IMHO making a DHCP reservation is better than setting static IP's on devices. For multiple reasons: 1. If you ever get a new router with a different subnet, or change your network configuration your devices won't be able to connect anymore. You'd have to change them one by one. 2. Any other DHCP settings you've set, like DNS, hostname or NTP servers won't work anymore 3. (You've made this clear in your video) You have set it from each device individualy. DHCP reservations are made from a single interface. No critisism, just advice. You made it look like a last resort while it's a great way to do it. Great video as always! Keep it up.
I agree on this. When my network changed some settings, all of my receipt printers (restaurant) went offline and had to be manually configured again because the router I had before did not support dhcp reservation or static routing. Pain in the ass. Thank you Ubiquiti for solving my issues
Good question, when the device reboots, the router will see the same MAC address and instead of leasing it an IP address, it will give it the static route you assigned earlier. The router will never hand out a random DHCP address if it is set up correctly.
Thanks for the review Lon, great work as expected! I am working on setting up this camera on montioneyeos for the Raspberry Pi. I would suggest giving that a look as is much cheaper then synolgy and you can auto upload to google drive or drop box with it.

Thank for this guide. I bought one and now I have installed the custom firmware and set it up in my living room. I hooked it into a Smart Plug Wifi Mini. On my server, i'm running a virtual box with diet pie pi VM image which makes it really easy to install Pie hole OpenVPN server. Now remotely I can connect into my VPN voice activate the camera to turn it on via google and then connect into it. All while never exposing the camera to the outside world yet still be able to view it.

With the stock firmware when it gets dark the IR lights kick in and I can see in the dark. That doesn't seem to be working. It won't automatically switch to night mode when it gets dark. Also, I can't use the two sound any more. Did you find a work around for these features?

I thought it was going to be easy but man looking at all those folders in the first 5 minutes got me in a panic mode I don't know what the hell he's saying.. is in there any simple surveillance camera channel on this damn RUclips Maze 4 senior citizens or non Savvy types to understand and protect their homes without having to be in Nikolai Tesla
Glad to see you're trying OpenIPC for your Wyze cam. I left a comment a month or so ago about it. I really did not trust my data in foreign countries with the stock firmware. Does this support the pan and tilt version?
Your data isn't going to foreign countries, this has been covered thoroughly elsewhere. To recap, all recordings go to Amazon AWS. Connection brokering for mobile access was done with a third party IoT provider called ThroughTek that had globally hosted servers (this is why you don't have to set up port forwarding for it to work). They've since modified the arrangement and now only US-based ThroughTek servers are used. The actual data communication between your phone and the Wyze cam is encrypted (AES 128), so even some foreign entity was trying to listen in, all they'd see is encrypted data.
I really wish you would do a walk through for this on the v1 model. It seems to be extremely different and instead of throwing the old models away it would be nice to set them up as onvif via an NVR. Any chance you can do this soon? Would be awesome!!!

As of 2/25/19 OpenIPC does not work on newer Wyze Cam V2 due to a change in the hardware. You will get error saying Unable to Load Video. My older V2 still works but the ones I purchased week before all have same issue.

@@ngates87 Try this, see if it works. In the settings set the fps to 25 and but rate 250. I'm now completely on dafang hack with custom bootloader but see if that solution works on Openipc. Also there's RTSP in the works by Wyze. Not sure when it will be available though!

Surely editing that plain text in the httpasswd.conf isn't going to do anything - that line is just a comment? I'd think you'd need to actually use htpasswd to generate the encrypted version.
Followed tutorial. Had two issues: 1) needed to remove the .dist extension for all conf files in the config directory (all *.conf.dist become .conf). 2) Don't attempt to use a 64gb card
This does not work on my new v2 cam, I get no video out from it, so I went to install the original firmwear as you say in your video and it will not load. Looks like camera is not any good now.
Excellent video. I followed instructions and was able to install firmware. Unfortunately, I found openipc firmware to be quite buggy and unreliable on my wazecam v2. Used what I learned from this video to successfully install Xiaomi-Dafang-Hacks which is a bit more reliable.

No. From what I have read, the IR capability in WyzeCams is software controlled, not hardware. And, so far, the Dafang Hacks firmware does not have that ability. I think the earlier models of this camera did have a hardware chip for IR, but definitely not the version 2.

DO NOT FLASH IF YOU HAVE A V2. It will not work properly, means you get into the interface, but now video/stream! I'm struggling to find a solution. Community says it's because of new motion sensor in newer V2 models like mine (Aug 2019)!

Hi Lon, can you test this with a solar powered USB battery pack? I'd love to have a way to get a few of these mounted outdoors under an easement with a outdoor case and the battery packs running power for them. I'm assuming this firmware will use more power though?
Forgot to mention I got the cube seems to work okay no sound on the SD card when I play it in my smartphone do you know why there's no sound? I don't have internet only on the smartphone . Can I use my smartphone to access the different features on the tube? Is there a way to just use it as a CCTV connected to record on a tablet or laptop? I also bought a wyze cam pan. To do that we must also change the IP address server in the wize camera in order to receive the streaming in our server (using only the 80 port). Any idea if we can modify the firmware to do that. I don't think that the "openip.cam" website is correct anymore. I tried going there and it looked a bit suspicious... It wanted to "do a security check" and change my search engine / provider... I exited that page VERY quickly...
He mentioned changing the password because anyone on the internet can find it? Does this mod the original firmware or replace the original with completely different custom firmware? Does this firmware automatically open a port on the router if you had UPnP on? By default, I would assume this would be transmitted only on the local LAN?
Can you increase the frame rate in the web browser? Also is there a way to use this with an app on my phone using my local wifi connection connected to a router that is not connected to the internet.
So, the latest version of Surveillance Station doesn't seem to work. When set to "User Define" the options change. You select type (rtsp, http or file) and no matter what I input, i get "Failed to load camera capabilities values". So I cannot finish the camera install. Any thoughts??
It's not working for me either. Even entering "rtsp://DAFANG:ismart12@192.168.1.XX:8554/unicast" in Synology's new (more complicated) user define set-up dialogue. Despite this, I can get the RTSP feed on my local network through VLC player at rtsp://192.168.1.XX:8554/unicast
Not likely that they are but IS possibles, yes. I only use the cameras with Wyze firmware in public areas, like my front yard and backyard for this reason.
I was able to log in the first time following the video, without changing anything, password or host name, now on the sign in window it says your connection to this site is not private and when I log in with the default name and password it wont let me log in anymore. How can I fix this? I even tried erasing the card, redownloading the firmware, changing and installing to sd card again (per the video) and it says the same thing without allowing me to log in. Please help.
Thank you for this. Two points:1( Editing the password file does not seem to work. 2( Does the sim card need to stay in the camera? I cannot get it to work without it and that increases the price of this whole setup significantly.
I already tested it. 1) You have to keep the SD card intact, but you could use cheap SD cards, but the size of the SD card doesn't matter too much. I was able to buy 5 8GB SD cards on amazon for like $20. 2) It recovers on it's own. After you flash the firmware, it will load off the SD card. My guess as you why it needs the SD card is likely because there isn't enough onboard storage to hold the custom firmware. But as far as I can tell, it recovers and reconnects on it's own once configured. So, you dont have to press and hold the button every time.
Well changing the password does not work based on the instructions. It is a known issue according to the github boards on this item. Also, the night vision option is no longer working so I have to try another camera... but I only spent 26 dollars on it...
can you go back to stock firmware later? or is it a permanent change? wanna try it but not sure i want to lose ability to use wyzecloud if i end up not liking or able to get RTSP server working how i want for this project.
getting "unable to load image" error - no video or images. Networking and everything else seems to be working as expected. I was able to change the hostname by editing the config file, but the password wont change - seems to be hard coded. Tried reflashing multiple times, no luck on the password change or the "unable to load image". Deal breakers. Too bad, I was hopeful to connect this to my QNAP NAS.
Can you remove the SD card after setting up, and use the same card for setting up other wyze cameras? In other words, does the card need to stay in the camera while running? Does each camera need their own card?
I have followed your instructions to a t but its not appearing on my 2.4 network, no matter what I do. I made absolutely sure the network name and password is exactly like in the router settings. I changed the network name and password in the text editor and the changes were saved. I do get the yellow light on the camera after it reads the custom firmware but nothing on my network. Please help
I have watched this video several times and I can't see how you are getting to the administrative web page for the camera. I see the page at 13:46 where you are changing the cameras setup. I can not get my camera to respond to it's web address (192.168.2.16) on my network. I have my camera working since 4/23/2019 with my Synology and my phone as well. I would love to be able to control the camera options from a web page like you did here but don't get any response from it in my browser (Chrome in Windows 10). I have the phone app and it does not have all the controls that that web page showed in your video. If this thing has a web setup page like a regular IP Camera that would be great! I can Ping the Camera and it does stream to my Synology or VLC with it's RSTP live stream address. If you could help that would be great!
Are you using the official Wyze firmware or the open one? As far as I can remember this screen was available on the camera's web page. I recommend people use the official wyze firmware now as it's easier to deal with.
To change default password do following: 1. Go to url: aspirine.org/htpasswd_en.html 2. In left text put "user password" per line. (space between user & password) 3. On right side choose "crypt()" option 4. Hit "Generate htpasswd content" 5. Copy generated text & replace htpasswd.conf content with it. Tested on Wyze cam v2.
Has anyone been able to change the root password for the updated firmware? Instructions in the video for this don't seem to work and the standard unix options don't seem to work either...

hi, i have problems changing the default password. followed the instructions. the new password is in the htpasswd.conf file. i saved and rebooted. but it only accepts the default password. any ideas what is going wrong, how to fix it? thanks.
I think Lon might have misstated that.. if you look at the file the password is a comment... the next line looks like it has the encrypted password... i'm not 100% sure but I think you'll have to encrypt the password and place that string in the file. I only starting playing with this last night, when I do a deep drive and have time to fgiure that out I'll pass it along
this method no longer works. I made it all the way to connecting to wireless (checking on browser view as well) synology's new version of surveillance station broke this feature by changing 'user define' category. that being said, I am still going to keep this camera because it is a neat toy. kinda bummed out it no longer works with Synology nor QNAP.
It worked for me. Used rtsp://DAFANG:ismart12@192.168.1.XX:8554/unicast for path where XX was my router assigned IP for camera. Changed password config file and changed ismart12 to new password and it still worked.
I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to do this for 3 days now. That site is gone and I have tried 3 other firmwares from github , all with no luck. Did something change?. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. If I cannot get this to work completely offline then I will just return them.
Ended up returning them Apparently they changed a chip which basically nullifies this. Tried 3 other suggestions with firmware flashes that supposedly worked with the new chips but none worked. Too bad
Wyze had several hardware versions. These instructions/firmware are older and likely apply to the early revs of the v2. I forget what they changed...I think it was the image sensor.
How do I change the resolution? It defaults to 640x360 and won't save new settings. I'm trying to set it to 1600x900 as this is the maximum supported by the firmware.
From what I gathered so far the firmware resolution is already set to maximum 1600x900 and may crash or do strange things if set otherwise by the NVR system. What you see is now depends on the software you use or the NVR system but not the camera itself.
Dumb question but if I got the Xi model of this camera could I do the same mod as the video just the Xi model is much cheaper than the wyze or neos models I'm going to guess I can ? I'm going to try this anyway I think :)
When i put the SD card in the camera and hold the button down and plug in power, I never get the blue light. It goes straight to the lady saying "ready to connect". Any thoughts?
I got this error when i formatted the SD with anything other than FAT. I was trying EX-FAT but that didn't work. I have a 32 GB SD Card and it worked using FAT
i've baught a xiaofang, installed firmwire_mod>v2 from github, camera get connected to router, i can see it in dhcp client list, opened the web interface using "dafang"&"ismart12"(clicked start on "Start H264 RTSP"), but i am not able to stream via rtsp, i am using vlc player......can anyone help?
If it's not streaming to VLC player, I would try rebooting it. From what I can tell, the resolution doesn't change from 640x360. So, if you changed it, that might be why it's not working.
@@hasnatjamil8821 I would try erasing the SD card and start over. The settings are stored on the SD card, so, simply reflashing it won't fix it unless you erase the SD card. In fact, after you do the initial holding the the button when powering it on, you don't need to do it again. Simply erasing the SD card (I would even try reformatting it if it's giving you issues) and copying over what's in the v2 folder all over again. And just entering your WiFi SSID and password into the config file again.
Appreciate the very detailed description but you repeat alot which I assume is for clarity but honestly, being a video, if someone misses something, they can re-wind. I keep finding myself saying "move on....I know how to edit a text file."

Changing the password in the comment line will have no effect. If you want to change the password, you'll need to generate a correct htpasswd hash. There is an online utility to help you do this at: www.htaccesstools.com/htpasswd-generator/ Copy and paste the result into the .htpasswd file and save it. Then re-flash the camera.

New York's housing court system is so corrupt against landlords.. without a good lawyer to protect your name these judges keep stereotyping landlords as opportunistic.. with this pandemic catastrophe. Well I took in 3 homeless people save them from the cold weather and not being able to sleep on the subways late at night anymore.. thinking I was doing a humanitarian thing now I'm stuck with this cursive thing called squatter's rights.. any good deed you do the city's going to turn around and crucify you in court if I attempt to take out the destructive individuals.. I can't find an honest lawyer to help me without looking for an opportunity to gouge me.. sting has been very stressful and also haven't been able to secure some rents from past years. Its putting me in a finaI burden.. so not knowing how to surveillance my house except from these Bunker Hill analog cameras which have helped me. But recording it on a old-fashioned VCR.. is there a way to use a modern recording device without having to go on the internet just need it as a CCTV camera surveillance recording system. Can you digress and go back and help us senior citizens protecting our homes? Adam, for remote connect into your VPN you have Static public IP addr or using dynamic DNS.

You're right. It is commented out with a #. So how to change the password, is there something in the firmware interface?

I don't have a camera to test it, but it appears if you edit the boa.conf and uncomment Listen on line 43 you can set your ip address there.

Some .dist files are related to a camera with motion option thus not all .dist files are necessary depends on the camera model you specifically have.
Assign a static route to the camera through your router interface.

Hi Lon, can you test this with a solar powered USB battery pack? I'd love to have a way to get a few of these mounted outdoors under an easement with a outdoor case and the battery packs running power for them. I'm assuming this firmware will use more power though?
I don't think it will use more power than the native firmware would. I believe this camera draws about 5 watts.
Forgot to mention I got the cube seems to work okay no sound on the SD card when I play it in my smartphone do you know why there's no sound? I don't have internet only on the smartphone . Can I use my smartphone to access the different features on the tube? Is there a way to just use it as a CCTV connected to record on a tablet or laptop? I also bought a wyze cam pan. It only worked the first 2 times I set it up current after that it doesn't do anything..thank you. Hi. thanks for the video. I would like to receive the streaming in our cloud server to develop a people counter system. To do that we must also change the IP address server in the wize camera in order to receive the streaming in our server (using only the 80 port). Any idea if we can modify the firmware to do that. I don't think that the "openip.cam" website is correct anymore. I tried going there and it looked a bit suspicious... It wanted to "do a security check" and change my search engine / provider... I exited that page VERY quickly...

He mentioned changing the password because anyone on the internet can find it? Does this mod the original firmware or replace the original with completely different custom firmware? Does this firmware automatically open a port on the router if you had UPnP on? By default, I would assume this would be transmitted only on the local LAN?
No I was referring to anyone on the local network, not the internet. But if the camera is accessible outside the LAN it would be vulnerable.
Can you increase the frame rate in the web browser?
Also is there a way to use this with an app on my phone using my local wifi connection connected to a router that is not connected to the internet.

So, the latest version of Surveillance Station doesn't seem to work. When set to "User Define" the options change. You select type (rtsp, http or file) and no matter what I input, i get "Failed to load camera capabilities values". So I cannot finish the camera install.

It's not working for me either. Even entering "rtsp://DAFANG:ismart12@192.168.1.XX:8554/unicast" in Synology's new (more complicated) user define set-up dialogue. Despite this, I can get the RTSP feed on my local network through VLC player at rtsp://192.168.1.XX:8554/unicast

Not likely that they are but IS possibles, yes. I only use the cameras with Wyze firmware in public areas, like my front yard and backyard for this reason.

Yes Synology has a two camera limit. Adding more than two requires purchasing a licence.
I was able to log in the first time following the video, without changing anything, password or host name, now on the sign in window it says your connection to this site is not private and when I log in with the default name and password it wont let me log in anymore. How can I fix this? I even tried erasing the card, redownloading the firmware, changing and installing to sd card again (per the video) and it says the same thing without allowing me to log in. Please help.

Two points:1( Editing the password file does not seem to work. 2( Does the sim card need to stay in the camera? I cannot get it to work without it and that increases the price of this whole setup significantly.
Do you have to leave the sd card in the camera to work or can you take it out once it is setup?
As was pointed out in the video on changing the password, it will read the conf files on boot, so I'm going to assume yes you need the sd card.
What happens when the camera restarts after the house lost the power? Will I need to hold the button in order to load the config from the card?
I already tested it. 1) You have to keep the SD card intact, but you could use cheap SD cards, but the size of the SD card doesn't matter too much. I was able to buy 5 8GB SD cards on amazon for like $20. 2) It recovers on it's own. After you flash the firmware, it will load off the SD card.
My guess as you why it needs the SD card is likely because there isn't enough onboard storage to hold the custom firmware. But as far as I can tell, it recovers and reconnects on it's own once configured. So, you dont have to press and hold the button every time.

Well changing the password does not work based on the instructions. It is a known issue according to the github boards on this item. Also, the night vision option is no longer working so I have to try another camera... but I only spent 26 dollars on it...

getting "unable to load image" error - no video or images. Networking and everything else seems to be working as expected. I was able to change the hostname by editing the config file, but the password wont change - seems to be hard coded. Tried reflashing multiple times, no luck on the password change or the "unable to load image". Deal breakers. Too bad, I was hopeful to connect this to my QNAP NAS.
The only thing I get is a orange light and a ready to connect voice....
Can you remove the SD card after setting up, and use the same card for setting up other wyze cameras? In other words, does the card need to stay in the camera while running? Does each camera need their own card?

Use the fing app on your phone (download the app) it should list all the devices with IP addresses on your network.
I have followed your instructions to a t but its not appearing on my 2.4 network, no matter what I do. I made absolutely sure the network name and password is exactly like in the router settings. I changed the network name and password in the text editor and the changes were saved. I do get the yellow light on the camera after it reads the custom firmware but nothing on my network. Please help

I have watched this video several times and I can't see how you are getting to the administrative web page for the camera. I see the page at 13:46 where you are changing the cameras setup. I can not get my camera to respond to it's web address (192.168.2.16) on my network. I have my camera working since 4/23/2019 with my Synology and my phone as well. I would love to be able to control the camera options from a web page like you did here but don't get any response from it in my browser (Chrome in Windows 10). I have the phone app and it does not have all the controls that that web page showed in your video. If this thing has a web setup page like a regular IP Camera that would be great! I can Ping the Camera and it does stream to my Synology or VLC with it's RSTP live stream address. If you could help that would be great!
Are you using the official Wyze firmware or the open one? As far as I can remember this screen was available on the camera's web page. I recommend people use the official wyze firmware now as it's easier to deal with.

To change default password do following:
1. Go to url: aspirine.org/htpasswd_en.html
2. In left text put "user password" per line. (space between user & password)
3. On right side choose "crypt()" option
4. Hit "Generate htpasswd content"
5. Copy generated text & replace htpasswd.conf content with it.
Tested on Wyze cam v2.
after you transfer the file over to cam, do you leave the sd in the cam or can you take it out?
you leave the sd card, the modified firmware boots from the sd card

This does not work for the V1 version of the Wyze Cam. The files in the download folder are significantly different than the V2 folder.

hi, i have problems changing the default password. followed the instructions. the new password is in the htpasswd.conf file. i saved and rebooted. but it only accepts the default password. any ideas what is going wrong, how to fix it? thanks.
I think Lon might have misstated that.. if you look at the file the password is a comment... the next line looks like it has the encrypted password... i'm not 100% sure but I think you'll have to encrypt the password and place that string in the file. I only starting playing with this last night, when I do a deep drive and have time to fgiure that out I'll pass it along

this method no longer works. I made it all the way to connecting to wireless (checking on browser view as well) synology's new version of surveillance station broke this feature by changing 'user define' category. that being said, I am still going to keep this camera because it is a neat toy. kinda bummed out it no longer works with Synology nor QNAP.
It worked for me. Used rtsp://DAFANG:ismart12@192.168.1.XX:8554/unicast for path where XX was my router assigned IP for camera. Changed password config file and changed ismart12 to new password and it still worked.

I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to do this for 3 days now. That site is gone and I have tried 3 other firmwares from github , all with no luck. Did something change?. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. If I cannot get this to work completely offline then I will just return them.

Ended up returning them Apparently they changed a chip which basically nullifies this. Tried 3 other suggestions with firmware flashes that supposedly worked with the new chips but none worked. Too bad
Wyze is horrible for playback. I would not recommend their products currently for anything other than live viewing.

Wyze had several hardware versions. These instructions/firmware are older and likely apply to the early revs of the v2. I forget what they changed...I think it was the image sensor.
Anyone know if this works ok with version 1?
How do I change the resolution? It defaults to 640x360 and won't save new settings. I'm trying to set it to 1600x900 as this is the maximum supported by the firmware.
From what I gathered so far the firmware resolution is already set to maximum 1600x900 and may crash or do strange things if set otherwise by the NVR system. What you see is now depends on the software you use or the NVR system but not the camera itself.

When i put the SD card in the camera and hold the button down and plug in power, I never get the blue light. It goes straight to the lady saying "ready to connect". Any thoughts?

I got this error when i formatted the SD with anything other than FAT. I was trying EX-FAT but that didn't work. I have a 32 GB SD Card and it worked using FAT

i've baught a xiaofang, installed firmwire_mod>v2 from github, camera get connected to router, i can see it in dhcp client list, opened the web interface using "dafang"&"ismart12"(clicked start on "Start H264 RTSP"), but i am not able to stream via rtsp, i am using vlc player......can anyone help?
If it's not streaming to VLC player, I would try rebooting it. From what I can tell, the resolution doesn't change from 640x360. So, if you changed it, that might be why it's not working.

@@hasnatjamil8821 I would try erasing the SD card and start over. The settings are stored on the SD card, so, simply reflashing it won't fix it unless you erase the SD card.
In fact, after you do the initial holding the the button when powering it on, you don't need to do it again. Simply erasing the SD card (I would even try reformatting it if it's giving you issues) and copying over what's in the v2 folder all over again. And just entering your WiFi SSID and password into the config file again.
@@hasnatjamil8821 if you have another sd card lying around, I would even try a different SD card just to see if that's causing any issues.

Changing the password in the comment line will have no effect. If you want to change the password, you'll need to generate a correct htpasswd hash. There is an online utility to help you do this at: www.htaccesstools.com/htpasswd-generator/
Copy and paste the result into the .htpasswd file and save it. Then re-flash the camera.
