Thanks Alan for the great videos! You help this old timer learn more! Gosh I wish you were still in Rocklin! Loved that store ! Wife wasn't too sad when you had to close though!
Alan you provide so much needed information. I wish that the information/videos was available on a dvd. In the future I would like to review it like I do the fun fishing videos
New sunscriber here. Love your videos so far. I'm a long time fisherman, but I do have one question for you. I know with trout, if they are brought in the boat and handled with dry hands, it basically a death sentence for the. The protective "slime" coating has been compromised which means they are very susceptible to disease. IS it not the same with releasing kokanee? I am asking seriously because I am a big proponent of catch and release. Just trying to learn more about this species. Also, thank you for the information on the "hot" boat. I'll definitely check mine out when we go out tomorrow.
Yes if you handle a kokanee it will probably die. When releasing them I don't even net them. Just lean over and use thin needle nose and pop the hook out. You can use a wet towel and they might make it?
thanks Allan once again I caulimits after watching your videos. also thanks for your help in store the other day in helping me pick out the right tackle it worked great
never even heard of the hot boat concept. Always learning something from you. I guess if I use a self made downrigger with braided nyloon lines, there shouldn't be any voltage?
Thanks for the amazing content Alan! Would you happen to have any tips on jigging for kokanee in these California lakes? I mainly paddle kayak so trolling all day can definitely get tiring!
Great suggestion! Yes I've spooned lots of koks in Donner and it would work anywhere but late in the season. When the koks get ready to spawn a lot of the hits are from anger n reaction strikes. So I spoon in July and Aug depending on the weather
Alan, is a hot boat only a worry when you’re using Downrigger or can it be a problem also when trolling for stripers 100 feet back on braided line? Or when anchoring and bait fishing? And if it’s only when using downriggers will switching to braid instead of the metal cable line eliminate the problem? Is it the metal cable that’s putting the negative charge into the water? Or is it the boat itself?Thank you for all your help with these videos!
Only happens when using downriggers and yes changing to braid will fix it. But with cannon electric downriggers the auto stop won't work with braid cable.
@@AlanFong thank you Alan. You’re absolutely the best! You’re a blessing to us fishermen who can’t devote as much of our lives to our passion as you. These videos but more importantly the direct access you give us to ask questions and the time you take out of your days to answer us is really a special thing. It is deeply appreciated. Thank you so much!
Any time I enjoy helping anglers catch more fish and not waste any time finding where their at. So I hope it helps as I try to keep it current at best!
I was there few weeks ago and it was good at the mouth of the river arm up into about 1/4 mile in and its always good from mouth to dam cove. Just graph and you can see the schools as I always look for them
Thanks for making all the great videos. I am going Kokanee fishing with the kids, hopefully I can get them on some hot fishing action. Im debating between bullards and stampede. Stampede is a lot further drive. What do you think?
You can catch either at Bullards or Stampede. I heard New Melones is real good now. I was at Stampede today and killed them. Had four limits in less than an hour. All 14-15" koks.
This is great information, but how do you locate the fish? do you just drive your boat all over the place until you see them in your electronics? Thanks
I'll look at my GPS mapping and stay close to the river channel and watch my graph. Kokanee are easy to see and then I'll usually put my DR weight right above them. You should be able see your weight as a line on your graph.
I use a fiberglass rod because you want the parabolic bend in the rod. The old fenwick cranking rods work great. I use a ABU Garcia 6500C and it holds ten colors of 12# leadcore line
Yes put the blk on any negative battery post as long as it's not a floating ground. Best ground it to the starting motor battery. Put blk on neg and pos red on DR cable. DR has be down in the water at trolling speeds
Forgive me please, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer. The voltage you are measuring from your down rigger cable and boat ground....where is it coming from? Is it from an improperly insulated down rigger setup, or something else? It would appear that unless one does NOT have a positive charge, your SOL? You make a comment about replacing the metal cable with braid.....that seems to me that there would be NO charge at all then? And your switching the multi meter probes back and forth....of course if there is a DC charge and you reverse the probes it will result in reverse charges? So which probe goes where? Also, I thought an electrical charge took the most direct path, which would be from the cable to the hull of the boat? Your explanation implies that some kind of charge "radiates" far out into the water and thereby has a deterrent effect on the fish? Guess I'm just as dumb as a box o' rocks as your explanation of a "hot boat" did nothing to clear up this issue for me.............
The technical reason from where the charge is coming from I can't tell you. If from the boat to DR cable which is wire. Cannon tells you that there electric DR have a circuit board that will produce a half volt off the cable no matter what. I understand a little about electricity and it has made me wonder. But from fishing and using a scotty black box on my friends boat you can adjust the voltage to positive or negative. And if put on negative you won't get bit. So I have fooled around with it for a long time and I use cannon DR s and have tested it many time putting the red positive lead on the cable and the black to ground and it's always .5 volts. Black is always ground. So my friend has new boat and has scotty DR. We were at Stampede and I killed em there week before with Roger. Roger was there next week also and i was with Tom in his new boat. Roger was limited in hour (3) guys and I was not far from him with only a couple fish. So I started to zig zag and ended catching our limit but took me six hours. So took the wire off and put on braid and went back and caught limits faster. So NO voltage off the cable is better than a negative field off the cable.
Thanks for your response! I went online to investigate this phenomenon and was surprised how little there is on the subject? Do you happen to know if this only occurs with DRs that are electric or does it also occur with the manual models?@@AlanFong
It could happen on manual or electric downriggers. I guess it can come from the cable to boat creating this charge. Most of the time it's on the electrics
Great video Mr. Fong, you've been around the bay area for many years frorm columns to youtube and I'm still listening, Thanks..!
Thanks for listening
Great video Alan. Thx for the info
Alan, love your videos, you pull out all the stops and don't hold back, thanks for all the valuable information 😀 👍.
Thanks 👍

Thank you Allan for the hot cable demo and the tips . Looked a great day
Yes it was. We caught limits 15 koks in less than an half hour.

Does the electric charge -/+ apply to braided downrigger line?
NO if you use Braid cable your fine
I had the same question. I don’t see your answer
Got thank you

Yes if your using braid your fine. But when you have a negative voltage coming off your steel cable you won't have much luck lol
Nice job Alan, Love your videos!

Alan does the cable applys to scotty down riggers to?
any DR with wire cable could get the negative charge off the cable
@@AlanFong thanks

Great video/ who came up with the corn/tuna/garlic concept
I've been using tuna fish oil for many years lol
Is a downrigger only hot when equipped with wire cable as opposed to braid.
Yes only steel could you have a hot boat
How about a link to a decent voltage meter?
Look for a digital meter there probably only about $25
Thanks for the advice Alan. Do you have a favorite spot at Bullard Bar?
I was there few weeks ago and it was good at the mouth of the river arm up into about 1/4 mile in and its always good from mouth to dam cove. Just graph and you can see the schools as I always look for them
Like the bullards link.. ha ha. Looks more truckee area..
First video was at Bullards second was at Stampede. Stampede is off the hook limits for three in less than half hour 14-15" koks
I like fly fishing the smallies there to, there are gazillion small smallmouth .
Does the hot or not apply to kayaks as well if you have a trolling motor and downrigger?
If you have manual DR your probably alright

Thanks for the tips, we had a great day fishing, lots of fish. Tested my down riggers, they are good👍
How does replacing the cable with braided downrigger line affect this? Especially on something like a kayak. Thanks for all the videos!
If your in a kayak you should use braid cable as it cuts thru the water better than wire. You should be ok reguarding having a hot boat.
Great fishing video trip.. Thanks my friend.. Good luck. 👍🙏
Thank you too. and going back tomorrow
Nice video Alan. How heave is your downrigger weight?
I use 10# weights need to be straight down. You can see DR ball on fishfinder and it should be the same as on the DR meter
What happen to the tackle tip them song? Lol good video
??? have to ask my producer
This is great information, but how do you locate the fish? do you just drive your boat all over the place until you see them in your electronics? Thanks

Allan, Not really sure when you said if you have a cannon it’s no problem I’m a little confused why. Thanks. Please explain. Rick
Cannon electric DR have a built in circuit board that adjusts the voltage to half volt.
Awesome thanks. I have cannon down riggers.
Is a 12lb ball too heavy for Kokanee fishing at stampede?
no the heavier the better so it be straight down especially now the koks are 70-80 ft down
what rod and reel do you use for the lead core set up ?
I use a fiberglass rod because you want the parabolic bend in the rod. The old fenwick cranking rods work great. I use a ABU Garcia 6500C and it holds ten colors of 12# leadcore line
How do you change the hot boat charge?
Scotty sells a black box so you can adjust the voltage coming off the DR cable.
Alan, on my fiberglass boat can I connect my negative on the meter to the negative on the battery and the positive on the down rigger cable?
Yes put the blk on any negative battery post as long as it's not a floating ground. Best ground it to the starting motor battery. Put blk on neg and pos red on DR cable. DR has be down in the water at trolling speeds
@@AlanFong Thank you Alan ! You have the best channel on RUclips ! I have learned so much from your channel.
thanks and spread the word
Hey Alan, I've looked for shoepeg but having trouble finding it.
Can you recommend a store? Sacramento area would work.
Nugget Market, safeway has it or you can order it on Amazon
What lake were you fishing Alan?
Stampede it is off the hook! Been there three time in last two weeks and takes less than half hour to catch three limits 14-15" koks
Does that hot boat have problems with just down rigs or with lead-core also?
Just DR, leadcore has no issues and when koks are in 30 ft or less the LC rods will catch more!
Hey Alan what if I'm the Hot one in the boat? Do I go swimming? Laughing... Nice fishin!
the gals told me your always HOT%$#@

Dang…the volt meter you showed cost about $350…any cheaper ways to test whether my boat is hot or not?
You can find the volt meter very cheap just make sure its digital
Update you're Mussel sticker.
Already did long ago on my boats
If you switch to braid on your downriggers I'm guessing you don't have to worrry about having a hot boat?
If you switch to braid no hot boat. If you have a cannon electric your auto stop might not work.
Too easy for you DUDE
I think things out lol
