- Our first time watching Denis Villeneuve's Dune 2021 was one amazing scifi experience. We did not dive into the Dune books but we did hear they're amazing so we instead decided to do a first time Dune movie reaction with you all to the movie which inspired George Lucas Star Wars.

"He was just young"... Paul is 15 years and has never interacted with kids his own age until he meet Chani
Yueh's diamond forehead tattoo signifies his training at the Suk medical school. It's supposed to mean he's been conditioned such that he'd go mad before betraying a patient, and usually would mean that. But his wife is Bene Gesserit and has so much control over his emotions that a threat to her can overcome his medical training. The Harkonnens realize that and use it against him. But they also realize neither Yueh nor his wife can live, because the BG would be furious at the Harkonnens if they found out. Yueh himself realizes that his wife is already dead and he has no chance of surviving, hence the tooth gambit to get revenge on the Baron, and helping Paul and Jessica.
0:32 No it is not Earth in the future. This takes place on many different planets far away in this galaxy.
The setting for this story is 10,000 years after Earth has been annihilated in a war with Thinking Machines. None of these people are from Earth. They are the evolved descendants of people who left Earth centuries before the war.
Definitely not earth in the future. It’s 20k years from now and humans have completely forgot about earth and where we originated.
Earth is in this universe, however its location has been lost for a long time.
It's 10,000 or so, years since the establishment of the spacing guild. Over 20,000 years from now.

The mouse with the big ears isn't sweating. It's large ears collect what little moisture there is in the air. When it condenses, it drips down to the mouse's head and the mouse drinks it.
I kind of wondered that when I was editing. Makes sense though
I love the fact that Fremen use the sandworms as Uber rides.
One thing the older David Lynch DUNE has on this one, is that Patrick Stewart carries a cute pug in his arms into battle with the Sardaukar :p
5:05 It's 10191 on their calendar.
It's more like 24,300 if they still used our calendar. It's 10191 years from the Butlerian Jihad, which frames their timeline. That doesn't happen for about 15000 years.

Great point about them not looking “human” anymore. In the books the characters are described as seeming very ordinary by our standards externally. But on the inside they are nothing like us.
I always say we are probably more like our caveman ancestors than we are to the characters in Dune.

Music Enthusiast Fact: The use of Pink Floyd's song Eclipse (1973) in the first trailer caused the song to skyrocket on streaming music platforms by 1700%.
Lost In Adaptation Fact: This film sports a distinctly Arabic theme, in keeping with author Frank Herbert having used Islamic culture as an influence for his story.
Location Location Fact: The scenes on the ocean world of Caladan were shot in Stadlandet, Norway. Much of the desert scenes on the desert world of Arrakis were shot in Jordan and Abu Dhabi, in the Middle East.
Fan Filmmakers Fact: Composer Hans Zimmer is a big fan of the novel Dune, and turned down working with frequent collaborator Christopher Nolan on Tenet (2020) to score this film. For the same reason, Denis Villeneuve was the top choice but turned down the offer to direct the Bond film No Time To Die (2021).

I think the importance of showing they still have very current age objects in the future is to show that tradition is a huge part of culture and it grounds us to remind us this is humanity in the future, and the possibilities it holds, making it seem almost alien. They still take pride in their roots and hold traditions close to them.

It's wonderful to see many other Dune fans contributing useful and insightful comments.
0:51 you know when people say this or that is better I say whichever one you like especially about this version of Dune. Iif you're not interested in a bunch of details such as the doctors betrayal more about the housekeeper etc etc then this movie captures the spirit and essence of the book. I could sit through a week long series done in this style. Imagine the first billion dollar series. 🤪

46:00 Duncan was able to find Paul because the doctor put a special signal in the kit along with the tent and other equipment. Dunkin homed in on it.
48:39 spoke too soon again but this is the end.
Duncan was able to find them in the desert because of the Atreides beacon that he gave them in their kit. It was in the note from him that Paul read but it was easy to miss.
14:05 The Emperor isn’t shown in this movie. But he basically sided with the Harkonnens to wipe out the Atreides.
Like Duke Leto told his son Paul, the Emperor is really trying to ruin and weaken both Houses by pulling this move.
Sad part is the Emperor is actually cousin to the Atreides. But he is a jealous and dangerous man.
It’s also said stated in the book it’s because of a formal feud between houses otherwise known as “Kanly” or vendetta.
The atreides, harkonnen, and corino houses are the three greatest and also the most closely related. The baron also mentions this when referring to duke Leto as cousin
@@mrdavman13 At the time of the Butlerian Jihad, there were two military commanders one from the Harkonnen family and the other from what would one day be House Atreides leading the fight.
They were close friends and brothers in arms. But at a critical point in the final battle orbiting Earth, a serious disagreement lead to the Harkonnen being charged with cowardice. He was demoted in rank and exiled.
However, due to wounded pride and grief over a mutual loss, the two men never reconciled. So a schism began that lasted for thousands of years.
As for family connections, I like how the director decided to leave two bombshells for Part 2.
In the book there is a conversation between the Emperor and the Barron where the Barron realizes just how badly the Emperor screwed him and his house over

Dune is one of the most influential science fiction stories of the last 60 or so years. This was before Star Trek or Star Wars.
George Lucas admits that many of the concepts in Star Wars were adapted from things he saw in Dune.

@anth-nyl Recently I heard Lucas paid a settlement to Frank Herbert after Star Wars came out.
That said I love SW because it is a mishmash of a LOT of folklore and stories told throughout human history. Lucas read the Joseph Campbell books about common myths. So he has always admitted the source he borrowed from.
Strange, I recently read that Lucas had never actually publicly acknowledged that he ripped off Dune.

Super happy you did this film! The books are very near and dear to me.
The Duniverse is so vast and rich, and it’s speculative ideas of humanity’s future feels like a possibility to me, you know besides the extrasensory abilities and stuff.
It takes place in our future universe in other star systems within our Milky Way galaxy, and about 20,000 years from today. It’s also about 10,368 years after something called the Machine Crusade, where humanity violently fought against the “thinking machines” (A.I.) and that’s why there aren’t really many robots in the Duniverse, only standard functioning computers but nothing emulating the brain.
One of the commandments after the Bulterian Jihad from the Orange Catholic Bible is “Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind” which is punishable by death.
Humanity had to mentally advance and ultimately replace the ancient computer’s speedy processing of information, so we basically developed organic human super computers called “Mentats” which became superior to even humanity’s ancient “thinking machines”.
The author grounded a lot of the story elements in real natural sciences, ecology, psychology, economics, politics, anthropology, and evolution.
24:11 It’s not mentioned in the movie, but because of the war with Artificial Intelligences highly advanced computers are outlawed. Without AI humans had to evolve to take up the slack. That is why so many people in this story have almost superhuman physical and mental abilities. They have been bred for this over centuries.
This chubby fellow here trying to resign is Thufir Hawat the master of assassins (and spies) for House Atreides. He is also a human supercomputer called a Mentat.
Paul has the potential to become a Mentat himself, but Thufir never got the chance to train him.
With his mother’s Bene Gesserit training, fighting skills from Gurney and Duncan and being a potential Mentat, Paul is already one of the deadliest people alive. He just doesn’t know it yet.
The Director had to leave out a LOT from the books when making this movie.
Wait I thought in the books Thufir Hawat already train Paul as a mentat (Duke Leto ask him to), thats why people call him (SPOILER: Mentat Emperor)….. I need to reread the book 😅

@@megzkirana3824 At the beginning of the first book, Duke Leto discloses to Paul that some of the special training Thufir had done up to that point was because Paul was a potential Mental. But in order to move forward, Paul had to become an active and aware participant in the process. But to your point Paul is called the Mental Emperor. I guess he managed to get the rest of the way on his own.
The Bene Gesserit has the ability to choose the sex of either a boy or a girl, which is why the reverend mother scolded her for having a son instead of a daughter.
Your reactions and commentary were great!!! Dune is a weird book, famously 'impossible' to adapt to screen so I'm glad you could understand and appreciate a lot of it! You HAVE TO watch the second part, Dune II, it's the conclusion and would be great to see how you two react to it!
This was the most wholesome reaction I've seen of this movie. Love this film. Definitely go see Part Two if you can in theaters. It's epic and beautiful! And also can't wait to see more reactions from you guys. Subscribed for sure :)

Its seen as disrespectful to Fremen culture to not kill your opponent in a one-on-one challenge. Paul’s visions arent exactly true to what becomes reality. They’re just the different paths in the future

Sci fi movies are so intriguing. You should watch Blade runner 1982 (Final Cut) also the newer one 2049, both are my favorite movies! Really good dialogue, deep messages, and a dark eerie neo noir futuristic vibe to its scenery, I highly recommend!
I honestly think this is my first Sci Fi movie but yeah I have to admit. This one definitely feels like it pulled me in on so many parts

The reason Duncan found them in the desert after the city fell, he found them due to the Atreides beacon that the Doctor put in the Frem-kit that Lady Jessica and Paul found in the thopter after escaping and killing the three detaining them.
17:04 Bene Gesserit have such powerful control of their bodies that they can choose the gender of their child. They can even stop their heart at will.

As a huge fan of the book, this film is a decent adaption. But yes, the book is 100x better 😂A lot of the plot was cut or trimmed for the film. My personal pet peeve is the change to Lady Jessica. Jessica NEVER cries. She is a ruthless, calculating, superwoman. In the book, she paralyzes Thufir with a word. He is terrified of her. When she overpowers Stilgar, she moves so fast its like she teleports behind him with the knife. Only Paul is more powerful, but he is young. Film part 2 changes a LOT from the book. But watch it since you haven't read the book 🙂

Duncan found Paul and his mother because Dr Yuweh put a beacon in the frem kit in hopes someone would survive the Harkonnen siege and find them.

@@CampCrystalCharlie what is explained more in the books, is his wife is being repeatedly tortured over and over. He KNOWS that the Baron will not honor his word and kill her, and him.; but its the only way to free her from this torment.

In the book, Dr. Yueh knew he couldn’t free his wife. He knew Baron Harkonnen wouldn’t honor his word. Yueh was trapped. He had agreed to the Baron’s demands so that his wife would be given the mercy of death instead of suffering more torture. After he had betrayed the Atreides, he and his wife were no longer needed by the Harkonnens and would be killed, of course. He was aware of all this.
Yueh’s wife was Bene Gesserit and she had taught him their powers of acute observation and their ability to detect lies. Yueh wanted to see the Baron in person, so he could make sure from the Baron’s behavior and words that his wife was already dead. Yueh knew he wouldn’t survive, but made sure to get his revenge on the Baron by double-crossing him: using Duke Leto to get close enough to the Baron to kill him with poison gas. Also, he helped Paul (the last Atreides) survive the invasion, which deprived the Baron of complete victory.
Denis Villeneuve could have explained this in his adaptation. Unfortunately, he spent too much time on the visuals and not enough on character development and lore. He has also said he doesn’t like much dialogue in his films, but this film needed it because the book it’s based on is full of details.

The reason Duncan Idaho found Paul n Jessica exact location is because Paul had a beacon in the tent n it sends signal n Duncan found it Paul read the letter about the beacon n if anyone survives they will find you remember Paul read the letter in the tent. Letter was written by the doctor

10:36 The Atreides and the Harkonnens have been feuding with each other for centuries ever since the destruction of Earth. The original reason for the feud has practically been forgotten.
That is why the Baron Harkonnen was willing to spend so much money trying to destroy his enemies.
During an ancient battle many years ago, the Head of House Atreides branded the Harkonens as cowards because they fled during a battle which helped establish the Imperium, the Harkonens have never managed to shake the shame and have hated the Atreides ever since
I think what she heard about Earth before was just that it exists in this universe. Meaning that all the humans we see originated from Earth and that this story is set in our distant future. Earth itself in this story was destroyed thousands of years ago, and most of humanity has even forgotten about it and most of our pre-interstellar history. Only the extremely rich and educated (Like the Bene Gesserit) have access to any scholarship to be able to remember “Old Terra” which is how they refer to Earth.

Great reaction! Ya’ll did your thing. Dune is like game of thrones but in space! At this point humans are no longer on earth. The idea is that when humans migrate to different planets suitable for life, we’ll evolve and adapt to the new planets. This gives humans distinct characteristics.
P.s. “the voice” is a secret skill that can be learned. It isn’t magic!

@@CampCrystalCharlie As much as I like content, I would encourage you to see part 2 in theaters, specifically in IMAX. It's on a different level that you can't really describe unless you experience it yourself.
SHE WAS IN SPIDER MAN MOVIES
When the Reverend Mother tells Jessica that "she was told to bear only daughters", that's actually not an exaggeration. The Bene Gesserit are a milennia-old conclave of exceptionally powerful women who are trained from a young age to harness skills only they're capable of.
The most obvious one is The Voice, which they use to influence galactic politics all over the universe. Essentially they're the ones who guide human history, according to their design. They're also trained in a special form of physical combat called Weirding, which we see Jessica do near the end of the film to subdue Stilgar (Javier Bardiem). On top of that, they're able to manipulate their bodies in various ways, such as poison transmutation (literally disintegrating poison to the molecular level so it doesn't affect them) and manipulating the gender of a fetus during procreation.
So Jessica could have easily birthed a daughter instead of Paul if she wished, but she wants Paul to become the Lisan al Gaib, as he's the only one capable of not only liberating Arrakis, but also standing up against the Bene Gesserit and their control over the universe.
Jessica’s motive for having a son is because she truly loved Leto and he wanted a son. Leto was a widower went they met having lost his first wife and son to treachery.
She wasn’t trying to create the Kwitzach Haderach or the Lisan Al Gaib ( which is a myth created by the Bene Gesserit). She was simply trying to be a good supportive partner to Leto.
It is her mother the Reverend Mother Mohiam who accused her of trying to create in Paul the Kwitzach Haderach (KH) which is the furthest thing from the truth. Jessica knows about the breeding plan and she knows that the KH isn’t due for at least another generation or two.
Because the BG sisterhood focus so much on control of self and others they barely acknowledge love like other human beings. They view most human interactions as little more than animal instinct hence the Box test.
But in Duke Leto she found a man who is strong willed, charismatic, honorable and loving . His inner circle of military advisers love him and his family fiercely because of this. When met with such geniune feelings Jessica fell in love with Leto and broke from the sisterhood plan. Fortunately, Leto also fell in love with her. Out of that love the KW was created.

I read a few of the dune novels when I was younger, wierd as phuk.
They are very dense and not exactly light reading.

Yeah, if you can't easily visualise what is being described, dune isn't for you. Reading it a few times over, is part of the fun I found.
52:33, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen was the inspiration for Jabba the Hut in Star Wars. Also the attendant saying "his healing isn't complete" wasn't female. Unlike, Jabba the Hut, the Baron prefers his scantily clad young attendants to be of a more of a masculine variety 😉

The only thing I didn't like was that we didn't get Dave Bautista (Rabban) vs. Jason Momoa (Duncan). That feels overdue. Hope that buddy-cop thing materializes.

@@CampCrystalCharlie The Dune books are so full of backstory on these characters I wish they had been able to add in some lines to explore it. Next to Gurney, Duncan is my favorite supporting character.
Duncan Idaho has been with House Atreides his whole life. He was a young stable boy tending the bulls that Leto’s father Duke Paulus used to fight. After Paulus died in the arena, it was Duncan’s testimony that exposed an assassination conspiracy that involved Leto’s mother.
After this revelation, young Duke Leto exiled his mom to a place far away from him on Caladan. So Leto essentially became an orphan overnight. Thereafter, he also outlawed bull fighting on Caladan. At this time, Leto wasn’t much older than Paul in this movie.
With the loss of both his parents, Leto had only his father’s Mentat advisor Thufir Hawat for help. However, Leto one day ran into Duncan in the now empty bull stables and they began to talk. Leto realized that this young kid was brave, smart and had potential beyond tending to livestock. Over time, Duncan became Leto’s protege and a surrogate little brother.
When he was old enough Duncan became a soldier in the Atreides army. Due to his fighting prowess, Leto sent Duncan to the Ginaz Swordmaster school. After graduation, Duncan quickly became a legendary fighter in his own time.
That’s why Duncan is so great with a blade and why he is so loyal to the Atreides.

the books are cool till heretics then it gets weird ... lol ..... but seriously another reactor said the original told you a lot of the story this one shows you a lot of the story but and thats what makes this one meh for me it was visually awesome but lost chunks of story or was "altered" for no reason if you watch the 84 version you get the low down on everything in the first few min the guild the emperor the spice the fremen the great houses the atreides the harkonnens all in say 5 min opening all lost because zendaya's colonizer speech ... also her character was nothing like this one and there was no reason to change it imo
