The music video gives me a feeling of how young broken men act out in destructive ways when all they are really looking for is connection - often times in our society, the connection between romantic partners (say, a man and a woman) is seen as the ultimate bond - so a lot of energy is put into those connections, perhaps at the expense of reaching similar depths with your platonic relationships - your friends. When that relationship is done, there was so much energy and emotional input 'lost' that they spiral into self-destruction. All the men in the video are 'bonding' over destructive activities - either defacing their bodies with tattoos (not saying it's a bad thing, but it's essentially defacing your body in the same way that tagging is defacing a building), getting rid of all their hair, destroying everything (vehicles, houses), either play fighting or really fighting each other, burning things, but there's moments where their relationships are highlighted even if just for a moment - the texting, the shots of various women in conversation with some of the masked men, seemingly an argument between a broken couple. As the video progresses, the intensity of the externalized violence ramps up, but it only serves to counterbalance the intensity of the alienation of the various guys - you see shots of them alone, lying face down on a mattress (presumably crying) in a messed up house, or huddled up close to the skidding cars, or burying their faces on their hands while a car burns in the background. They're all alone, the friendships and the path they've gone down on, wanton destruction of property and even their closest relationships, they've sacrificed even their relationships for the cheap thrills of their adrenaline-fuelled lifestyles, the quick dopamine hits of new excitement. Perhaps regretting their decisions, or the circumstances that brought them here. The video's violence and quickly-edited nature contrasts with the almost serenade-like melancholy of the actual music - ultimately what they're looking for is that love story. Also, in psychoanalysis, the shaving of the head can be seen as a hint that the person completely gave up on its identity, regardless of the motive (which often happens when some people join a gang. They kill their old self and start living for something different, that's why the video feels unsettling).
how i feel like rn. my gfs been depressed and says I've been pusihng her away, so she doesn't text me much now. Sometimes I just argue with her now, and other times i just wanna kms or hang out with friends to be happy. it sucks. I feel like I'm going through what this video shows so its really emotional rn.
Not men, young teens sure. No man is actually a man if they act like this just cause they are "broken." Anyone 18 and under might, but it's rare you see grown men acting this way, unless they just come from rough areas and grew up around it.

To me, this song is about trying to fill the void left by a past and unique strong relationship. He finds other women, and tries to find a glimpse of his previous relationship in them, but he's consistently disappointed. The video is about the self-destructive spiral a lot of young people go down in the pursuit to fill that void. And at the end, after all the chaos and destruction, he's still in the same place he was at the beginning, both literally in the video and figuratively.
I am truly in love with your reaction, seems like you're the first person to get what the music wants to tell within the video... They're mad related, and it's not only just misputed, the video completes the music.
Not sure how old you are, but as someone who grew up in the early days of the Internet, and has been watching on YT from the very beginning, experienced 1st hand the glory days of Filthy Frank, and the wild west days of the Internet in general in the early and mid 2000's --- The juxtaposition of this super emotional song with the insane antics and self destructive behavior in the video really hits home in a super relatable way that I can't quite put my finger on. It's like 2 different sorts of nostalgia combined into this one melancholic experience.
She'd take the world off my shoulders If it was ever hard to move She'd turn the rain to a rainbow When I was living in the blue Why then, if she is so perfect Do I still wish that it was you? Perfect don't mean that it's working So what can I do? (Ooh) When you're out of sight In my mind 'Cause sometimes I look in her eyes And that's where I find a glimpse of us And I try to fall for her touch But I'm thinking of the way it was Said I'm fine and said I moved on I'm only here passing time in her arms Hoping I'll find A glimpse of us Tell me he savors your glory Does he laugh the way I did? Is this a part of your story? One that I had never lived Maybe one day you'll feel lonely And in his eyes, you'll get a glimpse Maybe you'll start slipping slowly And find me again When you're out of sight In my mind 'Cause sometimes I look in her eyes And that's where I find a glimpse of us And I try to fall for her touch But I'm thinking of the way it was Said I'm fine and said I moved on I'm only here passing time in her arms Hoping I'll find A glimpse of us Ooh, ooh-ooh Ooh, ooh-ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh 'Cause sometimes I look in her eyes And that's where I find a glimpse of us And I try to fall for her touch But I'm thinking of the way it was Said I'm fine and said I moved on I'm only here passing time in her arms Hoping I'll find A glimpse of us
Even when men are at their most vulnerable people still see us as chaotic and dangerous who need to man up/grow up And get help but refuse to actually extend a hand or even try to understand why when all they do is judge from an outside perspective And distance themselves from us Count the many comments there are about how much they dislike the video for the song when thats how most men suffer
Dan Streit (the director) was asked by Joji to make a video that shows chaos and was far removed from the song, and Dan Streit said he ended up making a video "highlighting the absurdity and misery of overly-masculine posturing"
I think I know why the video look weird, I think that person is trying to show us what is currently happen in his mind, and for me, he had depression, same as what I faced once before🥲
my theory: they arent broken up. he is talkin about both of their past selves to his and her present and future selves. and then talks to his and her past selves when they were happier from his unhappy present and future self they are still together. but they both want to be the way they were when first in love. the things they do in the video is cuz they arent happy anymore. she is in the vid yelling at him the whole time. hes romanticizing the past in the song while the video shows a glimpse of the reality. he obvi wouldnt miss whats happening in the video, hes clearly miserable. they both are. they are both destroying each other. listen to the way she talks to him. in return he acts out and continues the abusive cycle. he wishes for a time with her he can no longer see (out of sight) cuz its too far in the past and is now lost (out of his mind). their life together is flashing before our eyes while he is missing something he cant seem to find scanning thru the memories for the girl he loves, the one hes singin to but she no longer exists and neither does the guy he was that loved her. hes searching for someting he cant find cuz it no longer exists, and the video shows it possibly never existed...
The music video is supposed to represent the destructive nature of these guys and the bad lives they live and the break ups they went through. It gets more violent later on in the video, then when they’re all sitting they’re realizing all of the violence they’ve caused
From the perspective of one of "those guys". World tells us young men that we are not enough, we get ridiculed for our emotions, nobody cares about us. We form groups, we are all angry at the world we get into drug dealing, and all sorts of reckless activities. We start living a life without rules, without purpose only to realize only bitterness, loneliness, and sadness awaits at the end of this road. I moved on and changed my life, got back on track. However i know some guys that are still stuck there. It isnt always about a brake up, some of my old mates didnt even had a relationship.
I love you had no idea who Joji was. You must go back to Filthy Frank and Pink Guy to truly know George Miller aka Joji. Just check out Nectar in its intirety. Twice...good job to you.

Yeesss, finally. This is the first accurate reaction I've seen to this song, so far. The madness in this video is there for a reason.

I've always seen joji's breakup songs being more about his relationship with Frank than anything else
Perfectly put!
Man mental health 🖤
you are the first person on yt to get what the music video is about, props
She'd take the world off my shoulders
If it was ever hard to move
She'd turn the rain to a rainbow
When I was living in the blue
Why then, if she is so perfect
Do I still wish that it was you?
Perfect don't mean that it's working
So what can I do? (Ooh)
When you're out of sight
In my mind
'Cause sometimes I look in her eyes
And that's where I find a glimpse of us
And I try to fall for her touch
But I'm thinking of the way it was
Said I'm fine and said I moved on
I'm only here passing time in her arms
Hoping I'll find
A glimpse of us
Tell me he savors your glory
Does he laugh the way I did?
Is this a part of your story?
One that I had never lived
Maybe one day you'll feel lonely
And in his eyes, you'll get a glimpse
Maybe you'll start slipping slowly
And find me again
When you're out of sight
In my mind
'Cause sometimes I look in her eyes
And that's where I find a glimpse of us
And I try to fall for her touch
But I'm thinking of the way it was
Said I'm fine and said I moved on
I'm only here passing time in her arms
Hoping I'll find
A glimpse of us
Ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
'Cause sometimes I look in her eyes
And that's where I find a glimpse of us
And I try to fall for her touch
But I'm thinking of the way it was
Said I'm fine and said I moved on
I'm only here passing time in her arms
