- My name is Jared Beckwith, I’m a registered EEG technologist. At my job I record patient brain activity using electrodes that go on top of the scalp. The test is called an electroencephalograph or EEG. I have always wanted my own EEG machine to record my brain, and in this video I talk about my plan to make my own diy eeg machine.

If your father is an electrical engineer he should have an oscilloscope. When you get your EEG running I would be curious if you could probe the same area with the scope and compare data collected. If its about the same it might be feasible to buy a few two channel scope pcbs from overseas to make a cheap EEG. Otherwise cool video man.
I’ve been thinking of a science fair project for my school. I saw a person play Elden Ring by using an EEG headset to interact with the world. This was awesome looking at and I want to do something similar. However, EEG aren’t cheap and if I could make one myself.
I was wondering if you could show how to make one from scratch haha.
It would help me get a head start on what I begin with and a timeline of what should be done.
I became interested in EEG after seeing someone control a drone with their mind. You’re right, the only downside is that it’s expensive. I’d look into OpenBCI or Emotiv for your goal. It’s going to cost at least a minimum of a few hundred dollars. It may sound like a lot, but a full hospital EEG equipment set is even more expensive at $10k+.

hey, i wanted to know if eeg can detect the different signals sent to perform different actions. Particularly I wanted to know if it could recognize the change in focus of the eyes as in the signal sent by the brain to change focus of the eyes to focus at different distances. Mainly to be used with eye tracking technology
On an EEG we also use 2 electrodes to track vertical and lateral eye movements. I think eye tracking technology would be better to track if eyes are focusing on a specific distance. There is a test called visual evoked potential that you may find interesting. By showing a stimulus of a flashing checkerboard, you can see if the electrical activity in the brain responds correctly.

off topic question. as an EEG tech or in clinicals, do you ever have to deal with needles, IVs or injections at all?

The best part about EEG is there’s no need for us to deal with needles! We leave all that stuff to the nurses

I’ve made a lot of progress since this video. Currently working on 32 channel hardware to record the whole brain. In about 6 months I’ll be able to make you one if you want. Our software is available for free to test now @ aioneeg.com

The board acts as the amplifier converting from analog to digital.
So you have an idea of how many watts those analog signals are? I also realize how small they are but is there a typical voltage/ampere for people? Also, when collecting these analog signals with the hospital equipment im assuming there is a ground or negative for the signsl to flow or are there two electrodes per section. One recieving the signal, open gate/collector pin, and then out the second electrode back into the head? I guess just smaking a small loop to drive a small opamp is how in picturing it. If im completely off and someone has the time to explain it I would be grateful. Ive just started scratching the surface on this topic but its interesting.
The normal EEG is around 100 uV. We use reference and ground electrode when recording. I’m not sure about your other questions, I’m trying to learn more about it myself!

What’s the limiting factor in taking this EEG project from 4 channels to 256 channels (i.e. dense array EEG for deep learning research)?
Asking to see if this would be a viable path to do machine learning on a broke man’s budget 😢
Right now I’m working on a 32 channel board to record the full brain. It is possible to stack 32 channel boards to make 256 channels. We had a high density EEG machine at my hospital, but they paid $200k for it. Building a 32 channel board from scratch will be about $1k, and a 256 channel stacked board would cost about $10k. I’m making a board to do the analog to digital conversion for 32 channels. I can email you a free version of my software if you put in your email @ aioneeg.com - once I finish the EEG analog to digital converter board I can let you know. I can send you electrodes/prep/conductive paste with it too. The project should be done in a few months I think!
Do you have a room with a Faraday cage on it? It's kinda necessary for precise eeg data
In the hospital our epilepsy monitoring rooms are set up to block out most electrical noise. Definitely not as good as a Faraday cage though!

I tried buying my own full EEG machine but the companies tried to charge like $10,000. The cheapest one I could find was from OpenBCI their “Ganglion” board for like $300. It only records 4 channels, but at least you don’t have to build it from scratch.

Yeah way too expensive! I feel like that keeps a lot of people from experimenting with EEG or BCI. Maybe I can build a device to record your brain for a low price in the future

Hello my name is Anthony a few months ago I moved onto a old property and there where personal items still left on the property when we purchased it. The previous owners daughter lives right next door. I know they are using an EEG machine and constantly monitoring what I’m doing. I believe this all started because of the personal belongings that where left on the property, they think they have a right to them still. I know there are speakers in the house that I’m living in and they have also installed them in my vehicle because they are always able to communicate with me, weather I’m speaking out loud or thinking something. They have been trying to keep me from taking or removing the belongings and do what they want me to do. There is a lot more but to much to say. Is there any way to block them from monitoring my brainwaves? How can I find the cameras or other equipment that Are able to monitor me? This is an invasion of my personal privacy right? I have a few questions if you could message me I would really appreciate it
An EEG can’t record your thoughts. It is only really used to detect epileptic activity. I wish you the best Anthony.

Hey you can email me Jared@aioneeg.com I can send you my EEG software with 15 test examples for free if that would help. If you need to actually record your own data on hardware, it cost me hundreds of dollars to buy the equipment and is technically challenging so be aware.
Why not use a gaming computer record and analyze the web data?
@@davesmith9188 you need an amplifier to record and convert the brain waves to a digital signal. Gaming computers are great to review EEG data after it is recorded though!

@@glumpfi I’ve seen visual and auditory evoked potentials before. Once I get a machine with more electrodes working I can show how EPs are done!
@@jaredbeckwith Yeah or some own experiments like watching a short video for 100 times and averaging out the signals so you can see what kind of EEG signal is generated by watching the video :D
