Bonaire (Kralendijk) Cruise Port Guide: Sightseeing by Rental Car

Bonaire is a small island country located in the southern Caribbean Sea - north of Venezuela - that is known for its snorkeling, scuba diving, and warm weather. Together, Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao are known as the ABC islands. In this video, we’ll provide an overview of our December 2022 visit to Bonaire, when our ship - The Holland America Rotterdam - docked in the capital city of Kralendijk and we rented a car to explore some of the island’s southerly attractions.

Thank you for this review. How comfortable were you renting a vehicle here and driving around the island? What's the infrastructure like?

We were very comfortable driving around the island. Along the route we drove, the vehicles stayed well below the speed limit, so it was easy to just relax the entire time. The infrastructure is pretty good, but it's mostly roundabouts at intersections. The roads were pretty similar to what you would typically see in rural areas: not fantastic, but also not terrible. The "worst" part is that some of the roads had a bit of flooding during the heavy parts of the rain, but even that was manageable. Also, it's worth noting that we stayed mostly in the southern half of the island and we've heard people report more problems with the roads in the norther half of the island.

How much did the rental car cost?

We paid $52 for the rental, but insurance was *significantly* more (over $200). We declined the insurance because we were covered through our travel insurance policy. Some credit cards cover car rental insurance as well, so be sure to check your options.
