bride was too anxious to tell a stranger that she and her man get horizontal with other people.

Polyamorous?
Why get married if you can’t commit to one partner and plan to cheat on each other?
I know. They're basically saying to each other "you're not enough for me".
My thoughts exactly....why get married!?
totally agree, a bit of a contradiction, as polyamorous is about not committing to one and yet marriage is a commitment ceremony.

I know this was a year ago so I hope her and her new husband the best of everything in life 😁
The third gown looked beautiful on her
Why get married if you're polyamorous?
Honestly probably just for the tax benefits
Same reason most monogamous couples. Because you want to stay with your partner forever and declare your love and so if your loved one gets sick you can be there for them.
*People have lost their damn minds*
This brought tears to my eyes. I love this episode
I hope more videos are posted soon ... I love this series ♥️
I cried with you Marylynn 😢 bless you 😇
I have to say I don't get flattering being a trigger word, if something is flattering it shows the bride's natural shape and enhances her beauty. I also felt like her reaction to the groom was a bit OTT like grooms are often more involved today and actually I would have thought she was rude.
What's wrong with the word "flattering"? I'm confused!! Would she rather the bride looked like a stuffed sausage? Embrassing!!
The third dress made the first girl being very beautiful.
So beautiful.
You need your own show
I'm confused, maybe it's because I've never been a bride, but wouldn't you want your fiance to be a part of the wedding planning? I see some people saying partner in planning = controlling, but I would want my boo to be a part of it. Making all the decisions alone sounds so exhausting and stressful. Although, the groom can wait outside while I figure out my dress.
Right?! The brides who don't allow their groom to have a say in any of it are the super controlling ones. That's not a partnership.
It should be a partnership for everything BUT the dress.
Choosing a wedding dress and actually marrying someone in full knowledge of the fact that they aren't and never will be enough both physically and emotionally... Interesting and a bit sad...
Looks beautiful
I use flattering all the time and my mom says it to me all the time with clothes. I take it as a complement when she says something looks flattering on me. I dont think she knows what the word means or she is taking it the completely wrong way!
That's weird that she thinks flattering has a negative connotation. Maybe because it sounds similar to fattening? Who knows.
As a heavy lady, people sometimes use "flattering" when what they really mean is "oh it hides all your lumps so well" and she's probably heard it often enough, with nasty enough tones, to form negative associations.
I think more to FLAT that’s why she referend to curves after that x
I absolutely love her
The story on Marilyn was so touching.
She usually does a little better with the brides and their uniqueness. Her empathy and support came back with the last bride. It looked like the first family had thick skin so hopefully, it was fine.
